I’ve been a canon user all my life. Then I bought an R6 mk1 and it died of Error 70 at its first wedding. Sent it back, got a replacement. That died out of the box - same issue. So I got the money back and bought a Sony A7C for gimbal wedding video. After using that along with 2nd and 3rd cameras being canon M50 and 5D2, the A7C is incredible. So I bought two more. And today I just received a brand new A7IV for taking over primary video on the gimbal, with the Sony 24-105 f4 G OS. Hello from Kyiv Ukraine. Nice positive review. I have already decided to buy this camera in the new year. I noticed many people complaining on RUclips about the crop in 4K60 and how Sony has let people down and that this is a deal breaker. Really??? If these people were truely photographers or videographers then they would know that this is not a problem at all and do the 1.5 math and just change your lens to compensate for the crop. We generally use 4K60 for B roll so I do not see what the problem is. The grips never bothered me as I have a battery grip for each of my Sony cameras. I have the A7RIII A7III and A9II so I have already used the larger body for a while with the A9II. I will be buying the A7IV to replace my A9II and not the A7III.
Fx3 If you want video without overheating that's the camera. If you want photos/limited video the A7IV is the camera. Photos are great in both. A7IV comes with more sharpness. Using the 70-200mm Os2 both are phenomenal. But you got to shop according to your application your trying to shoot.
I’m thinking about whether to get the A6700 or the A7IV. What holds me back from the A7IV is that I have quite a few lenses that are APS-C. Do you think I should take a big step and switch to the A7IV, or since I have more APS-C lenses, should I stick to the APS-C line and go for the A6700? Or maybe waiting for A7V ?
Sony should have a Firmware Upgrade Program where you can purchase the option of full frame 60 for an upgrade price and an upgrade price to get rid of the rolling shutter. Yes, there would be an entry fee, but it would absolutely blow the competition out of the water and if you don't want those added features, just don't get the upgrades. Sony makes out with more profits and at the same time still protecting the "R" and "S" crowd.
@@wl5609 I actually contacted Sony about the possibility of upgrades to firmware in an "ala cart" way. They told me it may have some merit and will forward our conversation to the "proper department" for "review and possible implementation" ... who knows ?
Wow, how times have changed, 12MP not good for client work? The early Nikon D1 series had between 2.6 to 3.9MP, with a crop sensor and were the flagship cameras used by professionals in multiple industries. Some of those ended up on billboards across the world, I’m quite sure 12 MP will still work today for client work.
I remember doin alot with the nikon d70s (6MP) and we was pretty content with the print out of it ( no IG then ), you show off your work by PRINTING..plus, no Eye AF, racoon AF etc...yet keeper rate was high with that back buttion on AF-C.. Everything's changed now from the cameras to the super sharp plastic looking lenses ( lost all that organic look people try to reproduce in post now ).. well we go with the flow now
@@joshmcdzz6925 It’s a new age, the camera companies have to build for their new customers. We had film and has to make every shot count or as many as you could, from that 12, 24 or 36 roll. You had to get it right for development as there was not much you could do after the shot was taken. Not like today how you depend on the sensor to store the info and software to allow you to tweak to a look that in some case are not natural but pleasing to look at. You have to be skilled at editing, in addition to being a photographer. It’s a new age.
@@waynerm002 well said. Technology seems to have a heavy influence on photography and that's made certain art like paintings more appealing to the public. The art of photography has been skewed by technology which isn't a bad thing but the organic nature is lost. Fine art, paintings etc still have those real qualities..just like hip hop vs jazz or classical (electronic music vs the soul )..
Just got the A7IV and thought it was interesting to hear that 4K60 overheats in 20 minutes with the screen in. I know people were saying it will eventually overheat but haven't heard it was happening in that short of time. Where you able to do any testing on it? I had gotten rid of my Canon R6 which was an overheating beast but 4K60 with little crop still went to about 24 minutes before overheating. If you put it in crop mode you could get to the record limit of around 30 minutes. For the ease of seeing if you are recording there is an option to have a red frame go around the whole lcd screen. Will be easy to spot if your recording or not. Of course you need to be able to see the screen.
What?! No battery charger, unreal. The value for everything is less and less. I love the camera, I’m trying to decide between the R4 and 7/4. Mainly photography some vlogging videos. Portraits, animals landscapes and some skateboarding/sports. I love the high res but the hybrid seems like a better option.
Don't forget the tally lights on the FX3's monitor too. Really reassuring how many ways that camera lets you know you're recording. I agree though wished at least the record button received one.
You mentioned that it doesn’t come with a charger but can’t you just use the USB-C cord and plug that in to the camera to charge it? Maybe Sony was trying to cut costs because of supply shortages and rising materials cost, deeming it almost obsolete, in a way.
I’m sure that’s how they justify it. But how is that helpful on a shoot? Once a battery dies you plug in the camera? Include the charger for us with that price imo
Great review. Regarding the video tally lights , I saw on another video, you can change a setting and when you are in video record node there is a red frame around the image to signify recording. If they helps.
*I just bought my first camera (A7IV + 24mm F/1.4.* Do you have any video recommendations for learning the basics about Sony cameras? @@TareqASamra It seems fine. The background matters a lot. Plus spacing [how far away is the camera etc]. My background is horrible. I'm trying to buy a curtain or something to make it look better. Don't forget, you can always punch-in with APS-C button if your lens is too wide.

I like the look of the Talking Head shot. What kind of settings or color correcting did you do? It looks very cinematic to me or is that just how good the camera and lens is?
Didn't you have the canon R5 and if so how come you got rid? I have the A7iv or should I say I had it as it's on its way back to the shop. It felt cheaply made to me especially compared to a friend's R5. Thanks
I did, and sold to for the fx3 and now also the A7IV. Couldn’t be happier with my decision personally. No time limit, no overheating and no ibis wobble makes it a no brainer for how I use it but to each their own!
The video footage coming from the Sony fs7 4 is much sharper than the fx3. And in my opinion yes , the Sony A7 4 is a must. The best hybrid camera till now. 👍🇮🇳
@@JHawkWhat’s wrong with sharper? Just style? Or does it introduce artifacts or something? I feel like I want sharp as possible but I do product reviews. I feel like I want my products looking prestine like 3D renders.
Nice video!!!!Buddy, everything on point. I already have mine and is a beast so, I'm very happy with it. The drawbacks are not that bad, the rolling shutter unless you pan like a madman is fine. I'm coming from the APSC world and my A6300 is another beast for video and pics, the rolling shutter is awful but I've done even client work without noticing any rolling shutter when you edit. The 4K60 crop is a bummer but for people like me that have APSC lenses we can shoot for example with the Sigma 16mm in super 35mm and the crop won't be there. Therefore is just adapting to what this camera can gives us. I could understand not many people are in mine position and they may not have the APSC lenses but is just work your workflow around that feature. Anyway, those are my thoughts.Salutes from London n' keep up the good work!!!
Im in the same boat coming from the a6500 so to me/us this is a big upgrade regardless of the few downsides of it. I also never had a big problem with rolling shutter on the a6500 like people said they it did or overheating problems. And also i have the sigma 16mm so i cant wait to see how it is on the a7iv. I get mine in tomorrow!
@@TheFunnyCamGuy you will have a lot of fun buddy!! I already tried 4K60 with the 16mm and is very good!!Therefore, for people like us no big deal at all!! Awesome I’m going to get this camera once I figure out what lens I need for my type of videos. Any recommendations? Once I found out, I’m buying it all. Currently using iPhone I believe the video is 34mm equivalent but it’s a crop from 26mm I think so I’m wondering if that means my minimum focus distance seems closer than it is. Therefore I wonder if I should use my a7iv on crop mode so that I can continue to hold objects so close to the frame. I just don’t know
@@JHawk I mean it’s a pretty specific use case I think. My scene doesn’t change and neither does my lighting. My fear about zoom lens is that it will add size and price and once I find out what focal length works I’ll just end up sticking to it. I’m telling you my stuff isn’t dynamic at all as it’s not vlog or nature or anything of the sort just indoors studio.
I just bought the A7riii last month because it was 700 dollars off. But I really wanted the a7iv, so I'll probably buy this in the summer as a second body.
Tally lights - something we in video have taken for granted for decades, but can't anymore on hybrid cameras. All the more reason to still buy a camcorder in 2022.
@@JHawk For the time being, at least, and I hope to God they don't get discontinued because of the hybrid hype. Some of us in corporate/industrial/institutional video still need that affordable 15-to-20x optical lens reach when we're in situations too restricted or dangerous to use a hybrid camera (which, even with "all-in-one" zooms, may get you 10x at best). And no, we don't always have time to change lenses when we need that extra reach.
And yeah, also because of little things like tally lights, SDI out, TC IN/OUT, etc.... And how about the fact that with camcorders, the battery mounts externally, not internally, so you can put a larger battery on it if you want. Can't say the same about hybrid cameras, unless you attach a bottom battery grip, and then some cages won't fit the camera with the battery grip on. I can think of so many things you have to gerry-rig a hybrid or cinema camera to do the things that are self-contained in a camcorder (e.g., servo zoom). And I like the fact that mfrs. like Canon & Sony are making XLR mic input possible, but you think maybe they could also include a Multi-Function/Multi-Interface shoe on the top of the XLR unit as well, so it could pass through compatible wireless mic receiver signals (cough, Sony UWP!) *as well as* the 2 XLR mic inputs, so you could have a 4-channel audio system in the hybrid camera? Also a cold shoe on the XLR interface to mount an Atomos monitor-recorder. This could easily be done.
I don’t have a nice camera yet but I just wanted to weigh in on that record light issue. When my daughter was in high school gymnastics and I tried recording her on our camcorder at the time. I was told by officials to shut it down because the red light could cause a distraction to a gymnast. Not sure if that’s still a rule or how often it is enforced but it would be nice to not have any lights in a situation like that. Some feedback would be nice if you are recording yourself though. Thanks!
In my experience any camera that has a front facing tally light usually has the option to turn that one off. if not, then I guess it may be yet another situation where a bit of tape could come to the rescue!
Alrighty. So… I’ve contacted Sony. Just as they’ve fixed overheating issues with the A1 and many other models with firmware updates, they have been receiving reports and their production team should be working on it. This is not an official statement, but given their history of fixing these issues, I’m sure this will also be taken care of. In the meantime, this was their advice: 1. Change the auto power off temperature setting from “standard” to “high.” This is one we already know. 2. Turn on airplane mode so that it’s not drawing power constantly attempting to search for devices to pair with BT and NFC. 3. Turn the screen brightness down to the lowest setting. 4. Turn off proxy recording. 5. Turn off focus breathing compensation. Other tips I’ve seen around include: 1. Keeping the screen flipped out and away from the body (which we know, also not always ideal depending on your situation). 2. Leaving the battery door open (which we know, but may not be ideal). 3. Attach a lens on the camera instead of the body cap (heat can dissipate through the lens better than through the body cap). 4. Don’t cradle the entire body of the camera in your hands for a significant period of time going through the menus and setting up the camera. 5. Don’t play with it in bed (or any other location where it may be “suffocating” on a blanket, on a pillow, etc., just like you wouldn’t with a laptop). 6. Do not have the camera in video capture mode while going through your settings, as the sensor is currently programmed to pull power at all times in movie mode, creating heat. If you have the body cap on, are cradling it fully with both of your hands coming into contact and covering most of the camera body, sitting in bed resting the camera in your hands on the blanket that’s on your lap, and you’re in video mode; it will probably overheat. Lol However, the Sony representative I spoke to said “As of this time, there is no firmware update that will address it. This has been raised already to our product engineers.” And while he could not give me an official declaration that there is a firmware update coming, the answers to the rest of my questions gave me great confidence that their engineers are working on it, and that we can look forward to a firmware update that should fix these issues, just as they did with the A1, A7SIII, and A7III before this. So. I’d go far enough to say, hang on! The fix should be coming!
@@JHawk and then, of course, there’s the question of whether I should trust Sony’s representative. Lmao. There are two Somy cameras in my home, an A6000 and the A7IV. I have yet to see issues with either, but I haven’t used the A7IV yet (turned it on to play with settings quickly a couple of times). So… hopefully, they’re not just blowing smoke up my ass 🤣.
i have a sony a7s 3 for video but want to get a seperate camera for photography as the meg pixels doesn't cut it, would you recommend a74 or a73 to save $$
Im nit-picking for sure but there's something ever so slightly more cinematic of the FX3 footage I think its in the contrast... got my a7 iv last week so nice to see your thoughts on it.. Also really like the colour In your vids..
Mine overheated with the high temp setting in a mild room after shooting 4K30 in Slog3 10bit 422 with a 720proxy for about 45min just the camera, I was told that the SD card could be the problem I’m using 128gb sandisk pro V30 I heard V60 or 90 will improve temp control
I'm hoping they potentially add 4k 60 uncropped in a firmware update to boost sales down the line as it's the same processor in the a7s3 and should technically be capable of it unless there is some weird pixel binning or something other that doesn't allow it. Or external recording for 4k 60 uncropped in the future which should be more than possible other than sony not wanting to cannibalize their higher-end models but I don't think this will do that.
Overheating for any professional is a deal breaker. Ive had more stress over this than any other issue. Sucks because I need a photo camera as well as a 2nd video camera.
I didn’t know that auto white balance wasn’t so easy as other models and the frame rate being low. But, other than that this is an easy buy. You can’t go wrong with a formula that has been tried and true. If it ain’t don’t fix it. But, we are now so picky that we will complain about insect autofocus not being perfect. These are luxury problems. 😂
Need to call something out about overheating You say at ~ 7:40 that as long as the swivel is out, that it won’t overheat. UNTRUE! My Sony a7 IV overheated in 60 F (cool, interior) with swivel screen OUT. I’m sending my camera back to B&H
I just bought the A7IV last week but wanted body only. I got the last one in Vancouver but it came with a lame kit lens. I'm using this camera to vlog my move to Mexico in Feb and can't decide on a lens. I'm considering the 20m f1.8 but wondering if it'll be wide enough. The only other option seems to be 14m f1.8 but that might have too much distortion? I like fast primes for versatility with stills. Any suggestions? Thanks..♥️
Yo congrats! I would not go with the 14. The 20 is prob what I would choose if you want a prime, but the 16-35 is the best for vlogging imo but it’s expensive. Not much more than the 14 tho. But for a prime and budget? I’d go 20 🤙🏻
I bought the a7iv few months ago, and it’s been hard getting a super sharp images with my 28-70 g master lens! I use the lens on my old a7iii and no issues. Anyone else seeing issues with less than expected sharpness in images with the a7iv?. Even considering selling mine!
I'm really glad I didn't settle for this camera and got the R6 for my first full frame, I literally only shoot photos and some video if I think its worth it. But the down sides about the photo portion on this camera were too significant such as the slower FPS when shooting uncompressed raw 5 fps really? Whilst the R6 can get 12 fps uncompressed raw granted it's a smaller resolution but come on its almost 2022 and can't get better results with a 33MP sensor and some new tech? It's probably really great for portraits and landscapes but for a do all, it's not a do all for me the R6 comes back around as the do all to me.
@@wl5609 I have no idea, I only shoot photos on it, other than that it's perfect. I understand the trend is for mirrorless fullframes or DSLR style mirrorless cameras to have both high quality photo and video but for me I'd just get a camera that does primarily video and one stills. I like how companies are expanding and making hybrid cameras but for me it's not necessary, the video had good quality especially the stability when paired with an L lense.
@@drpork1360 I seriously considered the R6 for my big move to Mexico in Feb but ultimately went with the A7IV. Both cameras are fantastic, we can't lose. Canon is probably top of line in most classes but I'm really impressed with how Sony has performed with their A7 series and the fully articulating screens. The features and megapixels really is enticing to me, but only having 10fps, and only in compressed raw is a bit of a killer for me. I’m looking to getting into shooting some more fast paced stuff as my kids are getting into sports. I was debating between a7iv and r6, but looking into moving to the Sony eco system from canon, the cost off set I could probably go ahead and get the r5 instead. Get fps and megapixels in one camera.
Can upgrading to FF 4K 60p be accomplished in firmware? I understood it could not be...🤔
@@wl5609 I actually contacted Sony about the possibility of upgrades to firmware in an "ala cart" way. They told me it may have some merit and will forward our conversation to the "proper department" for "review and possible implementation" ... who knows ?
Their upgrade program is called Sony A1, FX3, or A7SIII 😂

Only couple things that stink are the rolling shutter and crop 4K 60 other than that, for the price it’s pretty nice and I’m excited for it!
It’s a beast man!
@Azharuddin Saikh On paper it's better than A7 III and I had A7 III and haven't noticed anything bad.
Haha that’s amazing!
This is why I started to shoot film at 17!
Overheats in less than 20 minutes shooting 4K 24 with screen open

Don't forget the tally lights on the FX3's monitor too. Really reassuring how many ways that camera lets you know you're recording. I agree though wished at least the record button received one.
You can turn that on with this tho! Just fyi :)
Just bought the LUT for this. Can't wait to try it when I get the camera! Great content.
It should work great!! As always might have to adjust a bit for your own space but it’ll get you close. Appreciate you!
Sadly, my Sony Alpha 1 does NOT have tally lights either!

Which one is the best for video capture?
Huh? Which what lol
I just don’t know
Wish there was a one size fits all answer but so many variables it’s impossible. I suggest a zoom lens to give you some options 🤘🏻
@@JHawk I mean it’s a pretty specific use case I think. My scene doesn’t change and neither does my lighting. My fear about zoom lens is that it will add size and price and once I find out what focal length works I’ll just end up sticking to it. Tally lights - something we in video have taken for granted for decades, but can't anymore on hybrid cameras. All the more reason to still buy a camcorder in 2022.
Camcorders are a thing? Haha
What lens are you using in this video ?
16-35 I believe

I don’t have a nice camera yet but I just wanted to weigh in on that record light issue. When my daughter was in high school gymnastics and I tried recording her on our camcorder at the time. I was told by officials to shut it down because the red light could cause a distraction to a gymnast. Not sure if that’s still a rule or how often it is enforced but it would be nice to not have any lights in a situation like that. Some feedback would be nice if you are recording yourself though. Thanks!
For sure! Or the option to just turn them off then 👍🏻
In my experience any camera that has a front facing tally light usually has the option to turn that one off. if not, then I guess it may be yet another situation where a bit of tape could come to the rescue!
Alrighty. So… I’ve contacted Sony. Just as they’ve fixed overheating issues with the A1 and many other models with firmware updates, they have been receiving reports and their production team should be working on it. This is not an official statement, but given their history of fixing these issues, I’m sure this will also be taken care of.
In the meantime, this was their advice:
Other tips I’ve seen around include:
Lol
However, the Sony representative I spoke to said “As of this time, there is no firmware update that will address it. This has been raised already to our product engineers.”
And while he could not give me an official declaration that there is a firmware update coming, the answers to the rest of my questions gave me great confidence that their engineers are working on it, and that we can look forward to a firmware update that should fix these issues, just as they did with the A1, A7SIII, and A7III before this.
So. I’d go far enough to say, hang on! The fix should be coming!
Wow good to know!!
