    In before people rip my head off for not naming New England or Chicago here. I never said Minnesota is the *best* defense, just the smartest. Other teams have a talent edge over them, but Mike Zimmer's boys still pull off some blitzes and coverages that would make any OC's head spin. That's the value of having that whole unit play together for so damn long.

      I don't want him fired (that would be dumb), but i want him to let the offensive minds (Kubiak and Stefanski) run the offense. His philosophy has always been run the ball and play good defense. That is not how you run a team anymore if you want to be a SB contender. The game so heavily favors passing teams now with PI and QB hit rules, that it's dumb to not use them to your advantage. Also, when you have the receiving core that he does, it makes no sense to be a predominantly run first team even with Dalvin Cook (who is amazing). Have a balanced attack like they have the last two weeks and to me, they are among the most dangerous teams in the NFL. Zimmer's defense has NEVER been the problem, it's been his stubbornness about who runs the offense.

    The Vikings D is an anomaly in the level of continuity it has - they’ve had the same 10 starters since 2015. So with that level of familiarity with the system and other player habits, it’s no surprise that they constantly rank near the top of the NFL in defense.

      Erik Lerström This is where the rubber meets the road: Their salary cap is extremely cap of the Cousins’ contract and the contracts they gave to Thielen and Diggs. So next off-season, some defenders will eligible to be cut (Everson Griffen) or possibly traded (Xavier Rhodes, Trae Waynes).
      In short, their time to win with their current roster is now.

    Brett is using “smart” in a different way than some of you are. The individual players on this team know the scheme so well that they’re able to freelance and their teammates know exactly what they have to do in order to remain sound. They’re able to communicate and make adjustments pre-snap that no one else is able to.
    Obviously New England’s defense is well-coached, but they don’t have 10 starters that have been playing together for 5 years. That’s what makes the Vikings defense so “smart.”
    At a macro level, the Patriots are just as well schemed or better, but the Vikings players almost always get the small details right. Something that only comes with experience and chemistry with your teammates.

      @@SnackMuay Not a great way to decide the best defense. Just rates them on how effective they are on certain plays, downs, quarters, etc. If New England shut down 2 of 2 flea flickers on 3rd down against the Darnold-less Jets and the Redskins, for example, they'd have a great rating for it. This wouldn't necessarily translate well to a good team, such as the Ravens. Just means they dominate in almost all aspects against the teams they've played against, almost no weak spots (but still only versus the weak teams they've played)

    • @SnackMuay
      @SnackMuay 4 года назад

      Jake Busalacchi but even against other defenses, offenses like the dolphins and jets have done better than they did against NE. A good defense might be expected to hold Pittsburgh to 10. A great defense (like NE) would hold them to 3

      @@SnackMuay Yes, but the difference between them and other top 5/10 teams is negligible. @Jack Keenum? And Bradford? 😂😂😂😂😂😂 Bradford is out if the league and Keenum lost his job temporarily to a rookie who has been trash all preseason and regular season cousins has issues to but your wild also zimmer had to get talked into getting cousins by spielman 😂😂 zimmer is trash with timeouts but dont put cousins on him and dont try n say Keenum and Bradford are better

    • @Sharp_3yE
      @Sharp_3yE 4 года назад

      @Jack First, that's more Speilman who picks players.
      Next, Keenum one of the better qbs? LOL He played fine but if it wasn't for great receivers catching everything and getting schemed open Keenum would look like he does rn. He's ok really. He can play but he's not really good.
      Bradford had a great arm no doubt. Sam isn't even in the league rn. No one signed him. Bradford had injury problems through his whole career. He was finally healthy his first year with MN and then the second, injured. Kinda hard to keep and pay a guy to NOT PLAY!
      So, Minnesota had 2 options. Keep Teddy Bridgewater and try to get Kirk Cousins. If Kirk decided to play in MN then Teddy would get let go, if not then Teddy would be the QB.
      Kirk was the safer option because he has a good history of not being injured, has a good arm, and is pretty football smart. He has his issues to.
      Teddy was a bit more risky because they didn't know how well he could really play yet since his injury. Plus, he's only played 2 seasons in the NFL. Teddy finally back and is able to play and he's playing decent/well for Saints. Good for him. Love the guy.
      Kirk is playing pretty good to right now.
      Those were the two options, Kirk being the safer one in the fact that he was 100% healthy and ready to play last season. Teddy may not have been ready enough.

    Great video! Vikes have had the best defense in the NFL over a five year span (since 2015). There is a talent on every level. With that being said, the secondary showed some holes last week against the Lions and the Greenbay game. In particularly Xave has not been playing at the same high level as in 2016/2017. Zim needs to fix some of the secondary issues, particulary in the first half of games. The second half adjustments have been nothing short of stellar (particularly GB game). SKOL!

  • @treyarea413

    Can you do a breakdown of the 9ers defense? Obviously we have a super talented front 4 (and talented back ups behind them) but this year we’re playing a lot of quarters/cover 6 behind it as well as the usual cover 3, and have been calling some really creative “creeper” pressures. You make great breakdowns and it would be cool to see some of the breakdowns of the rush and coverage tied together

    This year there were defensive players that took a pay cut to stay in Minnesota. That doesn’t happen very often. This is the year for the Vikings. The offensive coordinator they picked up is amazing and I’m sure he will get a head coaching job as soon as the season ends.

      Mr. Suhaib I’d agree with Hughes over Rhodes at this point, but still think Waynes is putting together a pretty good year as an outside corner. I think he’s a guy that you just have to accept is gonna make a few dumb DPI plays throughout the season. Alexander works so well as the nickel corner tho I really think that’s the perfect spot for him. I really hope they can trade Rhodes and maybe start to find his replacement in the draft

    LONG TIME LISTENER FIRST TIME CALLER LOVE THE SHOW. Excellent stuff, especially back-to-back with analysis of the disaster in Atlanta. I'd love to see a piece about how the Steelers defense has gone from turnover-starved and completely disorganized in 2017-18 to what looks to be a stifling, game-changing turnover machine in 2019. It looks like Minkah Fitzpatrick, Steven Nelson and Devin Bush have changed the complexion substantially. But there's a lot of hue and cry among Steelers fans about what are perceived to be structural failures in DC Keith Butler's defensive scheme (or at least how it's called), and it's hard to know how much of the dysfunction and how much of the success are on the play design, the players execution and communication, and on the calls. Obviously though, extremely small sample size for the current iteration of that defense -- but if it continues through 2019, it'd make a fascinating video. There's also a very strange situation in which it's becoming difficult to know who among the coaching staff is really behind the wheel of this defense. There have been reports of Tomlin being heavily involved, which goes counter to his reputation as a delegator; meanwhile, the organization also pretty unexpectedly fired its only OLB coach (Joey Porter), officially assigning that duty back to Butler. At the same time, they brought in Teryl Austin as a "senior defensive assistant" and "secondary coach," just a year after hiring Tom Bradley, who nonetheless remains the "defensive backs coach." All around, it's hard to know who is doing what, what is being done differently by design in 2019 (if anything), and what has accounted for the successes and failures.
