- The never-ending discussions about reparations have reached across racial lines.
According to a University of Massachusetts Amherst poll, 86% of African Americans support the federal government sending cash payments to the descendants of slaves, while 72% of whites disapprove of the idea. As a result, almost two-thirds of all Americans oppose reparations.
Yvette Carnell, who is the co-founder of the American Descendants of Slavery movement, joins Marc Lamont Hill on “Black News Tonight” to discuss reparations.
All this and more on “Black News Tonight.”

I will never understand how reparations for slaves/ slave descendants remains a question, ESPECIALLY, when slave owners received reparations. It will NEVER make sense.
Because at its inception, in this American experiment, it was never actually meant for us to be respected as full human beings and citizens. For us, they make it seem like we perpetually have to earn citizenship and all its benefits as if we weren't born here. Their purpose for us was to extract our labor to enrich this country and build their wealth. They've only sophisticated their methods as we have made gains. Us reaping the fruits of our own labor and being respected as first-class citizens wasn't part of the equation.
Slave owners in the USA never received reparations. This is apparently a widely circulated myth among Black Americans. It is not true.
It is a question, because it is 150 years distant and no one alive today was a slave or slave owner. Also, slavery was legal and constitutional until the adoption of the 13-15 amendments.

This was a good interview and I must say Sistah Yvette accorded herself well. On point!
This conversation with Yvette Carnell is so greatly appreciated. It is such a honor to have her expertise of knowledge, loyalty, tireless dedication,…advocate for the American Descendants of Slavery. I look forward to seeing the continuation of this topic with Yvette on this platform and many others to come. Thank you
How can anyone talk about reparations, especially during Black August, with out talking about freeing political prisoners?!? HOW SWAY?!?!?
Yes, brother! You gotta give Yvette and Tone more time!
I havent seen Yvette on YT in years.. its great to her again!
No dooooouuubt!!!
Proud of you Yvette! Shouts out to #ADOSAF and the ADOS fam in the chat! We’re here now! ✌🏿❤️✊🏿
How can anyone talk about reparations, especially during Black August, with out talking about freeing political prisoners?!?
Yvette masterfully articulated our justice claim!
As always .
I've seen the hashtag #ADOS but had no idea who or what they represent. Interesting perspective. There is definitely a distinct responsibility to your territory. The cultures and values are not the same due to those distinctly different experiences. It seems that people of #ADOS are not well represented publicly. They're alot of cultural imitators. They don't get the nuances of black American culture. Reparations in the form of cash, health insurance, education and housing grants, housing downpayments etc.
And I thought this was a Respectful conversation I also wish it was longer.
I'm so happy you are here. Yvette Carnell kuddos to you for teaching the truth so clear and boldly to America. My mother and grandmother thank you for they too were affected by Jim Crow laws and worked as maids for white families and as a result die penniless. Lamont Hill you are my favorite news reporter and truly appreciate your dedication to uplifting the black community by having Yvette and Tone on your show.
Yvette is always on 🔥🔥🔥🔥!
Great conversation arguments, that’s a good starting point! Excellent
America is about money. Slavery was about money. Reparations is about money. I don't need an apology. Just reimburse me for the money you stole from 20 generations of my family.
Guess we ain't bots no more😁
Lololol.
Excellent interview with Yvette Carnell. A true activist and intellectual leading ADOS. Have Antonio Moore on next.
Marc literally loathed at the thought of this conversation, just look how he said it in the beginning. 👎🏾😒.... this movement needs REAL support, not support from someone who will sellout in a heart beat.
Yvette's arguments rose above his disdain, but he we will be more challenging if and when she returns. He clearly has a narrative he would like to push. Maybe perhaps to get a pat on the head from unseen hands. I believe Yvette and/or Tone will know how to navigate this platform. Sound arguments, data and historical facts means something to thinking people and will establish a barrier for MLH's foolishness if he comes with it. He will only make himself look ridiculous in his rebuttals if Yvette and Tone are given equal time to present themselves properly. His support is not needed or desired in my book. He has shown who he is, but ADOS HQ can still take advantage of the access to a broader audience.
Y’all just say anything. I support reparations. Always have. I invited Yvette and Tone on the show. I haven’t loathed anything.
Great job yvette! I missed you in youtube and calling into the show
Make sure yall bring Yvette back on! She and #ADOS are the most comprehensive voices on reparations today!
Reparations is nonsense. Why do you want reparations as someone who never was a slave from people who never enslaved you?

The Madam Prime Minister of Barbados was asked about
Reparations for her people.
She sounded like Yvette in her response. You, sound like the interviewer who the Prime Minister took to the woodshed and told her that she was disingenuous in her questioning. The Prime Minister said "Enslavers were paid when the business of slavery ended. Those enslaved and Descendants have NEVER received a dime!
Through CARICOM she's coming for HER people's money.
The interviewer responded by saying Madam Prime Minister I quess you put me in my place.
Yvette and the Prime Minister
have both done their homework. Both receive an "A" for fighting to secure reparations for THEIR people.
The interview was on the BBC.
@maree rogers, move to Barbados then.
This is what a good-faith conversation looks like.
Great interview!
Facts!
Yeah, better than most but the Pan-African questions are annoying and a bit dishonest, imo. The last 2 minutes shows that ADOS, a group who owes no one anything is still more pro-“African” than Pan-Africanist.
Marc had to laugh at that comment about Nigerian police reform, because he knew it was straight facts.
Why are you guys so obsessed with African when they are not even one million Africans in America?
"If it wasn't for our freedom struggle, wouldn't be any brown people here" I felt that
Glad this Convo happened
Ados South Carolina here.
Everyone can be themselves, but as soon as you say ADOS HEBREW all of a sudden people get butt hurt. We have no problem with everyone being themselves, but many have issues with us being ourselves. This foolishness has to stop. You cannot stop people from being who they are, just like you have to be who you are.
Yvette Carnell is well spoke. Every word she spoke was thought out and full of sense.
She served a well seasoned word salad. She didnt answer how to determine WHO is directly descended from slaves (through unbroken lineage) and where the money comes from. She also made a false equivalence mentioning japanese reparations. Payment was made to living survivors who experienced being interned, NOT their descendants. Get her outta here.
