Advise from a professional boatbuilder, get a company to do a NDT ultrasonic scan from under the tunnel, it will show any rot, voids or delamination between outer skin and core, they should be able to do it from a dinghy under the boat. NDT (non destructive testing) much cheaper than start chopping the boat up, if you find more rot then its possible to fix from underneath, tunnel is not a high visible area so easy to do the cosmetic repair afterwards, done a few upside down vacuum bag repair on catamaran tunnel in the past for the exact same reason

Hi, i have the same boat as you, a 2003, and i had a leak from the screws holding the helm console to the floor, it was leaking in the compartment under the helm where you found rot, you might want to seal those from the top, lagoon ‘’forgot’’ to do it. I accessed it from the round access port under the helm. Hang in there, everything can be fixed with duck tape and vise grips, and the occasionnal can of epoxy 🤓

Hey guys. We have been following you from the beginning, a great story! Really sorry that you hit this speed bump and are so off the beaten path when it happened. I have been in the boat repair business for 45 years so have replaced lots of core materials. First, remember that the core you are removing is what makes the panel stiff so do what you can to avoid loss of the original shape. PVC foam cores are popular due to not being organic but the compression strength of end grain balsa is actually a lot higher, nearly 2000 PSI! There are actually still really good reasons for using balsa. Keep it dry and it lasts forever but every skin penetration must be well sealed. I see people are worried about the fiberglass dust and yes do wear a respirator but oddly while polyester and fiberglass is miserable to get on you, it is normally benign. Watch out for some of the epoxies though, even just skin exposure can be bad news... Best to you guys. J&J

May the heart and the strength of another quiet you in the darkest of night.
May the future always bring more delight and wonderment then the yesterdays.
May your heart and passions always rule the way and never get lost in the hurry of life.
May you see the world through the eyes of the child you once were, if at least once a day.
May you never fear exploring who you truly are and meant to be. You come from love.

May your pains or fears be turned to compassion for others.
May you dance to the universal music we all hear when we listen, with joy in your heart.

We stopped and saw family and friends. We are going up the backroads in America and we are not stopping for a few months, but when we do, we have planned to do day trips all around us. Happy that you are making such good progress replacing the balsa. Once that foam is glassed it you should get a lot of rigidity, probably more than before. I feared you would have to tear out more of the interior cabinetry in order to get to it. My concern is whether you have found the water ingress. You speculated it might be the cockpit drains. Was it? Although the foam does not rot in the same way as balsa it would not be good to have an un-located leak. All the best.

    • @ZoonCrypticon
      @ZoonCrypticon 2 года назад

Could it also be condensed water that caused the rot, since they traveled through tropical regions and the high humidity could condense due to interior climatization?

Never drill thru a wet area like that for anything. Use resin and glass to fasten something or at least use a butyl type of sealent on top of the screw and be sure to check its seal regularly. Things are looking up CHEERS AND FAIR WINDS Steve h.

Took out the seats, carpet, half the dash. Ended up being the sunroof drain dripping onto the rubber grommet where the hood release passes from inside to outside. A small tiny hole in the rubber was literally filling the interior of the car with water. I removed almost 3 gallons of water. Had about 60 hours into that job. Really enjoy the videos! Hello Ashley and Ben, what a bitter sweet episode, how beautiful are the Seychelles, and Willa’s adorable little hair do and dress. Your message at the end should make many Canadians proud, your words had more meaning I believe were not just directed by a good man in his boat alone, but humanity.. keep sharing your world, our world, that’s why I loved your Chanel from the get go. Cultures. Best wishes, time for a few swims, meals and enjoy your family before departure. ✨🐨🌿

I agree, that boat should not have done that, it was a design flaw. I don't think the repair is going to hold either. But, nobody likes a Negative Nelly...

Having studied aerospace engineering and materials science since the early 1980s, THIS SHOULD NOT EVER BE HAPPENING NOR HAPPEN TO ANYONE EVER AGAIN!!!
Seriously: We actually totally, thoroughly, and incontrovertibly eradicated ALL these problems some 50 years ago. If your post-1970's boat is falling apart, SUE THE BASTARDS for either FAILING or REFUSING to implement the very large number of longevity measures we provided the industry back then.

Just a little FYI...I am a building/drywall/plaster contractor here in Maine USA and I'll tell you from experience that I've personally gone through dozens of multi tools!! The best one I've found yet is a Dewalt multi tool!! I as a rule don't care for that brand but I had no other choice to buy one an its been almost a year and its still going strong! Best of luck and much love from the coast of Maine USA 🇺🇸 ❤

The dedication you both show reminds us of our own family. Its so nice to see like family’s push forward in the toughest of times. We’ve been following your journey since day one & believe we are ready to join the Patrion club. We don’t really understand how it works but will research it tomorrow so we can also show our support.

Godspeeds , having said that following rotting balsa core in a cat like yours is tedious to say the least , having said that the best way to fix it is to follow it and replace the balsa with a mix of clean sawdust and resin , it's heavier but much stronger than any foam , the reason you don't buy wooded cored expensive boats is just that , you buy foam cored or solid

Ben, Balsa Core has been used for as far back as I can remember and I have been sailing for over half a century. The advantages are light weight and the strength in sandwich construction when the fiberglass remains water tight and properly sealed. The problem however is once the seal has been broken humidity and condensation set in and delamination begins. If caught in time the areas can be dried out and sealed and last for many more years down the road. If left untreated however your boat can literally begin to fall apart. When people ask why does one boat cost $300,000 and another boat similar in size costs $1,000,000 I usually reply, the devil is in the details and in boat terms this comes down to solid heavily layered glass versus sandwich construction, the engine(s), the rigging, solid interior woods versus laminates, joiner work, wire harnesses, and so many more things. I feel terrible that you guys are going through this especially since this is NOT just a pleasure craft but your home. West Systems have some great products to handle such jobs. Feel free to ask any questions, I am here to answer them if I can help. Peace to you guys, hang in there.
