Because reparations folk don't want to pay for anything themselves they would rather collect from generations who had Nothing to do with slavery. Idiotic idea, it will never happen.
The ADOS understanding of reparations is very different from Coates. ADOS seems to think reparations is due only to black descendants of slaves, and no other black victims of racial crime. It’s clear that Coates is talking more broadly about systematic racism.
This will go on and on, and on........people need to stand up and demand a debate on this same issue, not to cause more discussion but to delineate to the AMERICAN electorate, who's for and who's against. It lynched no one, burned down no towns, homes or businesses. It didnt rape grown men to "buck break" them. Political affiliation did not conduct medical experiments on or give syphilis to black man for 30 years and leave them untreated. People did that! White people!
I have heard some persons argue for reparations. Although this violates due process completely and requires persons of today to pay for the sins of centuries past, I am actually willing to pay reparations to put this bullshit completely behind us once and for all. I think we should pay $500….no, let’s make that $1000. You just need to show me the scars on your back where your master beat you with a bullwhip and the money is all your’s. That’s $1000 per scar. Agreed? Do you know who broke that promise of a mule and land to the newly freed slaves? I am thinking it’s the same people, of the same political party, that fought to keep them as slaves in the first place and who continue trying to keep them as slaves to this day. It’s the same party that has pushed racist policies in action and deed since it’s founding through today.

I can not for the life of me understand how social scientist, Dr Joy Degruy, wasnt also at that hearing to present her amazing breakdown of the various effects of slavery that we see today. She should be in every major discussion regarding reparations.
I can. This was a hearing more or less to make the case for the study of reparations (not like we really need one IMO, but I get how these things are done and this is a first step). Usually it is during the study and presentation of the results in latter meetings when we sees the heavy hitters and the research. What we have to do is keep the pressure up that this doesn't just stop or is procedurally slowed down as it winds through a ridiculously slow process which in many cases is when these things have a tendency to go away.

Coates has said he is mainly a journalist and has not really studied reparations. However, no group receivimg reparations in this country has foregone financial justice in the form of cash payments to individuals. Coates apparently believes American descendants of slaves need to have more study on the wealth gap when we have men like Dr. Sandy Darrity who has already done extensive study and was ignored by this commission to apparently do a study.

Thanks to Ta-Nehisi Coates and Democracy Now for this discussion. One point that can’t be emphasized enough is that slavery begat racism, and right now, as I’m writing this, racism impacts every major institution. We can’t name an institution that does not consistently, annually, produce racially disparate outcomes: Education. Finance. Employment. Criminal justice. Economics. Health care. Politics. Law. Entertainment. Mental health. And so on. In fact, this is how we’ve been able to have “racism without racists,” as Eduardo Bonilla-Silva wrote. So long as we have fundamentally “nice” people, who don’t make the connection between historical racism and modern systems (which came to be via policy, voting, pseudo science, unconscious bias, etc.), we’ll continue to create racist outcomes that we simply don’t see.

An unrelenting demand for Reparations should be the number one concern of any serious candidate running for high office. It's the nation's oldest & most shamefully ignored debt. So much was taken that can never be replaced. Financial reimbursement is the one thing that can.
If you truly hate slavery, focus on the mechanism that allows that system to flourish, *private central banking* . Without a private central bank to store the loot, slavery doesn't really work.
Take a look at world history. You'll see slavery flourished in many places without private central banking starting in Africa and spreading all over the world.
Instead of funding other countries( Israel ) the US should pay reparations to her own citizens that has suffered under the oppressing system of racism.
Glad someone is saying reparations are about more than slavery and about the continued depression of black people of all backgrounds in this country, the social, geographical, racial, political and financial exclusion of black people has long exacerbated the "original sin" of slavery. As a Haitian, I'm glad people are aware of the strategic bankrupting of Haiti following its independence. France is elitist in comparing its treatment of black people relative to the USA. I lived there and that was my experience, but France doesn't even acknowledge all thst it has done to its colonized nations. Coleman Hughes is wrong headed in his definition of what it means to be a victim and I'm glad Coates sufficiently rebutted him.
This is critical thinking and plain common sense. I stand here looking at shackles of my ancestor on the wall as a display. But we dont deserve this inheritance. This is ridiculous we are builders of America. We deserve it not only in financially but in other ways .

Yes I know who he is and what he has written. I'm not discounting his importance. I just know that he said in this interview that he didn't have the data when he wrote his article before, and Yvette also said that he didn't have the data before. But in that hearing Mr. Coates brought data which enhanced everything that he already wrote in that article. So I appreciate him for kicking that hearing off and setting the bar so high that naysayers couldn't even touch him.
@@milahkay212 I do appreciate him doing it too. He came correct. To be clear - Coates said around 8 minutes into the interview that he did not have the information when he wrote a previous piece in *2012*. He then said something to the affect that he wouldn't have been able to bring that level of information to answer Amy Goodman's questions nor to the committee hearing if it wasn't for his level of knowledge brought about through the research for his *2014* piece. I personally think for an essay (which is what he wrote and not a paper) he did an excellent job of including data as well as the sources he used and tying them into the personal accounts of the harm it did individually and collectively to the black people which is the purpose of an essay.
Yes I saw that part in the interview of him saying that he have the data. I was referring to the interview in that sense. I understand his importance. I never was trying to downplay it. It's just nice to see him expanding his knowledge and sharing that with us.

@Respect/Walk We've already have had one and obviously haven't learned from past mistakes which led to it. If another civil war arises it's because people refuse to do the right thing. Curtis Mayfield said it best "If there is hell below, we're all going to go".
@Respect/Walk Who said anything about guilt? The issue is redress and making an injured party whole. There are many right things in the world and many ways people can do the right thing. Compensation to the descendants of people who did work and were not paid for it by the heirs of those who were enriched by the work is one. Compensation to descendants of people who legally owned land but were violently displaced and the land seized is another. Compensation from the government which benefited from said system is one more. As far as who pays for it - we all do. I don't hear people like you out here complaining about who pays for reparations to the heirs of civilians killed by US forces abroad. I don't see people like you appear to be voicing opposition to the reparation of stolen art money and other personal items to relatives and descendants of the Jewish victims of Nazi Europe, hell we are still paying for reparations to descendants of Japanese internment camp survivors and to some native Americans for violations of treaties which happened well over a century ago. Is that wrong to do? You pay. Bottom line you pay for it. You committed none of those other crimes I noted above but your tax dollars go to paying for them. If you have a problem with reparations for blacks and none of those other things I pointed out then it's your hypocrisy and your problem with black people which won't allow you to understand the difference between right and wrong. Pretty basic.
@Respect/Walk Obviously your reading comprehension sucks. Who said anything about guilt besides you? Compensation for wrong doing has nothing to do with guilt. Stop being so emotional about things like this and read the rest of what I wrote. As far as your "family helped free them" bit - that doesn't amount to a hill of beans. I wouldn't know you from Adam to verify if what you say is true or not. Even if members of your family happened to be Union soldiers, abolitionists, WWII or someone simply motivated to do the right thing obviously it didn't pass down to you. Thank God for them for having the moral fibre to do the right thing. Shame on you for spitting on their legacy.
@Respect/Walk Well whether or not you supported it, your tax dollars paid for it. I'm sure your tax dollars paid for many other things you didn't/don't agree with and probably because of people you or your forebears made leaders causing the issue which created the damage in the first place, usually with only their interest (not yours) in mind. Same can be said about things you would prefer to see your tax dollars go to and they aren't because of those same people. Rather than bitch and moan about a group of people getting something owed to them, hold the leaders you elected accountable for fucking up things in the first place.

Usually it is during the study and presentation of the results in latter meetings when we sees the heavy hitters and the research.

Democracy today Minnesota we as a nation will continue. America let's move forward and continue to lead are people forward.
@MrShiggitty. Are you thinking about Jews when you say private central banking?
Coleman Hughes probably got paid to say that garbage.

one of the best, most historically relevant interviews ever!

So he's been listening to ToneTalks or Yvette Carnell 🤔🤔?? I'm happy he brought that data!
He probably does. I think everybody does (but they don't want to admit it) but Coates wrote an essay called the Case for Reparations in 2014. He really goes in. If you haven't read it yet I suggest you do.
Yeah please understand that this is NOT new and didnt start with Tone & Yvette... H.R. 40 was being brought before Congress every year by Rangel before he had to resign... Coates has been talking about Reparations in his articles and literature for years now! Claude Anderson as well! While Tone and Yvette have helped the conversation move forward it doesn't mean that NOBODY uses data, it take courge not be be a fan and become a student of history.
Traditionalist’s never want change.
I wonder if it has to do with the name.
African nations where we were sold from need to pay also. Without Africa selling it own there would not have been enslavement of Africans in America.
Americans are now mixed and some not here during slavery. Too hard to prove real ancestor of slaves back that far.
Coleman Hughes is the epitome of a SELL OUT!!!
Care to explain why?
The man who speaks with reason and nuance, but not for your religiosity, is a "sell out", is he? The fact you go immediately for othering language instead of arguing against the man's points says more about the weakness of your character than his.
Hilarious how people call Coleman a Sell Out. As if the Coates line of sound bites aren't where the bread is buttered.
Translation: "Sell Out" = Because Coleman is Black, he has to believe exactly our doctrine. In other words, you're saying a black man can't think through things himself and have his own opinions. You're saying that skin color means that he has to think certain things.... which is ironically, racist.
No wonder you won't engage his arguments.
@@YogGroove He's a sell out for using "feel good" rhetoric to the detriment of a damaged group he claims to be a part of. Reparations is not about a person but a people. A people he choose to neglect for political clout. We don't see that as integrity.
@@jwalker4647 You don't see it as Integrity because you are fundamentalists. Fundamentalists of one religion can't face anything outside their dogma. There's nothing wrong with disagreeing with Coleman. I am persuaded, personally, to disagree with him, but calling him a sell out only undermines your position as it reveals your groupthink. If it wasn't groupthink, you would disrespect the arguments rather than disrespect the man.
Coleman's first testimony states that he believes Racism is a Stain on the Country, that reparations not paid are the country's worst sin, and that there is some kind of historical recognition due. He believes that reparations paid today don't address the Black Community's biggest problems. He continues to outline a logical case for his opinions.
I am not entirely persuaded by his logic, but I am more persuaded by his logic than his detractors because they refuse to engage his argument. They just want to call him names, often racist names.
Your refusal to engage the argument, but instead hate, name call, disrespect him, and otherize display that you are not interested in finding logical solutions. If you were interested in logical solutions, you would engage discourse. Instead you slander. You are a cult.
When the true people of the Most High were in Egypt, Moses' fight with the Pharaoh was not only about releasing the Hebrews but also about payment for the work they did as slaves. They too built the county through free force labor. When the Pharaoh finally relented to the pressure of the Most High, the freed Hebrews left Egypt with much wealth. Don't stress you people of former and present slaves, the Most High will make them pay. WATCH AND PRAY.
AMEN! COMING SOON TO 2ND EGYPT!
