I have a question , what if you have a person ( skin tone obviously ) AND a bright source of light in the same frame like maybe a billboard or some Led light in the back or something. Would you set your zebras to 100% I’m assuming ? Since the light source is brighter ?
Excellent question, William. I'm going to pin this one as I think it will help some people and is something that I could have clarified in the video. I'd always prioritize the skin tone in the shot for exposure. The only time I wouldn't do that is if I wanted a silhouette shot or something, but generally, if a person is the subject I'd get their skin tone exposed.
@@seandewispelaerethat’s what I meant ! @@Steven_John3 I work in marketing for golf courses. That lens is going to be a game changer in getting great shots without having to be right up on the golfers. It looks incredible for wildlife as well!
For SLog3 you want to look at a histogram and either expose to the left/for the shadows, for the highlights, or for the shadows or highlights. The problem is that you can move shadows into the noise with log profiles. This means that it's log, so it's more compressed, and this means your blacks are closer to the noise floor, and when you uncompressed the log the noise turns into the 10s and 20s of the Ansel Adams exposure chart.
I love that you covered this! I’m pretty new to all of this but just throwing it out there that slog and rec709 differs by -10. So if you’re light skinned your zebra target in rec709 could be 70 but in slog it would be 60. :)
Thanks, Travis Ah, yes, I think that is exactly why (for the 70 example) it has worked so well for me to use the same exposure values for both log or non-log profiles. It essentially over-exposes the LOG by 10% which, arguably, is enough to leverage the dynamic range. At lease for me, exposing exactly to the values in the chart via zebras has proven to be consistent regardless of log or non-log

I'm confused about the dual baseline iso. I understand that 800 and 3200 have the lowest noise because they are the baseline. But I am not sure why you highlight 10000 and 20000 as having low noise as well, and how those numbers relate to 800 and 3200 .
I love to record with S-Cinetone, because it’s very practical and fast, otherwise with s-log 3 is not easy to make a perfect exposure every time in different situation… but S-Cinetone on my a7iv have a lot of noise. I’m thinking to switch to a7s iii 😢

The problem is that you can move shadows into the noise with log profiles. Hi question, i shoot on s-log3 and the 2nd base iso is 3200. If i want to use zebras and have to change the iso it wont be at its base anymore which makes the footage grainy again?

This is by far the best video I’ve seen on low light, cheers for this!! (Side note) where can I find the best low light settings for an fx3? Can you make a video on this?
Thanks that means a lot to me
I believe the FX3 and the ZV-E1 have the same sensor which would make this video and overall settings helpful: ruclips.net/video/cGbgdPKHp1E/видео.html
Thanks!
Oh my god) I have never tried to add Liquify jawline in photoshop +1000 percents. And now I can see why
super cool tip thx bro
Sean what app are you using to control menu from your phone on camera? ty.
The Sony Creator app works well
May I have the link of the music in the background please?
Sure thing, I use Audiio (audiio.com/partner?oid=1&affid=931) and used a few different tracks in this edit, but the one in the beginning is: Andriy Mashtalir; BreatheSlow Motion
Thank you for the advice about using Zebras.
No doubt - game changer for sure
This might be a dumb question, but will this work for photos as well? I shoot rodeos in primarily poor lighting situations and I'm struggling tremendously with the lighting.
Not a dumb question at all
In short, yes. I wouldn’t use any picture profiles like SLOG3 like what is slightly referenced in the video for photos, but using zebras to expose and some of the editing tips given should help a ton
The dual ISO is a video-only feature as far as I know, but I can test that once I get back to the office
@@seandewispelaere Thank you so much! I really appreciate it. I've been fighting with this camera for months now Lol I follow the exposure triangle but still seem to have issues. Thank you for getting back to me so quickly!
@@RachaelAtRandom No problem and yea the dual iso stuff won't be all that applicable to photos, but this video (and the part 2 at the end) might help you a lot with dialing the exposure: ruclips.net/video/afu3WS3yjgc/видео.htmlsi=e8FA3yWP69sP5C-I
Dude, nice one, you just earned a sub, can I ask, those SD Custom LUTs, do the work on Davinci?.... Cheers man.
Thank you, much appreciated. I am not sure on that, but let's do this...send me an email (seansglasslife@gmail.com) and I'll send you the LUTs on the house and then if you could let me know about Davinci that'd be great so that I know for future requests. They should work though ad they are .cube files. Look forward to hearing from you
Came for the impressive gigachad jawline, stayed for the content. Love the explanation !
Ha, I've heard that one a lot more recently...maybe it's my lighting angle. Anyways, thank you and glad this one landed for you.
@@seandewispelaere Could be haha ! With pleasure, and keep up the good work 😉
Do u have a baseline iso chart for the a6700?
Hey Kevin, I'm working on an a6700 low light video for the near future that will have a guide - stay tuned
Omg cant wait! Ty!
I'm a noob, but I'm going to try this. Thanks!
Let me know how you get on with it
Does the Zebra method work in daytime settings as well? That seems like a pretty east method to remember.
Absolutely it does, Sammy. I use it all of the time.
hi your fonts in the thumbnail are amazing. Can you pls tell what's the fonts name?
would this apply to the first sony a7?
Maybe some of it?
Amazing video bro,
How do you screenrecord your camera like that?
Thanks, that means a lot. I use the Atomos Ninja V
Subscription done 🥰
My man!
Great content, thank you, do you recommend recording with slog3 at night? Complying with the dual base iso or it's better without a profile or hlg3 with the sony a7IV
Hi Sean. Constrictive feedback, great video I like the different perspectives you film from. Like the one at 31 seconds. You keep to the point and use the right amount “magic- souse- with effects and sound”
Thank you for the cool video will try the steps with family videos. Keep the great videos coming. You are a one stop for improvement
Btw off topic I posted in your video a question. Dose your A7 4 reset pic count after 09999 to 00000
Hey man! Thank you for the feedback, that is incredibly valuable to me. Sorry I missed that comment. I have no clue ha I format my cards like once a week. I do think there is a setting to change the file name and counter though?
@@seandewispelaere I will figure it. Keep the great videos coming man. One more thing about your videos that your videos very. You know how to keep the message clean and clear. For example your 3 point. I have never touched or thought about colour grading. It was simple enough for me to test it with non log videos.
For still yes the counter resets, don’t know about video but can’t think what else would happen?
@@sh8736 thanks for replay. it is strange, but it is what is
Man, false color on bmpcc is just such a game changer compared to the zebras.
Can't say I disagree with the value of false color
Confuse between A7R iV and A7 IV ...
Should i go for old machine or new features?
thanks bro👍
Thank you
Do you have issues with overheating
Nope, I haven't but typically just film in 4k 24. I've heard some issues at 4k 60 for extended record times.
how would you do the zebra method on a live event, in studio seems simple not sure, how i can do this in a live setting, im new to video in general, hope you can answer
im a bit confuse, and im also new to these, i wish to record night/low light events, how do i effectively record, i understand that Slog creas noise in log light, and what i have search is that when talking about dual iso baseline, its only leans towards slog and cine profile, I was recommended to use rec709, so how does Dual baseline iso, comes into play, please can you provide clarification
I’ve found it to work in most situations including live events. Expose to the skin tone and change if the lighting drastically changes but yea it works well. Hope this helps 🤙
@@seandewispelaere hi Sean thank you for taking the time to respond my questions means a lot, just so I know I understood, when it comes to a Live event with low light, i should use the Zebra method on skin tones, and you're saying I can record in low light with flashes of dj lights with Slog? but how would you fix noise? or should i convert slog to rec709 and then add a Lut?
@@xosemusic Correct and the light flashes will be ok. I'd try and expose the skin tone when the brightest light is on them. Noise will come down to how high your ISO is and dropping the blacks/shadows in post. Absolutely SLOG3 and I'd just use the Sony conversion LUT as the baseline.
