Those are called Farrowing Crates for sows with piglets or getting ready for piglets. It allows the piglet to nurse then get out of the way of the mother so they are not crushed. They are not used to confine pigs so they get fat.
The world needs more humans like you two, Ben and Ash. As a species, I believe we have forgotten the values you just expressed here and all the other values expressed in your videos. I'm a 46-year-old parent of 3, and I admire you both!
As a dad it seriously breaks my heart to see the little ones sick scared and not completely understand what's going on. It's tough as a parent to not be able to fix what's wrong. Keep killing it guys love the content I live my sailing dreams through you! Lol
This would be terrifying as a parent but you both keep that worry in check and that really helps. Having parents like you is paradise. Love from the states ❤
I had an allergic reaction once. Epi in one arm, Benadryl in the other. Talk about sleepy but wide awake! I feel for Willa. It’s an awful feeling (the Epi). So glad she did ok overnight.
Ah man, I felt every single part of that anaphylactic reaction. My daughter had her first reaction at 7 months old, between then and when she was 3 I had to give her over 20 epipens.. we are in Aus and the second we give an epi we have to call an ambulance and then we stay atleast 4 hours for observations. She’s more often than not needed atleast 2 doses of epinephrine, often the ambulance arrives by the time of the secondary reaction so they are able to draw up a dose and give it to her through a much speller and less painful needle but man. It’s always, always absolutely heart breaking. I won’t even actually go in to just how bad it has gotten because I don’t want to put that fear on you. You guys did amazing. Lots of love to Willa and you guys 🫶🏼🫶🏼
I used to work on a farm in an Amish community that neighbored a dairy farm. When they weren’t bearing milk, they wandered freely but as the milk came, they we kept in small pins just like those pigs were in. Our cattle lived great lives but those dairy cows had it rough. Glad everything worked out with the epipen! Enjoy the Seychelles, can't wait to see you all back in the Caribbean!
Yes, Sadly dairy farms used to do that, luckily the trend is going away from that to the farms where the cows are free to walk around and get milked by a robot when they want to. Iowa dairy farmer YT channel is awesome. :)
Poor Willa, hope she outgrows those allergies. She looked so cute sleeping on the beach next to Bodhy. We loved Seychelles and especially LA Digue. Enjoy. Greetings from Saudi Arabia 👋 🇸🇦
The fear related to this is perpetual when so young, by explaining this it helps remove the trauma, keeping calm and reassuring, is what’s also needed. I know, because we didn’t have epi pens when I was young, it can be life and death if not acted on quickly. Anti histamines and ventolin were my go to. Then days of swelling and exhaustion.. well done to these parents and epi pen availability.
Hi Ben & Ash. My husband and I have been watching your videos for a few months. So interesting to hear other people talk about searching for paradise. We have been travelling the world for 19 years and are still hoping it may land in our lap! I think the reality is it comes in many forms. :) Mountains, sea, rural....we love it all. For as long as we have incredible experiences we will continue to refer to our allusive search for paradise. :)
Poor little Willa….and poor you! It’s so hard when your child is hurting……chokes me up to see that. You guys handled it so well! I’m so happy that she’s okay….have fun, you four!
(Regarding Anaphylaxis) This Is very important for an anaphylactic shock the EpiPen helps for about 10 minutes sometimes it can reverse it. But you NEED Benadryl also in your emergency kit I know this from first-hand experience! I went through three anaphylactic shock before EMT & Dr. told our family the EpiPen is to buy enough time to get to a medical facility. Benadryl is the medication that reverses anaphylactic shock! *As long as the individual's not allergic to Benadryl* The other good thing that the EpiPen will do is make it so the throat doesn't close as fast. So you can get Benadryl down into the stomach. Scary situation I feel for you guys!
@Carrie Thompson That's also a good method as an adult. When you're aware of what's Happening. But it may be harder to have a child chew on a pill. But yes I agree with your method overall. Get the Benadryl into the person having anaphylaxis as fast as possible!
Steroids are what keep the reaction from coming back. I would never just give the Epi and hope for the best. My Dr says take the Epi and get to a hospital!
Love your videos as always! Love the little changes in the intro. I hope your girl is better now - very scary what she / you have to go thru. Keeping you all in my prayers! See you next sunday!
Wow! Definitely a packed tight vid this time guys. Glad you made the passage safely and Willa is doing well. Those kids are sooo cute, and you two are amazing people!
Hi guys. Love your channel and watch it regularly over the last year and a half. I am a retired ER Doctor and I just wanted to give some advice which you may already have been given but take it in the spirit of assistance. Epinephrine only lasts about 30-60 min and the reason you have to watch them is there is sometimes a rebound after the med wears off. I have always recommended an antihistamine along with the epi-pen. you can use benadryl pediatric and they can have 0.1-0.2mg per Kilo of body weight. The elixir is 12.5mg per 5ml so a 5 Kilo baby should get about 0.5mg. or about 0.2ml of the elixir. You can pick up TB syringes( 1ml with clear 0.1ml markings) and use that to measure and administer. You should also have an Albuterol inhaler and a "spacer" with a small pediatric mask on one end and fitting for the inhaler on the other. You put the mask over her mouth and nose and let her breathe and give her one puff and allow her to breathe several breaths with the mask covering her mouth and nose. You can repeat the dose every 4-6 hours as needed. With these three meds you can weather almost any allergic reaction, even a fairly severe one. Just wanted you to have that information. Thanks again for your wonderful videos where I can enjoy vicariously the wonder of the world.
Seeing the animals in those conditions makes me sad. You guys are absolutely right about the KINDNESS regardless of differences. Be kind. You guys do such a good job of handling Willa’s allergic reactions - you are good parents, you are doing a good job!!
Regarding the pig pens, it’s for pigs about giving birth, so they can’t lie onto the newborns. It’s nit for fattening pigs up. Just want that out there.
Pie for breakfast! Yea! Reminds me of when we took our kids to a luau in Hawaii, the Big Kahuna sent all the kids to the desert table at the beginning. Ever since then when we have a great desert to look forward to, everyone yells "luau rules, kids eat desert first!" Always brings a smile to my face.
Food Allergies in our kids is so hard to get right every time. Good job for remaining calm and talking it through and making the right decision for your beloved daughter. Safe travels!
Just a heads up, for the pigs at least, that’s a sow farm. So, the pigs in the crates that couldn’t turn around are the mamas that will likely give birth soon. The reason is for the safety of the babies and for access for people and veterinarians to check for health. Mamas will often times step on the babies if they have complete range in those sections. Also, the temperature has to be controlled for the babies to survive, and if mamas mobility is limited, you can control where heat lamps will go for the babies. They usually hang out under the lamps to stay warm. Those pens are very specific to allow for the best survival and health of the babies. The mamas haha eve constant access to feed and water, and most of the time are just laying down chilling. For the safety and health of the animals and humane treatment of the baby piglets, the pens are setup that way. It’s often misunderstood and taken the wrong way, which is understandable, but maybe this little snipit of info might shed some light on things. Stay safe!
Love your video as usual, when I grew up during my mechanical apprenticeship I was taught several different sayings which I still believe in. #1: never open your mouth to prove you are right unless you are prepared to be proved wrong. #2: never gamble more than you are prepared to lose. And never, ever piss into the wind.. Thanks for your new perceptions on your channel about new paradises, they are definitely perceivable.😂 but we’ll received.!
I’m an American ER nurse, too we’ve lived on a catamaran for the past 7 years. We used to give kiddo’s Benadryl (check with your doctor about the dose but usually about 1/2 of a tablet) in conjunction with the Epi pen. It really elongates the antihistamine effect of the pen. Of course in early stages of a reaction we would give it first if the child could still swallow. It really helped. I’m sure you know this but sometimes it really lessened the whole reaction in time and intensity. Good health to you all. Cheers, Carolyn
The pigs were in the cages because they’re getting ready to give birth. When kept in small spaces like that, the mama pigs would lay on and squash babies if they weren’t in those cages. Our pigs are on pasture where that’s unlikely to happen, so no cages needed!
It’s always a pleasure watching you guys your one of the first channels I started watching a few years ago when I was thinking about taking the jump and it’s now official I splash on oct 28th in my newly purchased 40ft C&C I truly truly and honestly thank you guys for all of what you do and where a major motivating factor and for that I thank you at least currently hahaha I hope you and the kids are safe healthy keep living the dream and hope maybe one day we meet at an anchorage dinner and drinks on me love you guys stay safe see you next episode
Dang. Poor baby. Praying for her as always but thank you for sharing her challenges. It’s good to know how parents with these sometimes difficulties deal in foreign countries. God bless you family.
I knew a pig farmer that had 2 or 3 pigs at any 1 time and he built a small enclosure that prevented the mother pigs from "crushing" the babies. I don't know all the ins and outs of pig farming, but he said he was losing about half to three quarters of the small piglets, so that was his solution. once the pigs got bigger they were allowed to free roam in a field over about an acre. It appeared to be alright.... but what do I know.... He was part of 4H etc.
Yes, we had pig pens similar to those as well. But ours was big enough that the mom could lay down, and the babies still could escape being laid on. Once they were old enough they are moved to free roam.
Ben you are a loving Dad to your son. A protector to your children. Rare these days! Both of you and Ashley are calm kind and loving parents. I don't believe there is paradise on our earth. The earth is broken. Paradise is what feeds your souls. When my soul experience these, then I'm at rest. Galatians 5:22 NASBS But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law. Thanks for letting us know you make it to a destination before you set sail. It's nice to watch and not worry. Blessings on your explorations!
Thank you for this heartwarming video. I am 60 and my youngest is 6 now. Being parents is by far the hardest and also most rewarding job one can have. You doing a great job really.
Y'all are great parents. It's been an honour (added U to salute your Canadian-ness) to watch y'all morph into this role. I remember when it was just the two of you... 🤗
here here, I with Rodney Benker, his comments are exactly how I feel and yes I have 3 grown up children myself, my prayers to the Sailing Nahoa family, god bless you all !
Don’t stop! Keep up your search for paradise! We land lubbers have the same problems. You can’t escape problems, so you might as well have them while searching for paradise than have them while stuck in a cubicle. Love you guys. Blessings!
Hey ash and Ben, I grew up with these type allergies, pineapples with coconut, sometimes orange juice, I could react to. I always had gut aches from cows milk, I couldn’t do milk shakes, thick shakes full of ice cream when young, so I lived on limited milk, as no such thing as almond, soy etc, in the 70s. 80s. A few years ago I had full food allergy screening. I’m allergic to caesium, it’s the protein in milk, dairy. I too would be asthmatic sounding like Willa, nose and chest becomes restricted, starts with the sneezing and itchy throat, or eyes. Pls don’t wait until she gets to this late stage, her body has released the histamines long before, so waiting can allow the body to go into anaphylaxis. Strawberries, tomatoes, spinach are also high histamine foods, along with others. I’m sure you have seen a specialist, I just wanted to share my experiences, I still suffer allergies at times, I know the signs, so I nip it quickly with meds. I stupidly don’t have an epi pen, I hate the adrenaline heart speed factor. Glad she’s okay, you are such good calm parents and Willa is a sweety..
am in tears over Willa...to have two great parents is a gawd send....dont blame yourselves....you acted properly...she has two awesome gardian angels watching out..love y'all. ps/ fall has arrived in the pnw.
My chickens run all over this place in the daytime The go voluntarily into the chicken coup at night. The run around with the sheep and wild quails who also like it here east of the Redwoods. I have to go out and shine lights out into the big pastures to keep the mountain lions from venturing too close to the sheep. The animals are generally very happy here.
my heart dropped on floor when i saw the little one struggling I am still very far from having kids but it touched my heart very softly... so i cried just cried even though everything went good
Don't decide where you want to settle down until you have been to South Africa, a lot of cruisers fall in love with the Cape. I prefer the North coast and you'll probably have to stop at Richards bay which is sort of ok, but a little north of there, a place called St Lucia, thast paradise to me, from St Lucia, Cape Vidal to Sodwana and Khosi bay, even up into Mozambique till about Ponta do Ouro, its probably one of the most beautiful places on the planet.
I’m glad Willa is doing well When contemplating paradise on earth for me, it has always been when all my kids are home and we laugh while sharing memories. That’s paradise.
Very diplomatic (about the animals) while still making your point 😍 Sorry for poor Willa and you both as parents to watch her suffer so much. Allergies turn us grey hey! Thanks for educating everyone on the use of epipens. Very relieved it didn't result in a hospital stay for Willa, phew!
Could the coconut been airborne? I saw quite a few coconut trees in this vlog. My niece has a tree nut allergy and has to worry about shells and airborne contaminants, even if shells/fruits are being roasted or burned. Y'all are doing a great job explaining what you are doing to Willa!
Another great episode of my fav channel!!! SO sorry about Willa having an allergic reaction. My son was just like Willa when he was little. It's scary even if you know you have the right medication to give them to make them better but it's still scary for parents. Glad hers better! Little Bodhi is on the move now and they are both adorable 😍 💕 sending good vibes and hugs and many God blesses to my favorite Captain and crew. From USA TENNESSEE 🇺🇸
I know exactly what you were going to say about the differences between how the animals are treated in “other Cultures”…..Lots of difference in how they view & do or don’t “respect life” in general too. I once did a paper on this, & still feel just as confused though……
Impressive how you both can ride a bike; on dirt roads; with kids on back (and backpack on the front); while holding a camera (with solid viewpoints); and talking about relatively deep concepts. Without being out of breath
I feel for Willa, I have allergies with similar symptoms and it's scary and so uncomfortable. That beach was so beautiful! Sad how animals for food are kept and treated on some farms, the large meat producing farms in the 'civilized' world also are cruel to animals. But there is change, I watch a YT channel of a dairy farmer in Iowa, where the cows are treated very well. ❤️
Wow how scary with your poor baby! As a dad of 4 my heart feels for you in these scary situations. Have you looked into Curex or some other similar sublingual desensitization therapy? Apparently sublingual drops can help you get past the anaphylaxis reaction. Not to eat it but just to be safe. I am sure there are other ones as well that do similar. Blessings to you and stay safe! I enjoy watching your adventures!
Paradise can be found within one's self... An then when you find a paradise outside of your self. You recognize it better.... That's how I've always thought of "finding paradise"...this was a great episode..I'm sorry our wee Angel has such bad allergies..thank goodness for parents like you lot ... She's safe with in Mummy and Daddy's arm's always!! Thanks for sharing not only the good but the bad . We watch cuz we adore you 2 an your 2 wee kiddo's very much!!
It must be hard at times but thanks for sharing your allergy journey with Willa - anaphylaxis was a big concern for us moving aboard because Teesh has Epipens so it's really great to see how other cruisers handle it :)
Those were mother sows that stay caged when the piglets are first born. The little ones can escape when mom lays down otherwise they are crushed and die.
Love your mantra, Just Be Kind. Simple. Willa is a trooper! It breaks my heart me watching her dealing with a reaction. I can’t even imagine how terrifying it must be for you as parents. BTW…paradise was right there when Brodie gave you a big kiss. ❤
👍 take care! BTW, Sailing ZATARA mentioned you in ep.214 @mid-end THANKING YOU BOTH for the 'passing of hands' pertaining to their Lumar hatch. Unfortunately the 48ft mono, didn't make it 😢
I speak from experience. 1. A combination of 1-2 mg chlorpheneramine maleate and 4 oz coffee would probably have forestalled the need for the epinepherin pen. Consider having these things on hand. Chlorpheneramine maleate (Chlor-Trimeton or Walfinate) is an old-school anti-histamine. In my opinion it is far more effective than modern anti-histamines, but induces drowsiness. The coffee provides the adrenalin which epinepherin would provide and counteracts the chlorpheneramine maleate drowsiness. 2. You might want to consider not ordering Willa juice drinks out of an open glass.
God bless your baby! Please be freaking careful with cross contamination.......I have babies of my own and suffer when they get sick so I feel bad fpr your baby!
Chat to your Paeditrician guys. I’m sure simple promethazine or similar anti allergy tabs would be much easier than an epipen. Epipens are the Cannon so to speak ! You need them to work in severe anaphylaxis. I’ve been to anaphylaxis cases from penicillin injections. The patients stopped breathing and were pulseless in 5 minutes. Severe anaphylaxis is really not to be messed with.
You two have a tough job with those allergies! But so glad to see you are dealing with it well and not letting it hold you back from your adventures. ❤

Those pigs are in those caged pens to give birth and when they have piglets. This is used so they can’t squash there babies.
Exactly. They’re called farrowing crates.
I was just gonna say that. Thank you. Misinformation happens very fast,
I love how mellow but responsible you are about Willa’s allergies-as an educator I applaud you❤️❤️❤️
Ashley looked as frightened as i have seen her. They gave Willa the experience of mellow calm. Not the same. Great parenting.
This would be terrifying as a parent but you both keep that worry in check and that really helps. Having parents like you is paradise. Love from the states ❤

The pig cages are for mothers about to deliver. Pigs aren't the best mothers. The cage is to protect the piglets and ensure mama lets them nurse.

I've learned to live by.... Kindness is free daily.. I've added.. give til your heart is full....!!! ✌🏼💗😊❣️
Thank you for this heartwarming video. I am 60 and my youngest is 6 now. Being parents is by far the hardest and also most rewarding job one can have. You doing a great job really.
Thank goodness you carry an epi pen! Poor little Willa juat wanted a drink and now you have to be so careful! Great video guys 🤗💞
Y'all are great parents.
It's been an honour (added U to salute your Canadian-ness) to watch y'all morph into this role. I remember when it was just the two of you... 🤗
Poor baby! I would not wait like that
here here, I with Rodney Benker, his comments are exactly how I feel and yes I have 3 grown up children myself, my prayers to the Sailing Nahoa family, god bless you all !
So horrible when kids have issues…
Commenting for algorithms! Still watching, still loving your adventure.
Hugs you guys. You're the best ❤️
Don’t stop! Keep up your search for paradise! We land lubbers have the same problems. You can’t escape problems, so you might as well have them while searching for paradise than have them while stuck in a cubicle. Love you guys. Blessings!
Glad Willa is ok. That was a very nice beach and bike ride. The adventures continue. 👏⛵️🏝
So good to hear Willa was OK. She is very mature for her age it seems. Good to hear you're safely in Mayotte !
BLESS U ALL......BE SAFE....AND THANK U FOR LETTING US TRAVEL WITH U.......
It is always something. Glad you got through it again.
am in tears over Willa...to have two great parents is a gawd send....dont blame yourselves....you acted properly...she has two awesome gardian angels watching out..love y'all.
ps/ fall has arrived in the pnw.
You guys are amazing people and such lovely parents.
Got deported from Canada back in 1972 but do remember your early Thanksgiving. Thanks for reminding me.
You guys have the best channel!
Paradise is not a destination it's a state of mind.
Awesome peeps you are!! Thank you
I’m glad Willa is doing well
When contemplating paradise on earth for me, it has always been when all my kids are home and we laugh while sharing memories. That’s paradise.
Very diplomatic (about the animals) while still making your point 😍
Sorry for poor Willa and you both as parents to watch her suffer so much.
It's excruciating to watch Willa suffer from her allergy. I'm very sorry for her and the rest of the family. Please take care!
Thank you again. Your such an inspiration. I love your views on how to treat people and the wild life.. animals... Enjoy your day. ! Tony A.
So glad she is okay! It must be so scary, being at sea, in the case of a medical emergency. Safe travels.
🙋🏾♂️ I will gladly take the bikes when you arrive in South Africa Capetown
Impressive how you both can ride a bike; on dirt roads; with kids on back (and backpack on the front); while holding a camera (with solid viewpoints); and talking about relatively deep concepts.
Without being out of breath
Love you guys. Ill say it best I can, but as you grow and with little ones you express better what related all of us. 🍀💚
Poor sweet baby Willa😢you are good parents! Love your videos!
Great Job!! Thank You... :-)
Happy Thanksgiving from Toronto!
Love you guys, happy to see that the little one is better 🙂
I like your Thanksgiving much more than the US version!
Well i was about to go to bed but i can wait another 20 mins.
Hope you all are doing well
You Guys do a Great Job being calm in front of willa durring such a stressful situation! That is Commendable! I hope you guys keep many Epi Pens.
You two have a tough job with those allergies! But so glad to see you are dealing with it well and not letting it hold you back from your adventures. ❤
Poor Willa. She's fortunate her parents are so chill.
You live and learn ….that goes for all of us
