As a 49ers fan I'm well aware of Greg Roman's limitations. He's a genius when it comes to run plays, especially with a mobile QB, but his pass plays and ability to call them have always been subpar.
In the 1st quarter and throughout the rest of the game I was begging them to just run backside 3x1 slants to Bateman over and over again. They did it once in the first quarter and got a 1st down out of it, but seems like we didn't see it again until the Watkins fumble. For the life of me I can't figure that out. Bateman was drafted to be our more physical possession receiver. He was drafted for this exact scenario. And it wasn't until late in the 4th and it was like Roman said "wait we drafted this kid for this exact thing" and started attacking that.
For me, this game highlights the limitations of a QB who relies on his footspeed to get out of trouble, vs. a more traditional pocket passer who can beat the blitz with quick throws like Brady or Brees.
@@CraftySouthpaw they just didn’t run any plays for quick throws. This was entirely on the coaches imo. Lamar has a canon and can zip bullets into tight windows and make quick passes if needed, he’s just been inconsistent at times and a lot of that is on receivers dropping good passes and then on play calling.
The issue was that a lot of these were on third down. On third down and whatever, 7 yards won't cut it. Kurt Warner made a note about the Devonta Freeman Option play, where Freeman leans to the inside instead of immediately running outside. Sure, it was a good run, good yardage, but he didn't get the first *arguably* because it was like 15 yards out, and he lost a step or two on the lean inside.
@@CraftySouthpaw This is a bad lesson to be taking away from this. He even showed you Lamar throwing bullet slants. The playcalling was to blame here, along with a really bad fumble from Watkins on one of said quick slants.
4:39 shoutout to Lamar making that throw go over the guys head. Like, thats still a 45 yard throw and it wasn't *awful* considering the circumstances haha
Given everything going on, that was actually above expectations. Behind coverage, right in the back of the endzone, it just dropped straight down at the end right around where Watkins should have been... etc. I mean, that was right in the area it needed to be in, and I don't know how much more catchable he could have made that. It wasn't as pretty or as perfect as a throw without pressure might have been, but Lamar had every right to be pissed after that play. Watkins just gave up for whatever reason and didn't make it happen. Like, dropping it is one kind of frustration, but lack of effort/execution is just inexcusable when that's probably the only chance you're going to get at the long bomb TD.
I noticed this when watching the game as well. I think it was a great game plan. It forced the WR to win their match ups and the dolphins probably felt their DBs match up better than the ravens WR. This also threw off the o line protection assignment ad well. Well played by the dolphins
The fundamental reason this worked was the ravens have no running back so they couldn't just hand it off and punish that empty box inside. Not sure why they didn't just tell Lamar to reD the gap and run for it 50 times...
We needed Nick Boyle and Ronnie Stanley for this game. I couldn't believe we let them rush 7 on us all game. Our O line is in shambles right now though.
I can imagine how much fun the Miami defense must’ve been having in this game. The defensive line actually gets way move involved and secondary has higher interception chances. That’s what is so fun about playing defense in football. Even though it’s a guessing game as to what the offense will do, if you can control specific variables such as immediate pass rush or packing the box, defense gets hype because the odds tip to their advantage. Great breakdown!
Oh it's easy to imagine how much fun because they were dancing on the field... At one point the linemen were dancing right Infront of the Ravens o-line after the Ravens got a penalty on their 2 yard line lmao.. Never seen something so disrespectful.
loved the breakdown. i'm no expert, but a phins guy i watch said we used to run this all the time last year (when we had a good D) and only started running this style D the last few games. great video!
I was so excited just now to watch a Brett video, let alone on my Ravens, and that first minute intro just made all that joy turn into anguish all over again.
I also think a qb draw (especially with Lamar) would be extremely effective if you could bait the defense with the center’s eyes. With an edge rusher out of the equation and linebackers backpedaling, you’d just have Lamar in open space with the right blocking.
in fighting video games, there's a saying that goes something like, "If your opponent keeps spamming a move, it's because you keep spamming a mistake."
It wasn’t supposed to work for very long, if at all, in this game. Greg Roman is just that stubborn or inept to think he can beat it in other ways. And from the constant screens he tried for 3 quarters, it’s starting to look like he really was clueless until someone told him these plays in the last 5 minutes.
he misses two points on these quick outs and slants. 1) this is the point of the defense. to force this. rushers starts getting their hands up creating a lot of tipped passes which everyone knows turns into picks. 2) dolphins defense was still blitzing but the DBs were playing a little more conservative by the time the ravens started calling these types of plays. dolphins ran this defense a lot last year which is why they forced so many turnovers. looked up their defensive highlights from last year. this is nothing new. they didn’t start running it again this season until 3 weeks ago against the bills (supposedly because it seemed the phins personnel couldn’t handle it until then). that’s why the defense is ranked so poorly this year
Miami only did this for this game. They knew it would expose the Ravens offense. And I can promise you NFL coaches are breaking down game film a LOT more than he is.
The Belichick version of this is called "check rain." The idea is based on the turn of the center. There are 2 defenders lined up in the A-gaps directly over the center. The center can only block one, so the blitz is determined by which defender he angles to block. That defender would then drop into pass coverage (typically is responsible for #3 inside/hot). Meanwhile, the other A-gap defender blitzes behindcenter's the back, leaving the center blocking no one. You can see this executed at the 7:50 mark by #43 and #70. Both players rush the A-gaps, the center turns toward #43 to block him, #43 makes the read and backs out into pass coverage, #70 hits the open backside A-gap.
I like it. Makes me remember back to my days in Pop Warner playing LT as a tall, lanky teenager hahah. Tried out for QB, and sure, he was a little better than me, but he only got the position because his dad was offensive coach. I should have went to WR, but more friends of the coaches got all those. Some reason I didn't get put in TE either. Coach did mention me playing a position he knew I wasn't suited for and never complaining though, after our extra "pro-bowl" game they called it. We went 6-0 then lost like our last 3 out of 4 games or something and missed playoffs. Beat both of our local rival in blowouts. And our losses were always tied up until the end. Just one of those seasons. My best friend was best player in the region, and on our rival team. He was HB and MLB. Broke his thumb in 2nd quarter when our best player kept helmet to ball tackling him. He ended up being a sick freak after high school and is serving 4 life sentences, but I still remember those days fondly.
Man, the Miami DBs must’ve really enjoyed this game. Rarely having to deal with Lamar’s play extensions and doing a great job in those first 2 seconds with the play calling
I learn so much from these videos. It doesn't make me watch more games, and the angles TV gives you doesn't let you see what's happening, but it does open up football to me a little more.
In fact, they did the opposite of that. "Throwing the kitchen sink" means trying every different thing at your disposal, the dolphins ran the same play for half the game..
Still that endzone shot to Watkins was a great throw. Watkins had no idea it be there. I liked the contain after the blitz was in backfield for Lamar escape. Great game plan. Lamar will burn the next team trying it though. Hes that good this year. Wait til he starts running more. Baltimore needs to get Tyson Williams involved. There is no speed at the rb position
This may be one of the best videos I seen in a while. Like a few comments I used to run a similar play in madden. The way you explained everything shows why it worked and what they could have done different great video.
Dolphins fan here. Between this game, the wildcat debut against the Patriots years back. That forward lateral miracle against the pats a few years back. For a recently historical sucky organization they can pop together some memorable games😂😂can't forget that last second bomb td pass to that no name receiver that prevented us from being the only Nfl team to also have a perfect losing record 😅
I was screaming at my tv this entire game. For all the good things Greg Roman brings to this team, he is absolutely terrible when it comes to adjustments.
Most important thing why did was rush Lamar with players that can run with him like DB’s and fast linebackers. I’m surprised they even left the NT in on 3rd down and didn’t just bring in another DB for that situation.
This is a defense that works well against big play offenses. Offenses that are content with getting 3-4 yards on every play and work on long sustained drives make minced meat of this defensive style.
Some people see this and say 'bad television.' I see this and see something beautiful in it's horror, like a sand castle being demolished in slow motion.
Reminds me of the term “violence of action”. Be the most aggressive SOB and commit. And the offensive line can crumble under the pressure of simply knowing they are going to be blitzed.
They tried to option off the contain rusher away from the pressure side and pretty much failed all but one time. Their RBs aren't dangerous enough to do it with.
@@BrettKollmann fair statement on the RBs LOL. I only say this because in most of these clips Lamar is just dropping back. Thanks for you reply, much respect for your content man 👊🏼
Pressure is the key to containing Jackson. He's not an especially tall quarterback (an average NFL quarterback height of 6'2") and he doesn't have a really quick throwing release. He tends to want to use his immense athleticism to dodge, escape and get out of the pocket and run and sometimes has trouble finding receivers, checking down and making split second adjustments.
This tactic is really successful in football video games. A common meta scheme in NCAA 25 is to run every play from a double A gap set but sometimes drop a couple of linemen into coverage
I remember this game vividly. I had just recently advised my buddy to trade for Jevon Holland and unlike my advice to go after Josh Allen(Jax), Michael Clemons or Jermaine Johnson, Jabril Peppers or Danielle Hunter the last 3 years, this one actually worked and Holland has been a stud ever since.
You can easily beat that play with Quick passes and screenplays, it’s crazy that even work because most of Jackson throwing game is really based off short passes.
Reminds me of the 1985 Bears defense. They put everyone in the box and blitzed constantly. The only way to beat them was to throw the ball really fast...enter the 1985 Dolphins. They had no running game and their pass protection relied on the look out block. Fortunately they had Marion, probably fastest release in the NFL. That resulted in the only loss the Bears had that year.
It’s so insane how interesting football become when you finally understand what the fuck is actually happening I see why my dad watches this shit all day I never understood how he always knew what I was doing when he played me in madden 😂
This is the reason I love football: it is a true TEAM sport. In this case, they were able to run the same blitz because their coverage is outstanding. The same can be said about the Cover 2 defense (Aaron Rodger’s weakness). If you can stop the run with 4 players, you can drop 7 into coverage, the QB is gonna have a rough day. Same here: if you can cover the receivers with minimal defense, then you can load up on the rush. At the same time, fake blitzes are fun because the QB is thinking “shit, gotta snap and throw fast” but then you have linebackers dropping back into coverage and eliminating pass lanes.
If ya'll remember, they did this same thing last season to the Rams. It isn't their main defense. They've used it much less this season. So, when you attempt to say this is why they are a low ranked D, well that's just because you haven't actually watch them from week to week.
Flores is our guy. I hate that so many people want him gone. Our offense has struggled but that's more due to lack of oline talent and no big body RB. This game proves though Flores has complex and extremely effective strategies. This takes practice and game experience to get right though especially with so many new faces. Give the man time, he is going to take us far.
Brilliant defensive play calling and execution. X and Byron are perfect for the blitz. Brandon Jones looks legit. Holland is a future superstar. After watching him play, I truly believe we would've taken Holland over Javontae Williams regardless. Best FS in the draft. Can play in the box or cover 1 with ridiculous range and ball skills. We got a steal at 36. Trust me, I am very aware we need a RB. A stud safety is way harder to find than a good RB. We have a lot of young talent. Waddle, Phillips, Holland and Eichenberg are very good top 4 choices. We're picking #14 right now. Tyler Linderbaum and Charles Cross would both be HUGE picks. The Eagles are picking #8. If we gained a first Rder and pick 14 rather than 8, we won the trade. We NEED a superstar Center. Linderbaum had the best pff grade last year as well as this year. Give Tua a franchise center and he'll shine. Like any QB, Tua needs time to throw. Completed 81% of his passes. I'm naturally skeptical ,but he has a 91+ QB rating in his 2nd year. Marino's career was 87.9 I believe. Not comparing the two lol just saying Tua can be a stud. Parker and Fuller need to go if they're literally NEVER available. See ya!!
All right, now, I don't want them to gain another yard! YOU BLITZ... ALL... NIGHT! If they cross the line of scrimmage, I'm gonna take every last one of you out! You make sure they remember, FOREVER, the night they played the Dolphins !!!
Instead of 5-3-3 defense, Nickle mid blitz with 2 linebackers in the interior who either blitz or rush then drop into coverage could help the issues with a DT dropping into coverage

Ravens coaching has been propped up by the talent. Harbs was almost fired until Lamar started
@@frandavis1990 No he wasn't lol
I started watching NFL a couple of years ago. Ive learned so much from your videos. Also, youre talking about my dolphins. Thank you.
Glad you liked it!
The 1977 Atlanta Falcons did this for a year straight with success.
That's what inspired the Air-Gap Defense, which is a staple in Pop Warner football.
What....you mean The Gritz Blitz?
Thought of some other potential ways to beat that defense:
1. Touch passes
2. Designed QB run to the outside
3. I-Formation
Oh definitely. or Hit em with that monster stack formation to force them out of it 😂
This was one of my favorite games of the year honestly, sexy or not, it was fun to see all the dolphins being aggressive.
Watching Holland in that back field on every play was one of my favorite defensive performances of all time
4:39 shoutout to Lamar making that throw go over the guys head. Like, thats still a 45 yard throw and it wasn't *awful* considering the circumstances haha
Watkins just stopped running to. It was catchable. He either lost it in the lights or was worried about hitting goalposts
@@thatonewriter8043 Bateman woulda go all in for that td
Honestly what I was thinking, another superhuman effort from lamar just wasted lol
Watkins can catch that ball. That was a dime
This technique works so well. It's hilarious when a team can't do anything but pass
Remember the Pats playing Cover 0 a ton in their last Super Bowl run. The DC? Brian Flores
Takes a talented safety. - Devin Mcourty
Dolphins had one here
This is like a carbon copy of your "Kids See Ghosts" episode on the Patriots' defense in 2019. Coach Flo's Patriots roots run deep!
The Dolphins have learned my Madden Strategy.
Cause greg roman
Cuz they need Lamar for the playoffs and that’s a easy way for him to get hurt despite it being effective
He doesn't need to take a ton of hits
Freeman averaged like 5.5 yards a carry before that game, if thats no runningback to you then ok
Because nfl coaching is a good ol boys club, most of them have no fucking clue what their doing
We needed Nick Boyle and Ronnie Stanley for this game. I couldn't believe we let them rush 7 on us all game. Our O line is in shambles right now though.
Lol oline can't block 7 it's not possible. It's up to Lamar and receivers to get quick passes out.
I remember when Brett covered this same play that the Patriots used to make Sam Darnold "see ghosts"
Not only am I learning about football from these videos but I’m also learning how to make some fire drinks. Cheers Brett 🍻
You did an excellent job of analyzing this game. This was the first time I've watched your video. I'm impressed!
That Backround is so clean my guy! Great video
Appreciate it!
As a Ravens fan, I knew this was coming.
Suprised it didnt come sooner
We need a new OC
As a Dolphins fan so did I.
It was Beautiful! Finsup!
@@jamiesherrill1590 Yeah. While no one gets all the blame, Greg Roman deserves his fair share of the blame. They did not adjust to the cover 0.
when you have enough faith in your secondary, things like this are possible for your team
So this has probably ruined the Dolphins defence from here on in!. Thanks Brett :)
I don't think this would have worked for long (if at all) as a base in future games, so I don't think there's much curse potential here.
I speak for all of us when I say this. We want a Darius Leonard film room.
That man has a family are you sure you want me to ruin him?
@@BrettKollmann lmao make a video on Deebo Samuel so aiyuk can become great again 🤣
@@BrettKollmann he just got paid he’ll be fine.
This is my new favorite show. This guy knows his shit and puts on a killer show
Greg Roman kept thinking he was getting a cool wooden horse statue that wasn’t filled with soldiers… 35 times.
I learn so much from these videos. It doesn't make me watch more games, and the angles TV gives you doesn't let you see what's happening, but it does open up football to me a little more.
Dolphins defensive play calling this game was like me playing Madden hahaha.
Vikings, we got our true "meet at the quarterback" coordinator
What did I do to deserve this much content 🥰 I feel so loved
The dolphins really used the saying "Threw the kitchen sink" literally
Now they need a DT named Kitchens and a DE named Sink
Figuratively
In fact, they did the opposite of that. "Throwing the kitchen sink" means trying every different thing at your disposal, the dolphins ran the same play for half the game..
lol what i thought throw the kitchen sink meant to try every and any option possible, the dolphins mainly used one option
@@memeteam2016 lmao you beat me to it
We ran this is college 12 years ago. It’s actually been around for a while.
0:55 Anyone else used to just spam Toss Left Run in Madden 09? Would win games like 100-3 that way
The dolphins were just playing Madden lmao 😂🤣
Still that endzone shot to Watkins was a great throw. Watkins had no idea it be there. I liked the contain after the blitz was in backfield for Lamar escape. Great game plan. Lamar will burn the next team trying it though. Hes that good this year. Wait til he starts running more. Baltimore needs to get Tyson Williams involved. There is no speed at the rb position
That was a great catchable ball
This may be one of the best videos I seen in a while. Like a few comments I used to run a similar play in madden. The way you explained everything shows why it worked and what they could have done different great video.
The thumbnail is simple and perfect. Wouldn’t be surprised if this vid gets many views
nice to see you here
Dolphins fan here.
I've really been listening to Brett Kollmann for 6 years. Damn Time flies lol
One of the OGs!
Do you think a team that’s heavy at the linebacker/safety depth could use this look and be more effective having better coverage guys in the drops?
Imo the main reason Miami can use this look is because of the strength of their corners(Howard/Jones)....they can essentially operate on an island.
Some people see this and say 'bad television.' I see this and see something beautiful in it's horror, like a sand castle being demolished in slow motion.
00:20 worst blocking ever… I understand it was a screen, but still.
Reminds me of the term “violence of action”. Be the most aggressive SOB and commit. And the offensive line can crumble under the pressure of simply knowing they are going to be blitzed.
Couldn't you just run the ball, utilize some read options to set-up play action?
They tried to option off the contain rusher away from the pressure side and pretty much failed all but one time. Their RBs aren't dangerous enough to do it with.
@@BrettKollmann fair statement on the RBs LOL. I only say this because in most of these clips Lamar is just dropping back. Thanks for you reply, much respect for your content man 👊🏼
The dolphins are boutta start a new madden meta lmao
Field conditions definitely helped them out too by limiting Lamar's ability to move.
This could've been played on SoFis brand new turf and it wouldn't have made a lick of difference.
Dolphins should call this blitz “SeaWorld”.
And somehow Lamar got fooled by this…what a fraud
(Oh wait did you really think a MVP candidate was a fraud?)
The fun thing is that Brian Flores brought this to the Vikings last year and is doing more of the same this season. SKÖL!
Love the B roll drinks at the end man, a perfect ending to a chill film session!
And it’s tasty!
You got a new subscriber in me... I've been ranting about this for 2 weeks and waiting for someone to break it down like the way I saw it.
13:05 That's hilarious, the right guard blocking the pulling left G! I've never seen anything like that!
Wasn't this a trademark of the early '70's Dolphin "No-Name" defense? When you can do one thing very very well - keep doing it.
That’s that Mid Blitz in Madden 😂
Also didn’t help that the field was trash 🤧
Reminds me of the 1985 Bears defense. They put everyone in the box and blitzed constantly. The only way to beat them was to throw the ball really fast...enter the 1985 Dolphins. They had no running game and their pass protection relied on the look out block. Fortunately they had Marion, probably fastest release in the NFL. That resulted in the only loss the Bears had that year.
You put Old Bay in a mixed drink. You, sir, have earned another subscriber. Respect from Maryland.
And it came out good!
2:39 bro how did Lamar not notice the tight end is completely uncovered
It’s so insane how interesting football become when you finally understand what the fuck is actually happening I see why my dad watches this shit all day I never understood how he always knew what I was doing when he played me in madden 😂
Thank you for showing love to the phins.. more vids on other less popular or smaller teams are always super interesting ..
Something tells me this is going to start trending again
I was waiting for someone to do this video!!!! Thank you so much!!!!
Nickel Double A Gap Blitz.. my favorite all time play
I legitimately only live for these drink montages
