    In most instances, it's not only because the consumer is not using a well fitted boat cover, but it also has to do with how it's cleaned and what products are used. Vinyl manufacturers will tell you that mild soap and warm water are best. Harsh chemicals eat away at the UV protectant coating, thus causing discoloration, hardness and cracking much earlier than if cared for properly.

    Marine vinyl might last slightly longer but all vinyl and rubber starts to deteriorate after it’s manufactured. I learned from someone else about 303 Aerospace spray. It puts the oils and UV inhibitors back in the material. I’ve had old tools with rubber cords and strain reliefs that looked like they were going to need replaced soon. Sprayed them down and left them overnight and good as new. Never had to replace them.

      @@georgeburns7251 I think it’s snake oil. They also advertise “uv protection” yet multiple channels have confirmed it offers basically zero uv protection. Unless it protects from uv degradation in some other way, I think they’re lying about that. It’s possible uv degradation evaporates the plasticizers and oils and the product just puts them back in, but I highly doubt it, it’s probably just silicone in water that makes plastic/vinyl/rubber look good for a few days before ultimately just drying up and doing nothing for protection or longevity.

    Because I’ve been [ relentlessly ] researching a particular thing, I’ve noticed that the evidence shows the auto industry ( particularly off road ) markets marine vinyl as a weather / waterproof solution ( as with marine grade audio ) - to yahoos that enjoy mudding and, adventure-seeking, overlanders.

      Hello Vlad, What I think is I never use any protectants at all. I think it is a waste of money. Just keep your stuff clean. All materials age no matter if protectants are used. • @oldschoolautoupholstery
      @oldschoolautoupholstery  Год назад

      Hello Summer, You are so welcome! I am sorry to say that there is not. Leather is a natural fiber that degrades over time, just like we do. Hehe What kills leather mostly is moisture, so avoid getting it wet. (Remember Oj's leather gloves?) Second is any exposure to the environment hot or cold. Avoid the sun. The best environment is an enclosed garage. Any product for leather is a scam, save your money. 40 years ago, "Armor All" was a killer because it contained silicone that clogged up the pores of the leather and it would dry up quickly. I hope we all can handle the truth. Please keep liking and watching!

      Hello JRv, Leather is only better in the short term as it also ages the same as auto vinyl. I would never use leather for outdoor applications as moisture will kill it quickly. The aftermarket trusted brands of vinyl do have superior characteristics. If you spend an extra $90 on a job for marine get 15 years of use instead of 10 years with a non-marine vinyl, is that not worth the extra cost?
      I find the majority of problems come from very large companies who order custom vinyl because of the volume they do. They can request mold & mildew, and UV chemicals to be reduced on their custom order, to save $2-3/yard.

    All these poor armatures listing to this video probably selling non marine grade vinyl now. 650 hours is mid grade marine vinyl. Good marine vinyl has over 1,000 hours of UV Protection plus mildew prevention that automotive grade vinyl does not have. The seats you're showing are obviously over 20 years old. Additionally some manufactures use very cheap vinyl that does not last long.
