    Have been following you guys as you are living our dream. We got as far as buying a Lagoon 470 10 years back, got as far as the Canaries. The boat was nearly new at the time, but we never felt safe in heavy seas due to the hull flexing and the terrible noise from where the woodwork met the hull. Then we met a delivery crew on a Lagoon 500, who reported similar issues, plus they noted piles of wood dust at the flex points. Then we met another owner with another 500 who could not get the forward windows to stay in place. That was it we sold the boat after only a year and went back to a monohull. Had this for 7 years, and we feel a lot safer when the going gets rough. Sad as we loved the idea of a Cat, just lost confidence in the build qualities.

    • @MEdGrant
      @MEdGrant 2 года назад +15

      Watching the Parlay videos where Colin was dealing with Lagoon, it appeared obvious the Lagoon was (is?) nervous of the potential liability of the bulkhead issue. Yes, they have issued a “sort of” solution to the issue but have loaded it up with “qualifiers” to limit their financial exposure. It would not surprise me if they are dealing with individual owners with “non-disclosure agreements”. Yachting Monthly (which you can search for online), published this about the issue: "...Catamaran builder Lagoon is seeking to reassure owners of the Lagoon 450 following reports of forward bulkhead deformation. Lagoon, which is part of Groupe Beneteau, has stressed that no navigation or safety issues have been reported as a result of the fault...." So one supposes that having a boat falling apart during a trans-oceanic passage isn't really a safety issue!? Whether they accept responsibility (including financial) or not, at this point their credibility certainly seems to be in the toilet. In any case this is a massive public relations hit: I can't imagine people lining up to purchase a new (or used) Lagoon until this bulkhead issue gets sorted out. Meantime we can only hope that Ben and Ashley are able to get themselves into a good, SAFE sailboat for the remaining balance of their circumnavigation.

    • @georgecarney3083
      @georgecarney3083 2 года назад +8

      The fix from Lagoon is not a true fix, a quick easy fix, just a metal jacket to go around areas near the stress part of the bulkhead to strengthen that part only but not the entire boat is corrected and sound.

    I hope you guys read this. I am a naval architect and surveyor with 50 years experience of small craft both leisure and commercial and in all materials. My best advice is to contact your insurers and let them know what is happening. If no insurance, hire an accredited and experienced surveyor and a marine lawyer. This is no quick repair and the structural integrity of your boat is at serious risk. Do not take chances with the family and only let the builders repair the problem under supervision of your surveyor and lawyer. Best of luck to you all, you will need it with a problematic design and faulty construction techniques. The term I use is 'not fit for purpose'.

    Just a side comment... on the radio contact from the freighter. Commercial vessels are required to maintain a Radio Log as part of GMDSS. It's always weird to be asked those questions, but they'll typically get Vessel Name, orig port and destination, flag, and people on board as required by various regulations. Most contacts they don't bother to fill out the log, but because he first said "Safety Check" he was very likely putting it in his GMDSS Log (that's one of the categories). When we've had radio safety checks they've usually been from Navy / Coast Guard, etc. We did notice in South Africa they were a bit more rigorous in logging and safety checks, etc. But it is nice to know other seafarers are out there and actually standing watch!

    OMG, another Lagoon with broken bulkheads. I have been a sub for about 2 years and I love your channel - the kids are just adorable. After watching your last several episodes concerning your boat I think you will have a bigger problem than you may think. I would make a few suggestions and observations that I hope will help and prepare you for what to expect. First please know that currently there are several hundred Lagoons that are having the same issue with broken bulkheads - this is a design flaw in the boat. I would recommend you contact Lagoon for assistance - they may or may not help. Next I would review the video's from Parley Revival as they had to completely demo and rebuild their bulkheads which took them over 9 months on the hard in Panama. They were the first ones to bring this issue to light. Colin had several friends help with the rebuild (free labor) and it still cost him almost 50K from what he has stated in his video's His boat was also deflecting almost 2 inches and his salon doors and windows would not close. Hopefully you have discovered the problems sooner than he did. Please reach out to him as he can save you time and money!!!
    I am not trying to be a "Debbie Downer" but you need to know what you may be up against. The good thing is that when you are finished your boat will be structurally better than the original build and very safe for your family. In closing the one thing you will need the most is labor to help you with this project as the wife will be busy with the kids and filming to keep your channel going. With that said I am a professional remodeler from the States and I would be willing to come to where ever you are - at my own expense - to assist you with this project as you are going to need lots of help. As I see it this is a call for all hands on deck!
    In any event and whatever you decide I will be watching and supporting you and your wonderful family in this time of trouble and I hope ALL your supporters will do the same. Stay safe, fair winds and calm seas. P.S. If you would like to chat just let me know on your next post and I will give you a call.

      Sarcastically speaking... I had a back and forth with SabertOOth last week about the haulout in Thailand being the culprit that caused these issues. He said he was a "world class, world renowned, sailboat racer, who knew everything" and, it was impossible for the static load of a haulout to cause damage like that. He said that poor design causes damage like that. I said the same thing about bad lifts during haulout and I was told absolutely not the case so be watching for him to reply to you as well... Anyway, when you truly spend years on the water and do it for weeks and months at a time without seeing land plus deal with the shipyards and haulout facilities, YOU KNOW THE TRUTH. The ABSOLUTE most dangerous time in a boats life is during haulout and one bad lift can absolutely destroy a vessel.

      Definitely contact Sailing Parley. The guy worked tirelessly to fix the boat and made it his mission to get Lagoon to come to the party and acknowledge there may be a problem. Last time I viewed, they had negotiated for Lagoon's people to assess whether a boat (I think all 450s) had a problem and how it would be remediated.

      With political problems kicking of in the Seychelles and on Sri Lanka theres probably a few vessels moving away ...the AIS being down perhapse concerned them ...
      Glad you made it to your safe harbour...
      Im not sure how your going to tension the hulls back together below. The rear bulkheads Tops in compression bottoms in tension.. check your standing rigging tension each side of the mast. 🤔 It may have slackened somewhat.🤞🏼

    Surprised by the speed difference the Code 0 made. Our boat has a relatively small self tacking headsail. Have been considering a bowsprit for a few years, but you have convinced me to add one onto our old Lagoon 42 and setup a Code 0.
    We were in the Seychelles in the late 90's and had such a great time. La Digue was our favorite. Anchoring off a beautiful beaches with pink granite boulders making the headlands. Sandy walking trails leading away from the beach towards shops in the distance,. Have nothing but amazing memories from Seychelles.
    Hope all goes well with the bulkhead challenge and it is just a simple repair.

    Sailing Carly on the RUclips channel has a lagoon and his boat come apart just like yours is doing it’s major repair and you should watch his RUclips channel to see what your up against. This is a major problem. Lagoon manufacturer is aware of this problem and they should compensate you guys for this. I would be calling lagoon over in Europe right away. When you pull your boat out of the water it’s not gonna be straight, you will see if you watch sailing parlay revival video about this same exact problem. He repairs this problem start to finish. Good luck!
