  • The state of Utah could be joining the party of banning critical race theory.
    Representative Steve Christiansen has introduced a resolution on the subject of critical race theory in public education.
    The H.R. 901 proposes “that some concepts contained in critical race theory demean important societal values and it proposes that no curriculum in the state include concepts that promote one race is inherently superior or inferior to another race.”
    Christiansen joins Marc Lamont Hill on “Black News Tonight” to talk about the resolution.
    All this and more on “Black News Tonight.”

    • @BigBlackRod
      @BigBlackRod 2 года назад +8

      @@bconni2 Critical Race Theory does not call for a uniformly positive or negative teaching of American history, but rather an unvarnished, balanced portrayal of the good and bad. To illustrate, it does not advocate the renouncement of our many laudatory leaps toward progress, such as Reconstruction, ending slavery, expanding suffrage or enacting broad Civic Rights laws. Rather, it insists that we should not close our eyes to the tragedies of our past, like the 1873 Colfax Louisiana courthouse assault, 1898 Wilmington North Carolina coup d’etat, 1919 Elaine Arkansas slaughter or 1921 Tulsa Oklahoma massacre.
      How many of us learned of these monstrous acts in school? And, for those of who did, are we any less concerned about making our country better? Do we have to be coddled or, worse yet, misled to be patriots?
      Critical Race Theory, by emphasizing honesty, collides with American mythology. By putting our nation’s noblest achievements in context, it reveals racism for what it is, a pervasive social construct propped up for generations by laws and myths (e.g., Jim Crow segregation laws and Horatio Alger tales). More important, it shows how we can learn from our mistakes and overcome our worst impulses. It helps us understand that racism is a virus that can infect us all and stubbornly resist political antidotes like laws, policies and jurisprudence.

What he gave was an example of an exercise meant to demonstrate that privilege does exist. Which they both agreed it does. I’m fifteen minutes in and I STILL haven’t heard what exactly they think qualifies as teaching “superiority”, unless that is the example of the student who had been embarrassed by the privilege exercise. It’s all very vague.

    • @paulsnow
      @paulsnow 2 года назад +9

      @@mint_soup9743 What wasn't defined in the discussion was any distinction between "superiority" and "privilege."
      Superiority doesn't exist without privilege. Superiority always implies a party has an advantage over others.
      Likewise, the unearned privilege of whites is what a "privilege walk" is teaching. If a white person has unearned privilege over others, then they at the very least have a superior position. But that's really not what's being taught. Because it isn't a superior position they accepted. They're being taught in this exercise that the white person is in a superior position unavoidably and solely by their skin color, sex, and other innate traits.
      How would a child see it any other way? I've seen the videos, and heard what kids said afterwards. The kids see this as defining a hierarchy based on traits ranging from those in the dominant position to those in the dominated position. Dominating, privileged, Superior, exalted, preferred, advantageous... These words all applied to whites and asserted as unearned.
      It's a damaging and inaccurate perspective that carries built in assumptions about society that the children are not in a position to refute.
      And it is most definitely rooted in CRT.

    • @mint_soup9743
      @mint_soup9743 2 года назад +8

      @@paulsnow I would have to see the entirety of the exercise to comment further. An exercise that (mostly) concentrates on anything other than how laws affect different groups in society is indeed questionable from a public education standpoint. Examining and addressing social inequalities that make one group more privileged than the others is wise, if it’s not about calling one group or another “racist”. But addressing things like real legitimate history and other inequality issues such as limited access to voting in certain locations (black communities) is absolutely important and real. Selling our children a fairytale will not help them understand and navigate the world. But again, without seeing the experiment or at least reading more about it, I can’t comment much more.

      Listen to the message the kids got from the exercise. They absolutely heard blacks at the back, whites to the front.
      Not one question was something the kids can do anything about. Like, "Step forward if you have read a book on your own (not assigned) in the last month." Or "Step back if you have ever played sick to miss school."
      And what real good does it do to prejudice kids and sensitize kids to bigotry? Will the world really be the same in ten years as it is today?
      It wasn't comparing the 60's to the 70's to the 80's to the 90's to the 00's. And so on. We have progressed and and the world is changing. Why teach them differently?

      Well it's bc they a) don't have a strong grasp on what CRT really is or b) they do wholeheartedly understand what it is but do not want to acknowledge it bc if they do, they have to take into consideration every injustice that was done to people of color BEFORE they put themselves in the position to judge them. A lot of racist people would rather ignore what has systemically been done (and is currently happening) to people of color bc it's easier then accepting the truth. For example, it's easy for white collar trust fund baby Kendall to lable let's say Tyrone as lazy bc Tyrone is unemployed. This holds especially true if Kendall doesn't take the time to inform himself of how simply having an ethnic sounding name can drastically decreases Tyrone's chances of successfully securing an interview despite having the same or higher credentials than Kendall.

Racism is always ASSUMED to have occurred.”
    Peter Boghossian, former Professor of Philosphy at Portland State University (he had to quit his job because the situation had gotten so bad there): “We are training people and indoctrinating them in a world view that asks not if racism happened, but how it happened - how did this happen? Abstract: "This article examines the purposeful use of counternarrative to develop an antiracist school identity. Based on a seven-year ethnographic project at an elementary school in the southeast U.S., it illustrates how counternarrative can be employed as strategy to embed Critical Race Theory (CRT) into school equity discourse, and, in doing so, help public schools disrupt majoritarian narratives that deny the salience of race. It argues that by developing counternarratives rooted in perspectives and knowledge of teachers of color, and then using those counternarratives specifically for the purposes of strategizing schools and researchers can help CRT achieve its activist function in K-12 contexts."

    Tens of thousands of parents have similarly voiced concerns about the presence of statues of treasonous confederate leaders in public and governmental spaces. Can the desires of these parents, who will have no problems being identified, also be honored sir? Or do they not have the privilege to be heard as equally as the anonymous parents.

      Reading absent comprehension is a vice. Exposing laws and policies which adversely affect racial equity is one goal of CRT. And because politics and the courts are the root of those disparities, it follows they must be used to abolish them. If one wants to uphold the status-quo, peace be damed, Dr. Tilson.

    Why is it so important that CRT is ACTUALLY being promoted in schools before the bill proposed by this Utah lawmaker should be considered necessary?????? It is being taught in schools, but even if not, the bill would simply ensure it is never taught.

    This made me so happy. I live in the vicinity of this Rep and our area is filled with out of touch people like him that only live in their little religious bubble. The privilege comment was great because Mormonism is a MASSIVE patriarchy.

      Mormons is a patriarch. This means there is a father in the home to provide discipline to a son or daughter.
      Obviously, this doesn’t appeal to you. But these White families are happy without Feminism.

    I lived many years in Utah. Went to high school there. This mentality comes from the white Mormon power structure that runs that state. His way of speaking, his nomenclature, his white shirt and tie, his tone of voice and kind of calm, soft and non confrontational way of speaking, his demeanor, almost pensive sounding, he fits TO THE TEE the mold of the typical mormon leader. This is how the church elders talk. And keep in mind, the mormon church literally banned black people from being I. The priesthood and attending the temples up until the 1970s. That should give you the idea of where this man's mentality and way of thinking are.. I'll never live in Utah again.
