"Only the A1 and the 7IV has the closed shutter when off" Actually the A9II had a firmware update late last year that allowed it's shutter to close when off. Other than that, really excited to get the A7IV. Planning to make it as my B-Camera alongside my A1
Thanks Manny! I bought a Z6ii as a stop-gap till the Mark 4 landed... am loving the Z6ii, but this camera is the perfect sweet spot for almost every type of photography for the average joe like me. 30mp is perfect, variable screen for unique perspective, amazing customization... and most importantly the AF. Still waiting to see what Nikon might bring to the firmware table, but most likely will purchase this also. Shout out to "3rd Coast Coffee" if it's still around there in Chicago (Attended College downtown).
The 10 fps raw is in drive mode Hi+, which, concealing the present scene and displaying the prior shot, is often unusable on critical action. Shooting while viewing live, the top burst is 8 fps, drive mode Hi. Also, 10 fps raw requires a CFexpress type A card, anyway, a 160 GB costing 400 USD. But on SD card, the buffer, instead of over 800 frames, is only some 25 frames. So in effect, the camera shoots 8 fps and costs 2900 USD. For such compromises on action photo and mobility amid action video-the 4K 60fps video having a 1.5x crop factor-the 33 MP sensor is a gimmick and bad excuse.
Thank you for a detailed review that even just someone who is just starting can understand. I've been looking into this camera for a couple weeks now. This Video has really helped answered my questions that no one else answered!
Good detail in one of the first reviews out there. Appreciate you identifying the little changes and the difference in experience over the III. Need to figure out if the little changes all add up for me. Waiting to see $AUD price. Thanks Manny.
edit : $3988. that is flagship pricing more interesting to see australia's total allocation. History shows it was not great for the A1, the first preorders are the only that was fulfilled (before this week). A7iv is also quoted for 3 months.
Thank you. I stopped the video where you said "you're not going to want to buy the A7 IV just because you want better image quality". That's how you start a vide with integrity. Thumbs up, subbed.
Great video Manny. One thing you mentioned that I didn’t see from other videos is the ambient light preview button. That’s a cool feature. I also liked the objective style, it was a very honest breakdown in my opinion.
i watched a ton of other reviews on this and i am coming from an a9 and needing a 2nd body and prob will get this for the photography and extra video features. I've been looking at reviews for just the photo focus and manny does it. I love that he told us that you can map an ambient key to the keys.
Thanks, Manny, I haven't watched your videos in years. I have been lazy so I was checking in, I am keeping my Sony a7-3 for now. Love the ink. Keep grinding.
Great review. I wish I was in the market for a full frame camera. I just bought the a6600 a few months ago and I'm loving it so far. I might get the a7iii next year.
4:09 the red record button can be reprogrammed just like a C1 button when in stills shooting mode on the collar. When you go to movie mode it will change back to the record video button.
So far you have the best a7iv video.. Thank you so much. The only difference I can tell from a compressed youtube video is the slightly better highlight retention in the a7iv
I just ordered this a few hours ago, I'm upgrading from a Nikon D810 to the Sony A7R IV. For me this will only be a photo camera, even on my D810 I've never used it for video. I wanted to jump from DSLR to mirrorless and wanted faster auto focus. Thank you for the video and info, I cant wait to get my Sony A7R IV.
Well, Ive finally just recently joined the sony ship with a 6400. I was thinking to save up monies to some day get both a a7siii and a a7riv. I think that will still be my game plan. A lot of people are going to give the a7-4 grief, but you gotta remember, the a7-3 improved by leaps and bounds, now theyre to the point where improvements are going to be slow and small. And thats ok, its hard to find things to improve when you are getting so close to perfection. Yes, perfection, all brands of cameras these days are amazing, we are seriously spoiled with tech in 2021. I just hope Sony arent victims of their own success.
Hello! This clip is brilliant, the best way to test the quality of the image, I have never seen anyone do something like this. Extremely good clip. If there is a possibility, I would be very curious what the differences are between a7IV and a7R V. I wish you much success in everything you do!
I am a Sony user from last 4 years now, changed from A7II to A7RII to A7III for its hybrid capability. Its almost 2+ years with my A7III now, and I can say this is still one of the best hybrid camera but lacks somewhat in video. Now, if you're coming fro older A7II or A7RII or any other system or really old A7III, A7IV is worth the price as one of the best. Especilally for video with 4K 60p, higher res., S-Log 3, S-Cinetone, 10bit 4:22, Focus Map and Gyro Data and much more.
@@JankPhotoJournalism As well as in other moments, it was certainly noticeable to me when Manny zooms in to point out the color noise in the hair for the A7III at around 8:48 . The A7III skin tones to me are much cooler and more magenta compared to other colors in the same scene. A7IV to me seems to do better here. Having shot Nikon, Fuji, Canon, and Sony I’ve often spent a little extra time editing the skin tones on my A7RIII than the others.
@@JankPhotoJournalism The images at 10:30 to me also demonstrate the improvement in colors in the overall scene as well. Most noticeable differences being in the skin and stone wall, again with the A7III having an unpleasant magenta cast.
@@one901 idk what your viewing the video on but on my iPad Pro it’s quite noticeable to me and I imagine it’s probably more so without RUclips’s compression
I'm actually thinking of "upgrading" from my A7RII to this. Yes, I'm giving up some resolution, but the AF system is so far advanced, that it makes a far bigger difference when objects are moving. Also, I suspect the ISO is at least a stop better in this new body. So even if I disregard ergonomics, the number of keepers per event/session will be significantly better, even with the lower resolution.
That’s what I did on the Canon side. Went from the 6D Mark II, a perfectly fine, full-frame, to the R6, and it’s so worth it. So many little headaches removed.
Well i dont see here that i should upgrade specially in photography side... a7iii still holds up.. just happy to hear. Imago stabilazion not that much better.. got to take More photos.
I'm excited to upgrade from the Sony A6500 to the Sony A7IV. This is EXACTLY what I've been waiting for. Now I just need to work some overtime and save up.
I was debating on getting an A7Riii for $2000 or an A7Riv for $3000 and after reading the reviews and evaluating my needs I decided to go for A7iv for $2500! My A7iii is pretty battered and needs help! A7iv sounds like a perfect even/everything else, jack of all trades hybrid camera which means I'll be a happy camper!
yeah okay, nobody underexposes images by that much, but apply that noise flexibility onto night-time shooting and you will get a noticeable advantage any day of the week.
BEST CAMERA OUT !!! 🔥🔥 Been enjoying this camera been using it for social media ads style content for reels and photography for social media graphic and also having fun and shooting music videos and other creative things and boy let me tell you it’s so fun and definitely a BEAST TOOL !!! I love customizing my buttons and everything it’s super fast I can just switch from 1,2,3 and have presets for 24 fps , 60 fps and 120 fps ! To never miss a shot !! It’s hybrid af for what I do ! 10/10 all my clients love !! This has definitely locked me in more with being a creature and getting the shots I desire !! Amazing at night !! Crazy I’ve been using the stock Lense !! I just bought a 35mm f/1.4 GM and a 100 mm sigma & fe mount for a nifty 50! Lens so for pictures and shoot some manual videos !! Can’t wait to continue learning it and buy more things for it !!
Thank you Manny, I think this video has convinced me that my a7 III is still awesome and that the expense of acquiring the a7 IV, it's vertical grip and a CF Express card would not result in measurably better still photos. I figure with local and California sales taxes that amounts to close to $3500. I was thinking of selling my a7 III and vertical grip to KEH as I don't have the time and savvy to sell to a private party. That sale would offset around $850. I shoot almost 100% stills and your comparison of the III and IV was an eye opener. The IQ is so close. There were three features that appealed to me on the a 7 IV, the extra 9 megapixels, the shutter that closes when off and the 10 bit video capability (thinking I would shoot more video with better editing in post options). I know I have serious GAS behavior as I already have more camera bodies and lenses than I really need. I'm now thinking I'll wait a few years and see what Sony has in store for the inevitable a7 V. Thank you for your reviews, they are extremely informative and straightforward, they are unique among RUclips camera videos.
I will be upgrading from an a6000 so I can’t be more excited. I have changed my mind what I will be getting over the past few months but this perfect. I really wanted a touch screen, had the perfect resolution and the amazing focus. Anyone else here upgrading from the a6000?
With this coming in at $2500 and the a7iii at $1800, I don't think this is justifying its price for most photographers. I mean sure, if your business is paying for it, cool; but given that the improvements are very much iterative and there's no significant improvement in image quality, I don't think it's worth $700 more. And as someone who strongly believes in buying used gear, a used a7iii will fetch around $1400. I definitely do not think a new a7IV is worth an $1100 premium over a used a7iii.
The biggest upgrade for me would be the better EVF, the increase in MP but mostly the AF. I've been waiting to see if Sony would release a firmware upgrade to the A7iii AF but clearly this was never going to happen. That's the only issue with the A7iii AF if it loses the eye/ face then it's a bit hit and miss. Is it enough for me to upgrade, probably not, but if you're a full time professional then it would be a worthy upgrade. Having said that if you're a full time professional wouldn't you have the A7r or A1 🤔
I have an a7Riii and shoot mostly still. I do some video but not a lot. I can’t tell if the improved auto focus, menu system and flip screen is enough to sell my a7Riii and make the switch to the a7iv. Thanks for another great video!
Great video. Can you explain how you map the ambient light preview? I’ve been wondering for a long time if there’s a convenient way to do this without turning the flash off
tbh the reason I preordered the A7IV is the fact that I can see the AF point. That was the tipping point for me. Also more pixels, better af, 10 bit video, but AF point finally visible outdoors on the LCD ....
@@NicoDa1 pay $1000 and get the a7siii or fx3 is pretty much the move. Kinda bummed about the a7iv though. It kills me that it has such a dumb issue lol
i’ll probably buy the a74 for photography (33mp with such good low light capabilities is amazing), i don’t really care about video that much, but the crop on the 4k60 is a little bit of a let down, i’m happy they’ve added a flippy screen tho
This is the best b-cam for A7S3 owners because of the dual memory. It's definitely more photocentric but can shoot great video in a pinch. The ONLY gripe is the rolling shutter in 4k24/30. If they can just make it a little better in a firmware upgrade, it wouldn't make people not buy other cameras, but I believe it would make people feel better about having bought this camera over the Canon or the EV series.
Manny!! Talk about the accuracy of the rear screen. I got so pissed off after the release of the A7iii all the RUclipsrs blowing their load about how great it was without even one(!!) of them mentioning the rear screens accuracy was rubbish. Simply test shoot a b&w photo with a lot of white and tell us if the white has a magenta cast. My A7iii went back to Sony twice including one trip back to Japan only for them to tell me that’s just how it is and it’s within calibration spec. Needless to say I sold it and went to another brand.
They are shills working for sony they won't tell you the whole truth in fear of sony firing them lol. I'm reading the comments on here i didn't realize there are so many people having problems with their sony. It's so true what Ken Rockwell said about sony. Sony has the looks of a flashy Ferrari with mad specs made in China and unreliable...he went on to say he wouldn't bet his life on it to kill a bear if he was attacked lol
AYOOOOOO @4:04 great review tho, I think it really answered a lot of people questions whether or not they should get into the A7IV. Myself I recently got the A7iii a year ago so I can’t really jump to the next version but it okay! The A7iii is such a solid camera that it’s hard to give up and switch. If I had the money maybe I’d get the A7IV but regardless anyone / everyone needs to be happy with what they have already and make the best out of it.
Using preproduction α7 IV units, Gordon Laing and Jared Polin got uncompressed raw up to 6 fps [1,2]. Polin seemingly insists to burst only uncompressed raw [2]. But the benefit is likely negligible, except to shoot fine art at rapid fire while blowing out highlights to publish the result at high magnification [3]. The main problem is that even compressed raw at 10 fps is overstated or mistaken. The 10 fps potential is of drive mode Hi+, whereby the viewfinder conceals the present scene and displays the prior shot [1,4]. For viewing live, the fastest is Hi, an 8 fps potential [1]. The α7 III, if with poorer autofocus, does all of that. But α7 IV's raw 10 fps, useful for noncritical action-mainly action staying on axis or predictable [4]-might cost 2900 USD. Writing to SD card, Laing's did 10 fps JPEG, but 8 fps raw with JPEG, and 8 fps raw alone [1]. Raw 10 fps, even with JPEG, was to CFexpress type A card [1]. The capacity 80 GB costs 200 USD, while 160 GB costs 400 USD. Sony's quiet shutters, new in 2015's 42MP α7R II, quelling camera shake, aid resolution, but 24MP α7 III's loud clunks, similar to DSLR mirror shock, seemingly return for α7 IV's 38% more pixels. The α7 IV's 33 MP are some 65% beyond its mirrorless rival, Canon R6-12 fps raw uncompressed [2]-and 2020's new flagship DSLRs, Canon 1DX III and Nikon D6. Those other cameras are some 20 MP. An α7 IV of 26.5 MP-10% beyond α7 III's 24 MP-would be 33% beyond 20 MP. Or reuse α7R III's shutter and α7 III's sensor-20% beyond 20 MP-so α7 IV's 10 fps, 25% beyond 8 fps, are steady and live view. Megapixel bias-leeway for crude shutter, then much crop in post-, _then_ print several feet wide-is gimmicky. - 1) Gordon Laing, "Sony A7 IV review: Photography vs A7 III vs EOS R6 part one", RUclips @ _/watch?v=8Mil4Jn51Fc&t=957s,_ 21 Oct 2021. 2) Jared Polin, "Official Sony a7 IV hands-on preview: Don't buy until you watch!!! (vs Canon R6)", RUclips @ _/watch?v=z0jOdqQ73FA&t=516s_ and @ _/watch/?v=z0jOdqQ73FA&t=1235s,_ 21 Oct 2021. 3) Richard Butler, "What difference does it make? Sony uncompressed raw", _DP Review,_ 23 Sep 2015. 4) Jason Vong, "Sony a7 IV-the upgrade we've been waiting four!", RUclips @ _/watch?v=eVvUs9lFatY&t=444s,_ 21 Oct 2021, indicates simply "10 fps" while showing footage of α7 IV's monitor during burst with subject walking on axis toward camera on tripod, footage that to me looks compatible with display either of present scene or of prior shot.
i have gone through many reviews and decided to go for a6100 or 6400 (due to budget of course), but the small evf is a big bummer once i check the display unit at sony center. Things change pretty quickly once you see the actual unit compared to all youtube reviews. Kudos for Ortiz who point out the real issue first .
you just gotta ask yourself, when does the dust get on the sensor? take a photo right after a lens change, and compare it to 3 months of zoom pumpin' fun😁
Amid life's ups and downs, 2020's ins and outs, and work injury, I've been mostly inactive since 2019. Since then, I've bought an α7R III and an α7 III, resold them before much use, and recall no dust problem. Yet in late 2018, on switching from Canon to Sony-an α7R II-I soon caught dark spots on photos and footage. My only _external_ zoom lens-a Canon standard zoom on Sigma's MC 11-was rarely used. My main zoom, an ENG, was Sony's FE PZ 28-135mm f/4. Never checking lenses for air leak _rear,_ I now, or later, will. Anyhow, dust appearance was rapid and chronic. At first, I concluded that swapping lenses outdoors-what I had expected to be fine despite the warnings and hearsay-had in fact got dust on the sensor! But abruptly, more dust would appear amid usage only indoors and a lens staying attached across days. Seeking the dust's source, finding no looseness at the lens mount, I suspected that dust already beyond it gets jostled until-. Maybe this fostered my aversion to repurposing the shutter, toughest of all to clean, as dust shield.
Is it worth upgrading from Sony A7RII to Sony A7IV? Because according to DXOmark, the A7RII is still one of the best sensors. It's at the top of the list. As an A7RII user, I'm curious about this.
100 years from now, Sony will be making gigapixel bodies that can shoot at a million frames per second, and track a mosquitoes eyelash, but it'll still come with a recycled Gameboy Color lcd...
@@de-graftasafo-adjei4646 I decided I would buy a Sony body again if the 7iv had a decent LCD, but alas, Sony went ghetto again, so I'll stick to my Z6 and D850. I hate reviewing my shots on a super low grade display.

more interesting to see australia's total allocation.
"If you miss the shot (by 5-6 stops)" on a mirrorless body with EVF... yeah)))))
Great video Manny. One thing you mentioned that I didn’t see from other videos is the ambient light preview button. That’s a cool feature. I also liked the objective style, it was a very honest breakdown in my opinion.
when was that in the clip?

Just get another a7iii or decent glass. Save your money for the A7V or A7RV. I love Manny's insights, he always keeps it real.
i watched a ton of other reviews on this and i am coming from an a9 and needing a 2nd body and prob will get this for the photography and extra video features.
Manny those first two shots....pure 🔥. Top notch composition
Great review bro I learned a lot from you over the years in terms of Sony products from a photographer’s standpoint
Great review. I wish I was in the market for a full frame camera. I just bought the a6600 a few months ago and I'm loving it so far. I might get the a7iii next year.
great stuff Manny. Cant wait to get to feel one in my hand. So so happy its finally here!!!
Best part was, "Do I need it? I already have (counts basically every sony camera there is), I'm gonna buy it :D"
I may have literally chuckled out loud.
I swapped my beloved A7r iii for the 7 IV. For my big hands it’s made a big difference.
The colors, especially skin tones look a lot better on the A7IV! Definitely a nice bonus to save that time on editing.
I don’t notice a difference in skin tones on Manny’s photos in this video. I’m hoping the IV is better!….Manny what do you say?
They look exactly the same
@@one901 idk what your viewing the video on but on my iPad Pro it’s quite noticeable to me and I imagine it’s probably more so without RUclips’s compression
I am still using A7RII and I get this AF system slowness man. A7R V is in the pipeline, let's see what it brings.
Well i dont see here that i should upgrade specially in photography side... a7iii still holds up.. just happy to hear.
Imago stabilazion not that much better.. got to take More photos.
Saw so many reviews but this one finally helped me decide. Thank you
I'm excited to upgrade from the Sony A6500 to the Sony A7IV.
You are right mate a7iii gonna be my 3rd camera keep it up be blessed..
For the resolution, variable angle screen, shutter protecting sensor alone, is worth upgrading in how i use my a7iii
I just saw the lady announcing the sponsor and I immediately hit the like button 🤣.
I like that this is branded as first impressions and not a review. The jumping around works great to make it interesting as well.
@Tweed Penguin aps-c?
How about buy an R6. Sony obviously wants you to buy it so they crippled the a7iv.
Where do you get a A7III for $1800 ?
Also, the swivel screen on the m4 is not a photographer’s dream.
what about z6ii & R6?
Manny! Can we get you as the main model next time! Those are so entertaining!
There’s a handful of people I watch for the new gear but I come here for the focus on photos and not the deep dive into video.
Great review Manny.... I am a Nikon guy but looking for more versatility.... so this is it... Thanks...
I took copious notes. Thank you.
Love that you only address photography, legend.
I can’t wait to get the Sonya7IV
Great video. Can you explain how you map the ambient light preview? I’ve been wondering for a long time if there’s a convenient way to do this without turning the flash off
tbh the reason I preordered the A7IV is the fact that I can see the AF point. That was the tipping point for me. Also more pixels, better af, 10 bit video, but AF point finally visible outdoors on the LCD ....
meeh im still pretty happy with my A7III, im pretty jealous of the form factor, die EVF and the screen, but thats not enough for me to upgrade.
@@NicoDa1 yeah thats true 10 bit is a killer, but still not enough for me, i rarely make videos
@@NicoDa1 10 bit is nice but its dead in the water when the a7ivs biggest flaw is rolling shutter. disappointed it has rolling shutter.
@@NicoDa1 pay $1000 and get the a7siii or fx3 is pretty much the move. Kinda bummed about the a7iv though. It kills me that it has such a dumb issue lol
Hey, Manny great video. Still waiting for the video-part video you wanted to present. Keep ip the great work.
I've the A7RII since few years now, and the A7IV look great for my main camera and the RII as back up
Was waiting for the A7IV but coming from the A7II, the A7III will be more than enough for my needs and a huge upgrade. Thanks for the video Manny 👍
WAOW BENQ PHOTOSHOP SCREEN LOVE
Manny Ortiz the fully articulate screen that will make me buy the camera thanks Manny the heire style suit you very well
This is coming tomorrow for me to replace my ever so cherished D800. I’m so excited although sad to know I can’t use my fast Nikon glass unfortunately
Wow!! Thanks for review… I’m buying the A7iv to complement my A7riv … I skipped the A7iii series altogether …Glad I waited…!!!!
You can see @8:41 the A7iii has that magenta look to the pulled up shadows where as the A7iv doesn’t
i’ll probably buy the a74 for photography (33mp with such good low light capabilities is amazing), i don’t really care about video that much, but the crop on the 4k60 is a little bit of a let down, i’m happy they’ve added a flippy screen tho
I'LL WAIT FOR THE A7RV
@@viperstinger77 Thats not even true. Rockwell says he likes Sony on his website
I'm convinced, i'm joing the bandwagon. From nikon dslr to sony mirrorless.. thanks for the info.
I'm still rocking my 1st cam A6000 and haven't used it to its full potential YET.. Def like the body though, looks comfortable.
Pretty disappointed at the burst rate for uncompressed raw.

Best video ending yet!
i have gone through many reviews and decided to go for a6100 or 6400 (due to budget of course), but the small evf is a big bummer once i check the display unit at sony center. Things change pretty quickly once you see the actual unit compared to all youtube reviews. Kudos for Ortiz who point out the real issue first .
Just feels like the Sony A9 still rocks after all this time
Great Information, tech talk and details here.. Great work!
Manny is that friend/photographer/videomaker I wanna go out, take a coffee and shoot with
I was hoping that Sony, instead of leaving the shutter exposed to collect dust, would introduce a dedicated sensor shield that closes [04:54].
you just gotta ask yourself,
when does the dust get on the sensor?
take a photo right after a lens change, and compare it to 3 months of zoom pumpin' fun😁
This is something that Nikon is definitely doing now…
Amid life's ups and downs, 2020's ins and outs, and work injury, I've been mostly inactive since 2019.
How prescient the Nikon prediction, fulfilled in the Z9.
Patiently awaiting your Nikon Z9 review.
Thanks to your reviews. A74 it is. Coming from Canon bodied and a Sony a6400.
Is it worth upgrading from Sony A7RII to Sony A7IV? Because according to DXOmark, the A7RII is still one of the best sensors. It's at the top of the list. As an A7RII user, I'm curious about this.
Your reviews are impressive, happy to share!
@Manny Ortiz You can do that on the a73 as well just program the button to live view display to on or off..

I was so looking forward to purchasing the A74, but after seeing the a lot of people having issues with Af at close distances, and Sony have recently acknowledged there is an issue, I think I will wait to see if it will be fixed with a firmware update..
Sorry Manny I think you're wrong about the size people that have smaller hands are going to hate it. People have larger hands are going to love it That's what you should be saying. I have smaller hands I really don't like it it's about the same size as my A7R4 I really prefer the A7R3 the size of it was perfect everything about it was perfect size has nothing to do with the heating problem but I'm sure you know that. I do love the a7 4 right now The eye out of focus is insane I wish it was smaller that's the whole idea about going mirrorless is not larger but smaller. But another great review thank you for your time
