  • Hi Guys!
    Another comparison!
This time, I compare the G430 hybrid vs the fairway wood.
I get asked a lot, "should I use a hybrid or fairway wood?" and I always say, 'well, it depends' so today we are going to find out!
    Enjoy!

Thank you for an interesting video.
You also received many worthwhile comments. As I am 80 years old I carry,
    5, 7 , & 9 fairway woods &
    5, 6 & 8 hybrids to give me better height & distance.
I use all of the clubs & my irons start at 9 to lob wedge.

Great comparison 👍 it would be interesting to see you compare the hybrid to the 4 iron as I have found a 4 hybrid to be more in line with a 3 iron for distance but as you say far more forgiving and easier to get away

I definitely prefer woods, I bought a ping 5fw to replace my 3w and a 7fw. My 5fw is on average carrying about 250yds, very similar to my previous 3w but it’s much easier to hit. I love the 7fw because of those near vertical landings. I play a couple courses with very rounded greens, if I land at a low angle it’s going to fly off the back 80% of the time, the 7w has just been deadly for holding greens.

They work for me but definitly not for everyone. Love the game and enjoy everytime i can get out to play.

I’ve tried several Ping hybrids in my bag at different times and don’t like them at all. However I love my Ping fairway woods. Got a new G430 7 wood yesterday to replace my G400 which I can hit consistently so any improvement will be great. Occasionally use my G400 9 wood which I also hit well but it’s a bit close in loft to the 7. Longest iron I carry is a 5 these days. Used to use 1,2,3 and 4 irons but the fairway woods are much easier to hit (I’m nearly 70 and don’t get the club head speed I used to get in my 20s, surprisingly).

Generally, 4 hybrid will suit fast swing speeds and 7 wood will be better for slower swing speeds. As a rule, one should be looking to stop a ball not more than twenty yards maximum from carry.

I find as a mid handicapper that my 4 and 5 g430 hybrids are prone to go left, as they have toed in faces. I think the 7 wood is now an option I would go for, to replace the 4 hybrid, as the flight is straighter and a few yards less distance is an acceptable trade off in my opinion for consistently straighter shots.

  • @gtsgolf9410

As a slow swing speed player i would probably end up with the FW as i need the help with launch. Having said that I have hit the G430 5 hybrid just once and it went 8 yards further than the hybrid I had just bought (sigh). The G430 range with the alta quick shafts are great for slow speed golfers.

So in your initial review we chatted about this (7 wood vs 4. Hybrid) with my TSR2 7 wood vs TSI3 hybrid, the 7 wood won. But with Ping G430 I got the 4 (22°) hybrid because as you found, the hybrid is now a straight hitter and with the new carbon crown it flies higher, lands softer. So now I'll look at the G430 5 wood for the next gap

The sound of the G430 fairway is awful - they didn't address it at all and the carbon doesn't mute it. But the hybrids sound excellent. We tested the fairway (3w 15) outdoors on a. grass range and it's an embarrassing "clank" sound compared to offerings from TM, Titleist, Cobra, and Callaway which have a short hot snappy sound.

I’m wanting to replace my 5 wood with an 18* hybrid and you’ve helped confirm why ! 5 w is a nice club, got it fitted 3 years ago with a good shaft that suits me just fine. However the flight on the course is too high and spinny. The course I play is short so the 5 wood is not a green finder but more a fairway finder on short and tight p4. I’m hoping the strong hybrid will get me a bit further up the fairway especially into a breeze.
