    I don't know why people are acting like super 35 mode is a shortcoming or a downgrade in quality. Super 35 is often preferable for run and gun / doc work because it's the right balance between shallow DoF and a enough depth to keep things reasonably in focus. This is especially crucial when shooting over-cranked because when you buzz focus, it's much more noticeable because it's out of focus 2.5x longer. Super 35 is the standard look for motion pictures, Full Frame is a specialty look. No shade on you if that's the look you need for your work but there are lots of us video professionals out here that WANT Super 35 4k 10 bit and are glad this camera is finally out.

      Then they shouldn't have ever released the FX3. A7IV can have 4k 60fps no crop and A7SIII still would have so much more to offer in terms of video specific features. In my view that is a miss, badly examined and lazy approach. Which will only cost Sony potential buyers looking at competition offerings. So they did not protect A7SIII nor FX3, they probably will bleed sales of A7SIII, FX3 and A7IV as a result. At video side of things A7IV not only has some cool new features, but also some key missing things and I am not including the crop in 4k 60fps, so A7SIII is well distinguished for it to be safe from A7IV sales. But that's just my opinion...

    • @DanasAnis
      @DanasAnis 3 года назад +1

      Many new features of A7IV can be added to A7SIII via firmware update, leaving only 33mgpx sensor with its photography capabilities as an advantage and the super 35mm option for filming. Autofocus capabilities might be a tiny bit better than on A7SIII, but I don't think it is going to be revolutionary better, both cameras share lots of same dna, oversampling from 7k is okay, but 4k 120fps full sensor, 1080p at 240fps, better codecs alone make A7SIII stand out. Better viewfinder and screen also makes it stand out. Different market aims I think, there is no reason not to include 4k 60fps FF in A7IV. If it's too much to handle 33megalixels, pixel binning could be a acceptable compromise. Which makes A7SIII stand out, 4k 60fps ff no pixel binning. It's a miss and not a great decision. And this is a new camera, it would be strange if it didn't have improvements in areas like autofocus etc. Anyway, sales will be big, because it's a great camera overall, however they could have been even greater numbers... A7IV makes more confused reactions than excitment. Somehow A7III positioned it's line into hybrid shooters league's choice because of how balanced and great overall it was for the time, which I guess introduced bigger expectations from people (which were not that big, basically they could have introduced same sony a7iii with 4k 60fps ff and 10 bits, some autofocus updates, vari angle screen, that's all...) and Sony marketing guys decided not to use the moment it seems... leaving an open window.

    The 4K 60fps crop is two fold. 1) It helps limit overheating. That 7k to 4k heats things up by a lot. So that helps. 2) As you said, it is to keep people wanting the A7s III. They aren't going to make a camera that is better than their recent release, for $1000 less.

I still have one of the A6300s that I used to dual-wield for weddings, and this A7IV is the final step to replace that APS-C system. It’s got great video and photo features, and while it’s a bummer that it can’t do 4k60 in full-frame, that’s why I have the A7SIII anyway. The A7IV will be an excellent choice for me as a B Cam with adequate video capabilities (remember, still 10-bit 4:2:2) and better photography capabilities (which the A7S III leaves a lot to be desired on).

    The A7iv has a dual gain sensor, contrary to what you said. Another video showed at what iso it switched to the 2nd gain in s-log3, I don't remember the value but it was way below 12800.
    Why 4k60 is cropped? Very easy answer: sensor readout speed. The sensor cannot read the uncropped 16:9 region 60 times per second, it can do it like 40 times per second only, which is too slow, that's why there's a crop. The A7siii with its lower MP has a much faster readout speed which is why it can do 4k60 and even 4k120 with a small 1.1x crop (because again it's not fast enough to read 4k120 without the crop).

    Great review. I agreed with your dislike of the cropped 4K 60 as the main thing to dislike. But it was interesting to hear how you felt about it when shooting with the 16-35mm f2.8. I own the A1 and A7s III and am hoping Sony updates the firmware to bring us all the nice updates in here like focus breathing compensation, focus mapping, eye detect for animals and birds in video, etc. I really liked the switch between stills, video and S&Q. One other thing I'd like Sony to do would be Shutter Angle to make it easier to switch frame rates. I do have presets for those for higher frame rates, but if you switch between them, you lose your manual exposure settings.

    I pre-ordered the A7iv. So, in case you're wondering its $2,499. And I'm not discouraged by the crop in 4K 60p because I don't use it that often. I understand why they did the crop, and it's - like you said - they did it to protect the A7Siii. Who knows, maybe they'll change that in a firmware update. But, it still doesn't bother me. I shoot mostly narrative film, so slow motion isn't a major concern for me. So, in the end, the A7iv will be quite capable for my needs. And at $1,000 less than the A7Siii, I'd say it's a no brainer.

    Thanks for this detailed review, the most fruitful one on RUclips. I really dissapointed when I see 4K 60p on crop. I 100% agree your reasoning. I was shooting 4K 60p with my Osmo pocket and Mi Mix3 smartphone, which were generally not sufficient to use. In addition I waited this camera for more than a year. But your 16-35mm shots are very convincing. Thank you in advance because I feel I see the light from end of tunnel. I think I will go for it with a 16-35mm. Best regards

    The battery life is better on the A7 IV most likely due to the lower resolution display and EVF. It's unlikely that anything else in the camera is causing a noticeable battery life difference during video recording due to the fact that they share the same processor and other components. Unless you were recording to SD on the A7 IV and CFExpress A on the A7sIII. Great video! Very informative! Let's hope these software features come to A7s III users!

    It crops because:
    1) not enough processing power for k to 4k in 4k60
    2) there is not enough resolution in 16:9 part of the sensor for pixel binning, which the a1 has
    (There needs to be 33.2mp in the 16:9 part for it to be able to pixel bin)
    3)its specifically 1.5x because now apsc lenses can be used.

    Cropped 4K 60 is a shame, but they had to protect the a7siii somehow. I'm not sure just removing 4K 120 would be enough, considering the camera other than that is pretty similar. Worst rolling shutter, but that never bothered me as I film pretty static. Not sure why every expects all the functionality of an A1 and A7Siii on a much cheaper camera?

    • @perseusarkouda
      @perseusarkouda 3 года назад +1

      In my opinion it would be better if instead of 33MP it would be again at 24MP (like a7iii) and have 4K 60p (for videoshooters), a more bright and detailed LCD screen (for both videoshooters and photographers) and faster fps burst speeds (for photographers). Sensors are quite expensive and I believe that would be possible as a tradeoff. But the marketing of MPs has made lots of other people and manufacturers considering that you can't have a new camera upgrade in lineup without a new sensor.
      Also I don't understand why to protect the a7Siii. It's a previous model in line and it's supposed to have better quality materials to qualify for it's price. If they manage to put out a better camera at a lower cost, they simply should do it and drop also the cost of the previous camera. Then release a7Siv at the current a7Siii's price. Even Appla does that and Apple isn't exactly pure. It's not ethical to hold back things that the camera is capable to do and we certainly shouldn't accept those things.

I'd be more interested in keeping the prosumer level customers happy than worrying about whether some prospective A7sIII customers decide to go for the AvIV instead.
