Lord have mercy! The footage in this video is gorgeous! I've always been a fan of Canon's color science but the color and sharpness in the Sony is just SUPREME!
The trilogy is complete!!!! Well done👌🏾. As a former R6 owner, I agree with everything you stated. I absolutely loved the R6, but I yearned for functionality that the ‘6’ lacked. Custom settings in video mode, no 30 min record limit and a plethora of third party lens options made this a no brainer.
@@hannaanbhatti5833 yeah, I’m actually waiting for my r6 mk II to be delivered on Thursday lol. Having said that, it doesn’t take away from what the A74 can do and I’ll probably still use that (A74) most for my client work and join it next year with the A7rV……hopefully @tombuck can review that soon👀!!!!!
@@Ed_Scott Ah sick! All the best and hope you enjoy! What do you suggest I go with? Though I am not tight on budget, I don't want to overspend. I would say I am a hybrid photo/video shooter (70/30). I kind of just want to select a camera so that I can get started on creating my art already haha, but this decision has been tough!
I have an upgraded 64gb ram Razer, 4tb ssd, with I7 10.1 processor that I built for music production. It’s cool that you mention computer compatibility and programs. You’re the only videographer that I’ve seen so this. Computers are a very important piece of the puzzle.
I’ve had one since February and it’s my favorite camera I’ve ever had. The R5 is capable of more quality in video and stills, but I just enjoy using the A7IV more, and the megapixel count is just about perfect for me. I feel like it has a better feature set and better interface than other more expensive Sony cameras. It could have more speed, bigger buffer, less overheating, better IBIS, faster readout, and a better screen. If they do all that (A9 III?), then we will all be in trouble. As things are currently, I honestly would not trade mine for an A1 because the mode dial and third top dial and the articulating screen are all so amazing.
I agree 100%. I want to make a follow up video to this because I've been using the a7IV as a vlog-type camera for the past few months and have gained an entirely new appreciation for it. The mode switch mixed with custom settings is incredible. Being able to go from my standard video settings to 60fps/120fps/long exposure timelapses at literally the flip of a switch is a lifesaver that I've never had on any other camera.
On my M1 MacBook Air, I have a bit of a hard time with the raw files but workable. Love your review. The A7IV is the best camera I have ever owned but for video a gimbal or tripod is required.
@@tombuck man that's a crazy setup right there. I just got my A7iv this week and trying to figure out which 3 lenses to get. So far I'm only set on the Sigma 24-70 2.8.

I've been really impressed with mine; it honestly stacks up better to the a7S III/FX3 than I thought it would. For overheating, I've found so long as you have Auto Power Off Temp set to High (which is pretty much a given to do in any Sony), and have the screen flipped out, overheating is really only a factor in shooting continuous 4K 60p. So if you do mostly quick 5-10 minute clips of 4K 60p, you're unlikely to encounter it even in hot environments.
I’m using this camera and Thailand, which is obviously very hot. Since I set the sensitivity down, I have never had it over heat again while it used overheat really easily. However, I do keep the LCD open and the battery door and memory card doors open just because I can feel the camera getting hot in my hand.
I understand where you’re coming from with the screen res. I had a a7r4 and switched to Leica sl2s and the difference in screen res was night and day. Definitely changed my perspective in what Sony puts priorities on their build
I don't know the in-depth nuts and bolts, but essentially larger camera sensors are better in low light because they have more surface area to capture light. This lets them to gather more light, resulting in brighter and clearer quality. It's like having a bigger window to let more light into a room-more light means better visibility.
Absolutely fantastic video, mate. What profile did you use on the fx3 while shooting in the studio? colours are absolutely amazing, absolutely beautiful. Have you used the in camera profile? Or log and edit. Please can you let me know. Thank you.
Thank you! I used the default “PPOFF” profile and then tweaked the colors a bit in Final Cut, but nothing major. I’ve been experimenting with slog in more recent videos and I like the better dynamic range, but I can’t get the colors right just yet.
@tombuck man, all I'm saying is that it's looking too good. The look is totally different from all other RUclipsrs that I know. Thanks for that info, bro 👊🏼💯♥️
I just learned about your channel thanks to " Big E ". He referenced you during his microphone review (Rode). So, I just wanted your Sony a7 IV review - a most AWESOME video. Very well presented your opinions in a concise and straight forward format, filled with great information. Love you review and I will continue to watch your videos - I just subscribed. Thanks and keep up the GREAT work. Cheers.
Thank you! Big E is a really awesome guy, I love his channel! The a7IV is fantastic. I'm planing to do a follow up to this because I've really grown to appreciate the camera a lot more over time.
9:55 I was cracking up when you did this because when I took my camera fresh out of the box and heard this knocking sound I thought I had received a broken camera. Bear in mind. This is my first real camera purchase aside from a cyber shot over 20 years ago.
Just picking nits (and I know you focused on the 4K-ness of these cameras), but the a7SIII/FX3 have Clear Image Zoom if you shoot in 1080. Clearly not as good as the a7IV, but it's come in handy for me doing a live stream that I knew was going to go out in 1080 or 720. Anyway, awesome, and thorough, review and I watched the whole thing even though I kinda feel like I know all I need to know about the a7IV at this point!
I think the only advantage that the A7siii have is the slow motion performance, and that’s just for the 120fps. If you only need 4k60, you can deal with the super35 crop. Rolling shutter is not a deal breaker for most people. I don’t see ANY reason to choose the A7siii over the A7iv or fx3 nowadays. If you need a video camera, get the FX3, if you need a hybrid, get the A7iv. Simple as that.
Top review, Tom! The α7iii is my workhorse and I am very much a hybrid shooter, so the iv has definitely been on my radar. There's a lot that's compelling, both from a specification and usability point of view, but for my use case I think I'd still be inclined to get a dedicated video camera - even if I do end up with an α7iv, because stills and video are different missions requiring different accessories and a different mindset. It's nice to be able to do both with the one camera, but that's really only one part of the equation, and I find that if I try to do that, I don't do as good a job of either.
I really like the a7IV and it's an awesome value, but I honestly don't think I'd like it as much if it were my only camera. Having the FX3/a7sIII really make up for the compromises of the a7IV. But this is definitely the one I pack in a bag if I'm going somewhere and know I'll need photos/videos. Glad your a7III is still going strong! That camera really is a champ.
Unfortunately, super35 mode cannot be switched during recording. You need to interrupt the recording, then switch to the desired mode, then start recording again. I hope Sony will fix this in the next firmware.
Hello from Mexico!! Excellent video, very good explanation. Just a question, I see that the Sony a7iv has a curtain to protect the sensor, just like the canon ones. I wonder...what do you mean that the shutter can be damaged? (thats what the spanish translation says) You say that regarding the curtain that protects the sensor, how can damage it? We look forward to your honest response
Since the shutter IS the cover, if something happens to hit it or damage it, then it’s a pretty expensive repair, so I think that’s why some people don’t like it. I love it though! And I just try to be extra careful anytime there’s not a lens on the camera 👍
Hi Tom, thanks for all the cam videos. Although this Sony it's not in my "bud-yet" (get it?) 😉 I would love to see a review of a less expensive but good camera, maybe the Sony ZVE10? Maybe you already have a video that you can point me to. As usual, thanks for the awesome/quality content!!! I already upgraded my audio thanks to your reviews, I am currently using the Q9U (USB) and loving it!
I would totally love to make a video on the ZV-E10! It's been out of stock for so long, but it's finally starting to be available again. I might try and get my hands on one if possible.
I love mine. The only time I have got it to overheat was using USB stream mode and at the 1 hour mark it shut off. 10 seconds of rest and I got another 15 mins out of it. Not bad.
I've used the FX3 on a Gimbal during a corporate event at an airport and absolutely had it overheat in only +80 degree weather, as did the A1 while mounted to a tripod in direct sun. I've two A74 and neither overheated while recording 4K30 mostly bc they were recording in the shade. I had another camera man using an A7c which also never overheated. The two cameras I didnt expect to overheat at all particularly the FX3 overheated. All cameras were recording 4K 30 Slog3, 10bit if it was able. The event lasted from 6am through to 8pm. Multiple battery and memory card swaps for each camera. All had their screens tilted or flipped out. Oddly the glass screen protectors on all of them cracked from the heat of the sun, not from any impact. I've filed a warranty complaint as all my camera men found that quite odd.
The FX3 overheated?! That's wild, I've never heard of that happening, especially in such cool weather. Dumb question, but was the temperature setting set to "high?" That's definitely strange. I hope you get it sorted out and it doesn't happen anymore.
@@tombuck well your video looks astonishing! i never seen such a pleasing video (color wise and composition wise) and thank you for your response. Im looking forward to see you hit 1M sub. 🤞🤞
Also, get the Nitecore batteries what have usb-c charging. They´re freaking amazing ! Even charge them in ur car on the way to the photo location f. ex.
Hey, could someone help me? I have a Canon Mark 4 with 100 mm lens, I only shoot middle sized product photography (not professional). Do you think it will make much difference if I sell mine and get Sony ilce4 instead?
I think the biggest question would be if there are any ways that your current setup is letting you down? Both cameras will deliver great images (and that Canon 100mm is fantastic). The a7IV is quite a bit newer, so it will have better autofocus, a newer sensor, and the advantage of a flip out screen. But the Canon is no slouch and still an incredible camera.
18:12 I just subscribed. You remind me of Dave 2d's vibe- very chill, very relaxed viewing experience, and of course, very educational. Keep up the good work!
I can't remember the specs offhand, but I THINK the a7IV is slightly lower quality. But honestly to my eyes they both look the same (which is excellent).
Everything about the Sony A6700 has been explained well. I have a dilemma choosing between the Sony A6700 and the Sony A7 IV. I primarily take photos of sports events during the day. Which camera offers the best image quality in daylight?"
There's really no difference between them in daylight, so I think the decision comes down to how pro/intense your photo sessions are. Crop sensors can sometimes be better for sports since they do give a bit more reach and usually sports photographers want to be as close to the action as possible. But the a7IV does have a higher max shutter speed of 1/8000 vs 1/4000 on the a6700. The a7IV also has dual card slots, while the a6700 only has one. Bot of those are more "pro" features that are important when dealing with clients and high pressure shoots. But neither of those are necessarily dealbreakers either. If you want maximum shutter speed and the added reliability/redundancy of dual card slots, then the a7IV is the way to go. If neither of those things matter much, then the a6700 sounds perfect and will save you like $1K 😎
Hello Tom. I love your videos. My Fuji X100S broke after 9 years and my next camera is going to be the Sony A7lV. I want to get a great portrait lens, specifically for chest up and head only photos. The Sony 135mm f1.8 gm is legendary but it's huge. Is the Zeiss Batis 85mm f1.8 still great? Is there a cheaper alternative by Tamron or Samyang you would recommend? I would even consider a 50mm lens because I love small lenses on small cameras. Your help is greatly appreciated. Everyone else, please chime in here too. I just subscribed. 👍🏼
It's a very personal decision, but I LOVE the Zeiss 85. I've got a relatively recent review on it if you haven't seen it, but to sum it up: it's amazing. The 85mm focal length is fantastic for portraits. I think you'll love the a7IV too! I've been using mine a lot more lately for "vlog" style videos and I've really come to appreciate it in a new way. I'm thinking of making an update video to this that focuses on some of the camera's unique strengths. It's awesome!
Thanks to daylight savings, I can now watch the video when it is released at a reasonable time! Whoo! Love the joke at the start, can't wait to watch the rest!
Hey, I love your video quality. What camera did you use to shot the video? A single camera with lens or multiple cameras. Also did you color grade the footage or this is native? Thanks
Thank you! My main camera is the Sony FX3 with the 24mm 1.4 and I usually have the a7SIII as a b camera with the cheap 50mm 1.8 (camera quality is the same, but I like running audio through the FX3. I have a little preset I made for Final Cut, but nothing crazy. It’s made for my specific setup, but you can download it here free if you want to play around with it: himynameistom.com/downloads
@@tombuck Thanks for the information. I want to get the A7 4 but overheating is concerning me. I do tutorial videos. Example for the back of an iPhone 13 Pro I can be filming easily 2 to 3 hours. I currently use my iPhone to film, but I want a better quality now lol. I was looking at the A7 S3 or A7 4 but overheating reviews of the 7/4 is making me hesitate. If I get either what would be the best camera for repair tutorials ( you can check one of my videos to be specific of how I shot). Thanks. I think FX3 is too video centric for me ( at this moment)
@@ersbit Overheating isn't an issue I've filmed in 4k 10 bit and owed the camera for 6 months and never once seen an over heat warning. as long as the lcd is open and the you switch the heat sensitivity to high you'll likely never see a over heat warning.
There are quite a few videos out there that show that and have some super in-depth overheating tests. My main point was to emphasize that in regular use, overheating hasn't been an issue, but it is possible under certain conditions.
One of my problems with my iPhone is the depth of field. That’s another reason why I’m wanting to upgrade to a dedicated camera. But if I’m looking at your shot, you are in focus, but you were holding the camera and it’s blurry. I hate hate hate that! I don’t want that to happen but I do want a blurry background. Am I able to achieve that? Or if I configure the aperture so that I you could see me and the object I am holding, does that mean I’m losing the Bokeh in the background
I’ve searched every sony a7iv video on RUclips and have only came across ONE video talking about the weather sealing. I just want to know if it’s in par with the Nikon z6ii and content creators seem to skip this conversation for some reason. I know you can buy a cheap cover on Amazon but with your experience using the camera would you feel comfortable using it at 13500 elevation covered in ice and snow in the Rocky Mountains or drenched in Oregon rain?
Ahh, I definitely should've talked about that (I guess I just assume that a camera at this level will have good weather sealing, but that's not always obvious). I haven't used the Z6II, so I can't make that direct comparison, but it's equally as weather-sealed as my a7SIII, which I've never had any issues with. I have used the a7IV in the snow with now issues.
What a great review of this camera! Love the camera, but the overheating sucks 😊 but I would consider it anyways since I live in Norway, not the desert 😅
The LCD display of the A7IV is only 1.04 million dots (a cheapest 1300x800) display. Sony already sold their LCD manufacturing plants to Samsung so they just use the cheapest display possible for a USD2,700 camera.
Im not sure if you’ve made a video on what are your favorite shortcut buttons on the Sony A74 are? I’m new to full frame cameras, or cameras in particular but any shortcuts or customizable buttons are would be helpful! Thanks! -Ernesto
Hey, Tom - thanks for the thorough and thoughtful review. Out of curiosity, when you’re just going out and about for fun, or when you’re traveling, which camera do you reach for? Or do you generally find yourself pretty much always packing 2 bodies?
Oh my gosh, it's really funny you asked this because I'm literally (at this moment) editing a follow up a7IV video where I basically say, "I knew the camera was good, but I didn't give it enough credit and now I think it's incredible!" The a7IV is absolutely my go-to choice. It's the perfect hybrid of photo/video features, and it even has some cool things (like more custom settings) that make it so much fun to use.
Ahhhh I’m stoked to see it! I’ve been hung up about losing the 4K 120p, so I’ve been carrying two bodies. Guess I just need to start leaving the fx3 at home and get over it :)
Nice review! Thanks Tom! I wonder how it stacks up to the other Sony and canon cameras like older models like the 5dmk III, 5d mkIV, m50, 1dx mk II etc!
Thank you so much for your review! I found it super informative !! I am trying to decide between this and the Canon R6 Mark ii. This is mainly due to the cropped 4k at 60fps, for those lovely cinematic shots. How do you feel about this? Would love your advice on which one of the two I should go for? I am wondering whether sony has any other ups when it comes down to photos and videos compared to Canon. As I feel like the features on the R6 Mark ii feels more future-proof but also slightly higher in price! Its a tough tug of war haha! I am hybrid photo/video shooter! Appreciate any thoughts and advice!
Honestly, both of those cameras are winners. A lot of it might even just depend on which one feels more comfortable to your hands. The 4K60 crop hasn't been a huge downside for me. I made a follow up video that explains it a bit more: ruclips.net/video/EXnTzqF6ZX8/видео.html Personally, I think the biggest factor really comes down to lenses (if you have/prefer Canon or Sony lenses). Sony has a HUGE lens selection and there area bunch of third parties like Sigma and Tamron that make awesome options too. Canon's RF mount is more limited (they aren't letting 3rd parties make lenses for it), but the RF lenses are really fantastic. Plus you can use an EF-RF adapter and then use any other "older" Canon lenses from any brand.
If you havent already decided there is one thing to consider. While the Canon R6ii has 4k60 full frame, it only has about 11-12 stops of effective dynamic range in both the 4k60 and 4k30 modes. The Sony A7iv and as a side note the new Lumix S5ii (and original S5) get about 14 stops of usable dynamic range. Depending on what you do, you could argue that the dynamic range will be more impactful on getting a nice shot, over stepping back a little to accomodate the Super35 Crop
@tombuck Hi, great video! I bought the Sony A7IV also and every time i grip the handle i hear a slight annoying squeaking sound from the memory card door. Does your Sony A7IV do the same?
Hey Rob! I haven't had that issue with my camera. The card door is pretty firm and doesn't make any squeaks. Could be something worth reaching out to Sony's warranty support for. I always figure that with expensive things like this, there's nothing wrong with wanting everything to be perfect.
Wow! So much stuff in such a compact package. Bonus points for anamorphic lens flare. There's times I'm tempted by the Sony tech, especially when Fuji cams are getting closer in price. New Fuji X-H2S is expected May 31, will be curious to see specs and price. Thanks for all this info!
Love my A74 it's the poor man A1...with the exception of the puns' great review... OK that blue line from the A7S iii camera was annoying (an anamorphic lens I assume)...I totally agree with the sharpness!
That's a tough one, especially with a full frame camera. You can probably do as wide as 16mm without too much noticeable distortion. I have the Tamron 20-40, which I love.
@@tombuck can u recomend the exact 16mm ur talking about.. Iv ordered the wrong lens before and was'nt easy returning it.. There is a video where a guy vs his go pro 11 to the sony a74 15mm lens, is the 16mm wider than that? Its confusing cos i thought the lower the number, the wider? For example the one i returned was 12mm cos it wasnt as wide as the 9mm i got after the refund.. the 9mm cost 450£ nd the fecking thing has worpt edges aka, if im at the edge of the frame i look obese
So sad that in europe, we don't have 25p in XAVC HS... Only 50p -_- If it was not for the crop, I would actually shoot everything in 50p, with 360° shutter and 180° for slow mo, just because files are smaller 😅
cool but.....The main reasons for overheating is NOT the DSP and processing, it's the lack of enough active cooling, all that going on in a small space of metal/plastic,and the ambient temperature.. Same thing with laptops and power amps which normally have fuses, heat sinks, fans, etc. If it was like 40 degrees in the room or outside, you probably would never overheat, no matter how long you shoot video.
Great video Tom! I have been so happy with my A6400 over the past few years, but this has me thinking... or maybe I just oder the new RODECASTER PRO2! 🤦🏻♂
Sony officially says 520 shots per charge, but I haven't tested that. Battery life is always tough to cover in a review because there are so many variables. If you stick to mostly photos, it'll last longer than if you do video (or keep switching between photos and video). If you do video, different frame rates and recording qualities will affect it, along with image stabilization, audio processing, having something connected to the smart show. In the end, it's got great battery life overall, but you'll never regret having a spare or two.
@@tombuck ok. But I'd love you to actually get it tested since you are already using it. Normally for wildlife photographers, one battery is not enough.
@@tombuck I did find the connection process with the phone app a lot smoother with the A7iv than with the A7ii. But I would still prefer the simplicity/price of the remote control.
Excellente video Tom! (as always!), i think is a more affordable option than FX3 or SIII, Do you recommend the default lens 28-70mm for youtube in small studio? or maybe another lens fit better? thanks!
I have pretty limited experience with that a7III, but I guess it depends on your needs. For photos, they're probably not too far off but the a7IV has quite a few upgrades for video added in to it.
Great review Tom! This is a great camera. I had two (after owing A1&A7siii) but the R5C pulled me back home to Canon w/ an R a never sold. There’s just something inspiring about Canon. I think it’s the LCD/Evf/ergonomics. The A7iv punches way above its weight class tho. Full Hdmi, photo video switch, ibis , better grip, unlimited record, 4k60… Ioooved the extra dial but it just feels like I’m shooting with a computer. May go back some day but Canon knows how to make a camera feel like an extension of the user. Apple vs Android
Help me!! I bought a Sony a7 IV two days ago as my first camera & I have no idea how to use in manual mode, I know how to use it in auto. I don't want to keep using auto, I want to use it like a professional photographer. Also these white dots show up on my pictures, using the anti-dust function/sensor cleaning gets rid of it but it keeps coming back. Already used it twice, Is it defective?
It’s great that you want to move out of Auto, but don’t feel like you need to go straight to full Manual. Personally, I liked starting out with Shutter Priority, where you only need to learn how to set the shutter and the camera does the rest. Then you can add in aperture and ISO later and then you’ll be in full Manual! I have no idea about the white dots- could be due to incorrect exposure.
For professional photo and dabbing into video sony a7iv hands down. If your main focus is commercial/pro video sony a7iv is not reliable when shooting in any 4k mode, bit rate, fps exc. Over heating is a huge problem even with screen open, high temp setting, all doors open even the battery door it will over heat. If your a content creator the sony a7iv will be fine as long as your not continuous shooting over 15 minutes +.
That was the a7SIII with the Zeiss Batis 85mm. That lens is pure magic. I can't believe I went so long without an 85mm at all, but this specific one is really special.
Thank you for the review. Are you noticing any focusing issues with the a7iv and the 85mm Batis? I am noticing when tapping to focus , there is flickering on the screen. I have upgraded to the latest firmware and I still see the issue. Would love to hear your feedback.
I haven't had that issue, just that the Batis tends to focus hunt a lot (but it does that on all my cameras). Maybe "hunt" isn't the right word, but it makes a lot of micro adjustments sometimes.
I haven't used mine for video at all. I don't want to shoot, edit or store video any more. I've struggled my whole life because I tried to do too many things. I only shoot stills with mine.
I really don't know why you didn't open the screen for the overheating tests.... I would never shoot like that myself, and how much it would last with screen open would be of great use, but now i only know how much would last in a situation where i wouldn't put myself in... with closed screen :( i need to know for wedding filmmaking where i sometimes leave it to run for as much as 90 minutes...
As I mentioned in the video, the goal was to put the camera in the worst possible scenario. If you're a wedding filmmaker concerned with overheating, don't get this camera. It's just not worth having to worry about at all, especially when the a7SIII and FX3 are much more reliable in that regard.

Thanks so much! I was so close to ordering the R6 before getting my first Sony. It seems like a great camera, but for video, these are tough to beat.
No time limit is such a treat

@@hannaanbhatti5833 yeah, I’m actually waiting for my r6 mk II to be delivered on Thursday lol.
Killing it this week Tom - have & love my A7 IV & pre-ordered the new Rode Podcaster II. Your channel is getting expensive. 🤣👍

On my M1 MacBook Air, I have a bit of a hard time with the raw files but workable. Love your review. The A7IV is the best camera I have ever owned but for video a gimbal or tripod is required.
A lot of rolling shutter?
This has got to be the best review of this camera that I have ever seen.
Thank you Linda! It really means a lot to hear that- I’m glad the review was helpful!
Idk what you shot this video with but that Camera and lens combo looks incredible
Thanks! It was mostly the FX3 with 24 f1.4 👍
And then the a7S3 with the Zeiss 85
1.8 for b roll.
@@tombuck man that's a crazy setup right there. I just got my A7iv this week and trying to figure out which 3 lenses to get. So far I'm only set on the Sigma 24-70 2.8.
Check out my reviews for the Sony a7SIII and FX3 to round out the “Sony Camera Review Trilogy!”
•a7SIII: ruclips.net/video/BcwC19gE-QA/видео.html
•FX3: ruclips.net/video/Q_CMk-WIqHE/видео.html
Love my A7IV! If you’re going to take photos, then there’s no other choice. But if you’re solely shooting video, then grab the FX3!!!
I agree 👍
I've been really impressed with mine; it honestly stacks up better to the a7S III/FX3 than I thought it would. For overheating, I've found so long as you have Auto Power Off Temp set to High (which is pretty much a given to do in any Sony), and have the screen flipped out, overheating is really only a factor in shooting continuous 4K 60p. So if you do mostly quick 5-10 minute clips of 4K 60p, you're unlikely to encounter it even in hot environments.
Yep, it’s a very specific scenario that causes it.
wrong, mine overheats are 4k 24p
Will I get overheat issues if I shoot in Full HD. I don't shoot in 4k. what about overheat issue if I go with Full Hd continuous shoot. Plz suggest
@@MarkKidsley1989 Still overheating? Even with the last firmware?
@@nvo_truenemogaming7258 bought a ninja V, so haven’t used it
One of best quality tech content on YT.. Bravo ♥
I’m using this camera and Thailand, which is obviously very hot. Since I set the sensitivity down, I have never had it over heat again while it used overheat really easily. However, I do keep the LCD open and the battery door and memory card doors open just because I can feel the camera getting hot in my hand.
Ooh, this is good to know! I'm guessing it's also super humid too. Glad to know the camera is working well!
I understand where you’re coming from with the screen res. I had a a7r4 and switched to Leica sl2s and the difference in screen res was night and day. Definitely changed my perspective in what Sony puts priorities on their build
Even going back to my old EOS R is a pretty crazy leap in screen quality 🤯
They updated the A7RIVA with a better screen-- FYI
Not sure I understand how lowlight functionality works but that comparison was mind blowing. 2nd camera seemed to do way better.
Overheating is quite an issue for me as I live in SEA. I turned off the continuous AF since then. It gets hot but never overheats.
Interesting that AF plays a role. That didn’t occur to me!
They have clear image Zoom in 4K too! It’s super handy! Unless you mean they can Super 3D crop and THEN zoom in 1080…I haven’t tried that 🤔
@@tombuck I'm dumb. I meant they have Super 35 crop mode
Fantastic review Tom! The A7IV is such an awesome camera and I prefer it in almost every way over the FX3/A7SIII other than the overheating.
Thanks Josh! It's a great choice for sure and I've been recommending it a lot.
@@tombuck I would think that the overheating issue could be avoided if we record with the Atomos Ninja V. is this the case? I'd love to know.
@@AndreCorreaNow id love to know as well
I think the only advantage that the A7siii have is the slow motion performance, and that’s just for the 120fps.
That camera really is a champ.
which lens use for your RUclips video shooting?
The Sony 24 1.4gm. It’s expensive but absolutely fantastic.
@@tombuck recently I buy sony a7iv, but my footage over saturated and over exposer, can you send me any tutorial link for solved this problem😓
Unfortunately, super35 mode cannot be switched during recording. You need to interrupt the recording, then switch to the desired mode, then start recording again. I hope Sony will fix this in the next firmware.
It'd be great if you could snap in and out while filming. I wonder if that's possible through an update?
@@tombuck Perhaps it will work if you write to an external recorder. Gotta try it. I do not have an external recorder, otherwise I would check
@@tombuck Thanks for you answer and your time. We keep seeing you
Hi Tom, thanks for all the cam videos.
I might try and get my hands on one if possible.
the anamorphic lens flare is so sick !! love it 😍
Totally unnecessary, but I love it! 😁
Best review I’ve ever seen, great work.
Wow, thank you Nico! That's amazing to hear.
I love mine. The only time I have got it to overheat was using USB stream mode and at the 1 hour mark it shut off. 10 seconds of rest and I got another 15 mins out of it. Not bad.
Interesting- I haven't streamed with it over USB for an hour yet.
If you turn off USB power, it will not overheat during streaming. Of course, it will run out of battery after a couple hours.
Dumb question, but was the temperature setting set to "high?"
That's definitely strange. I hope you get it sorted out and it doesn't happen anymore.
do you intend to get battery grip? I wonder if battery grip will mitigate overheating issue.
I don’t plan to but it is an interesting idea.
what a good quality video. what LUT are you using?
I just have a Final Cut preset that I made, nothing too fancy. I did put it up as a free download though: himynameistom.com/downloads

The good thing about waiting to upgrade is that cameras only get better!
@@tombuck Thanks a lot for the answer. I like how smaller Sony is and hope somehow that it will take sharper images.
18:12 I just subscribed. You remind me of Dave 2d's vibe- very chill, very relaxed viewing experience, and of course, very educational. Keep up the good work!
Thanks so much! Dave is great, so that's a huge compliment 🙏
Hey Tom . Great review . Is the viewfinder as good as the one on the a7siii ?
@ thanks!!!!
Sigma 85mm f/1.4 DG DN is amazing and much smaller than the Sony version.
Thanks to daylight savings, I can now watch the video when it is released at a reasonable time! Whoo! Love the joke at the start, can't wait to watch the rest!
finally, the review we all have been waiting for!
Awesome video, thorough info, greatly appreciated and the play on words giggles too ! Thank you!
I wish you would have retested the overheating usage with Sony's recommendation of have the screen articulated out... :(
There are quite a few videos out there that show that and have some super in-depth overheating tests.
You should make a video over the best a7IV settings
I don’t know about my but I can definitely share my settings 😁
Just got mine in yesterday 🙌🏼

Great vid. Does the auto eye focus work when filming 4k? It currently doesn't with the A7C which is quite annoying.
Yes! It works in every mode 😎
@@tombuck Thank u. Im probably making the switch this month. much respect for the response
@@tombuck awesome thank you bro
You said you never used panasonic ibis. I can tell you its much much better than anything sony has. Gh5 user here
What a great review of this camera!
Thanks! -Ernesto
Could you compare the default PP video to your canon?
Wish I could like your video twice. Great video
I made a follow up video that explains it a bit more: ruclips.net/video/EXnTzqF6ZX8/видео.html
Personally, I think the biggest factor really comes down to lenses (if you have/prefer Canon or Sony lenses).
ISO is higher than the number of subscribers my channel will ever have😂
Wow! So much stuff in such a compact package. Bonus points for anamorphic lens flare. There's times I'm tempted by the Sony tech, especially when Fuji cams are getting closer in price. New Fuji X-H2S is expected May 31, will be curious to see specs and price. Thanks for all this info!
Ooh, new Fuji? I didn’t know, that’s awesome!
Love your channel... Out of curiosity, which lens do you have on the A7IV in this video?
I think it’s the Zeiss Batis 85mm
Love my A74 it's the poor man A1...with the exception of the puns' great review... OK that blue line from the A7S iii camera was annoying (an anamorphic lens I assume)...I totally agree with the sharpness!
I positioned the light specifically to make the flare 😁
(The lens typically doesn’t flare unless you make it intentional)
What lens for sony a74 would be same wide as gopro hero 11 4:3 or 8:7 without worpt edges
Only 50p -_-
If it was not for the crop, I would actually shoot everything in 50p, with 360° shutter and 180° for slow mo, just because files are smaller 😅
cool but.....The main reasons for overheating is NOT the DSP and processing, it's the lack of enough active cooling, all that going on in a small space of metal/plastic,and the ambient temperature.. Same thing with laptops and power amps which normally have fuses, heat sinks, fans, etc. If it was like 40 degrees in the room or outside, you probably would never overheat, no matter how long you shoot video.
Are you recording to your camera or directly to Ecamm?
I record to the SD card since my ATEM is limited to 1080.
Subscribed based on the 15:00 PP off one liner. Omg that was fantastic.
It’s very hard not to laugh every time I see that.
Great video Tom! I have been so happy with my A6400 over the past few years, but this has me thinking... or maybe I just oder the new RODECASTER PRO2! 🤦🏻♂

Thanks for a brill review as always! Very thorough!
I might as well stick with my trusty canon, i'm to poor lol. As always, a great video though! keep up the good work :)))
What is the battery life?? How many shots can be taken here?
14:45 indeed. I didn't know about the absence of the IR sensor.
Definitely a bummer. I sat there for a long time trying to find the option in the settings 🤦🏻♂️
@@tombuck I did find the connection process with the phone app a lot smoother with the A7iv than with the A7ii. But I would still prefer the simplicity/price of the remote control.

Excellente video Tom! (as always!), i think is a more affordable option than FX3 or SIII, Do you recommend the default lens 28-70mm for youtube in small studio? or maybe another lens fit better? thanks!
Better to get the Sigma 24-70 or 28-70 f2.8.
The kit lens is not that great, you should avoid it.
Great and honest review - thanks!
Thank you! It's been a great camera for me!
How would you compare it with A7iii if I wanted to save some money?
I have pretty limited experience with that a7III, but I guess it depends on your needs. For photos, they're probably not too far off but the a7IV has quite a few upgrades for video added in to it.

Tom, I am yet to get a buyer for my Rodecaster pro 1. 🙂
Hi what lens do you have on the camera? Zeiss 85 mm ?
My main shot is the Sony 24GM, but most of the b roll shots are with the Zeiss.
Best review bro
Thanks! It’s an awesome camera. 👍
Did you send me a message to message on what’s up about a give a way
Not me over here looking at my $600 camera and $260 lens and wishing I had the money for a $2500 camera
I will buy the @7V in maybe 3 years... I use the @7III and i dont think, i should buy every next Cam...
The A7SIII's over-exposure at Max ISO in pitch-black darkness, as unusable as the image may be, has to be the most surreal thing in camera reviews.
It's kind of like a CSI "Enhance!" scene taken to the max 😁
For professional photo and dabbing into video sony a7iv hands down. If your main focus is commercial/pro video sony a7iv is not reliable when shooting in any 4k mode, bit rate, fps exc. Over heating is a huge problem even with screen open, high temp setting, all doors open even the battery door it will over heat. If your a content creator the sony a7iv will be fine as long as your not continuous shooting over 15 minutes +.
1080p no over heating.
What I want to know is which camera and lens you used to create that thumbnail! Those Bokeh Ballz were perfectly round and without onion rings!
Sometimes learning what you DON'T want is just as important as learning what you do want. Hope you're enjoying the camera for photos!
@@tombuck Quitters win! If you quit everything that doesn't give you joy, all you have is stuff that does.
Great video 👏
Thanks Lucas!
Aside from my Sony a6500 the Sony a7iv is my only full frame sadly
no focus bracketing
