While Mr. Miyagi was fighting Nazis and earning the Medal of Honor his family was unlawfully imprisoned and the poor living conditions there cost the lives of both his wife and unborn child. Just makes him an even more amazing character that he stayed honorable and kind in the face of such cruelty and loss.

There was an episode of Happy Days where Arnold had installed pay toilets. Ritchie and the gang got locked inside after closing. So they decided to bust the pay toilet to get change for the pay phone. Arnold arrived just when Ralph came out and said "Okay! We broke the lock!" Arnold replied, "You break my LOCK? Why you not crawl UNDER?!"
People originally had doubts about him playing this role, because he was known as a comedic actor from Happy Days and MASH. But he quickly proved how well he could do a dramatic, and heartful role.
I think this is my favorite reaction to this film yet. I don't think I've ever seen someone get as excited as you over this movie. Warmed my heart. And Mr Miyagi definitely has to be one of the most beloved characters in movie history. Pat Morita did a great job with that role. This movie never fails to give me the feels, even 4 decades later. Such a big part of my childhood.
I grew up with this movie. When Karate Kid 2 was filmed in Hawaii in the mid1980s, I remember seeing the set they filmed on from a distance. I never got to meet Ralph Macchio or Pat Morita, though. I really regret that.
If you've never seen this trilogy then this is a fantastic time to get into the whole thing. Cobra Kai carries on the spirit and love in a great fashion. The movies and show are really silly if you try to apply real logic, but they're so damn good. It's especially touching because it's character building is so incredible and it's one of the few movies/shows that focuses on how good male role models are important.
Yeah!! Immediately had johnnys voice in my head "i never had a real male role model growing up. Until kreese came along, and we all know how that went"
We see at the end of this movie Johnny wasn't a complete jerk; that was Kreese's influence. Cobra Kai takes place 20 years later. Daniel is married, and Johnny is... in a bad place. We get to see things from his side for a while. The writing is really good, and they got the original actors for Johnny & Daniel. Mr. Miyagi has, alas, passed away by the time of the tv series.
It wasn't about making Daniel do chores. He taught him karate moves through repetitive motion exercises----the work that got done was just a bonus for Miyagi.
It helped to humble him too, Daniel was a little spoiled and demanded Miyagi to teach him for petty reasons, so him working for free was basically his retrobution for being teached
For the record, the director of Karate Kid is the same guy who directed the first Rocky movie and the same guy who did the music for Rocky did the music for Karate Kid too.
Its interesting. Something that isn't talked about a lot, Kreese and Miyagi were both in wars. Kreese shows his war accomplishments off as if show boating, Miyagi hides his war stuff away..ashamed of what happened and knowing the true cost of war. Also gives you another meaning for when Daniel asks "even you're scared to fight?" And Miyagi responds "always scared"
The best line about Daniel making a case for his medals, when Miyagi sees them, then points to his heart: "This says your brave, those (medals) say 'you're lucky'"
Directed by John G. Avildsen who helmed ROCKY earns its cred as its own reward about honor & friendship - Ralph Macchio and the late, great Pat Morita give iconic performances (the latter a well deserved Oscar nod for Best Supporting Actor) and the lovely Elisabeth Shue (swoon - fell in love w/her; met her yrs ago when she did an Off Broadway show - she' a sweetie and even lovelier IRL ) I knew you'd dig this Trix.
There are tons of romance films, westerns and action films, but woefully few that ever focus on a mentor / mentee relationship. This is a great one. It's great that Pat Mority, that had previously done more comedy roles for TV (a show called "Happy Days") to do a role with more dramatic potential.

I just realized while watching this, Daniel got his first point in the tournament with the same knee strike Johnny used on him in their first encounter at the beach, when Johnny broke the radio and Daniel came at him. I hope you watch part 2. I can't decide which one I like better. People complain that a reactor is reacting over a scene during their reaction video. That's funny.
Reaction videos are hard because they are not truly getting the full effect of the movie. They are often too busy explaining, talking and self-conscious about reacting that they miss the subtleties and details of what is in the movie. I have seen excellent reactors that keep reactions organic and brief. No need to be overly verbose. It's better to be genuine.

Pat Morrita was special . Actualy he played in quite some series and movies , voice acted in several cartoons , played Arnold in happy days , A great actor and comedian .
Nice. You've done Ghostbusters, The Terminator and The Karate Kid thus completing my 1984 trifecta of perfect cinema! Haha I'll always love this movie. After the original Star Wars, this is probably my favorite movie ending of all time. Hope you do Part 2!

Yep, John Avildsen directed both 'Rocky' and 'The Karate Kid'. - 17:46 - The Miyagi Technique to learn muscle memory! - 22:16 - The car that Daniel chose still belongs to actor Ralph Macchio. It even shows up in the series 'Cobra Kai' a couple of times. Keep going with these films, Blue. They were a big part of my teen years and when they started the series 'Cobra Kai', I was over the moon! The second one is great, the third is okay, and the fourth was not great, but had moments. Then watch the series which starts 30 years later, and focuses more on Johnny in the beginning, but becomes an amazing ensemble show very quickly.
all through my growing up years me and my friends would always quote this movie in any competitions. we could be playing monopoly and something would happen and one of us would say things like "Mercy is for the weak" or "strike hard, strike fast, no mercy sir" so iconic

11:16 Actually, yes since he was former military lol. 31:48 Mr. Miyagi is definitely a great character. I ugly cried when old Pat Morita died. Parts 2 and 3 are equally good. Part 4 was ehhhhhh..... The reboot with Jackie Chan is a cinematic disgrace. They also started a show series on Netflix called Cobra Kai which has several season of dealing with the consequences of the first 3 movies with a lot of characters returning. I really suggest watching it in your free time.

The "mundane chores as training in disguise" thing is a classic martial arts movie trope. My favorite example is a movie in which several characters enter the Shaolin Temple to learn kung fu, and one of them gets put to work in the kitchen cooking multiple giant vats of noodles. Using a long pole to stir the massive amounts of noodles and to vault from vat to vat, he develops the physical skills to become a master of staff fighting. The other one I remember from that movie was the guy who had to stoke the fire for the kitchen by using his bare hands to rip big pieces of wood into smaller pieces that could be fed into the furnace, and that gave him the hand strength to become a master of the tiger claw technique. For the life of me, I can't remember the name of the movie!
Best advice I can give, for motivation, pause THE KARATE KID as the final confrontation movie score swells up, snap a shot and use it as a background image in where you workout for inspiration and motivation.
Pat Morita (Mr. Miyagi) was on the sitcom Happy Days about high school kids learning about life with a little comedy thrown. Another great character who's a girl magnet and can start a jukebox by just pounding it once: Fonz. He's an adult and teaches the teens about life by helping.
Classic movie! Never gets old rewatching these movies. Hope you plan on jumping down the rabbit hole of The karate kid all the way up to the COBRA Kai series.
Fun fact: The song that plays during the tourney "you're the best arouuuund. No ones ever gonna keep you down" was written for the movie Rocky. They later turned it down in favor of eye of the tiger. Karate kid then took it.
Sometimes, people confuse karate with kung fu, or think they are the same thing. They are 2 forms of martial arts, of course, but Karate is from Japan, and Kung Fu is from China. The Karate Kid 2010 remake with Jackie Chan completely threw that away and had him teaching the kid kung fu. Chan is Chinese, so it would make sense, but they could've named the remake The Kung Fu Kid.
You will definitely enjoy the rest of the series, especially Cobra Kai. Daniel and Johnny training a new generation. Mr. Miyagi is long dead, but not forgotten.

"Whoooo Daniel! That came pretty naturally!". Hey, it's Elizabeth Shue. When this movie came out, at least half of men in America were wishing they were in Ralph's spot.... She looked like she was enjoying the kiss too... Notice her arms? 🥰
Johnny: It was the summer of '82. "Rocky III" had just come out. My buddy Dutch was a huge Mr. T fan, so we went to the local theater to check it out. Sitting in front of us was this group of cute chicks, eating popcorn. Dutch started throwing Milk Duds at them. Miguel: What? Why would he do that? Johhny: Because it's an alpha move, man. Babes love when you treat them like crap. Anyway, eventually, the girls got so pissed off, one of them stood up and started yelling at us. That's when I saw her for the first time. Miguel: Saw who? Johnny: Ali. She dumped popcorn all over Dutch, got butter all over him. [Miguel giggles] I could tell right away, man, this chick was a firecracker. Miguel: So did you ask her out? Johnny: Yeah, I hit on her a few times till she gave me a chance. We went to Golf N' Stuff for our first date. Kissed on the Ferris wheel. We were madly in love. Dated for 2 years. For, uh, Valentine's Day, instead of rings, I gave her this pink jelly bracelet. She gave me this. [headband] Miguel: So then what happened? Johnny: Summer before my senior year, we got into a fight. I figured we'd work things out eventually. Then Daniel LaRusso came to town. Next thing I know, he's hitting on her. I see the two of them flirting with each other. Miguel: What'd you do? Johnny: Well, I walked over to have a civil conversation with Ali. But LaRusso kept butting in. I told him to get lost, mind your own business. Out of nowhere, the guy sucker punches me. Miguel: What an [beep] Johnny: I know, man. I did what any dude would do, I defended myself. You know, I figured that was that. LaRusso wouldn't leave it alone. At the Halloween dance, I was sitting there, minding my own business, he douses me with a water hose. I haven't seen the guy in months. Frickin' turns a water hose in my head! So I chase him down, try to put an end to things that night, right? Turns out the guy's got a karate master of his own. Guy comes out of nowhere, jumps us, assaults me and my friends. I think my buddy Tommy got brain damage 'cause of that fight. Miguel: Oh my God. Johnny: Eventually, we decided to work things out at the All-Valley Tournament. So we both made it to the finals. It was 2-2. Miguel: What--what happened? Who won? Johnny: LaRusso won, I lost. But what's worse is that I lost Ali. Miguel: Yeah. Johnny: Alright, the reason I'm telling you all this is 'cause you gotta watch out for the LaRussos.
Great reaction! Everyone needs a Mr Miyagi in their lives. Would love to see you react to American Graffiti, Executive Decision or Say Anything. These are great underappreciated films that most RUclipsrs haven't reacted to yet.
Fun fact though about these movies, the boy who played Bobby won the members of Cobra Kai was actually in fact a black belt. The boy who played Dutch is actually the son of the great actor Steve McQueen. And the kid who Johnny fought before he fought Daniel was actually the one that came up with the crane kick Daniel uses to win

Another fun Karate movie is Barry Gordy's Last Dragon. It's got a kickin' soundtrack because Gordy was a famous music director. It's got the perfect level of cheese, I mean it's just so fun to watch. It's got the meanest, the prettiest, the baddest mofo low down around this town - Sho'nuff! He's the best villain EVER! It'll make you laugh...
Mr. Miyagi is nisei; second generation Japanese immigrants. The first to be born in the new country. You may not know this but the US rounded up nearly all the nisei in California after Pearl Harbor and put them in internment camps, just because their parents were Japanese. The Army didn't use nisei in the South Pacific as they might be mistaken for enemy troops, but they were used extensively in the European theater, especially Italy. One of the funnier true stories relates to that. Some German prisoners were being herded back for processing when they saw American nisei troops march by. The Germans were flabbergasted, as they thought Imperial Japan was an ally. An American soldier laughed "What, you believe everything Goebbels tells you?" 😆 Anyway. It may not be clear in the movie, but Miyagi was a nisei infantryman in Italy, where he was awarded the Medal of Honor, the highest award for valor in the United States. Shortly after that he found out his wife & child died in childbirth. Remember this was the early 1940s, and medicine wasn't nearly that advanced yet. Antibiotics were still new.
The scene where Mr. Miyagi gets drunk mourning the loss of his wife and baby refers to a dark period in U.S. history when, during World War 2, Japanese Americans were put in internment camps for fear that they might side with the Japanese against the United States on American soil. (Actor George Takei, Mr. Sulu from Star Trek: TOS, often speaks of his own family's experience being treated as "enemies" and being forced into one of the camps.) During the War, Mr. Miyagi joined the U.S. military to fight for the United States, but while he was defending the country, his wife was held in one of the camps where she died in chilbirth. So sad that a country built on the backs of foreign immigrants distrusted (and often still distrusts) foreigners so much that they are stripped of their dignity and treated as enemies.
This is definitely a rabbit hole worth going down. First came The Karate Kid; an instant classic. Then came The Karate Kid Part II, which really fleshed out Mr. Miyagi as a character. By the time The Karate Kid Part III came out, the formula was getting stale. But it did introduce one hell of a psychotic villain who really saves the story. The Next Karate Kid is more of a side-story to the rest of the overall arc where Mr. Miyagi enters uncharted territory; helping a troubled teenage girl. Finally, there's 5 seasons (so far) of Cobra Kai; which brings this universe full circle, and makes the original movies even better.
Everytime I see the scene where Daniel reads the letter of Myagi losing his wife and baby and then turns to him and bows wit the music and then fades into him training on the boat always gets me and gives me chills. Such a great moment
Daniel: She's a beaut, huh? Miguel: Oh. Uh I don't usually see cars like this where I live. Daniel: That's what I thought too. When Mr. Miyagi gave me this car, I was the envy of all Reseda. Miguel: I didn't know you're from Reseda. Daniel: When I first moved out here, my mom and I didn't have 2 pennies to rub together. Things were different back then. I was jealous of all country club kids like Johnny. Miguel: Sensei was a rich kid? Daniel: Yeah, he lived up in the hills. You didn't know that? I'm sure he must've told you all about our time back in high school? Miguel: He did. Sensei Lawrence told me about how you beat him with an illegal kick. Daniel: Hey, hey, hey, the rules state anything above the waist is legal. Besides, you used that same kick in last year's tournament, right? What else did Johnny tell you? [skip] Daniel: He said I sucker-punched him? Did he not mention the fact that he knocked me down first? Miguel: You were moving in on his girl. Daniel: They hadn't talked in weeks. I had no idea Johnny even existed when I got to that beach. All that I knew was that he broke her radio. She was upset. Miguel: Huh. Daniel: I was being chivalrous. Miguel: But what about Halloween? The water hose? Daniel: What? The water...These guys were beating the crap out of me every other...The water hose was the least of it, believe me. And it was just sitting there. It was so teed up. Trust me, if you were in my shoes, you'd have done the exact same thing. Johnny clearly overreacted to that. Miguel: I think Sensei was just upset because Ali was his first love. Daniel: Well, she was mine too. There was just something about her. I thought she was the one. I guess Johnny felt the same way. And that's what started all this.
I never understood why Ali was mad at Daniel after the country club scene either, but I have heard that there was a deleted scene where Ali catches up with Daniel outside the club. She attempts to apologize and explain what happened. Daniel doesn't believe her and yells at her accusing her of using him and storms off before she can explain. That's why she was angry with him at the arcade.
There's a reason you kept getting reminded of Rocky. The first (and fifth) Rocky movie has the same director as The Karate Kid movies. 😀 John G. Avildsen is great at making inspirational feel-good movies! I recommend another movie of his, Lean On Me starring Morgan Freeman. This one is based on an actual real life person. Mr. Miyagi, Mickey from Rocky, and Yoda are all cut from the same cloth. The "You Karate yes. You Karate no" speech is basically "Do or do not. There is no try."
You have taken the first step into the universe that is Karate Kid/Cobra Kai. One movie down, three more and a TV series to go. FYI, the TV series Cobra Kai is still ongoing, and it is a masterpiece as well. I know you don't typically do TV show reactions, but if you end up liking Karate Kid 2, 3, & The Next Karate Kid, then you should check out the TV series Cobra Kai. It is mostly set in present day, but explores the backstory of Johnny Lawrence. William Zabke (Johnny) and Ralph Macchio (Daniel) both reprise their roles in the series as the leads.
Can you please continue the Karate Kid journey? There are two more films featuring Daniel and Mr. Miyagi. If you decide to, once you finish KK2 and KK3, there’s a show on Netflix called Cobra Kai, which is arguably the greatest show on television. There are only 5 seasons so far, 10 episodes per season, so it shouldn’t take long to get caught up. But you really need to react to it. It’s centered on characters from the Karate Kid films, only it’s set 30+ years later. It’s absolutely amazing.
Love this classic 80's movie I saw it in 84 when I was 9 Loved it so much. Fun fact: When rewatching as an adult I couldn't help but notice an issue with the scene at the beginning when Daniel and his mom push start her station wagon. You can push start a car that has a manual transmission. The problem is that wagan has a automatic transmission so it would never actually work. I think there's even a moment where you can see the automatic shift arm on the steering colum. I recommend Karate kid 2 You can stop there if you want. However if you plan to ever watch the the very good Netflix series Cobra Kai than also watch Karate kid 3
It's funny that you mentioned Rocky because the song they used for the tournament montage "You're the Best" was going to be the song in Rocky 3, until the song "Eye of the Tiger" was written for the movie instead.
20:14 "How does that happen" There are many reasons. I nearly lost my wife and unborn daughter through *Pre-eclampsia* Thankfully they both survived. Unfortunately some mothers don't.
There's also the inescapable fact that Mrs. Miyagi and their son would have been in an internment camp for the duration of the war and would not have had the best medical care available. The fact that Miyagi-san not only became a Sergeant, but earned the Medal Of Honor through his time in the military adds extra-dark irony to an already tragic story.
Over the years I've learned to appreciate the 3 original Karate kid movies. I know a lot of people didn't care for the 3rd movie. I hope you continue the trilogy.
I really enjoyed watching you enjoy this film. It was a very favorite of mine when I was in my teens. I was happy to see you have the same emotional response that I did. And to think that Mr Miyagi's actor had never practiced martial arts before filming this movie!
The karate kid isn’t about a kid. Its about an immigrant, who joined the army and fought his own people, while his wife and child died in an american internment and concentration camp. Pat Morita won an academy award for his outstanding performance. Ralph Macchio showed up.
Damn, you are a serious Daniel-san stan lol. Because Allie was definitely super patient with Daniel, especially since he never really gave her a chance to tell her side of the story, just made assumptions. Because Daniel is definitely a hothead, which becomes clearer as the series goes on. But hey, I'm glad you like him, especially if it gets you more invested in the story!

During WWII the US was at war with Japan and Germany. People of Japanese descent living in the US were forced out of their homes and into internment camps across the States. Most of the people were American citizens and they were treated inhumanely. These events were a shameful moment in US history. While Mr. Miyagi was serving in the US military, his wife died in childbirth at the internment camp . This is why he was grief-stricken when Daniel saw him crying and looking at his wife 's photo. Daniel is like the son he never had.
This has been my favorite franchise growing up. There is four cry kid movies, a TV series by the name of Cobra Kai which is awesome I highly recommend if you like this one you'll love Cobra Kai.
You have to watch Cobra Kai. It starts 35 years after this tournament, and the original actors reprised their roles as Daniel LaRusso and Johnny Lawrence. And lots of other familiar characters from the movies too.

Karate Kid 2 focuses on Mr Miyagi's back story a lot more. Since he's now your favorite character, you've got to watch it.

In that time medical was not that good and a lot of women died giving birth and the baby not because they were in a camp

People originally had doubts about him playing this role, because he was known as a comedic actor from Happy Days and MASH. But he quickly proved how well he could do a dramatic, and heartful role.
Hard to believe the same guy who played Mr. Miyagi played Arnold in "Happy Days". Two totally different characters, but same laugh: Bwahaaaa!!
I think this is my favorite reaction to this film yet. I don't think I've ever seen someone get as excited as you over this movie. Warmed my heart. And Mr Miyagi definitely has to be one of the most beloved characters in movie history. Pat Morita did a great job with that role. This movie never fails to give me the feels, even 4 decades later. Such a big part of my childhood.
I grew up with this movie. When Karate Kid 2 was filmed in Hawaii in the mid1980s, I remember seeing the set they filmed on from a distance. I never got to meet Ralph Macchio or Pat Morita, though. I really regret that.
If you've never seen this trilogy then this is a fantastic time to get into the whole thing. Cobra Kai carries on the spirit and love in a great fashion. The movies and show are really silly if you try to apply real logic, but they're so damn good.
It's especially touching because it's character building is so incredible and it's one of the few movies/shows that focuses on how good male role models are important.

We see at the end of this movie Johnny wasn't a complete jerk; that was Kreese's influence.
Cobra Kai takes place 20 years later. Daniel is married, and Johnny is... in a bad place. We get to see things from his side for a while. The writing is really good, and they got the original actors for Johnny & Daniel.

It wasn't about making Daniel do chores. He taught him karate moves through repetitive motion exercises----the work that got done was just a bonus for Miyagi.
It helped to humble him too, Daniel was a little spoiled and demanded Miyagi to teach him for petty reasons, so him working for free was basically his retrobution for being teached

Its interesting. Something that isn't talked about a lot, Kreese and Miyagi were both in wars. Kreese shows his war accomplishments off as if show boating, Miyagi hides his war stuff away..ashamed of what happened and knowing the true cost of war. Also gives you another meaning for when Daniel asks "even you're scared to fight?" And Miyagi responds "always scared"
The best line about Daniel making a case for his medals, when Miyagi sees them, then points to his heart: "This says your brave, those (medals) say 'you're lucky'"
Directed by John G. Avildsen who helmed ROCKY earns its cred as its own reward about honor & friendship - Ralph Macchio and the late, great Pat Morita give iconic performances (the latter a well deserved Oscar nod for Best Supporting Actor) and the lovely Elisabeth Shue (swoon - fell in love w/her; met her yrs ago when she did an Off Broadway show - she' a sweetie and even lovelier IRL ) I knew you'd dig this Trix.
There are tons of romance films, westerns and action films, but woefully few that ever focus on a mentor / mentee relationship. This is a great one. It's great that Pat Mority, that had previously done more comedy roles for TV (a show called "Happy Days") to do a role with more dramatic potential.

I just realized while watching this, Daniel got his first point in the tournament with the same knee strike Johnny used on him in their first encounter at the beach, when Johnny broke the radio and Daniel came at him.

People complain that a reactor is reacting over a scene during their reaction video. That's funny.
Reaction videos are hard because they are not truly getting the full effect of the movie. They are often too busy explaining, talking and self-conscious about reacting that they miss the subtleties and details of what is in the movie. I have seen excellent reactors that keep reactions organic and brief. No need to be overly verbose. It's better to be genuine.

Keep going with these films, Blue. They were a big part of my teen years and when they started the series 'Cobra Kai', I was over the moon! The second one is great, the third is okay, and the fourth was not great, but had moments. Then watch the series which starts 30 years later, and focuses more on Johnny in the beginning, but becomes an amazing ensemble show very quickly.

The reboot with Jackie Chan is a cinematic disgrace. They also started a show series on Netflix called Cobra Kai which has several season of dealing with the consequences of the first 3 movies with a lot of characters returning. I really suggest watching it in your free time.

The "mundane chores as training in disguise" thing is a classic martial arts movie trope. My favorite example is a movie in which several characters enter the Shaolin Temple to learn kung fu, and one of them gets put to work in the kitchen cooking multiple giant vats of noodles. Using a long pole to stir the massive amounts of noodles and to vault from vat to vat, he develops the physical skills to become a master of staff fighting. The other one I remember from that movie was the guy who had to stoke the fire for the kitchen by using his bare hands to rip big pieces of wood into smaller pieces that could be fed into the furnace, and that gave him the hand strength to become a master of the tiger claw technique. For the life of me, I can't remember the name of the movie!
Best advice I can give, for motivation, pause THE KARATE KID as the final confrontation movie score swells up, snap a shot and use it as a background image in where you workout for inspiration and motivation.

Pat Morita (Mr. Miyagi) was on the sitcom Happy Days about high school kids learning about life with a little comedy thrown. Another great character who's a girl magnet and can start a jukebox by just pounding it once: Fonz. He's an adult and teaches the teens about life by helping.

Fun fact: The song that plays during the tourney "you're the best arouuuund. No ones ever gonna keep you down" was written for the movie Rocky. They later turned it down in favor of eye of the tiger. Karate kid then took it.
Sometimes, people confuse karate with kung fu, or think they are the same thing. They are 2 forms of martial arts, of course, but Karate is from Japan, and Kung Fu is from China.
The Karate Kid 2010 remake with Jackie Chan completely threw that away and had him teaching the kid kung fu. Chan is Chinese, so it would make sense, but they could've named the remake The Kung Fu Kid.

Johhny: Because it's an alpha move, man. Babes love when you treat them like crap. Anyway, eventually, the girls got so pissed off, one of them stood up and started yelling at us. That's when I saw her for the first time.

Johnny: Ali. She dumped popcorn all over Dutch, got butter all over him. [Miguel giggles] I could tell right away, man, this chick was a firecracker.
Miguel: So did you ask her out?
Johnny: Yeah, I hit on her a few times till she gave me a chance. We went to Golf N' Stuff for our first date. Kissed on the Ferris wheel. We were madly in love. Dated for 2 years. For, uh, Valentine's Day, instead of rings, I gave her this pink jelly bracelet. She gave me this. [headband]
Miguel: So then what happened?
Johnny: Summer before my senior year, we got into a fight. I figured we'd work things out eventually. Then Daniel LaRusso came to town. Next thing I know, he's hitting on her. I see the two of them flirting with each other.
Miguel: What'd you do?
Johnny: Well, I walked over to have a civil conversation with Ali. But LaRusso kept butting in. I told him to get lost, mind your own business. Out of nowhere, the guy sucker punches me.
Miguel: What an [beep]
Johnny: I know, man. I did what any dude would do, I defended myself. You know, I figured that was that. LaRusso wouldn't leave it alone. At the Halloween dance, I was sitting there, minding my own business, he douses me with a water hose. I haven't seen the guy in months. Frickin' turns a water hose in my head! So I chase him down, try to put an end to things that night, right? Turns out the guy's got a karate master of his own. Guy comes out of nowhere, jumps us, assaults me and my friends. I think my buddy Tommy got brain damage 'cause of that fight.
Miguel: Oh my God.
Johnny: Eventually, we decided to work things out at the All-Valley Tournament. So we both made it to the finals. It was 2-2.
Miguel: What--what happened? Who won?
Johnny: LaRusso won, I lost. But what's worse is that I lost Ali.
Miguel: Yeah.
Johnny: Alright, the reason I'm telling you all this is 'cause you gotta watch out for the LaRussos.

The boy who played Dutch is actually the son of the great actor Steve McQueen. Another fun Karate movie is Barry Gordy's Last Dragon. It's got a kickin' soundtrack because Gordy was a famous music director. It's got the perfect level of cheese, I mean it's just so fun to watch. It's got the meanest, the prettiest, the baddest mofo low down around this town - Sho'nuff! He's the best villain EVER! It'll make you laugh...

Mr. Miyagi is nisei; second generation Japanese immigrants. The first to be born in the new country. You may not know this but the US rounded up nearly all the nisei in California after Pearl Harbor and put them in internment camps, just because their parents were Japanese.
The Army didn't use nisei in the South Pacific as they might be mistaken for enemy troops, but they were used extensively in the European theater, especially Italy. One of the funnier true stories relates to that. Some German prisoners were being herded back for processing when they saw American nisei troops march by. The Germans were flabbergasted, as they thought Imperial Japan was an ally. An American soldier laughed "What, you believe everything Goebbels tells you?" 😆
Anyway. It may not be clear in the movie, but Miyagi was a nisei infantryman in Italy, where he was awarded the Medal of Honor, the highest award for valor in the United States. Shortly after that he found out his wife & child died in childbirth. Remember this was the early 1940s, and medicine wasn't nearly that advanced yet. Antibiotics were still new.

The scene where Mr. Miyagi gets drunk mourning the loss of his wife and baby refers to a dark period in U.S. history when, during World War 2, Japanese Americans were put in internment camps for fear that they might side with the Japanese against the United States on American soil. (Actor George Takei, Mr. Sulu from Star Trek: TOS, often speaks of his own family's experience being treated as "enemies" and being forced into one of the camps.) During the War, Mr. Miyagi joined the U.S. military to fight for the United States, but while he was defending the country, his wife was held in one of the camps where she died in chilbirth. So sad that a country built on the backs of foreign immigrants distrusted (and often still distrusts) foreigners so much that they are stripped of their dignity and treated as enemies.

This is definitely a rabbit hole worth going down. First came The Karate Kid; an instant classic.
Then came The Karate Kid Part II, which really fleshed out Mr. Miyagi as a character.
By the time The Karate Kid Part III came out, the formula was getting stale. But it did introduce one hell of a psychotic villain who really saves the story.
The Next Karate Kid is more of a side-story to the rest of the overall arc where Mr. Miyagi enters uncharted territory; helping a troubled teenage girl.
Finally, there's 5 seasons (so far) of Cobra Kai; which brings this universe full circle, and makes the original movies even better.
Everytime I see the scene where Daniel reads the letter of Myagi losing his wife and baby and then turns to him and bows wit the music and then fades into him training on the boat always gets me and gives me chills. Such a great moment
It's cool to see Pat Morita play Miyagi because in real life he sounded like the typical American stoner. Real laid back.
In terms of my experience with bullying, except for the physicality, this is pretty similar.

Miguel: He did. Sensei Lawrence told me about how you beat him with an illegal kick.
Daniel: Hey, hey, hey, the rules state anything above the waist is legal. Besides, you used that same kick in last year's tournament, right? What else did Johnny tell you?

Daniel: He said I sucker-punched him? Did he not mention the fact that he knocked me down first?
Miguel: You were moving in on his girl.
Daniel: They hadn't talked in weeks. I had no idea Johnny even existed when I got to that beach. All that I knew was that he broke her radio. She was upset.
Miguel: Huh.
Daniel: I was being chivalrous.
Miguel: But what about Halloween? The water hose?
Daniel: What? The water...These guys were beating the crap out of me every other...The water hose was the least of it, believe me. And it was just sitting there. It was so teed up. Trust me, if you were in my shoes, you'd have done the exact same thing. Johnny clearly overreacted to that.
Miguel: I think Sensei was just upset because Ali was his first love.
Daniel: Well, she was mine too. There was just something about her. I thought she was the one. I guess Johnny felt the same way. And that's what started all this.
I never understood why Ali was mad at Daniel after the country club scene either, but I have heard that there was a deleted scene where Ali catches up with Daniel outside the club. She attempts to apologize and explain what happened. Daniel doesn't believe her and yells at her accusing her of using him and storms off before she can explain. That's why she was angry with him at the arcade.
Now you have to watch 2 and 3 along with the tv show Cobra Kai!!! 🤩

FYI, the TV series Cobra Kai is still ongoing, and it is a masterpiece as well. I know you don't typically do TV show reactions, but if you end up liking Karate Kid 2, 3, & The Next Karate Kid, then you should check out the TV series Cobra Kai. It is mostly set in present day, but explores the backstory of Johnny Lawrence. William Zabke (Johnny) and Ralph Macchio (Daniel) both reprise their roles in the series as the leads.
Can you please continue the Karate Kid journey? There are two more films featuring Daniel and Mr. Miyagi. If you decide to, once you finish KK2 and KK3, there’s a show on Netflix called Cobra Kai, which is arguably the greatest show on television. There are only 5 seasons so far, 10 episodes per season, so it shouldn’t take long to get caught up. But you really need to react to it. It’s centered on characters from the Karate Kid films, only it’s set 30+ years later. It’s absolutely amazing.

Fun fact: When rewatching as an adult I couldn't help but notice an issue with the scene at the beginning when Daniel and his mom push start her station wagon.
You can push start a car that has a manual transmission.
The problem is that wagan has a automatic transmission so it would never actually work.
I think there's even a moment where you can see the automatic shift arm on the steering colum.

20:14 "How does that happen" There are many reasons. I nearly lost my wife and unborn daughter through *Pre-eclampsia* Thankfully they both survived. Unfortunately some mothers don't.
There's also the inescapable fact that Mrs. Miyagi and their son would have been in an internment camp for the duration of the war and would not have had the best medical care available. The fact that Miyagi-san not only became a Sergeant, but earned the Medal Of Honor through his time in the military adds extra-dark irony to an already tragic story.
Over the years I've learned to appreciate the 3 original Karate kid movies. I know a lot of people didn't care for the 3rd movie. I hope you continue the trilogy.

During WWII the US was at war with Japan and Germany. People of Japanese descent living in the US were forced out of their homes and into internment camps across the States. Most of the people were American citizens and they were treated inhumanely. These events were a shameful moment in US history.
While Mr. Miyagi was serving in the US military, his wife died in childbirth at the internment camp . This is why he was grief-stricken when Daniel saw him crying and looking at his wife 's photo. Daniel is like the son he never had.
The actor who plays Daniel is now older in real life than the actor who plays Mr Miyagi was at the time of making this movie.

This has been my favorite franchise growing up. There is four cry kid movies, a TV series by the name of Cobra Kai which is awesome I highly recommend if you like this one you'll love Cobra Kai.
