Marc Lamont Hill and Greg Foreman Have Heated Debate Over CRT

  • For many Republican candidates on Election Day, critical race theory served as a useful scapegoat.
A recent USA Today poll shows how divided parents are when it comes to teaching about race. When asked about teaching of the ongoing effects of slavery and racism, Black parents supported the idea with 82%, while white parents’ support was at little over 50%.
Conservative political commentator Greg Foreman joins Marc Lamont Hill on “Black News Tonight” to discuss the dilemma of teaching kids about racism.
All this and more on “Black News Tonight.”

Just teach history, it's really that simple. There is no theory behind it. Facts are facts, especially if the events have already occurred. People will form their own opinions based on their personal experiences, parentage, environment, and socio-economic status.

There's even less to learn from black conservatives than black Dems. I say this with all serioisness: for most black people, conservatism is a rebellious phase or a grift. Black Americans are familiar with parts of black history that many white people frankly are not - think of how many people had to learn about the Tulsa massacre or even the prevalence of race riots in general from.a comic book show. We understand thay conservatives are lying when they claim to care about freedom, economic justice, racial equality, etc. We understand that not only academically but because we live on the business end of conservative policy. So when we see black conservatives it's hard to take them seriously. They don't have anything to teach us. They have their beliefs because of things they never learned or things they pretend to have forgotten. This goes double when so many black conservatives are just mimicking white conservatives. There's not a single unique thought in their head.
And to put the target on myself, I'm saying this as a black person who was previously fairly moderate. I used to read not just "both sides" but as many sides as possible in good faith (I can talk Nocik, Charles Mills and Marx, or orthodox constitutional analysis vs. analyzes based on Charles Beard, for example), but when you do that, you quickly learn some positions just don't have anything to offer anyone. Conservatism is one of them, and black conservatives are just conservatives who should know better. I don't like MLH either, so don't smear me with that.

Growing up in the '90s I learned about racism and slavery, Jim Crow and segregation. We were taught in elementary school the heroes of our nation such as Abe Lincoln alongside and in lockstep with the black figures in our history who were presented equally if not more as heroes, as their fight was against a tangible and real evil very recent in our past. While I would have welcomed and would openly advocate for a more detailed history with some of the lesser known names, I can honestly say as a kid I felt the same sort of pride when learning about Harriet Tubman, Rosa Parks, or Martin Luther King then I did in regards to any other American figure, despite being a white Jewish kid. Sure my understanding was limited in juvenile, I was a child, but call it naive but that sense of pride and the knot in my throat I got when listening to Dr Kings I had a dream speech as a child was good. And that, as a grown man with much more knowledge of the world and its messiness and persistent injustice, it feels the exact same way, is good. It's pride of truth itself, in the goodness and resilience of other people, it's pride for the love of Liberty, in the universal spirit that transcends ones time and space, or anything else. This is not to say the experience of someone black is not on top of this completely separate and foreign to me, I'm sure that it is, just as the feeling is different thinking about my relatives who escaped Poland before the wars, and Russia before the purges, and all those that did not brings up in me a feeling unique. But thinking of such things I'm sure also brings upon to others that same sense much more strong I believe, that ultimately unites. Sorry to be sappy, but all this debate makes me equal parts modeling to scared. Equity is not equality, The means to reach the stated goals of equity have been tried throughout our history, and to genocidal effect. I'm not even sure if pure equity is even the metric to care about per se, but regardless, This road to good intentions wherein all things are equal by fiat is lined the bodies of millions, from the failures of the 20th centurys failed Utopias and restorative projects

Crt IS implemented in schools. They taught principles of CRT when I was in school and I graduated in 2016. I was stuck in my echo chamber and internalized the principles of CRT, then I helped to teach them as the vice president and president of Urbana high school's African American club. I remember doing the "Privilege Walk" and all sorts of stuff. I remember telling black people that they needed to wake up to their reality, without realizing reality myself or what I was saying... I was denying blackness and the diversity (even of thought) within my own race. This opened my eyes. There is no one way to be black and there is no one black experience. Just as Africa has many continents, clothing styles, cultures, laws, governments, religions, languages, and foods, we black people have subcultures and individual ideas and characteristics that make us beautiful and pave way to our societal contributions, even inspiring us with different perspectives that may or may not help us shape our own. However, critical race theory or the teaching that institutional power lies with the majority demographic is a tool of division and its blanketed, not specific to any one subject to which it may be arguable. Crt fails when discussing income, education, business ownership (and success), or bank loans. Nigerians and Asian (mostly Chinese) immigrants beat black and white people in all of these categories but they are BIPOC which refutes the idea that whiteness and white people reign superior. This also fails to acknowledge the amount of white people on government assistance or that are homeless. The system seems to be failing white people too. Meanwhile illegal immigrants are pouring in by the millions, aliens are getting 450,000 per family member, and build back better gives amnesty. It sounds like the most critical race is non-white. No one can name ONE thing that propels white people within policy, but there are all sorts of "equality" and "equity" programs to uplifts BIPOC, LGBTQ+, and other disadvantaged people. I haven't found a scholarship (yet) for white people. Not to mention, some white people lie on applicants because it is less beneficial to be white in current society and it often works. CRT leads to situations like South Africa and that's not the American way. CRT brings division.

Couldn’t get to minute 2. When this grifter said it was the responsibility of the parents to talk to their children about race-and then suggested whether it be at 2 or when they’re teenagers, and intimated that this would be in order, he demonstrated that he was not competent to engage in dialogue with any informed and well-educated person on the topic. Bro. Hill should’ve said, “Thank you for your time! When we come back from the break, what retiring Black farmers are are doing to inspire and create a new generation of young, Black farmers. Back in a moment.” Boy, bye.

I think this is where Black people are getting caught up on CRT. They see someone telling there children that they are oppressed, but i went to school in the late 60's and 70,'s and graduated in the early 80's. I was taught about slavery in school, learned about the slave trade from roots on tv, touch the hands of former slaves, knew people who 10 years old when it ended and people who escape because they was born the year it ended. I know people today who remember Jim Crow and having to go to back of restaurants to get something to eat, drinking out of colored water fountains and make sure they was hime before nightfall so the wouldn't get beat hung. So CRT was something to upset white folks to get trump votes.

In a time when literacy, science and mathematics are at an all time low among black Americans, black people should eschew any interest in past grievances or interpretation of history in general. Their primary focus should be in reaching parity in math, literacy and science. Furthermore, any policy that doesn't primarily focus on economic success, is a waste of time. Lastly, let parents teach their children how to be good people; let teachers teach basic skills.

    • @edwardsteam5457

@Free breakfast Program I am not sure what your point is. I do not have any children and it appears you assume I am white. Who is responsible for public education? Who is responsible for how children are educated? Blaming white women is silly. Create your own schools like Jews, Muslims, Amish and Mormons, etc.. do. In fact, expecting other people, outside of your community with little skin in the game, to educate your kids seems a tad silly to me. Stop complaining; stop whining and stop looking for someone to do something for you.

Of course he wants this guest back - he was unprepared and dug his own grave. I’ll say that this was an interesting interview. Typically, a conservative host will ask their leftist guest for specific examples to back up their claims, and the leftist gives anecdotes or speaks in generalities/emotion. The shoes were on the other feet here. I wouldn’t have been swayed by this guest’s opinion solely because he wasn’t able to back up his claims at all. It’d be interesting to see Marc have a better prepared guest on his program. Can’t argue the outcome here.
