- One of the big problems of working alone is not having anyone around to say, "NO, YOU IDIOT!" Here's how I screwed up my review of the Ruf Guitar V type! Check them out HERE: rufguitars.com/
Disclosure: Ruf sent me the guitar. No Cash has changed hands.
About Spectre Sound Studios:
I'm Glenn Fricker, engineer here at Spectre Sound Studios. I love making records, and after doing it for sixteen years, I want to pass on what I've learned. On my channel you can find tutorials on how to record guitar, bass, real drums and vocals. There's reviews and demos of tube amps, amp sims, drums, mics, preamps, outboard gear, Electric Guitar, Bass Guitar, and plugin effects.
We've covered Moon on the Water, played Bias FX, given you the absolute best in Stupid Musician Texts, ranted & raved about bass guitar, and this channel is where The Eagle has Landed.
Everything you've wanted to learn about recording Hard Rock & Heavy Metal can be found right here on this channel!
I also respond to your comments & questions: The best make it into the SMG Viewer's Comments series of videos. Loads of fun, lots of laughs.
Thanks for checking out my channel & please subscribe!
It's really freaking awesome to see a company respond to constructive criticism from the community so quickly! Really puts "other manufacturers" to shame, as it should
Builder has my vote! Well done sir!
My thoughts exactly. With that kind of response, they clearly care about making a quality product and are humble enough to accept feedback.
Turned out to be great for ruf, this video is getting a much better reach.
“You don’t need to put other manufacturers in quotation marks.”
i was gunna comment the same thing!
I havent seen it yet but now im curious. Its good of you to address these things. You could just ignore it but you care enough not to. Thats the important part.
"Metallica did it with everything after the Black album..." fuck that had me in stitches XD
Super badass that they were so responsive, so fast!!
I've never wanted a V before, but I may have to add one now.
Oh, now we can see it… now it sounds good! LOL No joke, the guitar is awesome, I am glad you reposted the video without the cartoons!
I really want this company to succeed, and for the industry to adopt their standards. I am sick of how it caters to tonewood snobs and even sicker of dealing with the hassle of an unsealed fretboard and the host of issues from travelling from and living in a high-humidity environment. Graphite/carbon rods can only do so much, and they can't prevent improperly cured wood (I am looking at YOU, FMIC) from shrinking over time. Ruffaine, and similar materials, as well as ruf's manufacturing processes, should be an industry standard.
It's good to see you can laugh at your mistakes. I've found that to be the only way I've been able to make my way through life.
I like the color, but a black fingerboard would have been nice.
Ebony would probably do the trick
Their fretboards are made of Richlite, a resin infused recycled paper. It can probably be dyed rather than painted.
This video was much better than the last… glad to see you living up to your own words and even better that Ruf joined in… solidifying the relationship between you, them and us as the audiences
Big props to both Glenn and Ruf for addressing issues quickly and not getting butthurt about it. I do videos and constantly have to make adjustments even when I think I have it right. 🤘🏼
This makes me want to buy a RUF guitar. Let’s hope this brand takes off
Was going to refute the JP Turbo album comment but remembered the many, many times I popped the door lock on my best friend's Honda to rewind the cassette to the first track and force him to hear it. Got to the point he tossed the cassette out of the car somewhere along I-64. Thanks Glen, for helping me relive hilarious pastimes.
Last time I checked, Ruf was a tuner for Porsche cars. Also, this guitar looks like a Solar.
I love it!
I would love to see you get a Bexgears or Leo Jaymz diy guitar to assemble and demo on your channel. I've been considering buying the Bexgears 8 string diy, because I've heard good things, and I want to dip my toes in the 8 string realm
Matte Blue Screen Blue is a kickass color and I can also see using it in a show where the big screen displays other crap all over it. Like explosions and lightning and stuff.
Ruf is going a serious player in the guitar world. They had my guitarist and I over for NAMM 2024 and the whole crew are amazing.
I forgot your in Windsor! I’d lived there before moving back to Fort Erie, love your channel as someone into production and instruments 🤘
Hey look, it's a V version of the longer Xiphos wing with a rounded off Solar headstock. 😅
What a killer guitar!!! I love the colour and the finish. Cool graphic on the back too. It was great to see Ruf guitars respond to your video. I am so keen to look into them. Low action is so hard to accomplish without compromises. Your reviews are so entertaining and I love your honesty. You're a legend Glenn and I love your Pink Panther riffage. Keep up the awesome content dude. One question, it looked pretty light, how heavy is it?
I have always had to reposition my strap buttons and ruin my guitars because they don't know where to put them
I was reading about the material the bodies are made of, Ruffaine. Sounds like a modern version of the Masonite product older Danelectros were made of. Difference being this new stuff doesn't crumble or fall apart.
This material spits on those "tone wood" claims.
The Drive thru gag is a classic in my ears. AAAAHHHHHHHH!!! lol I have that cassette somewhere. Thanks for all your vides, dude. ✌
Humility?!?! In 2024!!?!?! We need more of this. Thank you, Glen.
Dude I love the TV show theme songs! You have tabs for those you're willing to share with us plebes? I could probably figure them out, but you know..... uh.... lazzzy...
i've seen them at guitar summit. stellar instruments, and the fact they fixed the ergonomic issues so quickly is a testament to their quality as a company.
too bad i can't afford one. the prices are hefty, but justified.
Now that’s how a RUclipsr and a company respond to people giving constructive criticism.
Oh Man,that Ruf V is so cool,You deserve it brotha.👍
Cool! The pricing makes me think they are thinking like the big guys. A fantastic guitart need not be more than $600
I don’t tune in for clean tones, but I do LOVE clean tones. Unfortunately I’ve also grown an affinity for the way you break things down and when you find some really cool guitar (particularly if it’s hard to find in a store or on other RUclips channels) I get bummed when I can’t hear it clean. Seems like you can make almost anything sound decent with the right gear, but if you ever play clean isn’t that basically just the guitar?
Wait does that mean the guitar comes standard with "stereo" output? That's pretty awesome if it does, I don't know of a guitar out there that has that feature.
8:33 This is the playing i show up for
10:34 PASS ME THE BUTTER
I’ve got a Gibson with a richlite fretboard and it’s freaking awesome. I never understood the hate for richlite. But I guess the Gibson beard strokers get their panties in a twist if it’s anything other than traditional. I know this channel has a lot of Gibson haters, but I like them. I own 3. I also own 3 ESP’s, 2 LTD’s , a couple Ibanez and Schecter and a fender. Gibson’s are one of the few guitars you can play for free for life. If you get tired of it, you can sell it for much more than you bought it, but another Gibson, rinse and repeat.
Nah, it was a good meme. Appreciate the fact that you commit to the bit all the way through
Company response was super awesome!!!
Sound engineer first, guitar player fourth! (Sorry, I had to). Aside from that snark, thanks for being honest and forthright with your mistakes. I've never seen you shy away from pointing out your own issues and you always do your best to make corrections. I honestly think the bluescreen effect would be cool for a band to screw with on a youtube video, but yeah... yours was a bit much. Keep rocking, Glenn!
Thanks for doing this review again Glen.
Well, look at it this way - you DID listen to your own advice. The simple fact is that we often don't realise things immediately. It takes time.
Sure, you put your mistake out in public, but on the bright side you demonstrated your honesty and integrity by doing THIS video.
And that counts far more, as far as I'm concerned.
Remember people, EVERYONE makes mistakes. It's how we deal with it that's important.
That may be the most unfortunate output jack placement I've ever seen.
Superb breakthrough. Nicely done, sir.
Yes! I want more plastic instruments. I mean some plastic drums are fantastic too. They just say acrylic like these RUF guys say composite.
Lol, they got your mug on there. I love composite guitars.
The only other guitar that has this kind of look is the Prince cloud guitar.
Looks like a Swifter mop or something.
Good stuff Glenn i didn't care too much, watched the video to get informed of guitars that are out there and the visual stuff didn't even register.
If you are to have B&B superimposed on a guitar, it is only fair that you play a Winger riff or two!
That blue v looks so sick
There you go!!! now it can be seeing.
I can't help but wonder if on your Ruf guitar, If moving the neck strap button to the center of the neck. Secondly, I also wondered about the position of the strap button on the body, if moving it would help balance it better?
I never got to see the silly video effects and i feel left out. ha
Dimarzio are the masters of selling the same product under different names, i have a bunch of them ( yes i'm a sucker, sue me! ) and some are just slight variations of one another.
LOL at the end, the Evertune bridge is weighing the guitar towards the body... so... it probably still neck dives. Trash.
“1:00” and just like they Glenn’s career is over. It was a good run
Mr GLEEEEEEEENNnnn!!!!! you would love this SAMICK Guitar I got if you like this blue beetle sounding thing HAHAHAHAH
Yes dimarzio x2n the godzilla breath if pickups
Ruf, goddamn, that camo V at the end is fuckin' sick
I loved the cartoons imma go back and watch it again
Great Respond from ruf you love to see it
Props for trying something new!
companies should be forced to use the products they make
Got that solar headstock
that thing sounds weird and crispy,...there's also a way easier way to play king of the hill theme down on A.
Man, Glenn, you are a standup dude.
Omg I love that guitar. Blue screen slaps.
9:14 The Metal by Tenacious D
Should have picked Green Screen Green
i love flying v guitars. abbath from immortal inspired me to love flying V
Ruf guitar earned my support!
I want to hear more of your recording technique on things other than metal. You are certainly an expert at recording metal, but you've taught me so much about recording in general. Do you think you'll highlight your skills in other genres more often? Also, that guitar sounds great. You can hear that thing wants to squeal. you've got the sound down to a science. Love the channel, fuck you Glenn╭∩╮
You could have used the effect to add some punch to the jokes, but then you'd need jokes...
Nice clean toan(isintheballs) riffin.
Will It Djent?
The munsters and pink panther or was that just the panther any way yer getting better glen,o,
erin moriarty getting caught in the crossfire again 😭
the ending
I am absolutely not offended by this video. This may have something to do with me being Polish tho...
$3000..... Never pay that
We can all agree that Disney makes the prequels look like masterpieces.
Woooooow duuuuuude! Glenn, you're an adult? Wait... Adults exist??? People owning their mistakes and having the humility to say they were wrong about something?? Man, my view of the world has changed...
9:38 sounds good for that
Wait, they did a Willow series? Smdh
nice one...FOR SMURFS
One of the things I like most about Glenn is the fact that he's willing to admit when he's wrong. He's a stand-up guy and its why we all love him. That and all the swearing 😈
Well, he’s almost always wrong.
@@BAND-MAID-USA Most of us are almost always wrong, if you're think you're not, you have a problem of overinflated ego.
@@BAND-MAID-USA lol
genuine, word you looking for is genuine, its super rare these days and getting rarer. yall so damn fake!
@@BAND-MAID-USA And we've found the Gibson fanboy in today's audience!
If everyone starts apologising for over editing stuff on RUclips we're gonna be here a looong time lol. Good on ya Glenn!
yay, I wish children shows on youtube would do the same. #anti-skibidi rizzler gyatt
Poles show how to make good guitars, Mayones, Hapas and now Ruf, I am so proud
I think Hapas are German-made guitars, but Skervesen are a Polish company.
What do Vader play?
@@Se7s95 Pawel and Robert, the owners of Hapas are Polish or at least with Polish roots. The shop itself is located in Berlin.
@@HabAnagarek He plays RAN, also Polish iirc
Fame makes a mighty fine bass too
You didn't have to do Starlight like that LMAO
Yes he did. She messed up BAD.
That's one way to open a vid 🤣
She was going for Michael Jackson.
Yeah he did. She was so cute and now she's not.
@@kiezersosay49 Yeah, really tragic, I hope she can cope with the loss of ... herself ... poor woman
GLENN. There's a lot of questions we bass players have (Why does my band hate me? How I tie my shoes? etc). I wanna know from a sound engineer - do you prefer basses with active EQs or would you rather we play a passive bass so that you control the EQ? Also, how do I tie my shoes? Thanks dude.
It's good you're reaching out for help. It's the first step in a bass player's journey to becoming a more well rounded human 😃
@@sonicclang Why do my bass strings sound different from one another? Do I pour the milk or the cereal first? Am I supposed to play the bass drum too?! If not, why is it called that?
Not a producer myself but when I was about to salvage a broken Harley Benton bass (that has surprisingly decent wood/build quality, looks cool, is comfy, and was the cheapest 5 string I could get) with passive pickups and active preamps anyone worth their salt told me to yeet tf out that preamp and get some good passive pickups and pots and make it a decent passive instrument. Their explanation was that anything the built in active preamps do can be done by stompbox preamps, but way, way better, and that any studio engineer would curse out artificially boosted bass and trebles in a shitty way that is always the case with built in active preamps, they just don't do any good, ever, they only mess up a good clean passive tone. Now, if I were to go for active pickups, that is a totally different discussion that is totally worth exploring, and a matter of taste/needs what you prefer. But especially for recordings in a studio, active preamps with a passive pickups are a definite, absolute NOPE and just use a stompbox preamp if you really think the passive tone is somehow not enough. You will have way more control and better results that way. Or if you really want an active preamp, then you want active pickups, too, otherwise it just makes no sense whatsoever and you will get a mess that is hard to work with when mixing.
Why does my bass sound so bad? No I don’t need to replace the strings, they’ve been on there for 20 years and they still sound fine! No I don’t think my tetanus is linked to my rusty strings. Yeah I know they cut my fingers every time I play but the gunk keeps the funk bro
Not a sound engineer so can't help you with the first question, but on the subject of how to tie your shoes, use the same method you did when choosing between a guitar and a bass, and go with velcro or slip-ons.
It's awesome that guitar company was able to take the feedback of the issues and fix it quickly. These are the type of companies the player needs. Hopefully they will get your axe fixed up!
If guitar players weren’t such elitists I’m sure these would be much more popular . Amazing body styles, single hum bucker with 1 tone, and amazing tuning stability. Checks out all the boxes and uses materials less harmful for the environment. Stronger headstocks than a Gibson is also a plus lol
Glen one of the things I respect most about you is you admit when you're wrong, and you do what you can to fix it. This is an amazing channel you have to give musicians and audio engineers tools to learn how to create better music for everyone to hear.
All the plastic floating around in your bloodstream could endanger your wood.
Humility in a RUclips video? Amazing. Now if we could just get it in politics, we’d be in Mecca.
No politics turns good guys into demons that want to hurt children
That line of work attracts the power hungry. Thats why any sane person would be for term limits. Its how you can tell who is honest or not.
You should come to germany, here, the politicians are actively working to make it look like Mecca, judging by the demography
😂😂😂😂🤘🏻🤘🏻
Geez you sound so freakin corny lmao
0:06 catching me off guard
Aw man . . . That starlight dig wasn't right 😆
Yay! Thanks, Glenn ❤
Since you are an engineer first and guitar player second, why don't you review drums and cymbals? I had to prove to a drummer once how much better a set Zildjian New Beat Hi hats sounded on a recording than his Sabian B8 Pros. Yes, live his B8 Pros cut but, on the recording, they were way too harsh.
I dunno, I thought the cartoon/effect bit was cool. Not groundbreaking but not annoying either. Then again, I'm team "close my eyes when I want to hear how something really sounds/visit the website to see how a guitar looks.". Adults these days, they really don't want to put in the work. ;) jk
Bad joke aside, it's a really cool blue !
They say “practice makes perfect,” but they also say, “noone is perfect.” Which is it Glenn? Lol. Jk. Fuck you and keep them vids coming!
I went to their site, and everything in stock is over $2000. Not what I consider affordable.
Holy Shit... I'm fucking shocked that they
1. actually responded... Can't see Gibson ever doing that
2. Listened to your criticisms
3. Willing to make the improvements and changes needed to bring it to the next level
4. Be humble
That's how you gain lifelong customers.
I've been an ESP guy for 25 years... That said my next guitar is going to be a Ruf. No bullshit, no smoke blowing, I'm going to get one.
Thanks for the review Glenn...
🤘
Though if you want another esp nows the time to get one with the weak yen. They're so gorgeous.
@@QuickQuips I just bought an E II Arrow... Things is flawless. One of, if not best playing guitar I've ever owned. I can't wait to get this Ruf.
Finally someone playing the epic beavis and butthead intro 🤟
Wow! That looks a LOT like a Solar headstock! Ola will be pissed.
Ruf really missed the opportunity to use that huge wasted space between the 24th fret and the pickup to have 5-6 more frets.
POLKA WILL NEVER DIE!!!!
Wonder how many people will know what that's from? It's crazy how good composits have gotten. I'm glad to see a less distracting re-upload and glad to hear the company is growing.
I saw your quote and had to salute a fellow Dresden Files enthusiast.
