It's J.T. O'Sullivan!! Dude was a 49ers QB for a minute. He was a bit of a hot head and a gunslinger, but I loved him. Had he been in the right situation at the right time, he could have been a dangerous QB to play against.
One thing I want to note about cover 2 as a former lb, that middle line backer needs to get a really deep drop in cover 2 usually his drop is 10-12 yards from the spot. To be a cover 2 team you need a linebacker who is going to be able to make that drop quick enough to take away that deep in or cut off the deep post
Love the channel JT! Way too many commentators focus on the TMZ-gossip side of the sport, instead the X's and O's (i.e. real football)! Thanks for sharing your knowledge and perspective.
Great stuff. Coming from a rare Dutch NFL fan who wishes time zones did not exist. I hate those postgame screaming battles that are all drama and totally non informative.
So true, they either know very little, or they are instructed to tell you very little, keeping it fun for the lay fans. They basically just say what the story of the game is. This team scored, that guy had an awful game, etc.
YES thank You for this vid! In my team in London I hear the qbs say "oh when you add a motion you can tell if its man or zone so its all fine" and then they make a stupid throw because they don't know how the zone is being played. Very well explained in this vid thanks!
James James I don't actually play. I just like attending the training sessions and help out where I can as a water boy. But the teams called the London Blitz but its good to hear you're playing uni ball.
I loved calling smashes on Cover 2. The corner stays and protects the underneath hitch and the safety usually can’t get to the receiver running a corner in time.
I had a vague sense of what zone coverages were before but this was such a good breakdown. The visuals were really helpful. There is often so much jargon thrown around in football analysis without explanation. Thanks!
dude your videos are so awesome man, keep up the great work. i never played football and wasnt a fan as a kid, but in the past 5 years i started watching a ton of football and playing fantasy. your videos are by FAR the best for breg down the mechanics of the game in laymens terms. thank you so much for your time and effort JT!
This is great information. I never really watched a full episode, but I'll be watching a lot more of these now. Very helpful for me as a Qb, and very helpful information I can also share with the other offensive skill players I know.
Thanks so much for breaking things down. I have (5) sons one playing in college and just got a bowl ring as a freshmen and he’s a quick guard. I always coached him so I made him my center to be my coach on the field but they kicked him to guard. Your videos are amazing and hope you don’t mind me sharing the hell out of them. Very useful and explained. Thank you. 👍💪 🏈
Nice video dude. I've just started watching American football and it really helps that your explanations don't have a lot of presumed knowledge. Super easy to follow, great vid.
Good stuff. I've picked up most of this after getting really interested in football schemes a year or two ago, but it's awesome to just have it laid out like this and definitely made a few things clearer. Would that you had existed back then!
Thanks a lot, that was hella informative. For someone who´s never played a snap but loves the game it really gave an in depth view without getting too crazy. Great job dude. Now a sub
I’ll be watching these videos before Madden season, loves these videos and can’t wait to see the next Xs and Ox vid that made me think to look for these playlists
First video and first time subscribing anything. This was amazing. As a receiver in my younger days, this would’ve been helpful because we are seeing the same coverages y’all are and most people don’t know how to help your QB beat them
Damn, that is THE Josh Rosen?! He is really smart. My wife, who is Jewish, a Kaplan, went to Cornell and then got her MBA from Wharton. Both schools are affiliated with Josh's ancestors. Unbelievable. I had no idea how complex football is. Amazing. I will need to watch this a few times. Thanks Josh! I am not worthy to watch but this only say the word, and I will watch it a few times.
Yes!!! Such a great backstory about that play to Roy Williams. Fantastic stuff. What about the play that haunts you the most? I'm sure that has an equally great backstory.
So glad to find your channel JT. Could you touch on some of the workouts you did to strengthen your throwing motion in the NFL? I've been hitting the gym a lot lately, but haven't developed a noticeable improvement in throwing distance.
I'm sure strength training can help with passing, but it's also really important to have sound technique (footwork, throwing motion, angles, etc.). I'd kind of argue that technique is more important, assuming you already have functional strength.
Hi JT. As a NFL fan from outside the USA, it's great to see this in depth breakdown. Really helps with the understanding of the nuances of the game. From the aspect of the QB. How hard is it changing schemes? Eg Moving to a different team in free agency or as the Patriots can do from week to week. Thanks
Derek even in a 3-4, by default one of the linebackers is going to pass rush to provide 4 man pressure. The overall basic scheme and shell of these coverages is still the same. If you want to rush three, you can, and then you can add a man into coverage anywhere you really want to. 3 man rushes usually give the qb enough time to read the field, unless he’s not expecting it. That’s where it’s good to mix in. You can 3 man stunt, or 3 man rush on a fake blitz. This video doesn’t get into blitzes or match zones. Coverages can get super complicated, but sometimes keepin it simple is the way to go.
What about how to attack some other odd defensive coverages in the pass game excluding cover 0 and 20. Can we look at how to attack a cover 6 and 8? Having some trouble with the differences and reads with those versus cover 2 and 4 for example.
Cover 6 is quarter quarter half. So one corner drops shallow the other corner backs up to quarters with a safety. The other safety has half the field. It’s used heavily vs trips. Cover 8 isn’t a coverage that is a define coverage. Coaches change up a coverage and call it cover 10 or what not for example. Your typical coverages are zero, 1, 2, 3, 4, and cover 6.
great vid JT! Can you go over the different variations of man coverages as well. What is the difference between 0, 1, and 2 man? Thanks for the awesome content. best football vids on the tube
Thank you for doing these videos, since you have experience in Foxborough (even if not that long) I have some questions about the offense. Can you give us an explanation of how their Erhardt-Perkins scheme works, what are the differences from other offensive schemes, what are its weak points (always generally speaking), and why Detroit, Tennessee and Buffalo have been so good at shutting it down in recent history? Thank you again, also if you need playbook references I've found the 2004 playbook online pretty easily although it's Charlie Weis' version of the offense and it's 15 years old.
Wow! This content is awesome! Now I know why I always get picked off by a linebacker(who seems to always leaps like a gazelle) in Madden when I change the WR route to a hook, because I see that deep CB in cover 4. That LB is just hoping he doesn’t drop the present I’m about to give him! 🤣
When watching film how do you determine if it’s quarters or 2 man? I get mixed up because the corners can basically play Press man and match vertical routes which looks like 2 man, I know the safeties would only drop to a 1/4 instead of a half but it’s hard to tell when watching films because of where the routes end up. Any tips for distinguishing that or for watching film in general?
Hi, i am so much happy about your Videos. I am a German and growing up with anything but football. So everything i know about football is either from Madden or RUclips. But one thing i always dont understand at all is the diffent schemes. Like what is the difference between vertical Power run and West coast zone run, what is the difference between 4-3 under and a 4-3 Base.. i would really need a basics video 😉
Man you can really break down the game! We've been working on some NFL Draft Scouting Reports for the top prospects in the 2021 NFL Draft. Would you be interesting in doing a video together?
Really nice of Josh Rosen to ask that first question. I hope he got the answers he was looking for.
Im frigging crying at this comment.
BRUH. I'm dead
🤣🤣🤣
This comment is legend status sir
that is golden!!
Can you please start a series of episodes like this that really goes in depth to each defensive scheme?
Yes! Offensive schemes too. The next vid should be Nickel vs Dime vs Quarter or 4-3 vs 3-4
Yes! Desperately thing to that sort of information.
"This could be a huge long series." H
They should make it one!

Brett Farve had a great breakdown about the nickel defense, it's on youtube, you'll be able to find it.

I loved calling smashes on Cover 2. The corner stays and protects the underneath hitch and the safety usually can’t get to the receiver running a corner in time.
And if they do then you just hit the seam
MaximusRex
Yup, usually the HB is running a streak (wheel) out of the backfield to draw the secondary towards the middle
Cover 2: Safeties invert and Corners take deep halves. Great way to jump the center/in routes and mix up the reads.
This really helps when I’m trying to make my football team as a QB. That was my main weakness
I had a vague sense of what zone coverages were before but this was such a good breakdown. The visuals were really helpful. There is often so much jargon thrown around in football analysis without explanation. Thanks!

Easily one of the best videos iv seen on zone coverage. Sheesh.

You’re welcome, Antonio.
These are all 4-3 Zones, kinda bugs me considering an extra linebacker in a zone coverage makes a huge deal.
Guess he stopped playing before Urlacher changed the Dynamics of the cover 2.
