My family got a cat when this first came out. I was a kid that was obsessed with this movie. So we named him Casper. Didn't work for him much as he wasn't the friendliest of cats. But still we loved him.
This is my favorite movie from when I was a kid but as an adult I'm totally with you. Casper got a raw deal, sacrificed his life for Kat's dad and her mom gives him a one song dance as a human, he should have got at least 24 hours
As much as we all wanted Casper to become human (and stay that way), he understood that doing so would leave Cat an orphan who would have to go into the foster system. She already lost her mother. Losing her father too and being left alone would have been devastating. She is still a child after all.
Casper was noble and sacrificed his opportunity to be human again so that Cat could have her dad back.
Plus Casper got a new dream come true, Kat stayed in his life
They'd both go into the foster system and probably would quickly be seperated from each other never to be seen again.
"What does it feel like to die?-It's like being born I think, but backwards." "Can I keep you?", those lines stayed with me for years when I was a child. Underrated movie at the time. They don't make movies like that anymore, so heartwarming, and it has a beautiful score from James Horner, R.I.P.
Human Casper was played by Devon Sawa who was around 17 and Christina Ricci was around 15. The two of them worked together again in "Now and Then." Devon Sawa was quite the heartthrob in the late 1990s.
I have to admire how this movie completely leans into the unavoidable fact that the title character is a dead child.
Yeah, you have to think about Kat’s well-being and mental health too! She lost her mother and well lost her father. She would have been an orphan and because Kat is someone who Casper truly cares for and wants her to have a happy life. He was admirable enough to sacrifice his dream for a family to be together. In which unfortunately for him, he decided to not cross over because he wanted to stay with his father. Then after his father died, he continued to stay to keep a sane and balanced environment in Whipstaff Manor. I can’t imagine what the manor would be if Casper wasn’t there and it was just 3 crazy ghosts.

If I had a nickel for every time a young Christina Ricci played a girl who had a rich blonde nemesis and lived in a creepy mansion with a convulated mechanism to get to the secret hidden room located underneath I'd have two nickels, which isn't a lot, but it's weird it happened twice.
"I might keep him..." Trixy, I can lie to my friends, you can lie to your friends, but lets not lie to each other. That kitten has already melted your heart and is just waiting for a name. He looks like a Jameson. Very regal
I went to the theater when this first came out because when I was a wee little person I grew up on the Casper cartoon during Saturday morning cartoons.
RIP, James Horner. He did the music for this movie.

I can still remember how big this movie was hyped in 1995, it was the first time a main lead role was fully CGI.

I think you’re supposed to wait a specific time before getting kittens fixed. My folks had to wait something like 6 months before they got their kitten fixed. Of course it was a girl.

When I was a kid, my first Halloween costume was Casper. I was so excited to go trick-or-treating for the first time in my Casper costume, then our town banned trick-or-treating, and I didn't get to go.

and having watched the cartoons as a kid getting some back story for Casper, him actually finding some forever friends...and seeing him as a real boy...best movie ever. for real. and it was funny and cute too. even the Carrigan with Eric Idle parts were iconic

That's a cute little kitten. Then again all kittens are cute 😊 lol. When it comes to Casper, he has been around a long time. There have been comic strips of him everywhere, there have been cartoons of him, they've made a lot of different toys of him, I could go on and on. Him and his three uncles (Fatso, Stinky, and Stretch) have kinda faded from the spotlight a lot like other characters from his time, like Popeye, Felix the Cat, Yogi the Bear, and so many others.

Name the cat "Oreo" because of his colors and he's sweet as the cookie. "Casper" is a great Halloween classic. I saw it in the theatre when it first came out. I loved the awesome cameos!

About 25 years ago, I had a neighbor who had a miniature goat that he hadn't yet given a name to, and he said I could name it if I wanted to. It was a very lovable little thing, and it was white, so I named it Casper the friendly goat. 🐐 🤣

I always liked to believe that his unfinished business was reviving Kat's dad. Now he can finally reunite with his family.
Casper was a comic and an cartoon series where the recurring gag was that every time anyone met him (at least for the first time) they got scared and ran. That's why they put that in the movie, regardless he is friendly and cute.
This movie is more influential than most people realize. After this movie, lots of people, movies and series started talking about ghosts as dead people with unfinished business. Even though that idea continues to be cited today, you can ask most people where they got the idea from and they don't know, they just thing it is something stated as a fact. This movie is where it really comes from.

He was a frequent guest on the early days of Saturday Night Live, usually on Weekend Update. Not a real priest. Comedian Rodney Dangerfield (Caddyshack) is the face he sees in the mirror when the ghosts are inside him. The Crypt Keeper also appears. He is from the TV series "Tales from the Crypt" and a few movies beginning with the same name.
I'm with you on the house being incredible. I'd want to live there too. But i'm weird. My ideal home would be the underground bunker in the second season of Lost.

Taking the 152-year-olds dream away wasn't devil like, you let his dream come true and over time as he learns how hard it is to be a human and losing her because her sublining resentment over losing her father for him breaks him down into a life of pure misery that he could look back on as all self-inflicted. 😈 That's where the real fun is.

Okay @ 23:30 - THAT is a part that gave me a serious WTF moment; I mean dude just volunteered Cat's house for a party and asks the teacher for permission???? Cat is standing right there. Ask HER, not the teacher. And worst of all it's not like he is some long-time friend of Cat's who knows her family and can "get away" with volunteering her home for a party. He technically hasn't even MET her. She just introduced herself like 5 seconds ago and that was to the room in general; not him personally. How are these kids so entitled that they'll volunteer a stranger's house to hold a party and not even ask the OWNER for permission??

so hear me out (who knows, i might b making zero sense at all or just mumbling but). but i think i figured it out. ok, so carrigan inherited the manor from her dad (her dad used to live their before it was condemned). so did casper & his dad, remember now, casper said he was young & played out in the snow & got sick from the cold & died (which alone was sad enough, the storyline period). forget the cuteness between the girl & him. & the fact that his dad was so saddened by the lose of his son that he literally built a machine to bring him back (god, even more depressing). anyways, so knowing that...my dumbass thought "omg, was casper & carrigan then related?" (casper/carrigan...share same dad? both blonde hair) oh wait, hold up...what if when carrigan was a lil girl that her dad & her met the 1st owners; casper jr & sr before buying the manor off them? whaaa??? that would be a great re-make for the 2nd movie, don't u think? 😶😮👻

And together, you're: Blue Chyna, Blue Diamond, Blue Jelly, or even Blue Comet.

Jokes apart, in my opinion this movie is so well made; the story is simple but not stupid and the visuals definitely holds up
Christina Ricci definitely has a dark side, you need to see Sleepy Hollow. Buffalo 66' is also an amazing weird movie.
