  • In this 37th installment, Jimmy reviews and demonstrates the “funky” Mustang Hybrid from the folks at IYV Guitars. The IVY ISMF-200 VW is advertised as a “Strat”, but I think it is more Mustang “hybrid” and a cool offset guitar to add to your collection. A 22 fret, 24” scale with vibrato it has a basswood body, maple neck and solid body “funk” with dual offset single coil pickups. Check them out on Amazon!!

    I forgot to mention in this video (you should know this already, right?) but this review/demo of this guitar, is right out of the box (after 1 day acclimation) sitting in the studio. Nothing was done to this guitar at all except for tuning it!

      Sounds great to me. Theres another company who makes these. ThomannUSA makes these under their house name, Harley Benton. The model name for their version of this exact same guitar is the Harley Benton MS60. They make a lefty version of this same guitar as well and I have the exact same guitar as this, same color everything, but lefty and the headstock says Harley Benton. I love this guitar. Its definetly a Fender Mustang clone. And Ive had no issues with mine at all. Its great to see others playing this same guitar. :)

      Thanks for watching and commenting Rodney! Yes, Thomann does do similar models. Just so you are aware, IYV actually makes the Harley Benton models in the same plant in Vietnam for Thomann . They also make models for Wolf and others. Sometimes, depending on the model, you can get small differences but basically the same guitar. Only problem right now is the big up charge in shipping from Thomann. However, I always tell my European subscribers to check Thomann for some of these IYV models that won’t ship overseas from Amazon. Thanks again for stopping in! It’s a great “funky” guitar. Enjoy! 👍

      I had been “joansing” for a offset for awhile now, and with how nice the 300 NA was from IYV, I decided to give this little hybrid a go. Less than $300 for two very nice guitars is a freakin bargain in my book. The color is cool, the body feels great, it plays great, the pups are really quite tasty...can’t complain at all.

    Nice movie Jimmy! I've had my IYV Mustang for about a week. I ordered through Amazon and had it 5 days later. I want to go on record as a very pleased buyer! My fret ends did not need filing, the hi E string does not touch the trem arm spigot. The neck fits into pocket perfectly. String action is low without buzz. The finish is beauty. It's not uncommon on reasonably priced guitars (any price range really) that some buyer follow up is required. A setup for instance. But I am true when I say my IYV MUSTANG needed nothing but playing.

    Hi Jimmy!
    Just following up with my IYV Mustang! I finally received the new bridge today; where the old one caused slight string rattle.
    Im very happy to say that it plays great now with the replacement 15$ Wilkinson bridge, and I'm very pleased with the guitar!!
    The guitar stays in tune well, and I was able to do a deeper setup on the action and intonation.
    I still have very minor electronics issues when playing in certain positions, but the guitar is playable now!
    I love the sound character it has. Kinda bell-ish sometimes.
    I will be re-doing the electronics upgrade next, and I believe this should be a solid gigging guitar!

    Great review. I sold my Squier Mustang because I wasn’t playing it much and after seeing your video I bought the IYV 200 and I love it. It’s a better guitar in my opinion than the Squier and with the tremolo and the retro look it’s a guitar I will play more often than I did with the Mustang. My IYV has a very slight blemish in the paint in one small area but I may be too picky. My wife didn’t notice it so it’s all good. It’s a heavier guitar than I thought it would be, the pickups sound good and the neck is great. It’s a keeper! I’m a subscriber and enjoy your reviews. Look forward to seeing more of your vids.

      @JimmyStewart1  2 года назад +1

      Hi Troy…appreciate your watching the channel and your comments and channel support! This Mustang hybrid is a bargain, truly one of my favorite IYV models, but it is not what I would classify as “light weight”. In fact, it is surprisingly heavy for a short scale weighing in at just under 8 lbs (7 pounds, 10 ounces) on mine. Is your son a beginner player or a bit more experienced? Perhaps try looking at some of the semi-hollow models from IYV? I just picked up their PRS style semi-hollow IPF-300, which is great after setup, sounds wonderful and a bit more versatile in tone. It weights about 5 and a half pounds! They also have the P90 equipped 400 in red flame, and their Spalted Tele 300…both being under 7 pounds….I have reviews of all of them here on the channel! Just some suggestions…

      @@JimmyStewart1 he's recovering from a brain injury, but could play almost any stringed instrument he touches. I am surprised at the weight. I have a Michael Kelly P90 Tele that looks like a mix between the 2 IYV'S, double F holes, spalted natural, shaped top. He would like a tremelo though. I'm thinking he might like the Estaban LP set up like a strat, but I would need to lighten it a little too, right at 7 lbs.

    Hey Jimmy, is it the Boston thing or us both being in the IYV and FF groups on FB or what? I just had one of these ismf 200's delivered yesterday! My first IYV. You describe it the same way as I describe it! In the group, I called what they call their strat a Mustang hybrid too. Hybrid due to the pickup switches like on a Jazzmaster or a Jag. Unlike yours, mine is absolutely flawless. If I was forced to nitpick, the only thing I could say is the nut filing dust was still on the first fret. lol The intonation was right on after I let it acclimate on all but the bass E string, which was close enough. Most importantly, I have some that cost well into 4 figures and this little thing is as welcoming to my fingers from the 12th fret to the 22nd as any of them! Or any other guitar that I have tried. Amazing! I did not need any more guitars but I was looking at an IYV 300, their version of a PRS, in a local classified and trying to acquire it. After not getting anywhere with it, not being able to get a reply from the seller, I read about this little gem in the IYV group. I had a big credit on Amazon burning a hole through my pocket so I had a choice between this and a garbage disposal unit. Decisions, decisions. I did the stupid thing and ordered it. Except now I realize it was not stupid at all. I will be keeping this long after many of my others are sold. Plus, I found a better and cheaper garbage disposer locally.

      Glad you got one and it’s to your liking! Mine, though not flawless, is quite acceptable and after cleanup, fretboard conditioning and new strings, plays like butta!
      Like you, I also have guitars well into 4 figures, and agree that the stang plays just as well. Love the neck....love the feel of the guitar as well.
      Besides, you can’t play a garbage disposal....can you? 🤣👍

    Thank you for your review. I lucked out on your minor faults. No chips anywhere. No sanding needed on neck anywhere. I love this guitar. I own 3IYV‘s and again I lucked out I think on all of them because they came in perfect mint condition with no defects whatsoever and believe me I know I am lucky because those boxes they send those in are pretty scary. In fact I’m lucky they make it to your house in one piece but all of mine did. I have some high dollar guitars and my Martin’s are my favorite being a lover of acoustic guitars but I have to say that my IYV proudly sit my collection. I have been performing and teaching for 35 years and I get with these guitars with no problem. I don’t see too many reviews on these guitars but when I do the reviewer strums the guitar and it’s completely out of town and he doesn’t realize it so that kind of ends the review for me. But you on the other hand know what you’re doing the guitar was in perfect tone and I had to say you did a lot to convince me that my opinion was shared with yours. Thanks again for your review and you were spot on except for the few small things that I was lucky enough not to have. The latest news I’ve heard is that there was some problems with Fender
    And the headstocks of these guitars which are according to fender identical. And from what I understand from a few sources this guitar is now discontinued. This Guitar is 13 pounds
    And I’m not sure what the body is made of.is it alder, Ash which I doubt although their telecaster knock offs are made of ash so it’s possible. What is your opinion on the type of wood used on this body. Maybe it’s not good for those who would like to have this guitar but I am a bit selfish and I’m thankful that it is discontinued which tells me that I don’t think too many of these guitars were actually sold and that means there are not many floating around now and I for one and happy about that. I understand the neck was too close to Fender Headstock and there were issues with fender. Did not go to a lawsuit but did cause a discontinuance. Thank you again Darryl

      Hi Darry…thanks so much for watching and your thoughtful comment. I have been saying since I purchased mine, that this was (in my mind at least) the “sleeper” model from Inyen Vina guitars. I think they did a admirable job on this, and it quickly became one of my favorite players. I have a dozen or so IYV guitars, and all have been (again in my opinion) much more guitar than the price point would have you believe. So, in the case of Inyen Vina Guitars, they decided to make some redesign on the headstock of their “Fender” style models to avoid any future issues. They will be releasing the “changed” version of this model and have changed the actual model number to the ISMF-250 VW. I did a video called “Cha-Cha-Cha Changes” here on the channel going over what IYV changes are coming. Also did some comparisons to the Squier Classic Vibe Mustang and even the Paranormal Cyclone. The IYV “Mustang Hybrid” holds it’s own and has it’s own unique sound.
      As far as the wood it is made off…IYV claims it is poplar. Mine also has some heft to it, though lighter than what yours weighs. I truly appreciate your stopping in to the channel and sharing your thoughts. Happy to hear that you are enjoying it along with your others. I have a few Martin acoustics myself…keep pickin’ and thanks again! 🎸👍

      @@JimmyStewart1 Yes you are right. They are making changes to the headstock and giving it a new model no# But that still makes not many of the 200 models with the Fender Head Stock. Kind of like Beatles Butcher album cover. Just kidding. But it is kind of like that. I have an 82 or 82 Les Paul custom with a stock Bigsby tail piece. Now there is a difference in sounds between my les Paul and the IYV. But not different in a bad way. Which is why I like it. I was watching another video somewhere else where a guitar builder was taking this apart. First they use real bone on their head stocks. And the other very cool thing was that the flame Maple top was a cap and not a veneer like Epiphone uses.
      In my opinion it’s way better than a Epi. Les Paul. Plus I just tried to get over how beautiful that green thing may look. I’ve never seen anything like it. Epiphone makes a green Les Paul but it’s just a spray paint green but nothing like this green IYV. How heavy is your Jag/Stang. Mine was miscalculated. Mine is like 8 pounds. I have a high end Gretsch with the Bigsby and I was thinking this thing would also make a great surf guitar and it does in it’s own way but this thing really is an authentic surf guitar. But all their guitars or at least the three I have can play in number of different rolls. But the I YZIJZ 300 jazz they call it which is the tobacco Sunburst. I got to tell you I think that this Guitar is something all its own. I hear people compared to the Gibson ES 175 but look how wide the sides are. The 175 guitar like an acoustic. When I look at Gibson‘s lineup the only other guitar I can see that has that is like the sides of the IYV Jazz is the ES 135 but again that guitar is maple front, back and sides I believe and it’s got a round or roundrd back. The IYV I J Z-300 has a mahogany front side and back. And the back is flat not rounded. It’s wood and build give this guitar a sound completely all it’s on. I don’t know what else you can compare it to. I love this guitar as well. It is beautifully built, the fit and finish is fabulous and the fit and finish on all my IYV guitars are great. Again maybe I’m just lucky but the complaints I have heard are some of the frets have some sharp and mine are filed just right on all three guitars. I may lGibsons where I had to do Some work to get them right. And all the Gibsons I have bought new have always needed some sort of set up. These three didn’t. And they played great right out of the box. I think I had to lower the bridge on one of them a little but the necks were straight. Jimmy did you say you own 8 IYV guitars? What models? Sorry I am a little long on this subject. I I am just a big fan of these guitars.

    This guitar definitely piques my interest. In ancient times (back in the 90s), I was in possession for a while of a 60's Duo Sonic II that was super fun to play. There's very little to nil difference between Mustangs, Duo Sonics, and Musicmasters, but these JagStangs are a cool hybrid.
    I've been playing more surf these days, and have been giving these offset models more attention lately. $132 OTD seems like a decent thing to take a chance on, but I think I'd prefer something closer to a full on jazzmaster with soapbar P 90s . . . . . . . which brings me to a point and a request if you'd be so inclined, Jimmy.
    It has come to my attention that Indio makes an OS40 DLX Plus Alder JAzzmaster I'd love to see demoed. This totally seems up your alley. The perpetual problem with Monoprice is basically: Good luck finding them in stock, which I could not do with this model. If you could get one and would want to, Again, I'd love to see you demo it. Chris, I bought a Maple neck off of Ebay with the Mustang style headstock. I put about an hour into perfecting it with a less than 2 minute filing of the fret ends and rolling them and the fretboard edge, as well as a full fret leveling, recrown and polish, which is no more than I have to do to a top shelf Squier. The heel is 56.5 mm, which is 1 mm wider than my Squier Mustang neck. Less than 15 minutes of sanding remedied that. I paid $54.00 for mine 3 months ago. There are multiple listings for $53 to $65, but it appears that they're all made by Yenfinte

    • @JimmyStewart1

      To be honest, I have not really “pushed” them with heavy drive, but with some compression and mid overdrive I can get some very nice “Statish” type ring. Rolling the treble down a bit and popping the strings I can get some pretty cool staccato. Perhaps I need to do a video just using the Mustang with some pedals to see what can be done! 😎

    I have the both of IYV guitars the 200 and the 300 and I like them both very much and I am thinking of replacing the switches with the 3 positions switches in the 200 and I am thinking about doing coil splitting on the 300 and I know that you are not a fan of coil splitting but I would like to know if that would be a good thing or not and I know that it would be what I want to do but I value your opinion and if you think that it might not be a good fit . Thank you for your thoughts in advance. I have a few teles in my collection and I have to say that the fftl with the dual humbuckers is my favorite even over my Squire which I really enjoy playing but I have a couple of thinlines a Cozart that is a dual f hole and a Grote single f hole. I can’t help but notice that your finger work on this guitar here seems noticeably faster than in your Telecaster reviews. Do you find that the shorter 24” scale length is an advantage in this regard? Do you find it encourages you to play faster licks? I’ve wondered about this sometimes, especially since the scale length of this guitar is slightly shorter even than the usual 24.75” of a typical Gibson.

    • @JimmyStewart1
      @JimmyStewart1  2 года назад

      Hmm…good observation. I think it has more to do with the piece of music I am playing with then the scale length, but I do enjoy playing a short scale guitar like this Mustang. It’s just “fun” to play, and having fun especially with new guitar I guess could encourage faster play. Playing “fast” was never really something I spent a lot of time on trying to achieve, but playing economically was. Sometimes the notes that you don’t play, the hole you leave in a certain passage sounds better! 😎
      It’s a great observation however, and could in fact hold a bit of truth.

      Hi Michael…thanks for watching and commenting! I would think this mustang hybrid would be just fine for your grand daughter to start out on. It’s size would benefit a younger player with smaller hands. Most start out on a acoustic, but it’s certainly not a “written rule”. It’s more about hearing yourself play, acoustics being generally lighter than solid body electric guitars. As long as she is comfortable with the weight, I don’t see why she wouldn’t enjoy learning to play on the mustang! • @JimmyStewart1
      @JimmyStewart1  3 года назад

      You could, but if you normally play 10’s there is really no reason to change gauge just because of the shorter scale. If setup correctly, it will be just fine. I use 9’s on all my Electric’s, regardless of scale. This guitar comes with 10’s stock. If you are a bit “heavy handed” then a thicker string gauge may be better for you, but if you are use to 10’s you will be just fine.

    • @JimmyStewart1
      @JimmyStewart1  2 года назад +1

      Thanks so much for watching and commenting Lev….
      There is a couple of ways to do this…you could replace the two way switches with 3 way switches and a Mustang control plate. You will have to do a small amount of routing however, as the 3way switches are a bit larger and won’t fit in the cavity without taking out a small amount of the lower cavity corner. The pickguard will still cover it from what I understand. I know another guy who went a simpler way, by wiring a “mini-toggle” switch between the vol/tone controls to give him in/out phase depending on which pickup he has selected from the stock 2 way switches. I would search Google for Mustang wiring diagrams incorporating phase switching. Good luck, and thanks again for stopping in to the channel! 👍🎸

Out of the box, the neck was filthy and still had some white paint residue plus the frets were oxidized badly. I oiled the board and polished the frets to clean it up a bit. I also didn't realize how flat the neck is on this thing. I'm thinking of replacing the bridge but don't have any specs. Anyone know the radius and string spacing? I don't have the tools to measure it.
