  • Hannah and Fredrik visit GOLFTEC to figure out if they could benefit from using a 7 wood. The results show that both can absolutely benefit from putting a 7 wood in play. Especially Hannah and players with lower swing speeds (Under 105mph). If you haven't tried a 7 wood then make sure to test one out!
Fredrik's 7 wood specs: Ping G430 7 wood (21 deg). PING Tour 2.0 75X shaft. Golfpride align grip.
Hannah's 7 wood specs: Callaway Paradym 7 wood (21deg). VENTUS 6-S velocore. Golfpride Tour Velvet grip.

I’m 70 years of age and have always enjoyed hitting my longer irons. Last year I put an old T’Made 3 “rescue” in the bag and it became my go to club for length. Last month I put a PXG 7 wood in the bag. It’s got two degrees more loft but a longer shaft than the rescue club. I now get the same carry (circa 180) but it stops very quickly. It is incredibly easy to hit and so far it’s going straight every time! I think I’ll be putting a 5 wood back in the bag as well.

Same! I’m a +2 handicap and 3 wood doesn’t add much to the bag. 260 3 wood vs very accurate 240 5 wood.
How many par 5s will you hit a 260 yard 3 wood on green. Rather step on 5 wood and hit it 250 and be in front of green without a big miss from 3 wood
7 wood has taken 220 yard shot and made it much easier vs stepping on 4 iron

Being able to hold a green is so important and it’s such an advantage for amateurs to be able to do it from 170-230 yards. When my 5 and 7 wood + 5 Hybrid are on, my scores are so much better. Been meaning to try a 9 wood instead of my 5 Hybrid, so have more clubs that look the same and maybe there’s some consistency that can be gained there.

I swap out the driver for a 7 wood when playing the home course. I don't need a driver here and there is one hole where that 7 gives me a big advantage over the guys in our skins game. While they're all trying to slice one high over the corner on a short dogleg right hole, I can use that 7 and hit right over the trees lining the corner and go straight at the green.
But when I leave to play around the county on the weekends, I leave that 7 wood at home. It's less of an all around club in my view and more suited to specialty situations.

Fredrik's driving iron and 7 wood carried the same yardage. The driving iron wasn't fit for Hanna so it had a longer shaft than Hannah would play. That is so most likely what caused the slightly longer carry. If the driving iron would have Hannah's length of shaft then the carry for Hannah would be very identical.

might be because of the loft creep/loft jacking.

A driving iron is a type of head design that is kind of a combination of a regular iron and a hybrid. Think of it as a bigger long iron head. The loft on it can range from 4 iron to 1 iron in loft. Has less to do with the actual loft and more to do with the design of the club head.

I don't have a 7 wood but between my 4i (23°) and my 4 wood (17°), I have a 21° hybrid... Now, as nice as the talk and numbers seem, I just don't use it much, hardly ever, actually. The thing is, a pin 210m away is just a pin I don't attack. Unless it's wide open, no penalty area, no bunker, nothing around that green. Even then, honestly, I'm better off playing a 5 or 6 iron to "short of the green complex", before the bunkers, the undulations and so on, and then try to get up and down. If I did use my hybrid more often, I'd possibly make more birdies and eagles, but I'd get many more doubles as well.

I, personally, prefer woods over hybrids, but my current setup is 3w, 5w, and 4h. I took the 7w out to put the 4h back in. I am more confident with woods generally speaking, but my hybrid is great out of bad lies (rough, hard pan, pine straw, etc.) and I can shape it left and right a bit easier (although I do have to be careful not to hook with it) and can use it for punch shots and actually use it a lot for chipping around the green when it’s a bit too long to putt. I figured I still have 3 and 5w so I needed a versatile club that I could use in many situations.

I get the comparison for long par 3s, but if you're using a driving iron for second shots to attack greens, you're doing it wrong. If you're more comfortable with a wood off the tee, that also makes sense. But, most people who have a driving iron in the bag are using it off the tee, particularly on windy days, or on links courses, or when the fairway is hard and dry and the ball is likely to run out a long way; not for its versatility. Only a fool would argue that a 2 or 3 iron is a more versatile club than a 7 wood. It would make more sense to compare a 7 wood with a 3 or 4 hybrid.

Been using one since '94. Funny how it was ridiculed for decades as being an old man club.

I don't see the point of having anything other than a 3 wood. Why? Because hybrids exist.

Isn’t the entire purpose of driving irons to drive the ball? Low trajectory, low spin off the tee. It’s not for holding greens… I feel like your assessing it for the wrong things… the clubs serve different purposes

I don’t understand why golfers continue to follow tour pros when it comes time to select their clubs. This is more marketing by the manufacturers. I really don’t care what Rory or Dustin or any of them carry because I am not a tour pro nor a golfer that spends most of his time awake hitting balls. Maybe if I was, I would be paid by the manufacturers to promote their clubs and balls. Get a fitting from a qualified fitter and then pick the clubs that are right for YOU.

100% agree with this! A good fitting is crucial for performance. A good fitter wouldn’t fit a player into a driving iron if they don’t have the speed to handle one.

It’s called a driving iron for a reason - driving.
