Hey! I’m the original OP of my boyfriend stole an opossum! Thank you so much for sharing my story. My boyfriend at the time was abusive to me, and this was an immensely distressing situation. I appreciated all the kindness I was shown throughout this process, which ultimately led me to leaving him and finding a stable, healthy relationship on my own. I’m sorry if I came off as stupid, I was in too deep and spiraling badly. But, of course, the baby opossum was reintroduced to the wild safely!!! I’m very very very happy and grateful for that. They have wild life refuges that will adopt out opossums to experienced care homes but this guy sounds like he has NO idea wtf they’re doing. This will make this possum miserable. 😢

I just meant, I didn't think it was possible to own one as a pet at all. I didn't know that given the right circumstances you could have an opossum as a pet of sorts. I just don't understand why he didn't look into owning a sugar glider which is more likely to be legal, are bred in captivity and are much more tame. Though I'd never suggest that to this guy. He sounds like a very irrisponsible person that shouldn't own any kind of pet right now.

Opossums have actually become quite popular exotic pets over the last 20 yrs and are even sold at most exotic pet expos. They are also in fact a MUCH BETTER choice than sugar gliders. They are also much cleaner and affectionate than people realize.
First story:I really hope the brother didn’t take the baby away from the mother. It would be different if he came across it because the mother died or it was abandoned. Then getting the animal back to health to release back to the wild. Maybe he should go volunteer at wildlife sanctuary or something.

This, I have recently learned, is called a "trauma bond." A narcissist predates upon a trauma-survivor (OP, I suspect) because the trauma-survivor is more vulnerable to gaslighting and manipulation. The trauma survivor reenacts their prior history of abuse through their relationship with the narcissist, seeking validation and hoping for a different outcome than what happened to them before. I suspect OP is an abuse survivor because of their empathy, and their tendency to over-apologize. That used to be me, hands down, and I am in the process of divorcing my narcissist (DIVORCE! DIVORCE!)

Yeah I'm from Kentucky and I guess that's why I've known they can't get rabies but that's the least of your worries. They have multiple diseases especially parasites. They're so adorable but around here we know better...stay away from wild possums especially if they haven't had shots. It NEVER ends well. It can be hard cause like I said they're so frickin cute but yeah. If you have pets too especially cats they usually don't attack them and I think that's why they just know they smell like diseases maybe? I've had quite a few cats I've found just hanging with possums on the porch but not directly next to each other like opposite sides of the porch. It's so funny because anything else and they attack especially country kitties 😂

I did some research a few years ago when we thought about getting a drone. You can't fly it within a specific distance from an airport, so we couldn't have one. But what I read is that you do own the air above your property to a certain point. It goes pretty high up. So that would mean that people can't fly drones in your backyard.
It's a wild animal not a pre-made emotional support animal!?! Sense its also a wild animal it going to be afraid of people/indoors, and would need alot of training plus hands on care for years to get it use to being indoors and around humans. Most wild animals don't stick to humans unless they raise by bottle from super young or has mental disorder.
1st story: the sheer volume of incompetence by supposed opossum lovers is astounding. There are pages upon pages and videos about how to rehabilitate and care for wild animals that are being domesticated but the fact that the boyfriend paid his brother to essentially scoop up a wild animal that was likely not in need of assistance and then to not even consult rehabilitators despite supposedly going with his gf to volunteer at wildlife rehab centers... not even GOOGLING what a pet opossum will require for food, activity, stimulation, etc., and then on top of it threatening his girlfriend is just disgusting. And it's WILLFUL incompetence, which is unforgivable bc he has every single resource. And since he knows it is illegal for him to have the opossum anyways, he has complete neglect of the laws or the animal's welfare. He deserves to be evicted, fined, and, should the opossum die, charged with animal cruelty (depending on their local laws). I volunteered with rehab centers and animal shelters and he shouldn't have ANY animal since he can't be bothered to actually care about them properly. Even a dog or a cat would be too much bc he would just throw them in a kennel or tie them up outside and think that stagnant water and moldy over-processed chow are good enough. Animals may not have the same emotional intelligence as us but he clearly lacks ANY emotional intelligence. Traumatizing the crap out of an animal and expecting it to love you is page 1 in the abuser playbook, as showcased in his treatment of OP. Infuriating.

where I live, there's a place where you can actually foster or help rehab wild animals. You kinda know how to sign up do the training whatever but it is free and it does look fun and I haven't done it yet and it's just like various you know random animals that you don't really keep us pets, but they got injured and they need a little love like skunks possums, birds, etc. so I think that's cool that that something the general public could get into if they wanted to and maybe there's something like that in their area

omg possum bf reminds me so much of my ex. he would tell me he loved me and then threaten me at the drop of the hat for not wanting him to do something ridiculous like that or asking to actually do something he said he would. I asked him to go to therapy 2 years ago when he said something nasty to me but he never went, I didn't want to do an ultimatum like he liked to but he never would do it just because I had asked, I am very patient and I think that was taking advantage of, then I was going through a hard time and he demanded I go to therapy. Wut. I helped him through a very hard time in his life and the moment I go through one it's all on me. He was a people pleaser and I was like please be honest with me and he would double down on lies and then get mad I got upset he lied. He dropped people pleasing like a hot coal one day and I was happy but he quickly became very controlling over what I did and only he got to decide what he did in ANY way. He would see his friends EVERY Monday and he would never ever make plans with me instead and he would only spend monday evening with me if they cancelled. Then, often spending time Tuesday would be cancelled because always something came up, or I'm tired from running errands Monday and seeing my friends. It was 6 years, at this point I just wanted to discuss this in front of a profession so maybe he would wake up but he absolutely refused couples therapy despite promising to several times.
We had an opossum take to our family in SF Bay area. Showed up most nights for pet food perched himself? on an antique ladder. Didn't fear our cats or dog. Showed up to eat, hung around awhile & walked away. It was cool. Don't keep & cage them.
This possum story is slowly changing my perception of Riley I get the vibes he doesn’t think animals understand us 🥲 and that hurts a little but to each their opinion lol btw I would love a possum , a giant turtle, two ferrets , a raccoon and a porcupine
I've always wanted to be a part of an opossum rescue and rehabilitation. But I'd never take one out of the wild. They are so hard to take care of. Love the buddy from afar and get a plushie. They don't make great pets... And they only live about two years.

I asked him to go to therapy 2 years ago when he said something nasty to me but he never went, I didn't want to do an ultimatum like he liked to but he never would do it just because I had asked, I am very patient and I think that was taking advantage of, then I was going through a hard time and he demanded I go to therapy. Wut.
I helped him through a very hard time in his life and the moment I go through one it's all on me.
He was a people pleaser and I was like please be honest with me and he would double down on lies and then get mad I got upset he lied. He dropped people pleasing like a hot coal one day and I was happy but he quickly became very controlling over what I did and only he got to decide what he did in ANY way.
He would see his friends EVERY Monday and he would never ever make plans with me instead and he would only spend monday evening with me if they cancelled. Then, often spending time Tuesday would be cancelled because always something came up, or I'm tired from running errands Monday and seeing my friends.
It was 6 years, at this point I just wanted to discuss this in front of a profession so maybe he would wake up but he absolutely refused couples therapy despite promising to several times.

We had an opossum take to our family in SF Bay area. Showed up most nights for pet food perched himself? on an antique ladder. Didn't fear our cats or dog. Showed up to eat, hung around awhile & walked away. It was cool. Don't keep & cage them.

I've always wanted to be a part of an opossum rescue and rehabilitation. But I'd never take one out of the wild. They are so hard to take care of. Love the buddy from afar and get a plushie.
