As a Seahawks fan, this was the best day in sports history. It’s really a shame that the national attention for the Seahawks was defined by that one play the following Super Bowl, it seemed to entirely erase the memory of sheer dominance from the Legion of Boom the year before, and now that’s the only thing that gets talked about. One bad play erased the most dominant defense in the modern NFL. Seeing the Chiefs go back to back can’t help but wonder what the national narrative would be if that one play had gone differently. That loss the following year broke the Seahawks.

But hey at least you got to watch your team in a few superbowls. The thing about Super Bowl is I feel that it was a PI in the inzone that wasn't called because it was against the Patriots. The defender hit the receiver to get to the ball. In my book, that is the definition of a PI. The NFL couldn't let the Seahawks win the game, so the referees let the play stand. I am a die-hard Hawks fan so watching that play make my blood boil.

That Denver offense wasn't just a great offense, it was the most prolific offense of all time. People were handing the Broncos the trophy for 2 weeks before the game was even played. The general belief was that the NFL was now an offensive league, and that the Seahawks were about to get a rude awakening when they met a truly great offensive team.
Side note. The NFC championship that year was the real Superbowl. A down to the wire game with the 49ers decided by a tipped pass for an interception in the end zone to seal the game. Warren Moon was commenting and screamed like a little girl. The 49ers also had a punishing defense that also would have throttled the Broncos had they won the NFC championship.

Even here you said the D was led by the LOB, and yes, the LOB was incredible and loud about it, but the D-Line, Edge and LBs on this team were incredible as well. Brandon Mebane, Red Bryant, Chris Clemons, Michael Bennett, Cliff Avril, Bruce Irvin, Bobby Wagner, KJ Wright, and Malcom Smith as well as other rotational role players that were undervalued in the league. If you can only appreciate a game if it's competitive you're a weak sports fan.
Every so often you just need to see a team get absolutely embarrassed and destroyed. This game was a work of art. It even provided an opening act to the next two Super Bowls as the Seahawks looked unstoppable only to be beaten at the one yard line by the Patriots the next year, and for Peyton to have his moment of redemption and go out on top in Super Bowl 50. Saying this was bad is like saying it was bad Goku and Piccolo got one shot by Raditz, or that Ichigo getting embarrassed by Byakuya was bad. Those losses were important moments in the build up of the narrative.

Calling this the worst Super Bowl is odd in my opinion. I’ll put aside for just a second that I’m a Seahawks fan and that this was one of the greatest days of my life. But just look at this Seahawks team in the grand scheme of that season. In so many seasons we see a dominant team throughout the regular season and then they don’t show up in a playoff game. It’s very common. The most famous example is of course the Patriots loss to the Giants ruining their undefeated season. But the Seahawks in 2013 had a fantastic regular season, and a thrilling playoff series. But more importantly this all culminated into their very best game being played in the Super Bowl. They didn’t have a decent super bowl game, it was extraordinarily dominant, against the greatest offense of all time. That is rare and that is special. Zooming out from just that season, in the last 10 to 15 years, name a team more dominant than the 2013 Seahawks. That team was so dominant to another level rarely seen that they would destroy most of the super bowl teams if not all in the 21st century. That’s why a game like that was so special. It certified greatness on a level rarely ever seen before.

I would argue that either SB 24 or 53 were worse. (I would argue that 53 is the worst SB of all time). 24 was a the worst blowout in SB history with the Niners beating the Broncos 55-10. Then 53 was an absolute snooze fest that had the Pats beating the Rams 13-3, the lowest amount of points scored in a Super Bowl, which was previously held by SB 8. Now, 53 is not just the worst one because of that. Pretty much nobody wanted New England back in the SB, but at least they got there after a great game against KC. The Rams only made it because of an TERRIBLE missed PI call and they couldn’t even put up a fight against the Patriots. It was literally the worst outcome for the Super Bowl. Everybody wanted it to be Chiefs vs Rams after the Regular season game here they got into the greatest offensive shootout in NFL history, and that obviously didn’t happen. But, then we were robbed of a Brees vs Brady SB because the Rams made it off of a missed call. It was terrible, I couldn’t even pay attention to the game. People always talk about how New Orleans made a lot of mistakes, and yeah they did. But no football game, let alone a Championship game is going to be played perfectly by any team. When it came down to it, the game was in the Saints’ hands by the end and the refs completely blew the game up with that missed PI call. Missed opportunities or not, the refs completely ruined the game.

If you watch the 10 year anniversary videos the Seahawks put together for their Super Bowl run, Sherman points out pretty early what the secret to the Broncos success was - late game drives against gassed defenses. If Denver couldn't move the ball against their opponents for all 4 quarters, you had to find your last reserves against Peyton in the fourth. So the game plan for the Hawks was to stifle them early, and use their conditioning to keep pace with the offense late in the game. They studied film religiously, they ran drills to cover Welker and Thomas specifically, and they had some very timely turnovers to put the game away before the halftime show rolled out. The Broncos still hung more than 300 yards on them, racking up more than 100 yards in penalty flags to move the ball, and only came away with one scoring drive and a 2 pt conversion. Hard to overcome 4 turnovers in the biggest game and come away with a win. And it's not to diminish the efforts of the offense or even special teams for Seattle - they scored in all 3 aspects of the game, with a rushing TD, 2 receiving TDs, and Harvin returning a second half kick-off for the back-breaker. It may have been a snoozefest for the non-Seattle fans watching from home, and an absolute nightmare for Denver fans, but what looks like on paper as the "worst" Super Bowl in years was the greatest night in Seahawks history. Plus, I would contend that with Super Bowl LV behind us, that stands to be the other worst blowout of recent memory.

I watched all the game day run -up shows on ESPN, FOX, NBC, and CBS, and of all the commentators, mostly consisting of ex-players/ coaches, and the like, the ONLY person picking the Seahawks was Chris Berman on ESPN, (a non-athlete,) and he said that the 'Hawks would not only win, but do it in a BLOWOUT!!! Even Mike Ditka, who LOVES the Defence picked the Broncos.
A couple days after the Game, I was watching a 'post mortem' press conference on the NFL Network from Denver, where John Fox, and John Elway were apologizing for Manning's poor performance, saying that he just had an off day, and was 'not on his game'. This atitude just pissed me off royal!! Even in such a monumental beat-down as they suffered, they couldn't bring themselves to admit that Seattle was just a BETTER TEAM, and Manning had a lousy game, because THE SEAHAWKS REFUSED TO ALLOW HIM TO HAVE A GOOD GAME!!!
