One problem. Your strategy requires the outside linebacker to flatten or "fill." Only problem with that is if they run play action and the linebacker misreads the play, he will be completely out of position.
Discipline and then supreme athleticism. You can know what to do and just get outran/outplayed/outjumped by a superior talent. Gotta give guys on defense props, it’s so damn difficult.

The problem is that people forget that this offense has been around for a long time. It's evolved but it was the same offense that got Kaep to the Superbowl. Greg Roman was the same OC. This isn't a fad. Jackson is just an insanely better QB to run it which allows them to do even more with it. But the offense works in college and the pros if you have the right athletes and coordinators.

So Brett, 159 yards rushing against a top 10 defense. Also in the Saints video you said this defense can only confuse bad QBs, that’s now three MVP (or former MVP) QBs that they’ve confused (Ryan, Mahomes, and Rivers). And even Brees was slowed down.
analysts aren't always right, give him credit he made a solid prediction and a lot of people have his view that this offense won't last. As much as I love the option, whether that's my personal split-back veer from my highschool, or just a regular zone read, it's super gimmicky and you can't win every single game off of it unless you're the bigger and more physical team.

It's hilarious to read these comments by these Ravens fans now that they've lost in the playoffs, ironically to the same team they're so proud to have beaten 2 weeks ago. Brett couldn't have been more correct; not only was the Ravens' scheme shut down, it was shut down by safeties playing as linebackers, which shows how the run game wasn't based on physical dominance, just like Brett pointed out.
Obviously I have the benefit of some hindsight, but Lamar's dramatic improvement as a passer this season, while not dominating the Ravens' potent offensive game, leads me to believe that he will continue to improve as a passer and run less often. I think he will probably always be a quarterback who can run, but I really think he's got a work ethic and drive second-to-none... dude just wants to do whatever he has to to win. And I do think it's in his best interest, not for scheming or any of those other reasons, but just for longevity, that he transitions at least a bit more to passing more than running. He's also really smart. So as long as he learns early on that he's not impervious and needs to make sure he protects himself, I imagine his running will improve as well. I see a lot of Russel Wilson in him, a quarterback who can both run and throw, but has always been much smarter than guys like Kaepernick and RGIII when it comes to running. I may be wrong about this, but he seems to be taking a lot fewer hard hits this season than he did last year, and yet he's about doubled his yards per run. His intelligence has really blown my mind, the dude has improved in so many ways since last year and a lot of it is understanding the game. I don't even understand the game that well, but I can tell he does.

Just like defenses will adapt to their scheme, it will be the job of Roman and Marty to adapt to the adaptation. But to insinuate that this is all they do and we are waiting for it to crash and burn is not fair. The chargers took the lead in that game and Lamar promptly threw a 75 td to our TE. He is a very talented raw QB. He is humble and works his ass off. But he has arm talent. He needs time.
It's funny when everybody thinks that the running game is just going to die out Lamar can pass the ball so if they have a running game that dies down just a little bit Lamar do more reps and get even better at throwing especially if they build their team around Lamar will and then get players that fit his style they do that with Brees and nobody complains

Ravens defense is so good that they will generally be in every game. Lamar and the running game isn’t getting the victories, it’s merely allowing the defense to carry the team. Check Phillip rivers numbers. That tells the story
Alright so the Ravens didn’t get 190 rushing yards but they still used the time of possession advantage that Lamar gives them to help win that game, which is a huge reason to why they win games with him
You might as well delete this video because what you don't take into consideration is that Lamar will grow into a much more capable passing threat. As that grows the running lanes will open up even more. This season for the Ravens mirrors the way he took over at Louisville. He showed flashes of brilliance after becoming the starter midway through the season and then bam, he made a quantum leap into a heisman trophy winner the next year. Teams that adjust too much for his running capabilities in the off season will be dismantled by his passing growth.
LOL. A variation of this offense has been tried many times in the NFL. After some initial success, defenses were ready the next year. And the Ravens version will disappear like the others.

You will be doing an apology reassessment video just like you did for Mahomes, and that's ok. We just haven't seen two qbs like Lamar and Mahomes. You do a fantastic breakdown of the "force, fill, and spill" strategy and unwittingly expose why the Baltimore offense becomes virtually unstoppable. That CB" force" releases the Baltimore WR . That WR is literally set free. You now have a previously occupied Will on the "spill". The WR only has a safety to beat. No defense is going to let a WR roam free whether they think LJ can throw or not. Therein lies the dilemma for defenses. LJ forces defenses to play 11 on 11. Not the traditional 11 on 10. And few 11th men can match LJ's speed. I know this is post your report but you see what the Baltimore offense did to one of the best defenses in football. Spys on LJ do not work. Lyn said so himself. The Ravens dominated the Chargers. Yes this offense is totally sustainable ( the new catch phrase of the haters and doubters) all the way to the SB. Even if LJ gets injured RGIII is there to fill in. For all ravens fans. This guy is right, the ravens offense when broken down is not based on execution, but it is based on preying on defenses lack a fb iq, like he said. But do not stress, what this guy doesn’t know is the new OC Greg Roman. He makes the ravens offensive play book simple and tries to dumb it down which he does a good job of but he’s not a ravens fan and doesn’t follow and study the team enough to know this. Greg roman creates this offense for one reason and one reason only. For Lamar’s short term success and success of the team short term!!!! This isn’t his long term solution. Jackson was not ready to start this year they didn’t expect him to but you can’t predict what will happen they didn’t want to just throw him into the fire with no plan. This whole scheme was to save our season not to be the future it’s a place holder until Lamar develops. Also they lost in the playoffs I know that this comment is late. Wait and see next year this offense will be different because the best way to put it is Greg Roman is the king of unpredictable he’s not a one scheme oc he always switches schemes to cater to players strengths which ironically is what the patriots do not saying he’s bill but the concept and outlook he says is the same.
People are quick on the hate train but they did limit Lamar's running game pretty well. In the end none of this will matter if Lamar keeps throwing this well.

Man you called it. The Chargers were all over this in the wild card match up. Force, fill and spill with 7 DB’s. This wild card game between Chargers and Ravens will be the film that most teams study next year before playing the Ravens. Lamar Jackson is a talent for sure but take away his legs and he proved that he cannot beat you with his arm. I’m afraid he will fall under the same category as Vick, RGIII, and others. In my opinion NFL QB’s gotta lead with the arm and the legs are a bonus and not the other way around. We’ll see, but I don’t see long shelf life for Jackson and the Ravens offense unless they get the pass game going. Great video and breakdown... you articulate well. Waifu Wars Racing you’re right. Out of all the running back QB’s he was the one that remained consistent throughout the years. I personally love a quarterback who is a pass first threat versus a run. This is why you have RB’s.
Uhh I don't believe he said anything negative about the Ravens' defense though. In the video refers to their defense as "extraordinary" and he's certainly right when you look at how they held the Chargers to 10 points.
i just dont see him having sustained success. he is afraid to let the ball go, and those hits will catch up to him eventually. i thought baltimore had a plan to develope lamar when they drafted him, but instead they are just changing their offense to not require him to make throws.

Jake Johnson Not easy at it sounds, you can’t just get away with it. If you just hold the edge the Ravens can start running power and QB draw plays, which they do. The difference between the ravens and a high school offense (and why Roman is a good scheme designer) is that they mix in a lot of different running styles and looks throughout their formations, you can’t just focus on the ones that look like read option the ravens run the ball in power and zone a lot too. On top of that if you’re always holding the edge it takes the teeth out of your pass rush which is actually what the ravens want so Lamar can be given the cleanest pockets.
Ken Clouds whenever the tackle down blocks the 6 tech always follows, them the inside linebackers responsibility is to scrape and make the tackle. It doesn’t matter what level of play it is the rules and responsibilities of each player don’t change. And mixing up formations has no purpose other than to confuse undisciplined players
I enjoy watching your videos because I have a decent understanding of how football works, your videos on other teams offer me some insight on teams I dont otherwise pay attention to. Its also a bit gratifying when you do a video on the ravens, and come to a lot of the same conclusions, and notice the same problems that I do. Ive been nervously waiting for a decent defense to shut down this scheme, and leave it to Lamar to win the game with his arm, which i dont think he can do yet. The chargers are fixing to be that decent defense. I want to see my team do well and i want to see my new qb prove me wrong, but I really don't think they will

it's not the same scheme thought, when roman took over they remade the offence, they were even talking about bringing in option coaches (they brought in the old navy coach at least iirc) to help make some option plays to stall during the year.
Great break down. I was a OL in this system back in the early 2000's. You very much impressed me with your X's and O's break down. For the football fan who has no insight on this offence, this could be mind blowing. Do believe your are right about the expiration date on the scheme, unless during the off season Baltimore continues to trade and draft to support this scheme. Give Lamar a real pro bowl caliber Receiver to stretch the field, then the Lamar can show more balance like he did often at UofL.
Thanks Brett I kept trying to tell people that the ravens offense was not sustainable...all that running does not work on the pros. especially if you have a defensive coordinator that is determined to conjure up a game plan to shut that down....
Another quality breakdown by BK. IF a defense commits to stopping the Ravens read-option rushing offense it creates easier passes for Lamar. IF the Ravens staff is smart they should have a diverse play-action offense that piggybacks on the read-option offense.

As a Ravens fan, I was aware about this potential/inevitable problem. There is a reason this scheme was put in there in the first place, and that's because Lamar clearly can't consistently throw well. I hoped to see more progression in his passing abilities over the weeks, but he still has some trouble. Throwing passes over the middle of the field, that's fine. But throwing passes from the pocket to wide-outs on the sidelines, yikess. I didn't expect the offense to click after the bye, so i'm grateful they had some succes. I don't expect them to win tonight, but i hope it can be a somewhat of a close game. It was a fun season, too bad the ravens had to lose all the close games(wich has also been the case the last few seasons). Lookin forward to next year.

Turns out he wasn't. Baltimore fans were cheering for Joe Flacco to come back in the game, that's how bad it got. When Jackson started making plays with his arm instead of his feet, he got his team back in the game.
The Ravens knew he was a project when they drafted him, and if he's already doing this well considering the circumstances then I can't wait to see what he can do with a year or two of experience under his belt

Brett, I have asked nicely. After this SNF game where they minced the chiefs for over 200 yards rushing. I demand you breakdown the Seahawks 1 year turnaround in rushing offense. They had 1 rushing touchdown last year and now have the #1 rushing attack in the NFL. Not to mention you can follow up on your week 2 video and brag about how you were right!
I truly believe and my opinion is that the ravens staff is riding this scheme with Lamar until it can't no more while in the mean time they are slowly developing him into a pocket passer like Wilson himself. So I feel that slowly the offense for the Ravens will slowly develop into a balance of pass and run while not taking away what makes Lamar special. See that bengals play was spot on, but all they have to do there is make it a zone read. There’s plenty of space and blockers for Jackson. In concept, someone has to shed a block on defense to make a play. If they do stick to this designed hand off to preserve thier qb,, They will have problems every once in a while, but Lamar will hurt you if he gets good blocking. He still hasn’t even had a chance to break away in the open field yet.
I'm sure they will have a few wrinkles off of it that we haven't seen yet, it still begs the question of how long before Lamar has to start passing with Pro Concepts

I’m a Ravens fan, and watching them every week with Jackson, I’ve just been hoping teams don’t find ways to shut down or confuse him. Lamar is incredibly physically talented, but he needs to make less mistakes on reads and handoffs as well as become a polished passer to ever see consistent success in the NFL. And with Lamar’s success comes the success of the entire team. He’s an energizer, and the Ravens need him.
Every video you post is so melodramatic. I know it doesn't get as many clicks, but sometimes it's okay to say that a team is just good. Not the greatest, not the worst, just good. We don't need the intense speeches about how a new player is the greatest to ever walk the gridiron, or how some average scheme is completely changing football as we know it. When you treat everything like it's revolutionary, we start to notice that none of them actually are, because truly revolutionary concepts are rare. That's what makes them revolutionary.
@@cade75 The Panthers just made it to the playoffs last year. They barely lost in the 4th quarter to the Saints. The Panthers bigger problem is Shula was a horrible OC, they refuse to get Cam protection and until DJ Moore they had no real receivers. The Panthers were very good last year and good this year until Cam's shoulder injury.
1:02 I almost wanted to say the same for the Saints, if we a purely looking at Taysom Hill's production. Only difference: Hill is protected from throwing much because Drew Brees can cover for him, just like his receiving and rushing weapons, including Tysom Hill, can cover for Brees, who doesn't beat you with his legs often, if at all.
Lamar Jackson ran a very similar type of offense at Louisville and he was very effective in it. While you're right that a lot of these plays aren't read-option, the offense is a read-option offense. These no-read faux-option designed runs are part of the read-option playbook. This offense is actually the cousin of the triple-option offense. Like the triple-option...and like you said...the way to stop it is to be disciplined in your assignments. I personally love both option offenses, but in the NFL QBs take a beating running it. BTW, I loved your analysis here.
Yep, madden 19you can’t get any pressure without doing the aggressive adjustment so he can run around all day and throw. I liked it when your d line was better you could at least get some pressure without blitzing
Wow what a surprise you run squeeze and exchange with the Willy and End you take all that away. Just exchanging gaps pre snap and End takes dive Willy has QB and you have your mike and Safety flowing down as extra hats. I literally teach this to my ends all year durning the college season

What are the charges doing right now?
Obviously I have the benefit of some hindsight, but Lamar's dramatic improvement as a passer this season, while not dominating the Ravens' potent offensive game, leads me to believe that he will continue to improve as a passer and run less often. I think he will probably always be a quarterback who can run, but I really think he's got a work ethic and drive second-to-none... dude just wants to do whatever he has to to win. And I do think it's in his best interest, not for scheming or any of those other reasons, but just for longevity, that he transitions at least a bit more to passing more than running.
He's also really smart. So as long as he learns early on that he's not impervious and needs to make sure he protects himself, I imagine his running will improve as well. I see a lot of Russel Wilson in him, a quarterback who can both run and throw, but has always been much smarter than guys like Kaepernick and RGIII when it comes to running. I may be wrong about this, but he seems to be taking a lot fewer hard hits this season than he did last year, and yet he's about doubled his yards per run.
His intelligence has really blown my mind, the dude has improved in so many ways since last year and a lot of it is understanding the game. I don't even understand the game that well, but I can tell he does.

A prophetic video - you were correct, as exciting as it is it just isn't sustainable - those numbers can't be maintained. Defensive coordinators will adjust, just as they did to RGIII, Kaepernick and the "Pistol".

Just like defenses will adapt to their scheme, it will be the job of Roman and Marty to adapt to the adaptation. But to insinuate that this is all they do and we are waiting for it to crash and burn is not fair. The chargers took the lead in that game and Lamar promptly threw a 75 td to our TE.
He is a very talented raw QB. He is humble and works his ass off. But he has arm talent. He needs time.
It's funny when everybody thinks that the running game is just going to die out Lamar can pass the ball so if they have a running game that dies down just a little bit Lamar do more reps and get even better at throwing especially if they build their team around Lamar will and then get players that fit his style they do that with Brees and nobody complains

You might as well delete this video because what you don't take into consideration is that Lamar will grow into a much more capable passing threat. As that grows the running lanes will open up even more. This season for the Ravens mirrors the way he took over at Louisville. He showed flashes of brilliance after becoming the starter midway through the season and then bam, he made a quantum leap into a heisman trophy winner the next year. Teams that adjust too much for his running capabilities in the off season will be dismantled by his passing growth.

LOL. A variation of this offense has been tried many times in the NFL. After some initial success, defenses were ready the next year. And the Ravens version will disappear like the others.

You do a fantastic breakdown of the "force, fill, and spill" strategy and unwittingly expose why the Baltimore offense becomes virtually unstoppable. That CB" force" releases the Baltimore WR . That WR is literally set free. You now have a previously occupied Will on the "spill". The WR only has a safety to beat. No defense is going to let a WR roam free whether they think LJ can throw or not. Therein lies the dilemma for defenses. LJ forces defenses to play 11 on 11. Not the traditional 11 on 10. And few 11th men can match LJ's speed. I know this is post your report but you see what the Baltimore offense did to one of the best defenses in football. Spys on LJ do not work. Lyn said so himself. The Ravens dominated the Chargers.

For all ravens fans. This guy is right, the ravens offense when broken down is not based on execution, but it is based on preying on defenses lack a fb iq, like he said. But do not stress, what this guy doesn’t know is the new OC Greg Roman. He makes the ravens offensive play book simple and tries to dumb it down which he does a good job of but he’s not a ravens fan and doesn’t follow and study the team enough to know this. Greg roman creates this offense for one reason and one reason only. For Lamar’s short term success and success of the team short term!!!! This isn’t his long term solution. Jackson was not ready to start this year they didn’t expect him to but you can’t predict what will happen they didn’t want to just throw him into the fire with no plan. Man you called it. The Chargers were all over this in the wild card match up. Force, fill and spill with 7 DB’s. This wild card game between Chargers and Ravens will be the film that most teams study next year before playing the Ravens. Lamar Jackson is a talent for sure but take away his legs and he proved that he cannot beat you with his arm. I’m afraid he will fall under the same category as Vick, RGIII, and others. In my opinion NFL QB’s gotta lead with the arm and the legs are a bonus and not the other way around. Jake Johnson Not easy at it sounds, you can’t just get away with it. If you just hold the edge the Ravens can start running power and QB draw plays, which they do.
The difference between the ravens and a high school offense (and why Roman is a good scheme designer) is that they mix in a lot of different running styles and looks throughout their formations, you can’t just focus on the ones that look like read option the ravens run the ball in power and zone a lot too. On top of that if you’re always holding the edge it takes the teeth out of your pass rush which is actually what the ravens want so Lamar can be given the cleanest pockets.

It doesn’t matter what level of play it is the rules and responsibilities of each player don’t change. And mixing up formations has no purpose other than to confuse undisciplined players
I believe that the biggest reason why our running game and offense in general has improved is more because of personnel change than scheming

it's not the same scheme thought, when roman took over they remade the offence, they were even talking about bringing in option coaches (they brought in the old navy coach at least iirc) to help make some option plays to stall during the year.

Great break down. I was a OL in this system back in the early 2000's. You very much impressed me with your X's and O's break down. For the football fan who has no insight on this offence, this could be mind blowing. Do believe your are right about the expiration date on the scheme, unless during the off season Baltimore continues to trade and draft to support this scheme. Give Lamar a real pro bowl caliber Receiver to stretch the field, then the Lamar can show more balance like he did often at UofL.

Another quality breakdown by BK. IF a defense commits to stopping the Ravens read-option rushing offense it creates easier passes for Lamar. IF the Ravens staff is smart they should have a diverse play-action offense that piggybacks on the read-option offense.

As a Ravens fan, I was aware about this potential/inevitable problem. There is a reason this scheme was put in there in the first place, and that's because Lamar clearly can't consistently throw well. I hoped to see more progression in his passing abilities over the weeks, but he still has some trouble. Throwing passes over the middle of the field, that's fine. But throwing passes from the pocket to wide-outs on the sidelines, yikess.
I didn't expect the offense to click after the bye, so i'm grateful they had some succes. I don't expect them to win tonight, but i hope it can be a somewhat of a close game. It was a fun season, too bad the ravens had to lose all the close games(wich has also been the case the last few seasons). Lookin forward to next year.

One thing is for certain, this offense DOES NOT work on Madden because you can't really confuse, or "paralyze," an AI and every defender does their job.
This is so similar to Warriors' offensive switching. They throw so many switches and packages that you start to wonder what as a defender do I do?

Baltimore fans were cheering for Joe Flacco to come back in the game, that's how bad it got. When Jackson started making plays with his arm instead of his feet, he got his team back in the game.

I truly believe and my opinion is that the ravens staff is riding this scheme with Lamar until it can't no more while in the mean time they are slowly developing him into a pocket passer like Wilson himself. So I feel that slowly the offense for the Ravens will slowly develop into a balance of pass and run while not taking away what makes Lamar special. People might not realize when the ravens offense slowly changes as it's happening but it will. Adapt or die
See that bengals play was spot on, but all they have to do there is make it a zone read. There’s plenty of space and blockers for Jackson. In concept, someone has to shed a block on defense to make a play. If they do stick to this designed hand off to preserve thier qb,, They will have problems every once in a while, but Lamar will hurt you if he gets good blocking. He still hasn’t even had a chance to break away in the open field yet.
I'm sure they will have a few wrinkles off of it that we haven't seen yet, it still begs the question of how long before Lamar has to start passing with Pro Concepts

The chargers held them to 159 rushing yards but Lamar also showed some promise in his passing and has the offseason to improve that so imagine next season when defenses figure him out but becomes a passing threat

I’m a Ravens fan, and watching them every week with Jackson, I’ve just been hoping teams don’t find ways to shut down or confuse him. Lamar is incredibly physically talented, but he needs to make less mistakes on reads and handoffs as well as become a polished passer to ever see consistent success in the NFL. And with Lamar’s success comes the success of the entire team. He’s an energizer, and the Ravens need him.
Every video you post is so melodramatic. I know it doesn't get as many clicks, but sometimes it's okay to say that a team is just good. Not the greatest, not the worst, just good. We don't need the intense speeches about how a new player is the greatest to ever walk the gridiron, or how some average scheme is completely changing football as we know it. When you treat everything like it's revolutionary, we start to notice that none of them actually are, because truly revolutionary concepts are rare. That's what makes them revolutionary.

@@cade75 The Panthers just made it to the playoffs last year. They barely lost in the 4th quarter to the Saints. The Panthers bigger problem is Shula was a horrible OC, they refuse to get Cam protection and until DJ Moore they had no real receivers. The Panthers were very good last year and good this year until Cam's shoulder injury.

Only difference: Hill is protected from throwing much because Drew Brees can cover for him, just like his receiving and rushing weapons, including Tysom Hill, can cover for Brees, who doesn't beat you with his legs often, if at all.
Lamar Jackson ran a very similar type of offense at Louisville and he was very effective in it. While you're right that a lot of these plays aren't read-option, the offense is a read-option offense. These no-read faux-option designed runs are part of the read-option playbook.
This offense is actually the cousin of the triple-option offense. Like the triple-option...and like you said...the way to stop it is to be disciplined in your assignments. I personally love both option offenses, but in the NFL QBs take a beating running it.

This isn't something new a lot of teams do this type of offense. This reminds me of the 49ers offense, when Harbaugh was there coach.
