@@philipsbrett I know eh! I’ve only edited one project in Resolve and this second one is about getting some more efficiencies with things like that and power bins to manage commonly used assets like titles, zooms, and bits of foley.
I thought I knew Resolve, but these 11 tips were all new to me! This is exactly what I love about your channel and exploring softwares in general. There’s always something new to learn and it’s so refreshing to see content like this when everyone else is just buzzing about AI. This kind of video really ignites my passion for the work we do as creators. Thank you for the amazing video Dunna! Love your work ❤️
Thanks Dunna, you're always very helpful. Couple of things I like to do based on your tips, maybe some of us are not aware of it : 0:59 What I like to do is create my folder structure in the finder of my computer (Project name> Footage/Audio/Music/logos...) and drag the main folder directly on the "Master" name, not underneath it. This way, everything is imported using the same folder structure I created and I don't have to create new folders in Resolve beforehand. 10:23 Something that really works well for me is to select my Audio and Footage folders, right click on it and select Auto Sync Audio. Surprisingly it syncs all the audio and I rarely have to select all the files that I want to sync. It's a great time saver.
I have actually come across a few of these tips, like the checkboard background setting, but only because I watch too many YT videos about Resolve. I do favor your videos though, because of your style in organizing and delivery. I have less questions after watching the way you lay them out and the examples you include resonate more. And this video is up to your usual quality. Thank you!.
@@dunnadidit I think there´s also a "ducking" effect in Davinci. I´m coming from music production so "side chaining" is something I´m familiar with. Basically you set a trigger (in this case your spoken voice) and you tell it to reduce the volume of the music track whenever you talk, automatically. There usually is some way of fine tuning the amount of volume reduction.
I've been using the software for almost 2 years and I still learned a few new things or was reminded of things that I knew but stopped using for some reason. Please do more of these! 😄
These are great tips! I love being able to switch audio with the adjustments still in tact! Fantastic!!!! And the caption/text presets! So good! Thank you!
Thanks, Dunna. In the past, without the checkerboard background, I just created a solid color layer that was bright pink or something and put it as the lowest video level (i.e., video track 1). Then I could easily see where the tracks above it were not covering the full frame.
Thanks for this Dunna, I think I found 2-3 tips that I could use now. 1 question: how do you manage your files with Davinci, is it creating a folder on a project basis?
Glad it was helpful! Yeah I have a system for organizing more in the computer operating system more so than in Davinci itself. Every project gets a folder with a set of folders inside for different types of media.
Great tips!! We actually had the same "first tip". IDK how I didn't know about the option click for the curves. that is going to help me a ton. Have you noticed the resync media bins being buggy at all? It works about 60-70% of the time for me. But still stoked davinci is working on it! I think a great feature would be like the "Auto Backup" where the user would set a time parameter and which folders and it would resync that folder. Great video! Great tips! Looking forward to more.
These tips come in very handy, thanks. Maybe i have a tip for moving the video on the transform overlay. You can lock the oposite axis while holding shift (on pc). So if you like to only move the x-axis, hold shift and start dragging left or right. As long as you hold shift, you can not move the y-axis
hey, I'm newbie in davinci. Maybe you can say that you press exactly where you are talking about replace clip, more precisely, I cannot make dots appear on the audio track that allow you to adjust the volume. I use Windows. Thank you
I got so excited to hear about the Resynching Media files feature that I paused your video to try it with my Music folders. Alas, it didn't work after several tries. Then I returned to the video, frustrated. Immediately you said, it only works for video files now. Damn! That would be such a cool feature to have. Thanks for the tips and the video!
On Tip 5, why do you use volume automation versus maybe using the ducker? Is it simply because as you say, you want more control of the volume by spots in the audio clip. Great video. Thanks.
That’s part of it for sure, I just cant get the ducker to do exactly what I want it to do. I like my volume to dip a bit in advance of the actual scene change sometimes and you’re limited on controls for that. Then I also like to keep the volume low sometimes in pauses in the dialogue and the ducker doesn’t like that. And finally, the issue I usually have with a ducker is that if it gets 90% of the things right and 10% wrong, you kind of have to start from scratch and I find that very frustrating. But it definitely works from time to time! I’m just so used to nearly 20 years of volume automation that it doesn’t seem like a big deal to me to go through that process.
@@dunnadidit Thank you so much for your explanation. I surely don't have that many years of experience with video production, and, it do it more as a hobby. Thanks again.
Cool TIP 2, but if I may add something. If you want your entire timeline to have the black bars, you can go to "Timeline" and choose "Output Blanking". Then you don't have to add the cropping on each clip. Ty for your videos, they got me into Davinci Resolve 3 years ago and was a huge help!
Haha I wondered if someone would bring that up! That’s a great tip for that specific use for sure! I didn’t really mean for it to be a specific example of the “cinematic crop” it just kind of went there by accident lol. Usually what I use the crop overlay for is chopping off the parts of an image or screen recording that I don’t want shown. Like the url bar of a screen recorded web browser or something like that. But output blanking is a great tool too!
Yo Dunna! thanks for the tips. For a music track and a dialogue track, using an "Ducker" or a compressor with a side-chain is a cleaner way (less noticeable). And you can put it on the whole track instead of the file, so it works the same no matter the track you put as music. Just a bonus tip! 😜
Great tip! I’ve never had much luck getting a fucker or a side chained compressor to sound how I want it to so I generally revert to doing it manually. There are little things like a bit of anticipation of the dialogue starting/stopping and the ability to keep the volume low in gaps in the dialogue at times that it just doesn’t do for me. But hey, if it works for you then I say keep doing it! Thanks for adding your tip!
@@dunnadidit You are welcome. And yes it takes tome time fiddling the numbers (attack, hold, release, etc.) but when you got it, you have for always :)
Thanks for the tips! The one related to audio keyframes - it might be a good solution to set up audio ducking the way you like it and then set it as a pre-set to reuse every time? :)
Unfortunately, I haven't been able to get the audio ducking to work how I would want it to. But that might just be because I am super picky and have almost 20 years of audio engineering experience behind me haha.
@dunnadidit Don't think you mentioned it but you can use the transform overlay to help you key frame. Start the first key frames for what you want changed ie zoom, position etc. then jog the clip to the next point then transform the clip and the keyframes generate on that new part of the clip

In Tip 5 on the audio track how are you able to create a couple of points? When I click on my audio track with Opt + Click, do not see the points being created. Pl explain
It’s a bit tricky, you have to make sure you’re opt+click ing right on the volume automation line. Once you get used to it, it’s not bad, but at first it can be a bit tough to find.
I'd really like an option to keep the picture in the frame when moving and zooming, it would be so easy to implement and save us lots of time and errors!
Hi, I have a short video that includes people talking together with a song mix. I currently have DAVINCI 18.6. My question is, in version 19.1 is it possible to remove the song and leave only the talking in the video? Thanks
Regarding Tip 5: another (I think a better) way is to use buses and add the automation there. This way you can reposition the clip however you want without having to readjust the timing of your automation. :)
This is a great point! I wish that audio automation was a little more user friendly in DVR (coming from other audio editing software like Pro Tools) but this is definitely a solid way to make this happen!

In Resolve 19.1 there is now an option to Automatically Resync Media Files, so when you add media to a folder, Resolve will automatically add it to the bin!
Tip number 4 - You could just used a sidechain compressor to duck the music while you are talking. If you do this, no audio automation needed. (Yes I'm an audio geek)
