    Thanks for watching! We really didn’t have long to produce this video and the render took over 6 hours!! We noticed 3 graphical glitches at 1:54 - 2:03 and 2:24 - 2:27. And we didn’t have time to rerender so unfortunately they have to stay in this final video. Sorry if it's distracting, and thanks for watching! Jake

      @@theautomationchannel6920 just take out some contrast? The would defeat the purpose of an accurate test. He set up a shot. Both cameras equal they should have equal tones. A7IV is darker every time, you probably prefer A7IV style buts not accurate to how he has the scene set up.

    It would be interesting for you to dig into the crop mode more. That should help the rolling shutter if it was an issue. Seeing the tradeoff in noise and sharpness would be of interest. A lot of us have crop lenses and this might make a nice step up if the crop performance is decent.

  • @spec-productions5733
    @spec-productions5733 2 года назад +2

    At 4:54 you said you changed the lighting to compensate... I'm not clear if that's why there's a difference in contrast, or the way the sensors are rendering. The luminance still looks different. You could have used the ISO setting to change and report the difference. Anyway, thanks for providing this comparison. I do like the colors better on the IV (personal pref of course), but seeing them at the same brightness (even matching with the histogram) would have been helpful.

    I hate to say it - but it seems to me that Sony engineered this camera to purposefully under perform in certain areas so as not to canibalize their A7S3 and other models.

      Shame !!

    • @bananasandbass
      @bananasandbass 2 года назад +7

      Actually no. It’s mainly the choice of 33mp sensor that hampers the video capabilities. It’s why it has to crop to achieve 50/60fps in 4K.
      One of the reasons the A7SIII has 12MP is not only the light sensitivity, but also the readout speed for better rolling shutter and more easy high framerate processing. Hence it can do 4K 50/60fps easy. And 4K 100/120fps with only a slight 10% crop.
      I wish Sony had kept 24MP for the A7IV but maybe a new sensor and using this Xmor R processor (Same as A1 and A7IV) but just keep the resolution normal so the 4K 50/60fps would be possible without a crop.
      But clearly they had to cater to mostly the photography consumers here and make the camera lean a bit more to the photo side of the market. As any serious videographer would already be inclined to get the A7SIII anyway.

    • @tennissir1986
      @tennissir1986 2 года назад

      @@bananasandbass I’d have to disagree. Since the A1 has a higher MP count and and the A74 shares the same processor and the A1 sensor and was developed Before the A74 - they had the technology to give the lower MP A74 sensor the same faster readout. Companies do these kinds of “dummying up” their products all the time so as not to canabalize their other products.

    • @bananasandbass
      @bananasandbass 2 года назад +5

      @@tennissir1986 One important detail explains the difference. The A1 has a stacked sensor. A kind of RAM is integrated on that chip (similar to A9). Which is the fundamental first step in a fast image process pipeline. The A7IV doesn’t have that, it “only” has the image processor.
      I would have liked them to keep the 24MP but make it a faster sensor and add that Xmor R processing after that. But that would also make it a more expensive camera. Which is not what this base model FF mirrorless is about.

    This is a very well detailed comparison. Thanks for sharing this! I have been wondering the comparisons between the A7sIII and the A7 IV, and this video answered a lot of questions for me. One thing I was definitely taken a back by was the color between the A7sIII and A7 IV. You didn't mention what color profile and LUT you used during the ISO and Noise comparisons, but the colors seemed quite different. Were they both using Slog3 and a Rec 709 LUT?

  • @zagorcuk1966
    @zagorcuk1966 2 года назад

    Happy to see this review, very different from others that are not from a pro video/film perspective. The differences in tonality with the A7S3 / FX3 you show are an eye opener. Combined with the rolling shutter and the lack of real slow-motion, the FX3 is still the bare minimum to make serious film content. I really hope the new features like "focus breathing compensation" and skin tone choices make it to the FX3 / A7S3 with a firmware.

  • @timpolster
    @timpolster 2 года назад +1

    Thanks for the great overview. You guys do a wonderful job. The detail difference between the R6 and the A7IV was quite stark when you had both on the screen with the color charts up. Almost to the point that the Sony would need to have some detail dialed back for shooting people. With the stronger codec options, color differences seem to be less important these days as they can be altered in post. This camera looks like a great tool in the end that will not lead any spec categories but be very useful.

      The letdown by α7 IV's _uncompressed_ raw burst [1], confirmed 6 fps [2], is overblown [3]. But compressed raw's 10 fps, oversold, is potential of drive mode Hi+, whereby the viewfinder hides the present scene and shows the prior shot [2,4]. The fastest viewing live is Hi, up to 8 fps [2]. That's all done, if at poorer autofocus, by α7 III [5].
      Yet an α7 IV for raw 10 fps-useful on noncritical action [2], like a subject staying on axis or predictable [4]-might cost 2900 USD. Writing to SD card, Gordon Laing's preproduction unit did 10 fps JPEG, but 8 fps raw plus JPEG, and 8 fps raw alone [2]. Raw 10 fps, alone or plus JPEG, was to CFexpress type A card [2]. Capacity 160 GB costs 400 USD.
      Sony's quiet shutters, new in 2015's 42MP α7R II, quelling camera shake, aid resolution, but 24MP α7 III's loud clunks, like DSLR mirror shock, seemingly return for α7 IV's 38% more pixels. The α7 IV's 33 MP are some 65% beyond its mirrorless rival, Canon R6-solid 12 fps raw [1]-and 2020's flagship DSLRs, Canon 1DX III and Nikon D6, all some 20 MP.
      Even 33% beyond 20 is 26.5 or 10% beyond α7 III's 24 MP. Or reuse α7R III shutter and α7 III sensor-20% beyond 20 MP-as new processing works color and ISO. Let live view be 10 fps, 25% beyond 8 fps. Let motion warp fall. Let 4K60 be fullframe. The new bias-leeway for crude shutter, then much crop in post-, _then_ print several feet wide-is gimmicky.

With the A7IV, can I do the same setting from Full HDMI to Full HDMI to my 4K Elgato Capture card. I know A7IV can use USB C for streaming but the 4K only 15p, not really, it would be a lot of chopping in the video. The A7IV looks much more realistic to me, whereas the A7SIII looks sort of oddly low contrast and tinged with magenta. Of course it's only a few shots so I'm not drawing any conclusions. Hi, thanks to share your interesting video. I'd like to ask a question please: I make only documentaries in 4K around the world, I don't take Pics. I take interest about a good image quality of the video. Do you suggest this Sony A7 IV camera for 4K videos? Thanks you.

      Hello, what’s your budget? Have you got
      E mount lenses already? If you strictly just shoot video there are better options in this price range. This camera is aimed more as a hybrid with a slight lean towards photo performance. Jake

      @@CVPTV I thank you a lot for your suggestions. My budget is around the same of Sony A7 IV. but if it is a bit less it is better. I have to buy both, the camera and its lens but in kit (with zoom) because they cost less. What camera do you suggest for my 4K documentaries? I always reach remote areas of Africa and South Ameria to shoot the daily life of the indigenous peoples. I remind you I don't take pics and I inform you I only shoot handheld footage and I rarely use the tripod.

    Thanks for the review! At least someone showed a comparison at super high ISO's.
    I wish you had explored and talked more about the crop mode in comparison to the FF mode.
    Do you remember if ISO 25600 is much worse on the crop mode?
    I would like to capture "nature stuff" and many times that would be at low light. At macro levels you'd want details while keeping a reasonable DoF (small apertures).
    Also I hope that Sony didn't get rid of the "Clear Image Zoom" in these modern cameras. I love that feature in my A7r II.

    There's some confusion in the video, the author doesn't understand what "dual gain" is and thinks it's just "noise reduction", but actually it's something else entirely.
    Also the author doesn't understand why there is more detail and better noise in the A7iv, and again attributes the better noise to "noise reduction", but actually this simply because of the higher resolution sensor.

    • @CVPTV
      @CVPTV  2 года назад

      Sorry but this sensor isn’t officially dual native iso, you can see obvious signs of noise reduction on the port capped footage. If it was a proper dual native iso sensor, Sony would be stating it as they do with their cameras that do have it, ie fx9, VENICE, etc. I can assure you I am not confused by either of the subjects you have mentioned. Can you please explain your 2nd point as it’s pretty, confusing?

      @@CVPTV He's referring to scaling down the image (7K down to 4K), which also scales down the noise. Many have discussed this as a benefit by potentially making the images look cleaner and sharper... and that is somewhat evident in your controlled test (sharper in this case), though not withstanding the color shift. Not my words, but those of Northrup, Cine-D, among others.

    According to Gerald Undone and his tests on the Xyla 21 the dynamic range is actually a 3rd stop better than the a7siii due to the better noise performance as a result of the high mp downsampling, similar to the a1. The colours in your outdoor tests to me looked better on the a7iV as well.

      Not sure what to tell you. Our methodology behind the tests was as follows.
      Both cameras set to SLOG3 SGAMUT3.CINE.
      Both cameras set to 4K 25, a7 III XAVC-S a7IV XAVC S-I at max data rates.
      Both cameras custom white balanced using a grey card.
      We then lit ISO 800 on the a7 IV with the aperture around T2.
      Using 41% +/- 1 Zebras, making sure our mid grey chip on the Macbeth chart was showing the Zebra.
      As we went up in ISO we stopped down the lens.
      We then did the same for the a7III adjusting T stop slightly to compensate the difference in exposure we were seeing at the exact same settings as a7 IV on the a7 III.
      Jason doesn't explain any of the methodology behind his test and even says it isn't perfect.
      I don't believe we mention the resolving difference between the a7 III and the 4 in this video do we, so how does it conflict with what Gordon is saying? Jake

    I didn’t understand the part with the charts and the latitude test. Why did the two cameras expose so differently on the same scene even with adjusted lighting? It’s even on the same log gamma curve no?
    Also did Sony cripple the a7iv somehow with worse color science as well?
    They definitely did not do its rolling shutter justice though, that is some 2013 consumer DSLR video jello effect I see.

    • @JonPais
      @JonPais 2 года назад +1

      Not sure if you understand what the word cripple means. It's pretty evident you don't. a7 IV footage can be easily intercut with footage from the a7s III. 30ms rolling shutter on the Panny S1H circa 2019 and not downsampled from 7K either, so not 2013. 20ms on the s35 sensor of the Pocket 6K, which is nothing to write home about either. 30ms on the Canon R5, circa 2020. You're not funny, maybe choose another career.

    • @vidthreenorth4007
      @vidthreenorth4007 2 года назад

      On the one hand, I agree, but I think I understand what is going on. Contrast is always adjustable for every Picture Profile, and all the other preset system that Sony provides (I don't know why the include so many overlapping preset systems), so you should be able to match them for most situations if you want to do so. Sony seems to treat the default contrast as relative to the particular sensor in each of their cameras. Slog2 from my a6400 is not going to look like Slot2 from this a7iv, nor like the older a7iii. But if I want to, I can equalize them all to output about the same within limits. Compare that to Panasonic who created VLog-L for the GH5 which has the same slope as VLog, except that it clips early in the highlights instead. Is that better? I don't know. I understand the difference, but at this point, I can't say I have a preference.
