Quick question... according to sensor light, would the sigma 18-50 2.8 in apsc mode on the a7iv at 18mm have the same amount of sensor light as a full frame version 16-55 2.8 in 27mm on the a7iv in full frame? Like, will the 2.8 amount of light hitting the sensor be the same?

I believe the crop in 4K/60 is because the sensor read out speed, at this price point, is too slow to read the entire space of the sensor for 60FPS. This is where of a lot of the added cost of the 7SIII/FX3/A1 comes from, the higher read speed sensor. This is also why the rolling shutter is an issue with this camera and not so much on the higher end bodies. This concept is the same for distorted silent shooting for fast moving subjects. By the time the sensor reads from top to bottom, the subject has moved in the frame.
I think one point that reinforces it is that the R6 has similar issues and the S5 is much better but not perfect. I believe the Z5 is similar but I'm not sure

I am surprised that you missed the most important improvement, that of video focusing and tracking. The A7 IV is ahead of the A7c who is ahead of the A7iii. The user's control of how fast it tracks moving objects and people and how sticky you can make it, is the main reason most people are upgrading. And this is an area that demand fast processors (Like the A1). THAT is where the processing power went in case you still wonder :)
This was a followup video as I mentioned. I talked about AF in the first video and no one asked any questions about it so it didn't make it into this one. You're right though... the AF is great!
I have an a6400 and find that I am missing some shots by using non-stabilized lenses (tamron 11-20 f2.8 and Sony 16-55 f2.8). My question is about selling this gear and upgrading to a body with IBIS. I really only shoot photos so am not concerned with video features. With the Sony a7iv being out, it seems like there are some great deals to be had on used versions of the a7iii so I was wondering if a used a7iii would be the best way to jump up to full frame, or if the a7iv is worth the extra money. I've seen really clean a7iii bodies going for around $2000 CAD which is a massive savings over the a7iv when you factor in taxes. Thanks for all the awesome videos!
I think that anything you use will be an upgrade over the 6400 when it comes to moving up to full frame the a7iii takes insane photos, the a7riii also takes insane photos and it has that 40 something megapixel sensor which is wild and also puts it in about the same photo range as the new a7iv with its 33 mp sensor so if you’re trying to get close to the a7iv get the a7riii it’s around 2400 used RN at least that’s what the one I saw today at Best Buy was selling for
Hey, I'm a new-ish follower and fan of your stuff. I really appreciate this video and production that went into it. I've pre-ordered an A7IV and can't wait to start shooting with it. One small suggestion that I would have with regards to how this video was edited would be to introduce the different topics with the video "card" before you verbally say it. Right now, you have it backwards (you say what the next thing you're talking about is going to be, then you flash the card), but that basically adds nothing since what you say is usually more detailed than what the card has written on it. For example, at 6:18 you discuss video and skin tones. Your card reads very simply, "Video & Skin Tones." That is a great way to introduce the subject and prepare the viewer. Your verbal explanation of, "definitely a big question that some people wanted answered was the video quality, and specifically the skin tones verses the A7S III" would then fit in much better after the card since it is an expanded version of what the card has already stated / introduced and also fits in better after the audio cue you've employed. I hope that makes sense. (As an aside, this would also let you put the card right at the beginning of the chapter markers, if you were so inclined.) Keep up the great work, man! EDIT: A much more clear example is in the Crop Lenses section at 10:32. It's a bit redundant to use the card so long after you've introduced the subject.
I have a question, could you make a beat using sony shutter sounds? I feel like you could hearing the tone/pitch differences between the different models now.
I shoot still photos, and I'm happy with my a7iii, but I am eager to upgrade to the a7iv. I mostly want it for the slightly better ergonomics, better I/O covers, and AF improvements. Oh, and higher rez sensor is just a nice bonus.
Such a solid video man. Great questions and great insight into this upcoming camera. Helped validate my pre-order of the camera. I feel it will be a huge upgrade from my A7III especially for lapses.
Weather sealing doesn’t mean you can submerge the camera under water or shoot with in the rain 🙄in either case you should have protective gear for the device. Weather sealing means that in high conditions of dust, rain, freezing temperatures, and moisture the camera is sealed enough that it can withstand and not be effected so easily. Water resistance means the camera can endure a splash or two and they mean water coming from above mostly rain. But you should use an umbrella and protect it as much as possible. That’s it. Also weather proofing doesn’t prevent condensation. The canons D lines are weather proof their thick heavy bodies are reliable. I would find it hard to believe the Sony match up to them but we shall see. I’ve had my mk ii for 8 years snd it works. Let’s see how long my Sony will last in weathered conditions.
Excellent video! I’m upgrading to this from an a7iii. I also have an a7siii so the a7iv will be an excellent b cam for video since now it has the same codecs as the a7siii, and for photos I’m really looking forward to the 4D tracking focus and higher MP.
Here as I’m ready to upgrade from my a7c, would love to jump to the fx3 but is just out of budget right now, mainly because with a7IV I can sell my a7c, I feel like I would have to keep the a7c for casual (personal) shooting and photos. The a7IV gets me into 10-bit, active stabilization and better low-light which are the primary areas I’m looking to improve by upgrading
Here is why I think that the A7IV is better than the competition (in my opinion). Canon R6 -No crop in 4k but overheats. It means that you are going to film in 4k more often on the A7IV. -The RF lenses are really expensive. You can buy EF lenses to adapt them but the autofocus won't be as good as with RF ones. -It only has 20mpx (which is not really an issue) -There is still the 30 minutes record limit. Nikon Z6II -Films in 4k60 with a 1.5x crop just like the A7IV. -Same as the Canon, there is no much lens choices here. On the contrary there are a lot of amazing third party lenses for Sony E-Mount. So again it's my opinion, it will depend on what you are going to do with the camera. I personnally shoot videos and photos. (I am going to upgrade from a GH5).
What actually is 10 bit? Is it set it and forget it? Or does it require extra editing? Kind of like the iPhone has the ultra high dynamic range or whatever they call it where it changes the image totally blown out until you fix it. In the editing.
What camera did you use to record your sit down part of this video ? I am looking to invest into a camera and lens for beauty videos and photography’s. Just a camera that will make my videos look high end and I don’t know what I should get.
I was using the Sony FX3 for that part. That’s my typical A-camera. That being said, there’s a lot of the look that comes from the lens choice, lighting and color grading too. It’s not necessarily that it comes out of the camera looking like that.
How quickly does it switch between photos and video? I am a hybrid shooter for weddings. I need to be able to switch quickly between photos and video throughout the day. The a7iii is slow in this regard, especially if there’s anything in the buffer after firing off multiple photos. The Nikon z6ii almost instantly switches back and forth with no issue, but I want to stick with Sony if possible.
Yeah, the experience of using the camera is better for sure… but the experience of using the a7iii isn’t bad by any means. It’s like comparing two fast, fancy cars… sure, one is probably better than the other, but they’re both better than my Kia.
@@dunnadidit yeah there are certainly differences, just not enough to spend my money on. If it had 4k 120 with a crop I think that would be a bigger deal. I don't use 60p for anything haha but thanks for the review I appreciate the insight. That money can goto upgrading my 24-70 to the sigma or new Samyang which will be a much bigger improvement.
As a photographer I use the EVF almost all the time. a7iv have a better EVF than a7iii, maybe it don't make a huge difference. a7c have a terrible EVF.
just discovered your channel great video , i shoot tons of action, dance , mma , and my biggest gripe with the a7iii was a lag from the view finder , do you notice any lag with the new one ?
I didn’t notice personally but I didn’t shoot a whole lot of fast paced stuff where you would really notice it either. Sorry I know that’s not much help!
@@dunnadidit for sure just for me to catch a dancer a foot being not straight makes a difference in a usable shot and the lag sometimes i will miss that peak moment .
A crucial difference I see in your landscape images is to be found in the dynamic range. When looking at rocks, cliffs, trees, it's obvious : the amount of definition in the darker areas is huge compared with the Alpha 7M3. When it shows a dark stripe of tree apexes, the AM4 show each apex in detail. And it just is similar with the rock-walls and cliffs : so much more to see there. Does it matter, really ? Ask landscape-only photographers, mainly the ones who use chambers or medium-format cameras. Why do they use these devices, are they just masochists, did they win those at some lottery ? Details in landscape are just as important as the quality of the raw cocoa in real hand-made "truffes" (the things you call truffles in Northern America). This is what makes the difference between good and oustanding. For its price, the 7M4 produces outstanding images, and it takes about 3 times its retail price to see a concrete difference in image depth, dynamic, definition.
A lot of people are complaining about the 4k60 being APS-C only. The thing is though, at this price point, only the R6 is offering 4k60 in FF mode, and it overheats. Could Sony have done it in FF mode? I'm going to say probably not. The reason is, I don't think the A7iv and A1 have the same chip in it. Yes it's the same family like say Intel 11th Gen or AMD Zen 3 chips, but like those 2 companies, they have cheaper, and more expensive chips. I think the A7iv has a cheaper chip in it, so it can't do 4k60 in FF. They did this not only to save money, but to keep a separation between the A7iv and the A7Siii.
Hi, Im only a hobbiest/family historian. Ive a 7r3 & many lenses. Im wondring if I buy The 7r4? Though I really like The flip screen for incLuding self pictures. Thank you.
There is one feature of the touch screen i haven't seen anyone mention. If you scroll though the screen displays (using the up on the back scroll wheel) all the cameras setting are displayed, turning on the touch screen, touch any of the settings and adjust them. You have to double tap on any of the settings that will pull up the settings menu. Found this to be a quick way to adjust multiple settings quickly. Let me know what you think.
Great video! One question though; in your comparison photos of the lake/ mountain, the a73 showed ripples on the water and the a74 there weren't many and just looked smoother; was it a difference in camera or just timing of the shot?
Most likely just the timing of the shot. Took me a bit to swap out the cameras and the lens and such so that they’d all be in the same place and with the same lens.
Hey Sam, so it looks like most likely, with a parent or guardian, you can make it work. Also, not sure what age you are but if you happen to be 17 and will turn 18 before the trip, that would also work.
Excellent video giving all of us honest and valuable information, thanks for your effort. As still pictures quality is not noticeable better than A73, is a better quality can be expected with A1?
How is the quality of the sound preamps. I shoot video of various music groups, acoustic, electric, horns, choirs with piano and with percussion and without percussion. I usually use a shotgun mike on my hot shoe. Does this camera have a level control and is it visible during videoing.
I found the sound to be pretty good (considering that they’re on camera preamps) especially if you’re shooting something loud like that and you can keep the gain low. There is a meter so you can monitor on the screen.
@@dunnadidit Do I understand you can have the sound level on screen while monitoring the video on the screen? How. About being able to adjust the level during video.
To me it is a big upgrade to a7III/a7c. But my situation is I am always bring and use 2 cameras for my video shoot. My a7III and a7c works seamlessly together. For wedding if we have second shooter, then we have like 4, 5 cameras. It is kind pointless for one camera has 10bit 422 shooting slog3 and rest of cameras still shoot 8bit 420 in cine2 or hlg. I would say if one has a7sIII and want a second camera is less expensive than a7sIII but still retain all the codec, then this is the great option. But for me until I can afford two a74, I will still stick to my current camera set up.
Waiting to get the A7iv here for Travel Cinematography, the price difference with the A7sIII is major money savings. Savings of abt 1300 euro in Greece which is a nice Tamron 2.8, and an RSC2 Pro combo based on greek Prices... The 4K 120 is the only thing I wish the A7iv would have but I think with the added bitrates for 1080p 120FPS you can definitely "fake" it with a careful upscale. Rolling shutter is definitely not pretty but nothing you can't solve with careful shot planning and even some post processing
Great video, thank you. I am lucky enough to have the Sony a1, but I am looking for a B cam for many scenarios and I am considering the A7IV. The concern I have with the rolling shutter issues is, I shoot a lot of kids dance concerts. A question for you: If I had the A7IV locked off on a tripod for the wide shot to capture the whole stage (so the kids would be fairly small), so you think it would be an issue? The kids would be moving through the frame quickly, but I am not sure that at a distance the rolling shutter would be an issue. I’d appreciate your views. (Oh, I’d be shooting in either 24 or 30frames 4K). Thanks so much. ✌️

Hi Dunno, Great review, I’ve learnt so much, I have a question, or maybe a concern, I purchased a A7 IV yesterday, on taking the body out of the box, I could hear clunky sound, and also feel movement within the body. I asked a friend who has a A7 III, and he said once you turn the camera on, the noise and movement will disappear, he also said it was the inbuilt stabilisation system that was causing the sound and movement. Is this normal Dunno or should I return the camera, any advice would be very welcome.

Well, hello there 🙂
Wow, was searching for it and suddenly it popped up, 8 min after posting hahaha watching!
@sandeepa weerasinghe - HELLO!
@flyenri - nailed it!
One quick question
Does 120fps shoots 8bit or 10bit?
I am surprised that you missed the most important improvement, that of video focusing and tracking. The A7 IV is ahead of the A7c who is ahead of the A7iii. The user's control of how fast it tracks moving objects and people and how sticky you can make it, is the main reason most people are upgrading. And this is an area that demand fast processors (Like the A1). THAT is where the processing power went in case you still wonder :)
This was a followup video as I mentioned. I talked about AF in the first video and no one asked any questions about it so it didn't make it into this one. You're right though... the AF is great!

Loved your Northern Lights photos! Beautiful!
Thank you!!
Surprised I just found your channel! Really enjoyed the flow. Also this answered a few of my questions like the intervalometer
Great to hear!!
Great video thank you !
Cheers!
I think that anything you use will be an upgrade over the 6400 when it comes to moving up to full frame the a7iii takes insane photos, the a7riii also takes insane photos and it has that 40 something megapixel sensor which is wild and also puts it in about the same photo range as the new a7iv with its 33 mp sensor so if you’re trying to get close to the a7iv get the a7riii it’s around 2400 used RN at least that’s what the one I saw today at Best Buy was selling for
A7S111...pulled the trigger...no regrets
Awesome video. So much effort went into this and I appreciate it.
(As an aside, this would also let you put the card right at the beginning of the chapter markers, if you were so inclined.)
Keep up the great work, man!
EDIT: A much more clear example is in the Crop Lenses section at 10:32. It's a bit redundant to use the card so long after you've introduced the subject.
Great video. Do you shoot in slog3? Do you overexpose +2? What filters did you use for this video?
Excellent! Safe & Wonderful Travels!
Very nice review! Thanks!
Travel to Ladakh, India. You will LOVE this place for photography!!!
Loved your video thanks for all the info. I am planning to buy the A7IV.
The separation of photo and video settings as well as the switch justifies the upgrade for me.
Nice!
Yay! I already preordered mine but this video was very helpful. Thank you!
My pleasure!
Great review! Very helpful! Thanks!
Cheers!
I have a question, could you make a beat using sony shutter sounds? I feel like you could hearing the tone/pitch differences between the different models now.
Haha the answer is yes… the real question is… will I?
I shoot still photos, and I'm happy with my a7iii, but I am eager to upgrade to the a7iv. I mostly want it for the slightly better ergonomics, better I/O covers, and AF improvements. Oh, and higher rez sensor is just a nice bonus.
Yeah if those quality of life improvements are the winner for you… they are awesome!
Such a solid video man. Great questions and great insight into this upcoming camera. Helped validate my pre-order of the camera. I feel it will be a huge upgrade from my A7III especially for lapses.
Glad it was helpful my man!!
Yes !
Any advice for the best codec and bit rate for hobbyist 4k video? Essentially the best blend of quality, file size and ease of editing? Thanks!
10 bit xavcs 100mbps is pretty solid!
@@dunnadidit thanks a lot! Subscribed 🙏
Here is why I think that the A7IV is better than the competition (in my opinion).
Canon R6
-No crop in 4k but overheats. It means that you are going to film in 4k more often on the A7IV.
-The RF lenses are really expensive. You can buy EF lenses to adapt them but the autofocus won't be as good as with RF ones.
-It only has 20mpx (which is not really an issue)
-There is still the 30 minutes record limit.
Nikon Z6II
-Films in 4k60 with a 1.5x crop just like the A7IV.
EF AF is still really good
Patrick Rothfuss has shown up in more than one of your videos. Love it.
So gooood!
What actually is 10 bit? Is it set it and forget it? Or does it require extra editing? Kind of like the iPhone has the ultra high dynamic range or whatever they call it where it changes the image totally blown out until you fix it. In the editing.
Awesome video! Thank you so much! Im leaning towards the FX3!
In my experience, it was super fast. WAYYYY faster than the a7iii
Cool to have A7iv with FF lenses fof wedding shoot & with APS-C Lenses for travel. Since it shoots at 4k from 4.6k in APS-C its good.
Exactly!
in the a7III face detection focus was disabled in 1080 120fps mode. how about the a7IV?
What camera and what lens were you using for taking this video? Thanks.
Yeah I have the A7iii and I'm not sure I'm gonna upgrade. Especially if there isn't much of a difference in pictures.
Bam! Well I’m glad I helped with the decision!
Great video, answered some questions that nobody else has. I pre-ordered. I’m coming from an a6300 so it’s nothing but upgrades for me.
NICE!
helo btother is it worth it for me to buy it for vlogs or wedding photo shoots.
Great camera for that!
Thanks for the video! I may have missed it, but what is the video quality in the S&Q settings? Is it still 1080p like the A7III?
4k!! 10 bit 4:2:2 and everything!
@@dunnadidit alright awesome! Thanks for the reply!
There is something I haven't seen in any vide, so I want to ask you: Does it shoot RAW video? like ProRes or other kind?
I believe you can output prores raw to a ninja v (I’m not 100% sure on that though) but it won’t shoot any raw video internally.
@@dunnadidit thank you!
With the 2022 trip you have to be over 18, are you aloud if travelling with an older friend?
Hmmm, I’m not sure about this! I’ll see what trovatrip says
Hey Sam, so it looks like most likely, with a parent or guardian, you can make it work. Also, not sure what age you are but if you happen to be 17 and will turn 18 before the trip, that would also work.
What did you do to get the FX3 to match so well with the A7III? Thanks
I wonder if electronic shutter works with flashes as A1 does, or this function reserved for A1? I couldn't find anyone who checked it 😶
Exactly, nobody is telling us about this! 🙁
Hi. I’m just a hobbiest/family historian. Ive a 7r3, do I need 7r4? Though I like the flip to side screen. Thank u.
On the Sony A74 in 8 bit 60p is there a crop
Hello, is it possible to shoot 4k 25p in apsc crop mode ? Thanks 😉
I believe so!
What is the FX3 you were referring in the video? Please advise.
Wonder if they will change the 4k 60 crop in a future firmware update...?
Also great video, really helped answer many questions!
Wow this helped me so much! Thanks Dunna!
What about raw can we use the ninja ?
Not 100% about that because of the 7K resolution.
Yes you can. And yes you can!
@@dunnadidit Great, as you know the audio is very important to video and thanks so much for clarifying the audio features of thea7iv’s
Thanks for talking about having no 60fps crop in 1080 HD. As I will be using the 1080 HD slot as I have a i5 processor laptop
I used to upscale my 120p to 4k all the time and didn’t really have any issue with it! I think you’ll be even better off now!
8 bit for 120 sucks though
Likely it wouldn’t be an issue if I had to guess.
@@dunnadidit Thank you. Much appreciated.
I wouldn't mind going with the R6 but I've seen that the Ibis is pretty wobbly and ofc the lenses are expensive
What about 4K 50fps. Is there a crop? Or is it just with 60fps.
You should definetly visit south italy.. nearby my house theres a paradise of undiscovered places of untouched nature. Make a whistle if you need a guide and a free place to stay (i got a airbb apartment) you wont regret 😎
Thank you for your videos. I would like to see how good/ easy it is to stream with this camera. With USB and HDMI cable.
Hi Dunno,
Great review, I’ve learnt so much, I have a question, or maybe a concern, I purchased a A7 IV yesterday, on taking the body out of the box, I could hear clunky sound, and also feel movement within the body. I asked a friend who has a A7 III, and he said once you turn the camera on, the noise and movement will disappear, he also said it was the inbuilt stabilisation system that was causing the sound and movement. Is this normal Dunno or should I return the camera, any advice would be very welcome.
Everything is okay, it's in-body-image-stabilization (IBIS) or matrix stabilization
@@borshisme Many thanks for getting back to me so soon, I really appreciate this, I also contacted the camera shop this morning too, and they have confirmed exactly the same advice as you. I can now enjoy my trip with a mirrorless camera. Again thank you.
Will lenses from a Sony A6400 work with it?
