I played the VR Nfl game they just put out, never having played football in an actual game as quarterback. Ended the game with 1 Rushing touchdown and 8 Interceptions. Thank you for the lesson coach.

Need more channels like yours JT so these casual fans can understand the game a little more. They make it seem easy to Coach from the stands but you and I know it is the exact opposite. So much goes into game planning that casual fans wouldn’t even begin to understand. They don’t even know that play calls are generally based on personnel and down & distance. 1st and 2nd down calls are completely different from 3rd down calls. But they just see a “bad call” and don’t know the rationale behind that specific call. Great channel! Keep up the good work.

I have two questions coming up:
1) How does down and distance affect the playcalling, as some of the passing concepts you have shown are more likely to be called on "less-pressure-downs" (1st&10, 2nd&5, 3rd&1...). But what do you like on 3rd and long, when you trail in the second half, on the road, you know the pass rush is coming and the secondary awaits your throw?
2) You see some 3rd string QB's being used in the Special Teams (e. g. Joe Webb, Taysom Hill). Do you see rather the advantages or disadvantages regarding the development of a QB coming out of that?
I personally have to admit that it would be so weird to see a QB in my kickoff team... (I play P/K in Germany)

Hey JT, great channel. I was wondering, what are some of the tricks defenses use to disguise coverage? As a QB, what do you look for to determine what the defense is doing pre-snap?
Dear Mr. Harris,
first i want to excuse me for my englisch, which is not my mother tongue. Now to your question, which is difficult to answer. Defenses use different kind of tricks, which basicly have in common, that they give you a look that differs from that, what they actually do. This could be that they give you an MOFO-look while actually playing MOFC on the play, but it could also be that the defense give you a pressure-look, but on the snap the defense only brings four (like in simulated pressures, which was used especially by mike zimmer). A defense could also look like it's mancouverage at the back end, while in fact it's playing zonecouverage and vice versa. To get a valid guess about what the defense will realy do after the snap, every kind of information is relevant. So keep in mind, which is down and distance and what are the oponents tendencies on this specific down and distance. Don't get fooled by, how many DBs are 8-12 yards deep, due to their is a chance that the defense will roll to another couverage after the snap than it looks like presnap. To not get fooled, look for leverage of the DBs especially from the cornerbacks (for example if there are 2 deep safeties and the CBs on the LOS but don't play with inside laverage, like they would probably do, if it would be 2-Man-Under, it is probably not 2-Man-Under but could be Cover 2, Cover 4, Cover 3 Buzz, Cover 1 Robber/Lurk/Thief). Also whatch out if the LBs step out of their normal allingement (for example if in the upper situation the LBs, probably some of them will be substituted for a fifth/sixth DB, are lined up nearer to the sidelines than they normaly would, if the defense would play cover 2, you could probably reduce the pool of posible couverages, so they will maybe play Cover 4 or Cover 3 Buzz or Cover 1 Robber/Lurk/Thief). if you now use presnap motion, you coul deduce if it's man or zone and so have a good gues what the defense will do. There are more things to whatch for. Regardless, i hope this helps. As an advice for the most time it'll help, if you don't make your mind up, based on what the defense is presenting you as an obvious look and you can recognize, that they will not do, what they show you, so you would be prepared, that you have to wait before throwing the ball.
Oh shoot, i was not 100 % concentrated. In the example above: if the LBs/Nickel/Dime are nearer to the sideline than they would be, if it would be Cover 2 for example, it's probably Cover 4. My bad

That’s a good question, I feel like it’s different for teams. I’ve heard Andrew Luck talk about spider 2 y banana and he had a low to high philosophy for the flood concept in the redzone. When I watch the Rams and when Goff rolls out I swear he looks at cooks and woods first when they do their flood concept, going high to low.

Hi JT, interesting breakdown, useful for an Australian coming from a mainly AFL background understanding the American game. I have a question about routes based on this and how you draw up plays on all your videos.
In the play designs you break down it seems like plays are always drawn up so that every receivers job is to get open, I was wondering in NFL receivers are ever ask for run dead routes where their job is to run a route designed to threaten an area of the field in order to force or hold defenders out of position so that other receivers can get open? This is a very common strategy in AFL, particularly when we have a forward that is dominant and likely to draw double teams.

In MS 1 read-pass or throw it away or run. In HS maybe 2 reads-pass, or throw it away or run.

I feel like I'm sort of catching how to read defenses pre snap, but I get really confused combining confirming the coverage post snap and going through progressions. I don't actually play QB or football in general, but I'm just a big fan of the game and want to gain a greater understanding.
Most NFL offenses now use motion to determine man vs zone pre-snap, then it's a question of watching for rotation of safeties and checking for blitzers as the QB makes his drop. A lot of reads also try to isolate one specific defender/zone vs two routes so they basically just read one defender and make a choice for 1 to 2, if the coverage is really good then check down to 3

The question that ive had for a while is what does it mean when a player is talking about the frontside/backside of the defense and my other question is how to use the routes against the frontside/backside of the defense
I understand that frontside/backside is more of an offense concept. The frontside is the directions of the play and the backside is away from it.

JT I am the Qb slash play caller for my 8 v 8. Team. What can I do To make my Offence more potent and get to scoring more points and really put my team over the top. I promised my Grandma A championship As she passed away And I want to delever and be the best Qb in the league I'm in. For middle field close does it matter how many linebackers they have stack because I see two linebackers and is the safety usually close in midfield he’s a little shy 8 yards from the linebacker but as long as every person on defense has a man from the offense basically can be a midfield close?

I watched Staubach, White, Aikman and Romo play. Haven't missed a game by any of them. Dak is NOT that guy. Everywhere I look it's all about the Dak contract. His biggest weakness is he doesn't process information fast enough. ie get through all 5 reads and make the right decision. Too many times he goes off his 1`st read. He repeatedly misses the big play down the field and his deep ball accuracy is very suspect. He only plays well when everything is perfect and was 1&5 against playoff caliber teams with a cast Romo dreamed of having. What too many Cowboys fans don't understand is:he is NOT 10 times better than Dalton. Football is a business. Andy is under contract. A huge Dak contract would put the Cowboys in cap hell for yrs. He is not Russel Wilson, He is not Aaron Rodgers, he is not Deshaun Watson, and he damn sure isn't Mahommes. What makes him think he should be the highest paid QB in the league? I would love to see a video comparing Dak to Andy on this channel. I honestly believe Dalton is a better fit in a McCarthy/Moore WCO and could have the best success of his career with the cast in Dallas.
