It's a black eye on the Maldives, one that will be here for all to see for years. There's no reason for them to be upset you broke the spear gun, unless they were planning to sell it. They thought it was 'theirs'. And the boat collision is surprisingly poor seamanship for professionals who do that every day.

"the officials don’t define all Maldivians" but they are the "face" of your country, first impressions count, especially when they become only impressions (an experience like this will cause people to leave and go to the next country), you need to let your tourism board know that that your officials are undoing all their work the moment people arrive, and quickly before you have no tourism left (unless tourism is not important to your economy, but I think it might be).

That spear gun wasn't so much a spear gun as it was a token of being bestowed an honor by the Indonesian men who gave it to you. The TSA said we couldn't take it on the plane. I stomped on it crushing and braking the lighter. Boston airport 2010. I didn't think about the too large bottle of mouthwash. Still unopened. The Tub Stacker said its contraband. I said I may as well as take a swig before you take it. She batted my hand, screamed, You can't do that, and threatened to arrest me if I opened the bottle.
A gentleman in line with me said he had arrived from visiting friends in Russia, was catching a connecting flight home to Minnesota. His friends had given multiple small jars of homemade cavier. Even those each jar was less than the size allowed on airlines, the Thuggush Stupid Asses moved to confiscate them. So he walked over to a bin to pour out the cavier so he could at least keep the decorative jars. They arrested him. I heard mention of terrorist threat.
Another passenger was told to go back to the end of a long line because he hadn't removed his belt soon enough. He too was threatened with arrest if he didn't comply. He protested he'll likely mis his connecting flight. They replied, Too bad, that's your problem.

Framing square, 300' tape measure, ball of string with a plumb bob & a few other odds and ends. They took my small plumb bob because they considered it a weapon. I had them call their supervisor and after she considered all the ways I could use the plumb bob to take over the plane, allowed me to take it in the bag. Yes!!! I wish more parents saw it this way! Instead we have a culture and society that doesn’t even know who their kids are because they don’t know how to be around their kids and most have gotten so far removed and replaced by that role that they can’t connect with them and therefore think it’s too hard to be around them so much that they don’t even want to be.

It’s been a while since I have commented but I can’t sit on my hands anymore. That was a disgusting display by those custom officers. Ben, you are too damn nice. Call them out, write to their Consulate General. I remember the episode when you got that spear gun and the look on you face was priceless. Make it a short stay and spend as little money as you can. Too hell with them.

Indeed, until countries and officials such as this learn they need to have and only implement, proportionate and necessary laws, they should be reminded of the damage they do. Compare this to checking in to some of the Caribean islands, friendly, one stop stamp.

I remember that episode too. Ben was like Ralphie in A Christmas Story opening that official Red Ryder, carbine action, 200-shot, range model air rifle, with a compass in the stock and this thing that tells time. He was so happy and grateful for such a gift.

You guys are awesome. Ben you have taught me so much about how to deal with fishermen. I think you spirt is phenomenal. Often time when we aren’t centered we make not the wisest of decisions. You guys were tire and absolutely exhausted, lol. Take it as a lesson for the next rodeo with customs. Sorry to see that happen to the boat though. That’s the real story. That dent could have been so much worse. I’d recommend that you insist that the don’t tie to your vessel in the future. Help them to board safely. Chin up! You guys made it through. Just a paragraph in your book….that’s all. Stay safe!👊🏿💯😎

Should not have declared it. If there is a next time take it apart and put the wood in your tool box with some other wood you keep on board for repairs. Then put the other parts in with tools and hardware. Live and learn.

10 days???? Even after you have already filed papers?? I'm so sorry you two had to go through this. I've been on the resorts on the other islands in Maldives and everyone is very welcoming, but never had to deal with the officials in Male except the airport, and even then, they are not happy at what they do. I hope the next few weeks, you guys can finally get to enjoy Maldives and meet the locals that are much nicer than the officials.

As a fan of you and other sailing RUclipsrs, it's so frustrating to see what's been going on over the last couple of years. I don't know why or how Covid has changed the world, but many of these countries are OUT OF CONTROL for no reason (Tonga, Maldives, New Zealand, Fiji....). It's crazy. And it's frustrating to the point where I think you should all go to the Caribbean until the world gets back to normal. And none of you want to badmouth or criticize the countries (understandably). But I'm no longer watching videos where sailors defend fascist and ridiculous things. I'm so happy you guys are being honest about your feelings and presenting the facts as ridiculous as they are. And now a war just makes things worse. Get out of questionable parts of the world in terms of cruising, and go somewhere free.

I am South African and have travelled extensively in Africa and The Indian Ocean Islands not as a yachtie but individual businessperson and tourist. The islands East of Africa all have this type of officialdom except Seychelles now. It’s a great friendly place and while officials are tough they are understanding. Kenya, Mombasa is also good, but be cautious of Tanzania, especially Zanzibar. Don’t think of Camores, give them a wide berth. Also stay clear of the Northern half of Mozambique, there’s a war there. South of Beira is Okay. Once you reach the coast of South Africa you fine. We friendly nice people and our officials are used to yacht people. Our seas are quite rough so Good luck..

Indeed the legal industry is strangling the world. The horror is the steady increase in their power, the vindictiveness, and the lack of accountability for the damage they do. Those who draft, prepare, approve, implement legislation are the most quilty.

@16:05 In a few countries it is not "just doing their job", but "legal" harrasment. There are a few countries in the world that are unfriendly towards foreigners in general or against foreigners of specific regions or cultures or religions of the world. This can get reinforced with underpaid, low educated employees in powerful positions, like policeman, soldiers, coast-guards etc. especially in poor countries.

It's great that you share your ups and downs and really take us on a true journey through what it's really like in boating life. However, I imagine sometimes it's even harder than what you see in your videos. But it seems like the ups and the downs balance out.
