That missed kick eliminated the saints from playoff contention
The Jon Bois "Pretty Good" video on this is amazing.
That play sums up being a Saints fan. The XP didn't get blocked. He just flat out missed it. And that was when they were still kicking from the 2 yard line. If we win that game in OT. we're in the playoffs that year.

The NFL has done an incredible job of keeping alive games from years ago. Restoration and preserving old media is extremely difficult to do, but games from 50+ years ago can still be seen today in great condition. My dad and I enjoy watching games that he went to live, and that is done by the conservation efforts of NFL.
It is mostly because of the "NFL Films" organization.

That was FUXKING HILARIOUS!
It was the most Saints play ever.

As a saints fan this whole video hurt
The most amazing part about the Miracle at the Meadowlands' is having Merrill Reese narrating for all three of them! 1978 to still broadcasting today. What a legend!
The Miracle Trifecta at the Meadowlands?
There are 4 actually. Brian Westbrook did it in the early 2000s on a punt return also. Just not 0 time left.
The original MATM is the reason why today teams will get into the victory formation before snapping the ball which makes that play virtually impossible to duplicate.
@@STI2000 Not only that, but that play is why victory formation was even invented.
It's amazing that Merrill Reese was the radio commentator for the Miracle at the Meadowlands in 1978 and still holds that position in 2022. He is the voice of the Eagles.
Seeing all those plays in a row was amazing. Love the Eagles.
Wow, called both Super Bowls. He needs to be in the Eagles Hall of Fame when he does retire someday.

The guttural NO on that Saints missed FG after the insane last second touchdown is bliss.

It was the extra point actually. What's worse is that John Carney was one of the best kickers in football at the time and is in fact 5th on the career scoring list.

@@thelunatick1993 Huh? What are you whining about?
The immaculate reception is a perfect mix of quick thinking and luck. Rip Franco and fly high knowing you made the greatest play of all time
and possibly ref ball... but what would the NFL be without plays that ride the gray area fringe of their rulebook.
(For those who don't know at the time of this play if the ball ricochets off the steeler player and not the raider Franco can't legally catch the ball and advance it. for it to be a legal catch it needs to clearly hit the Raiders defender. Of course its also sick reflexes and awareness by Franco because if he dived to make that catch he'd also have been down by the rules of the time and also couldn't advance so his awareness here is incredible.)
@@rockstermaniac if you can't tell who it hit off 50 years later with several replay angles then they definitely couldn't tell live. @@WinByTKo Funny part is you don't even need that rule for that play, that was a forward pass lol
Unfortunately the NFL has changed the rules over the years so that play sadly can never happen again.
@@WinByTKo wait what?? i had no idea this was a rule
This really highlights the evolution of the kicking position. 47 yards was the longest of his career and thats barely a challenging kick nowdays.
For Scott Norwood? That was to be his longest on grass. Except for Miami, everyone in the AFC East was on turf and that was with 5 teams in the division. A lot more turf, and flat carpet turf, back then.
Soccer-style kickers increased accuracy, but moving the hashmarks in and creating rules that have made it almost impossible to block kicks has also given kickers less to think about=cooled, if not eliminated, pressure, and has driven percentages up, although, they've dropped in the last couple of pro football seasons. Increasing the height of the uprights has also helped expand the target for kickers, and made it much easier for officials to determine if a kick is good or no good. Beginning in the mid to late '60's the NFL also began putting two officials under the goalposts on FGs and PATS..
Better grass and no baseball dirt has also improved kicking surfaces, as have no-wind and no- elements domed/retractable roof stadiums..
Yep..
There is no comparison of the kickers of the past to now. You are exactly correct. Check out the 1979 Super Bowl PIT VS LA RAMS Matt Bahr kicks a 41 yard field goal in that game and it BARELY makes it over the crossbar.

I've always considered Desean Jackson's punt return touchdown the 4th Miracle at the Meadowlands. Brian Westbrook did the same back in 2003. I guess it's because it wasn't the last play of the game and the Eagles had to defend their lead for a minute, but to me at 7 years old, jumping up and down with buffalo sauce smeared on my face while my parents were screaming like they just hit the lottery, it sure felt like a miracle moment.
I was at a movie (agreed to go before the game was scheduled) with Merrill Reese in an earbud when BWest broke that return. I still remember fist pumping silently while Ben Stiller did something at a museum on screen.
That game was a turning point in our season, and that play was a godsend in a game where our offense was totally hapless, I 100% agree that that's a part of the miracle at the Meadowlands series.
@@ThatGreenGuy85 Even the few occasions when my Giants were really good, they had trouble beating the Eagles. Hope they beat the Colts coming up because if it comes down to having to beat Philly at the end of the season, Giants are not going to make the playoffs.
Agreed. Usually the Clyde Simmons one is regrettably forgotten, so I was excited to see it here. But surprised that Westbrook’s was then omitted. This is a truly great montage though.
Interesting about the Seahawks "Fail Mary" is that those were back-up referees since the main refs were on strike at that time. Lots of folks think maybe this oddball call helped drive up pressure for the league to make a deal because the normal refs were back pretty soon after.
You know…I just still don’t see how Seahawks even won that. I mean the DB had possession of it from the jump to the way down. Every questionable call the seahawks were involved with, it always went there way. It’s getting a little suspicious.
@@Cyberdalii, the correct call was made.
The fact that the Packer had the ball and wasn't juggling it with sole possession as he was going down, is irrelevant.
The catch is not completed until the player has completely gone to the ground with possession.
As it was, just before the time the defensive player who initially had a clean hold on the ball hit the ground and came to a stop, the SEAHAWKS receiver reached in and got his hands on the ball BEFORE the PACKER co-receiver hit the ground, --not landing on players who were on the ground under him or landing with two feet while his body was still moving to the ground, actually touching the ground in- bounds and coming to a stop either on his own or by being forced to by contact with a defender-- the Packer touching the ball was not fully stopped on the ground. Since the offense had full control of the ball last and both players, one on each side had control of the ball when the PACKER d-back hit the ground, dual possession goes to the team that last had full possession, that was SEATTLE just before the ball was grabbed in midair by GBAY..
If the PACKER had controlled the ball all the way to the ground before the Seahawk reached in, it would have been a pick.
Watch the replay, again.
It was a correct call, and after that official took abuse and was not retained once the regular officials came back, as some of the replacements were when hired as backups, he went into deep depression, had suicidal thoughts, etc.
The wrong description of that play has ruined his life.
That is a shame..he got the call right.
Why are lines drawn thru my relevant points, RUclips?

@@harrycooper5231, SEATTLE is a much bigger market than G.BAY..or even GB/MILW.
BUT..the rulebook was clear(its been changed somewhat since= no longer does a receiver have to establish that he is a receiver, then a runner, he can both= catch in one motion while moving the ball on a lunge, and its a catch as long as he has control while opposition contact is made as he is lunging forward while going to the ground= DEZ BRYANT RULE..

12:51 My Dad was in London on business for that Super Bowl. When he called home a few days later I described the game and that play... and he said that the only SB photo in the London papers was of that final stretch.
22:50 First Super Bowl I remember watching. I was in daycare at the time and, even though we were in Minnesota they served us blue and green jello shaped like football helmets. No idea why.
24:50 That was an evening game and I had to go to bed before the end of it. Mom had to break it to me the next morning.
Yeah, the packers guy definitely catches the ball, the seahawks guy only has the packers guy's arm. I don't know what the refs were thinking.
@@yaldabaoth2 If both players catch the ball, they give it too the offense by rule, i guess the ref thought they both caught it and gave it to Seattle even though it was clearly caught by the Packers
Need to look at all the angles. There was a great picture in the Seattle papers the next day, taken from behind the end zone, showing the Seahawk’s receivers left hand firmly clutching the ball, between the ball and the defender’s chest. He had possession with that hand and never let go. Simultaneous catch goes to the offense.
Was it from a camera that was available to the refs?
Don’t forget the refs decided not to call Tate pushing Sam Shields (Packers CB) causing Offensive PI. That game sent the NFL into uproar, and they admitted it was an interception, giving GB the very elated win
If a different crew besides Joe Buck and Troy Aikman had been on the call of Derrick Henry's 99 touchdown run it might have had a nickname too.
During the third Miracle at the Meadowlands, you can see the Giants coach furiously throwing his play sheets to the ground as Jackson runs on by.
9:50 is the most heartfelt NO I have ever heard. Lmao.
😂
no voice actor can match that😭
Haha

One of the plays missed that I will always remember is "The Immaculate Deflection" or "The Tip" when Richard Sherman tipped a pass to Malcolm Smith for a game sealing touchdown that sent the Hawks to the Super Bowl
YES
The announcer screaming about Karneys missed extra point had to have had money in that game lol
I would love to see a video explaining the success of all NFL teams that received a nickname and why they received their nickname/ what made them so good. For example the Steel Curtain and the Legion of Boom.
💯
💯
the double doink was actually tipped by somebody as it was kicked. definitely could have been a reason it doinkied but the double doink is absolutely wild. he went on to doink like 3 more kicks lol
Looking back at "The Fail Mary" Jennings 100% caught that ball, he easily had possention on said ball
You're absolutely right. I'll add -- and I say this as a Steelers fan, so I'm not about to give the Raiders anything -- the Raiders got screwed by that tuck rule call. Brady had totally brought the ball back after a pump fake.
@@BeazerProductions Also a steelers fan, and the duo of Brady and Belechek got away with so much stuff that wouldn't fly in the rest of the league
@@johnpeterson462 Yet he still had your teams number 12 out of 16 times he played you.
It was at the very least a clear simultaneous catch, which goes to the offense. Got that call right. Clear missed OPI though which you don't see in the video
@@BHox01nah Jennings had full possession, just because you have a hand on the ball doesn’t mean you also caught it
That Fail Mary still hurts as a Packers fan, Jennings had that damn ball!

The day I learned to HATE Pete Carroll.
But... then he gets to Super Bowl XLIX and makes "the worst play-call in NFL history."
I feel like Darth Vader in Episode IV when he strangles the admiral using the Force.. "Your apology is accepted."
Atleast it got the real refs back after that. That contract was pretty quick after
ive never seen that play before that was the most horseshit call ive ever seen
Plus the Seattle receiver committed offensive pass interference with two handed push off.
The River City Relay somehow managed to be one of the most triumphant and one of the saddest moments in Saints history. How could he do that, indeed?
Yeah, that tracks for the Saints. Can't win for losing.
The thing I love about the Murray Mary is that Fitzegerald was the first one to reach D.Hopkins to congratulate him, what an absolute unit.
Not even a niners fan but catches 2 and 3 had a lot of meaning to it. Before TO was TO he had like 2 3 drops that game before the winning catch. And Vernon Davis’s last coach didnt believe in him before that season. So it was awesome to see them overcome adversity within themselves
You are wrong to say that Mike Singletary didn’t believe in Vernon Davis. Davis himself credits Singletary’s rant as the moment that changed everything for him
@@Joe-zq4ex facts
True but it doesn't compare to the original after numerous tough losses to the Cowboys in the past they finally beat them when it mattered the 49ers would go on to win their first superbowl after that magical play
@@kurtpunchesthings2411 oh i see
After the saints get a miracle TD, the kicker misses the kick and that announcer who screams NOOOOOOO .....That was his bank account going to zero!
😂
I feel like Kyler gets so much credit for The Hail Murray. He did a great job getting out of pressure and making that heave but Hopkins made that play what it was. Four defenders and he caught that over all of them. DHop deserves more credit for that one. Call it the the “Hop Mary” lol
I always felt that the QB gets too much credit for successful Hail Marys. The QB is tossing it up there hoping for a miracle. The receiver really is the one who’s making the play happen being able to come down with an “anyone’s ball” kind of catch.
@@chitalian22true but the QB does deserve credit. Murray threw a perfect ball on the run. Same with Rodgers on his two Hail Mary’s. Two unbelievably perfect throws.
I’ll remember the Minneapolis miracle for the rest of my life. Goosebumps every time I watch it. Sad what happened the game after though, we won’t talk about that
Crazy how the Vikings are featured in like half of the plays in this viceo
I still don't understand why we changed quarterbacks after the season was over. I'm sure we wouldn't have done any better with Keenum, but we should have given him a chance.
man i remember that play lol i went to sleep early didn't watch the game wake up next day didn't know who won watching highlights see the play happen and the field position of the defender before the ball lands and say ah cool Saints win it then ....... what i call the worst tackling attempt in NFL History that shit happens and I'm like WHAT THE WHAT
even i could have made a better tackle then that holy fuck
The Philly flop 38-7 😂😂
@@squirrelydan3 because we traded a 1st round pick for Bradford, and you can't afford that on the bench. Plus Keenum got paid handsomely to fight for a starting job in Denver. Even if we wanted him to stay, he wouldn't start or get paid like he did.
Thank nfl throwback for digging up all these videos and putting them together for us to enjoy
Thank you, NFL Throwback! This is one of the greatest videos ever put together. I can't even imagine the time it took to collect every single one of these individual videos and put them all together into one beautiful video. The memories of them all is almost overwhelming.
Man....I still get goosebumps when I watch the Music City Miracle. I remember it like it was yesterday when Mike Keith yelled "There are NO FLAGS ON THE FIELD". I had a feeling something big was going to happen.....and it definitely did. But I had to laugh when they showed the one yard short right after 😅
And in between those games, the Titans came to Indy and ran up and down the field against my Colts!! Funny that instant replay was put back in that year so they could actually review the lateral and see it was correct
Yea i used to think it was a forward pass til i looked where the ball was instead of the player, where the ball is is what counts and it went back about 2 inches...it was indeed a lateral
How can it possibly be 25 years since the Music City Miracle?
Man, I know why Joe Buck gets some heat for how he calls games sometimes, but you CAN'T ARGUE how PERFECT he was on the Minneapolis Miracle
Exactly. I hate the way he calls the games, but that was (alongside the Vikings Radio Broadcast) beautifully called because they let their emotions and disbelief out
@@BlackDawn626 The best thing about that miracle is the fact that they needed a miracle just so that they could go get slaughtered the next week. Pathetic.
yeah, Joe Buck sucks
Imagine if he was awake for more of his games like he was for that one. He'd actually be pretty good at his job.

I thought that Steve Young's run against the Vikings was known as "The Scramble" but I must be mistaken. Thanks for this video, many fantastic plays here - as well as a few infamous ones. RIP Franco Harris.
i remember that one - it was incredible
I remember watching the play when the LT of the Seahawks recovered a fumble down by the opposite goal line and started to run it in, halfway up the field he tried to hand it off, but his whole team was telling him to keep going, that was his touchdown!
I was also there for the Beast Quake... the whole stadoum was vibrating!!!
even seeing the small clip of the double doink really hurt my chicago heart
08:29 I clearly remember that FG attempt.
That was the beginning of the term "Icing" created by Bill Parcells.
Right before that kick, he called time out to stress the hell out of the kicker, and it worked.
Then began the term "icing".
The announcer calling out Gronk before the play. Brutal.
Was there live betting back then? Coulda been a millionaire
Foles calling his own number is crazy. Love that.
01) The guy Marcus Williams hit on his tackle attempt was the one teammate who had a shot at Diggs
02) Jacoby definitely has some moves to go with his wheels as Super Bowl 47's second-half kickoff return can attest
03) Tipped in traffic and the Vikings running back (judging by the jersey number) is the one who came down with the ball
04) Both laterals were legal, Gronk had a bad position, and 62 (a lineman) is who ultimately sprang Drake free
05) Rodgers would subsequently strike again to Jeff Janis against Arizona only for Larry Fitzgerald to put the birds on his back in overtime
06) Pearson got away with PI
07) Murray strikes to former Texan wideout Hopkins, who snares the ball amidst three Buffalo defenders
08) The play that brought back the regular referees, as 26 went touchdown while 84 went 'no time' and Tate got away with PI
09) New England would strike again immediately after on the subsequent kickoff thanks to another fumble
10) Blocked by the lineman's buttowski
11) Uh, Jim, wrong way...
12) Uh, Dan, back of the end zone...
13) Man, Cody's good at finding the uprights themselves instead of the open air between them

29) Indy wasn't ready for an onside kick attempt
30) Chaos allows Dave Casper to score
31) Lateral picked off by a former Patriot who quickly gets QB Mac Jones (the only player who could stop him) out of the way
32) Mitchell did get enough forward progress to get the first down before a Packers defender bumped him
33) NaVorro Bowman gonna take the Niners to the playoffs!
34) Fake blitz equals a 14-point swing in favor of Pittsburgh

37) Twelve extra yards as Marshawn does it again
38) The receiver nabs it amidst two defenders
39) Freeman's shoulder draws out a big 'He did WHAT?!' from Al Michaels on commentary
40) Dave Casper hauls in a deep ball before scoring on the other side
41) Three fish and it's the Raider who hauls it in
42) Eli dodges a sack, Tyree uses his helmet to assist, and Plaxico Burress gives the Giants the lead that blocks New England's 19-0 bid
43) Joe gets Too Tall to jump too soon before finding Dwight Clark
44) TO redeems himself after a bad day by hauling in the critical score
45) Vernon Davis triggers San Fran's third critical score on 3rd and 3
46) 31 of Oakland and Fuqua of Pittsburgh collide as the ball reaches them, with Franco Harris in the right place at the right time to make the catch that wins it for the Steelers

The pick at the Stick always makes me cry. The last game at Candlestick. Was it a shitty stadium? Yeah, but going to games there was special, and now it's just a hole in the ground. What a moment.
I'm an Eagles fan so I'm obviously partial to the Philly Special, but the ballsiest call in NFL history is definitely the Saints' onside kick in the Super Bowl vs the Colts, although I don't recall ever hearing that play referred to as "Ambush"
Yeah, no one has ever called it that. “The Onside Kick,” or “The Surprise Onside Kick” would’ve made a lot more sense.
In the "America's Game" documentary about the 2009 Saints, Sean Payton talks about how his team was gonna run that play and he was the one who codenamed it "Ambush"
9:48 nooooo!!!! was the best part of all these plays lmao
@18:57 Nothing out shines the Holy Roller and the call on the play has to be the #1 announcer call in NFL history. And throw in the Chicken for good measure. He was absolute hilarious.
I remember watching that Seattle vs green Bay game. Jennings definitely had that pick. He had the most control of the ball and even pulled the ball to his chest when going to, and, on the ground.
Yea, that call was bs by the refs
Tate caught it
@@Cruz474NO he didn't and he later admitted he didn't. Jennings clearly had it first with both feet down. IN fact, several of the real refs commented that it was a touchback. The fact that the NFL refused to support the TD call says it all
@@chriskay1449That was a scab referee game, wasn't it?
@@tomshea8382Yes and it was the last scab referee game as the NFL suddenly made a deal with the refs union after weeks of no progress. It was hilarious how fast the NFL was trying to move on from that game The fact that the NFL refused to back the call tells you that the call was wrong.
As a lifelong Eagles fan, I never knew there were 3 "Miracle at the Meadowlands" I thought Jackson's punt return was number 2. So did Mike Quick when he was calling the play right here @ 15:04. Except it was edited for this video, He actually said "This is the Miracle at the Meadowlands number two".
What I like about the second one is that it's the kicker and holder that are the only two lead blockers for that TD. Heads up play by them to immediately take off after the block.
As a Giants fan, I remembered two. Which is enough. (Dear lord, your guys just own mine, don't they?)
They forgot Brian Westbrook’s punt return, too
2 that I know of that are missing - "The Tackle" Big Ben saving the AFC division Championship game in 2005 and "The Immaculate Extension" The Antonio Brown Extension over the goal line to win the Christmas Day game in 2016 over the Ravens
4:52 I'll call it touchception. this was during the officials strike that they brought some people without NFL experience officiating.
Rip to Franco Harris he changed football and may he rest in peace
4:50 I've also heard that called The Immaculate Deception. I also like to say the Packers were Swindled In Seattle.
"The Catch II" should also be called "Screwed in San Francisco" as Jerry Rice clearly fumbled the play before. It's the play the NFL wants you to forget and it lead to the implementation of instant replay the next season.
As a NYG Fan, from 1982, when I got home from the Navy, until I die, I've had it pretty good. We went to 5 SB's and won four. Three of them went down to the last play. Helmet catch is still a hilarious moment in our family's history. The rest of the family still jokes about how nuts I was. Never gets old.
The fact that there's 3 Miracles at the Meadowlands is hilarious tho
I never noticed gronkowski was even there until right now My mind this whole time thought this play was a pick returned for a touchdown
That Marshawn Lynch run was incredible
Beast Quake 2 was actually as incredible.
When I see Lynch making these incredible plays it causes me until my dying day, to question passing the ball at the goal line in the Super Bowl against New England.
Very classy move putting the Immaculate Reception at the end......very fitting ending to a very good video! I'm 57 years old and have witnessed every one of them live on tv! Thank you!!
You must watch a lot of NFL if you've seen them all on Live TV. Cheers! 🙂
Not the ones from the 50s and 60s, and you would have been 7 yrs old for the Immaculate Reception, so I doubt you would have recognized the significance of the play. I was 12 yrs old for the Bears 1985 Super Bowl run, and I love football. The most significant thing that stood out to me was the Super Bowl Shuffle, Jim McMahon, William Perry, and Walter Payton. The Patriots were not "THE PATRIOTS" yet when they lost, and I didn't start really paying attention to really great plays until I was older. I knew the game and knew the players, but do you really remember every single named play you saw live as a kid? I barely remember the ones I saw as an adult, and I forget nothing. I remember Favre doinkiing the ball to himself. I thought the "dead" ball being run in for a TD was a fever dream until I started watching these clips and finally saw a Boykin highlight. Unless you own a Delorean, you didn't see all of these live on television. If you're like me, and you watch a lot of football, you probably saw the majority of them from 1972 (when you would be 7) onward, and the meaningful ones would be from about 1982 (when you were 17) onward. Mainly because we are busy doing kid things, and not focused on watching football during our childhood. Obviously, I am 7 yrs younger, but same concept. It's not something we pay as much attention to, or appreciate until we're older. No need to exaggerate. You could have just said you remember watching the majority of these live on tv. Lots of people did. Some are even old enough to have actually seen all of them live on tv. Also, some games aren't shown on tv in certain areas, so before you were able to pay to view a game, you were SOL if you lived in a certain state, but wanted to watch the Giants game, for example. You were able to watch every game, for every division, every single Sunday when no one else could? Even in the 70s, 80s, and 90s? Yes, I am writing a whole @ss paragraph in response to your bs throwaway line, because bs shouldn't go unchallenged.
*80 yr old who really did watch it all live nods sagely, and says someday this one will learn to let the little things go*
@@jenx5870 I’m sorry you think kids watching football is outlandish
