  • Nikolas Cruz was spared the death penalty because of one person who refused to vote for execution, family members of Parkland shooting victims revealed after the verdict. The family members said they were told the jury's vote was 11-1 in favor of the death penalty for Cruz.
The jury foreperson later told WFOR that the vote was actually 9-3 for death, but only 1 was a hard "no" on execution.

I've lost a child to suicide in 2007 at the age of 23, and I can tell you there is nothing worse a parent or family member can endure than losing a child. I'm not comparing my son's death to the horrific way these families lost their children, but the pain is something you live with the rest of your life. Read the actual articles. As the New York Times reports, three jurors voted for life in prison, not one. Justice was served today. You may not agree with it, but that is the purpose of a jury. We have no idea what is in store for this convicted killer, but the Jury has spoken. I don't personally know if every family was hoping for the death penalty, but three jurors felt they could not condemn a mentally ill person to death. (So says the article.) I can't speak for family members, and I'm not in their shoes, but I also don't know if this changes things for them in the long run. They will hurt until their last breath, and they will mourn and miss that family member for just as long, there's no escaping that pain whether Cruz is dead or locked in a prison. I pray for their strength, their comfort, and their ability to feel joy again someday.

Your son will Rest In Peace better when you finally heal with time and understanding. He wouldn’t want you to feel blame. Think of all the healing you have given other people, other patients. Yes, things won’t be the same without him but one day the weight of it all won’t feel so heavy. Time heals! Despite your religious beliefs, and regardless of wether or not you believe in an “after life”, he is with you and still loves you. There is nothing you could have done. ❤

Funny how you mention prayer and God but at the same time feel it's heart wrenching that they didn't get to have someone's life taken.
Anyone religious would know no one has the right to take someone's life
And besides. The death sentence is not the same as it once was. If the idea is for Nikolas Cruz to suffer... the death sentence is done in a very humane and peaceful way nowadays. He won't feel any pain and leave this planet peacefully. And with a belly full of any food of his choice. Since the death sentence grants you any last meal of your choice... literally anything.
Most people... good people will die painfully from heart attacks or weeks in a hospital from cancer or whatever while Nikolas Cruz gets a belly full of any food and a peaceful death sentence with no pain. How is that justice?
Instead of having him suffer for decades to see only walls, no technology and the same crap food every day. And he was born in modern technology which makes it worse to no longer have it anymore.

The experiment lasted about five minutes. The results? Those assigned to argue against it, couldn't even role-play it out for the sake of argument. There was no debate. The entire class was for the death penalty under certain circumstances.

"Heroic decision". This guy slaughtered innocent people and one very weak feeble minded useless human being decided that justice should not be served. One person decided that being a serial killer isnt that bad. There was no heroism, there was no wisdom, there was only cowardice from the juror and the man quoted. Plus this quote was a wordy way to say that "going with the flow" isnt always the way, and how taking your own path takes bravery. There is zero bravery in any jurors decision, as their decisions, words, thoughts are private and protected by the full force of the law. It doesnt take bravery to make a decision and live with it, as a juror. But to allow a serial killer to live shows nothing but fear and cowardice. Fear to do what is necessary, fear to do what is morally right, fear to do what the peaceful members of the community want done. This person is a coward and anyone who supports their decision is a fool, and most likely a coward.
