      I wonder if the particular success of this particular game actually came down to the Ravens' QB and Coach not accurately reading, or at least guessing, what the D line was about to do. The Patriots and Brady, on the other hand having far too many tussles with the Chargers not to know our basic defensive strategy and style, were able to mostly able to decipher what was being set up on the field and counteract that strategy with their own plans. Also, Brady during the game changed many of the plays on the line constantly throwing off the look to the defense, whereas the Ravens did very little of that, improvising only after the play had initiated and when their initial plan had broken down.

      Bruce Arians is great with quarterbacks and in what is likely Winston's last year to put himself over the edge a qb whisperer is the perfect hire.
      If he can get Jameis over the edge they'll have a franchise quarterback. If Jameis doesn't go over the edge it was his last chance anyway and now they've got a qb whisperer for the next guy who they're going to draft.

    Apparently the Chargers knew when a pass was going to be a pass and a run was going to be a run by the Tackle's foot placement before the snap. That probably had something to do with it. Imagine committing your line to that crash and then having quick slants thrown at you in the opposite direction of the run. Easy way to get five yards every play, and honestly I can see the Pats doing it if LA tries to pull this again.
    Edit: At 4:42 look at the linebackers: They have ALL committed fully to the run there before the ball's been handed off. If the Left WR is running a slant, that's a decent gain. All Jackson has to do is fake the handoff and sling it.

    • @thomasgarcia8118
      @thomasgarcia8118 5 лет назад +32

      Caesaroctopus Probably not there will be a different game plan for the Pats. The chargers committed so hard because Jackson doesn’t adjust pre snap not does he read the defense.

    • @verbfrombonsai8852
      @verbfrombonsai8852 5 лет назад +7

      @Jake Shattuck Agreed. You can reference the Jacksonville vs. Pats breakdown for that. The jags should have went for their bread and butter but they switched to zone after brady threw dimes left and right. They only made it worse. Brady gashed it and went on for the dub. As much as mamy believe brady sucks, he is an exceptional passer. The key is crashing the pocket and man defense. Zone opens up the routes Belichick designed. Pressure takes brady's precious time. That is what I think they should be doing.

    • @Rampant16
      @Rampant16 5 лет назад

      It didn't age terribly in fact the Pats game even makes this video more interesting because we got an example of how the scheme is defeated to go with how the scheme is suppose to work.
      The Pats o-line along with help from the TEs and fullback out-muscled the 4-man defensive front of the Chargers which exposed the DBs to Sony Michel. Brett mentioned it worked against the Ravens because the d-line constantly disrupted the entire Ravens o-line leaving the DBs with relatively easy tackles on the outside against RBs whose angles and stalled momentum prevented them from running over the DBs.

      @Rampant16 5 лет назад +9

      It wasn't really relevant to the Pats game which I am sure is part of the reason why Brett barely touched on it being used against the Pats. The Patriots are a very funny team in that they are so adaptable, their most defined identity is that they don't define their identity. One game they beat you with power running, then they beat you with Brady's arm, then they beat you with checkdowns to running backs. They even change their identity drive to drive. They are the exact opposite of the clearly defined Ravens rushing attack.
      That being said Chargers did do some 7 DB stuff today but nothing really worked for them. To my untrained eye it looked like the Pats oline just killed the dline. Chargers dline, unlike against the Ravens, was pushed out of the way by the Pats olinee (with a little help from Gronk), this made runs up the middle effective for the Pats (120 yards rushing for Michel) and gave Brady lots of time to torch the secondary on passing plays.

    I appreciate your edit in the description. This is one of those games where the game plan SHOULD have been game specific, and the Chargers should have recognized that if there was a competent passer / someone who could recognize what the defense was intending on doing that they would get destroyed. Unfortunately they didn't make adjustments and just went head long into NE where the offense took exactly what the Chargers were giving them. There was zero chance of this working in NE because Brady had full control at the line of scrimmage to decide whether they were going to run the ball or throw a 5 yard slant/screen so they got wrecked in the first half. Perhaps as Lamar develops as a QB he will be able to recognize and make those decisions at the line of scrimmage, then the Ravens will be a terrifying team to play, until then though the Chargers gave you the defense to stop this kind of offense. It was a brilliant defensive strategy for this one game.
    Disclaimer: I am a pats fan, but I called exactly what the Pats would do to this defense if they brought the same scheme to Foxborough. It was fairly clear how beatable it was but it is only beatable IF you have the ability to check the play at the line of scrimmage.

      Right. The first half was about exactly how the Chargers took away the run (and I think it was the pinch by the DL + Ingram and Bosa's speed and recognition on the edges more than the 7 DBs).
      The rest on how the Ravens playcalling DID adjust, but Jackson was unable to take advantage of the holes in the D.

      Gringo Bandito that’s not necessarily true, the Chargers were able to pull it off so flawlessly because they have on of the better defensive units in the NFL. It’s not always about the scheme, but also the execution.

    • @GenoAtkins
      @GenoAtkins 5 лет назад +1

      Brad Parekh the scheme is so easy to execute that the chargers played safeties completely out of position at linebacker and saw no drop off in play.

    • @williejohnson5172
      @williejohnson5172 5 лет назад

      Gringo Bandito: Jackson will improve. But Damn. He was a rookie, with 7 games under his belt who the collective intelligentsia of the NFL had to get together and try to stop. NFL Network did an entire segment on how to stop Lamar and the running game. Secondly the Chargers knew exactly when the Ravens would pass or run. There was no element of surprise. Thirdly. ONLY the Chargers have Ingram and Bosa. Ravens can still do well during the regular season running their scheme if they choose to. Besides, just as the Chargers countermoved them they can now coutermove the Chargers and any other opponents. Lastly, they invented a whole new defense to stop a 7 game rookie Lamar. He hadn't seen it. Morningwig hadn't seen it, his OL hadn't seen it and Jackson is supposed to suddenly diagnose it and know how to attack it? I know Brett said it was cover 3 all day but they didn't play it like cover three. Again it was a new "batshit crazy defense" and Ingram and Bosa made it batshit effective. Give credit where credit is due. The Chargers defense simply kicked the Ravens offensive ass.
      The Honeymoon is over for Jackson but for an 8 game run, into the playoffs and AFC North champ I''d say he had one helllafied run. .Lamar lost and lost badly. However, compared to the other rookie qbs he was excellent.

    • @GenoAtkins
      @GenoAtkins 5 лет назад

      Willie Johnson never said Jackson was a complete write off but, the whole point of the run game in today’s NFL is to set up the pass - refer to the previous vid on the seahawks. The defense wasn’t very special outside of safeties at linebacker spot. Otherwise, the chargers used the scrape exchange technique to take away the read option (which was being used against RG3, Kaepernick, Wilson, Newton in 2014) and played cover 3 like they had been all year.
      The real question is whether he’s an athletic QB who struggles to read coverage/has mechanic issues throwing like RG3. Or, is he an athletic QB who doesn’t rely on running the ball to succeed like Wilson or Watson. I get the feeling he’ll sit in between these groups and have a career like Newton. Jackson like Newton will require a certain amount of carries to succeed but his passing game will never be truly reliable.

    • @williejohnson5172
      @williejohnson5172 5 лет назад

      @@GenoAtkins : Hmmm. You make good points. However Kollman just spent nearly the entirety of the video telling you how unconventional this defense was even though he had scripted something like this previously.
      It went beyond even his analysis. Lamar and Morningwig have seen cover 3. They knew how to deal with that. This Chargers defense was new. Ingram was blowing up everything, and he wasn't blitzing. Bosa was living in the backfield .
      I'm not making excuses for Jackson. Jackson had a horrible game passing. I think he will be ok but the jury is admittedly still out. A career like Newton is not too shabby. I'll certainly take that over a career like Rivers (so far) and Palmer.

    Your analysis fails in one very critical way. You fail to understand that this mention this won't work against teams with a real passing game. Using this scheme against a team that utilizes play action like Kansas City or the Rams would be absolutely disastrous. This only works because Jackson cant effectively pass.

    • @Rampant16

    I watch just about all of your film room videos. I was curious what about this defensive alignment you thought was so revolutionary. Was it them using 7-8 DBs against the run? I'm curious because I believe that Mike Pettine has been doing that all year with the Packers. Well at least he was through the middle of the season before injuries decimated their D-line and their safety position + trading away Clinton-Dix. Also I would agree with the comment that you should do a video on your thoughts about the new coaching hires after the Superbowl. Thanks for the great content.
