- A week ago, the fourth U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals voted in favor of upholding the death sentence for Dylann Roof.
He is responsible for the 2015 Charleston Church shooting in South Carolina where he murdered nine Black congregants in cold blood. Marc Lamont Hill shared his unpopular opinion that he’s against Roof getting the death penalty. He got a lot of backlash on social media for his take.
Rizza Islam, a researcher, international activist and a member of the Nation of Islam, joins Hill on “Black News Tonight” to debate if Roof deserved the death penalty.

Rizza was right on facts but missed the long term strategy. Lamont was right if you keep the death penalty black folks are going to die and get rail roaded. Removing one tool doesn’t stop black women from dying to medical malpractice/ brothers overseas dying to war/poverty and exploitation across the globe/ police brutality or the other tools but it takes one off the board.

Yes Rizza was right about the points he made ABOUT Dylan Roof. However, Marc points is about eliminating capital punishment, a system that disproportionately targets BLK people. The real argument is getting lost on Dylann roof.
But what about wrong convictions there have been people who’ve been been convicted and given the death penalty and we have killed them. I think a life behind bars is a far greater punishment just my opinion. One day maybe decades from now they’re going to think this is barbaric. And unless the pro-death penalty people are willing to live with the acceptance of countless innocent people being put to death (some of whom innocence was proven only after execution), then there is no doubt the death penalty should be abolished. Y'all really act like a 21 yr old possibly living in prison for another 60 yrs is a cake walk. If DR was given 9 life sentences, I guarantee that as the years wear on, his smugness', non-repentance would start to waver. The argument isn’t about Roof. It’s about the death penalty and how it is used against us more than any other race of people. Roof is the entry point to the conversation because his appeal was turned down.

I hear both arguments. Marc is more idealistic. Rizza is more realistic. The only rational argument in this case for him not to get the death penalty, is that the punishment is not severe enough. Meaning death helps him escape long term consequences. It gives him an out. The thing with liberals like Marc Lamont Hill is they ignore history and material conditions when they come to their various positions. Note how this guy makes it sound like the death penalty wasn't already disproportionally used against Black prisoners to begin with. Not to mention the ones who were innocent, infirm, mentally ill, etc. He won't even question who the legal system serves, what it's purpose is for, who controls it, and how it came to be in the first place. I don't support the death penalty but why use this shitstain to argue against it?

It's quite simple, if the death penalty is off the legal books, innocent people won't be executed by the state. If 1 innocent person is saved from this this, sparing the "dylan roofs" to life sentences is absolutely worth it. Rizza is obviously speaking from his emotionalism, & I get it. Dr. Hill's position is definitely the more excellent way.

The thing is there is overwhelming evidence that Roof killed those people. Most Black people on death row are there without overwhelming evidence.

@@jahkaifrierson2482 I am for rotting if me or you benefit from it. We literally pay money out of our pockets to house prisons, in which prisoners work and produce but yet we get nothing in return. They sell us security that they do not offer.
