They are the greatest pass defense of all time. In an era where Passing was at its highest, they were in a class of their own statistically. Richard Sherman, Earl Thomas, Bobby Wagner, and Kam Chancellor all deserve to be hall of famers.

This defense use to put foot in my Niners a** for years…didn’t appreciate this defense until Uncle Sherm became a Niner and got a inside look on how smart he was and how that single high worked…Kam Chancellor made that defense terrifying.
Honestly, it might seem strange, but a huge part of the D’s success was its ability to stay fresh because of the Seahawks Offense’s run-heavy focus which gobbled up clock, wearing down the opposing D and keeping the Hawks D much more fresh. It’s incredible how it all worked together. Great analysis!
Getting Bennett & Avril in 2013 in the 2nd wave of FA signing was insane. Avril master of knocking the ball out = sack. Clemons under appreciated pass rusher. Bennett was a FA steal.
I dont think we will ever see anything like this again. They literally had the best Middle Linebacker, Free Safety, Strong Safety and Corner in the league all on one unit.
The culmination of multiple great coaches is such a great way to put it. Quinn at DC with Richard coaching the secondary, and Norton coaching the linebackers, plus alot of really good assistant coaches, guys like Rocky Seto created a monster under Pete. Everytime one of those guys left, it just got worse until it was all eventually over.
Kam was great, but Earl Thomas is what made this defense work. He was the hinge everything else relied on. The outside corners could play aggressive because they knew Earl could help with any inside route. If Earl isn't there to protect the post, Sherman isn't going to be nearly as aggressive. And Cam was able to play as a hybrid coverage linebacker because Earl could play deep centerfield like few guys could (Ed Reed and Bob Sanders come to mind from recent memory).
But Earl could also afford to be flying recklessly all around the field because he knew he had Kam Sherman KJ Wagner and a fantastic Dline with Avril and Bennet forcing errant passes and having each others back. The whole point of that defense is that every single player was one of “the hinges” on the team. It’s why their pre game mantra was always that “who’s got my back (I got your back)”.
@@phillipisayev1273 It wasn't recklessly. There wasn't a situation where he had deep middle responsibility and he said you know what imma go defend the flats. Earl was the hinge because thats the nature of his position in a single high defense. Its like an offensive line, even if LG is your clear cut best player on the line, the center is still the hinge.
As someone who watched every game, no, Kam was more important Earl couldn't do what he did if he didn't have such a great run stopping unit in front of him, and having Sherman lock one side meant he could cheat the other outside receiver more and deny the pass This team worked because it was a great unit, but Kam was the Engine
@@ThinkingFootball Disagree. Scheme wise the deep safety in a single high shell is virtually always the most important guy. If he fails his responsibility the defense is cooked. Kam being the heart and soul or locker room leader of the defense would get no argument from me whatsoever, but strictly Xs and Os? Absolutely not. There's a reason Earl has 3 first team APs to Kam's 0
Its Amazing that Pete Carroll has an hour long breakdown on teaching players how to tackle correctly thats been on RUclips since 2013... And most of these DBs still dont know how to tackle.
Yeah..Seattle also started having extremely terrible tacking. Idk why he never did another "Rugby" tackling fieldtrip again. Feels like the team's leadership got a little too complacent after having such absolute greatness for so many years in multiple positions.
I think a lot of players just don't want to do it. We're talking about pros who have been in the game > 8 years in most cases. They've probably been introduced to form tackles and wrapping up a few times.
Most people overlook one major thing this defense did that I loved. The first chance they got, they would take a defenseless receiver flag. From that point on in the game, everything was sold up. WRs would lay down the rest of the game which made teams run the ball more and they would pack the house in. I loved it. Psych out. Earl and Cam lay one hit and no one wants the ball. It was beautiful to witness.
There weren't any defenseless receiver penalties back then. Only targeting. Meaning u couldn't lead with the crown of your helmet. As long as u didnt lead with your head anything was free game.
Was it their fault they lost because they couldn’t keep Brady out of the endzone? Or Russel Wilson’s fault for not being able to outscore the patriots.
@@ez5324they had it in the closing minutes. Carol out smarted himself by passing instead of making them try and stop Lynch. They hadn’t stopped him all day. Makes no sense why he chose that play.

Mebane the Defensive Tackle was a super underrated part of the legion of boom. His run stopping up the middle allowed so many other players to be aggressive creating situations where the opposing QB would be under pressure while lacking good options downfield.
Great job! You're better than the pros at breaking down the plays and explaining things. That's great for someone likes me who is trying to learn this game! I wish I was more involved with my team when the L.O.B. was strong and dangerous!
Coming home from the game tonight against the great packers, dec 15th 2024, and watching this I am left with my head in my hands and a tear in my eye. We will never have this again.
I know Earl kinda plays 3rd fiddle here but his ability to play Center Field and go sideline to sideline is really what made this defense so special. Single high safeties aren’t supposed to have that much range (Ed Reed being the exception)
Sounds like as well as being talented, they were also very intelligent. Intelligent enough to learn and remember a lot of options and indicators, then be smart enough to react to what they see at scrimmage on the field. Incredible
My first year I lived in Colorado (2013), everyone was hyped about Peyton and the Broncos being unstoppable and I believed it as well of course, but watching that super bowl was devastating and eye-opening. Yeah the seahawks offense was amazing, but I remember this game more for their defense. They stomped on that broncos offense immensely, and it just seemed like they would get an interception every other play. It’s interesting cause after this super bowl, broncos switched to focusing a lot more on their defense which helped them win in 2016! Crazy to think that this super bowl was 10 years ago.
2013 was a special unit, but #1 Defense from 2012 to 2015 in a time when rules were skewed to favor Offense is why I'll always argue they're the greatest Defense of all time. They kept the most productive Offense of all time scoreless for 45 minutes.

that clip of kam blowing up the pulling lineman to then make the tackle on the RB never gets old. shades of ocho accidentally running into ray lewis, only in reverse sizes -.-
In HS we played a single high out of a 3-3-5 base. It’s funny how we used some of these concepts and back then it not realizing the different personal was so confusing, then in college Ga.State we ran a traditional 4-3 and i felt stupid seeing that the change in personnel doesn’t mess with the fundamentals.
It seems like this unit really accelerated pattern matching rules used by teams in the NFL. That's probably their biggest ongoing legacy. Talent really carried the unit, but it's true that their defensive setup also caught teams off guard. Having both factors at once is rare, and thus so was their performance. Teams adjusted, so future defenses didn't benefit as much from pattern match...although that back and forth of how defenses apply coverage rules continues to this day. Much harder to put that much talent on one roster.
U need to do a vid on last years chiefs defense, highlighting their use of crazy unique disguises paired with their high use of pressures sent from every direction, that was all glued together by their versatile personal. Spags is one of a kind, gotta highlight what he did last year
They ran that cover 3 - match coverage with Bobby Wagner covering tight ends and inside receivers , with the safety down in the box (kam) so you couldn’t even run the ball
As a 49er fan this was my personal favorite defense they literally was our worst matchup even as Superbowl contenders 😭😭😭😭😭 Colin Kaepernick vs Russell Wilson 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
As a Seahawks fan, I 100% agreed with Richard Sherman when he said the NFC Championship Game against the Niners was the real Super Bowl. The intensity of the hard-hitting football from both teams in that game is unreal.
You only have to ask Vernon Davis how good and scary Kam was. There have been very few if any other safeties that were feared like Kam was, and there are always key guys, but he was the heart and soul of that defense that kept all the personalities working together. When he had to retire, none of it worked quite the same ever again.
Awesome man! Thanks! Just what I been looking for. Though I wondered mainly like what happened to the Bengals defense this year, but I think this kind of shows what the problem is. You didn't really mention WHY they been running two high, and that was because that was a movement to dare qbs to throw and it relies upon ability to stop the run. It is why Lou's defense was so good and copied so much. Before that there was a lot more 1 high. But that is what took Cincy to the super bowl. But teams have figured out how to stunt that defense and unless you are able to disguise, you will be exploited. Though injuries were a factor, these past two years having a sub 10 worst defenses just won't cut it. That a long with them not addressing safety or ILB really made it tough on the rest of the D, and now Lou is jobless. and these strong running teams are making a run for it.
Do you think you could add more historical context to these vids? I'd really like to know why the legion of boom stopped being as big of a deal. Did players get traded, age out, or did the league figure out some counter play? I know you touched on it a little at the end but more sounds interesting to me. Love the vids :)
Scheme wise the Seahawks didn't do anything overly special. It was a pretty standard Under front with single high safety. What made the LOB special was personnel. Two big physical corners, Kam, and Earl is a rare mix. That allowed Pete to consistently employ press coverage in his cover 3 which is just unfair. The only defense that exceeds the Seahawks in terms of talent imo were the 2000 Baltimore Ravens. I'm not meaning to start an argument over which defense was better, thats not what I'm saying. What I'm saying is find a youtube video that breaks down the 2000 Ravens scheme on defense. You can't because it doesn't really exist. The Ravens scheme was "we're going to line up in front of you and beat the hell out of you." Then on the other side of the spectrum I'd put a team like the Tampa-2 Buccaneers or Zone Blitz Steelers who were more scheme reliant. On that scheme vs personnel spectrum, the LOB unquestionably fell more on the personnel side. And you just can't keep that together for long.
When you sorta break down the 'best' defenses of the last two decades, there is nothing special about them outside of having amazing talents that fit a consistent scheme/system. Simplicity has always been key for NFL defenses because they are already playing behind (against better) offenses who are gaining the upper hand on them. Urlacher on record has explained for the 2006 Bears they go into games with 5 defensive calls: Cover 2, Cover 3, Man blitz, zone blitz and 3rd down stuff. As was stated by TF Cover 1 keeps the run game honest on early downs if the run game can't break big gains. Obviously the Seahawks had the front 7 personnel to close up those gaps and get at the runner if things broke down. Then on passing downs they had two great corners who can be physical against receiver matchups to jam them at the line of scrimmage. Cover 1/3 is still played today (obvious ex Caroll guys in DC Gus Bradley and HC Dan Quinn) and those respective coaches/coordinators may not have the best athletes to be consistent with the defense. But they still get intended results.
This is what has bothered me so much about the Packers defense for over a decade. No physicality at all, they build the team around finesse & pass defense, and they still get torched eventually. Its the most frustrating thing ever. Year in year out, their run defense gets absolutely cooked and leads to them getting out time of possessioned and physical every single game. Its a losing recipe 9/10 times unless your offense is prolific enough to handle constant scoring. Its weird too because you'd figure they'd fix it by now, especially being an outdoors team up north. All those teams typically have good defenses... Bills, Patriots, Steelers, Ravens, Seahawks, etc. Only the Browns & Bengals have had somewhat questionable and non physical defenses in recent memory, and even then, the Browns have had a really good defense lately.
crazy i just started really trying to learn the game of football more in depth and only had some knowledge of 2010s football when i used to watch more then boom …. this video drops lol

I almost agree with this, but I think you're underselling Earl. Earl Thomas made everything work - you can't play Kam close to the box without Earl's ridiculous range.

We need a video of the 2015 no fly zone
Perfect defense
As a 49er fan this was my personal favorite defense they literally was our worst matchup even as Superbowl contenders 😭😭😭😭😭 Colin Kaepernick vs Russell Wilson 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
As a Seahawks fan, I 100% agreed with Richard Sherman when he said the NFC Championship Game against the Niners was the real Super Bowl. The intensity of the hard-hitting football from both teams in that game is unreal.
Taking notes for my madden franchise rn.
Mann take me back😢
This is how I play defense on madden. An ever changing cover 3 taking away whatever area they’re targeting to beat the cover 3
Kam was my fav in the team bro was a giant hit stick plus earl thomas then Sherman’s lock down defense just made em in unstoppable team
You only have to ask Vernon Davis how good and scary Kam was. There have been very few if any other safeties that were feared like Kam was, and there are always key guys, but he was the heart and soul of that defense that kept all the personalities working together. When he had to retire, none of it worked quite the same ever again.
Not even just Vernon davis any tightend or reciever who's ever been hit by Kam lol
I'm just glad we at least had 1 good team during that time
God that was a fun time to be a Seahawks fan
Hopefully Mike Macdonald can bring the Seahawks defense back to how it was
Do you think you could add more historical context to these vids?
My absolute FAVORITE football RUclipsr!! I always stop what I’m doing when you upload bro.
I hope my Brownies continue to have a good defense this season.
Love me some Jim Schwartz - one of the best DCs out there
LOB = Underrated line, physical big corners, 3 pro bowl linebackers if you include Kam who played like one and Earl the missile roaming and LAUNCHING. Some of their highlights look sped up like 1.25x lol.
i think it would be nice to see the early 2000s bears and their tampa 2 defense
I almost agree with this, but I think you're underselling Earl. Earl Thomas made everything work - you can't play Kam close to the box without Earl's ridiculous range.
Earl Thomas made that defense click…Without him erasing mistakes it easily beatable
Where did you get old all-22 film? This breakdown was awesome!
Coaching friend gave it to me
@@ThinkingFootball so cool. Thanks for sharing!
Chiming in to say even though I didn't watch the vid till now, I preferred the old title!
