People try to portray men as emotionally detached, but this song is a perfect example of our loyalty. When we fall in love with a woman we do for life.
I remember listening to this song for years as a kid. Not really getting it. Then the words they placed a wreath upon his door, was finally understood. Thanks for the memories.
You can talk about Hank, Willie, Dwight, Loretta, Johnny, Conway, Waylon, Reba, etc. etc. but NONE of them ever sang a song like George when he recorded this song! It's the epitome of country music and a goal for others to reach for, but I don't think they'll ever reach!
Time out man. I mean. George is a king of the genre. But cmon man, when Hank laid his soul bare for the world to see when singing Cold Cold Heart or Angel of Death that he wasnt better than every other man in the genre
@@josephb404 I like to think of George Jones as a world class singer. Same with Hank Williams Sr., Merle Haggard, Johnny Cash, and Emmylou Harris. All world class - just different styles. That said, they all would mention George as the greatest pure singer. We're glad to be able to hear them sing.
I had an uncle through marriage that opened a few of George and Tammy's local shows in Fl. I was about 12 the first time I got to meet them, I still have their autographs. 52 yrs later.
May not be the greatest Country song of all time but it is arguably the saddest !! His "Walk Through This World with Me" was our wedding song. Another great song by GJ. Oh hell, they are all great songs.
@@whatsforafters7843 Very welcome 🤗 grew up listening to George Jones in my teenage years and remember my parents always going to Georgie Jones concerts lol of great memories back then thank you 🙏 ♥️🤗
Robert, I am listenting to this song and now I am having a "Pity Party". One of these old days I will have you totally out of my heart and mind. Hope it won't take a visit from the Death Angel to make me forget you.
George & Tammy was the best Duo ever sung together. Shame they're not Herr Together any lore. Thanks Jay for hanging on with all your beautiful cars. Lol!
According to the Ken Burns "Country Music" documentary on PBS, George Jones didn't want to record this song. He didn't like it, and he didn't think it would do well. But they kept pushing him to record it. When he finished, he said something like "okay, there's your damn song, and it won't sell a single record." It was his biggest hit of his career - - by far.
It is a shame that there are not many more occasions where George would make appearances on the late night talk shows (and even do a short interview), but I guess he was just a bit too modest for all that. I've always wondered if he ever made an appearance on the Tonight Show with Johnny Carson?
MSASteeler, It is a shame that Mr. Jones didn't appear much outside of the Nashville circuit on mainstream television.... I remember him appearing often on The Porter Wagoner Show, for example, when I was still a kid, but, after a quick look on the Internet, searching Johnny Carson, Jack Paar & Steve Allen, there seems to be no instance of George Jones appearing on those programs before. As my father has often remarked: "hillbilly" acts weren't given much attention in major metropolitan areas, like NYC, for example, back in the 50's and 60's, on mainstream television, let alone radio. We'll have to be grateful that we have so many great recordings to go back to, when it comes to a "one of a kind", like George Jones.... Thanks for stopping by!
Folks sometime tell me they don't like country music, I ask them " you don't like Johnny Cash ? you don't like Patsy Cline ? you don't like George Jones ? you don't Like Elvis Presley?
The way Ron Gaddis looks at George and pays attention to him tells you how much Ron loved and adored George. It’s ironic that Ron got the boot from the band because of his alcoholism considering George’s history with alcohol abuse.
Folks sometime tell me they don't like country music, I ask them " you don't like Johnny Cash ? you don't like Patsy Cline ? you don't like George Jones ? you don't Like Elvis Presley?
My poor mom loved my father for 30 years after he left us all for a younger woman. She would be so happy when he was around. Two weeks before she died she said what I wouldn't give for me and your dad to be together living in Sominole ,and you kids to be little again. Dad didn't come to her funeral. Not surprising at all.
aside from the opry broadcast on network TV & Nashville's TV shows like the numerous Ralph emery, Johnny cash TV show I can only think of the jimmy dean show, wilburn bros, porter show, him and tammys appearance on the midnight special as far as U.S. appearances, he did a lot in Canada I see here called Ronnie prophet.
Everytime he sang it, he sang a little bit differently. I am not sure when Tammy nearly died from the bile duct infection, but I thought it was around the time of this broadcast.
As much as I respect and love what he dose, I would have to say hes not drunk but definitely had a few. I was a alcoholic for many moons, and we veterans of the shine can spot the signs .
He lived to about 82 so to hell with it. He had problems as most singers do. The man had a tallent and a voice unlike any singer. I got to see him several times. Theres been a lot of good singers but no1 will ever beat the possum on how to sing a country song. I got to see conway twitty in one of his last concerts another hell of a singer. When I was young I got to see faron young ray price and merle haggard.Old country was good but its went down hill like nascar and a lot of other things. But old george really did have a different voice.
People try to portray men as emotionally detached, but this song is a perfect example of our loyalty. When we fall in love with a woman we do for life.
Amen
So right and that's my favorite song of his
He wisely found the love of his life in Nancy.
Very well said
He didn’t write this song
There will never be another George Jones singing the most iconic country song ever made...RIP
Amen
Amen and amen, mate.
I love how the base player and guitarist can't stop smiling. It's like they can't believe their luck, playing with George.
They're his regulars.
@@thejdogcool It's still nice to see that they had so much admiration for him.
Ron Gaddis played bass and sang backup vocals with George Jones for 26 years
Ron and George played together for many years. They went together very well.
Yes George and Ron played off each other and complimented each other well.
My Dad loved George Jones. Listened to him all the time. I think this is one the greatest love song ever written.
So many Country Music Artists have been called The King, but George Jones will always be The King in my book !!!
Tear up every time he sings. Definitely the Greatest Country Singer Of all time.
I think he undoubtedly would have been even better had he been more sober.
I lost the the love of my life on November 99 I will love her till the day I die!!!!
This is my favorite song of George's no one could sing it like him it was written jUST FOR HIM!!
You are so right Lynn and what a voice even later on in years he still sings with that same voice
I remember listening to this song for years as a kid. Not really getting it. Then the words they placed a wreath upon his door, was finally understood. Thanks for the memories.
The finest country singer to ever come down the pike. R.i.P. George Jones

Indeed the greatest country singer of all time
The best song about unrequited love ever written. Arguably the best country song ever.
It's still the greatest country song ever!! Sorry David Allen Coe.
George Jones the greatest country singer great my dad had all his records God rest his souls
Webster's dictionary defines "legend" as George Jones. I would go so far as to say "epic legend"
I had an uncle through marriage that opened a few of George and Tammy's local shows in Fl. I was about 12 the first time I got to meet them, I still have their autographs. 52 yrs later.
Lucky you. I am jealous. Wish I could have seen him play live.
A one-of-a-kind distinctive voice. Just amazing. This is pure country music.
I always well up when I hear him sing this song. Greatest song ever recorded.
This song will be played at my funeral because I love the only i can the one I married in June 11 1983 i will love you FOREVER JUDY no matter!!!!!!!
Old Possum always delivered. Best country song every written, hands down.
What a legend! Truly none like him anymore. RIP GEORGE JONES!
GUCH I LOVE THIS man GEORGE JONES 🎤🎸The ONE and Only 💕💕💕
Classic song that has made me cry many times when I was drinking in a bar with my future ex girlfriend(s).
May not be the greatest Country song of all time but it is arguably the saddest !! His "Walk Through This World with Me" was our wedding song. Another great song by GJ. Oh hell, they are all great songs.
I love this arrangement with a single fiddle rather than a big string section.
always slightly different ALWAYS amazing lucky us to have lived in his time, the world wont have another
My all time favorite, you'll never get over your first real love I know I didn't and this song says it all for me
Jones' autobiography is a kickass read. Came out about the time of this show.
Greatest country song of all time.
The King Of Country Music Right There.
No one could draw into a song like Lones and make you feel like you were right there
You mean jones
Brings back memories of George Jones good days thank you 🙏 ♥️♥️

My all-time favorite. One of 3 which will be played at my memorial. 🥰
Wow, a real country singer in a talk show. It's normally pop or rock
It's a rarity for sure. At least they chose a real legend.
Robert, I am listenting to this song and now I am having a "Pity Party". One of these old days I will have you totally out of my heart and mind. Hope it won't take a visit from the Death Angel to make me forget you.
SO MUCH TALENT FOR ONE MN NO ONE WILL REPLACE THE POSSUM!!
Love listening to George sing,he seemed a very nice humble man.
The song writers placed a crown on George's head when they wrote this song! He couldn't have wished for anything better.
George & Tammy was the best Duo ever sung together. Shame they're not Herr Together any lore. Thanks Jay for hanging on with all your beautiful cars. Lol!
This is one of Georges best songs but it's funny because he absolutely hated it LOL
This is true. But, started liking it all the way to the bank.
AMAZING live performance voice!!!
AWESOME SONG GEORGE JONES. HE LOOKS AWESOME ON THE TONIGHT SHOW. WITH JAY LENO.

Even late in his career, none better.
You're sorely missed, Possum!
I love this song💕💕💕💕❣️
George was letterman twice and jimmy fallon in 06 n 09. I do believe this is his lone tonight show appearance.

The way Ron Gaddis looks at George and pays attention to him tells you how much Ron loved and adored George. It’s ironic that Ron got the boot from the band because of his alcoholism considering George’s history with alcohol abuse.

No lights no glitter fancy sound equipment just a man and his voice..

Well I would say there might be a tie with my boy George Jones
They don’t get any better!!
Folks sometime tell me they don't like country music, I ask them " you don't like Johnny Cash ? you don't like Patsy Cline ? you don't like George Jones ? you don't Like Elvis Presley?
A great example of 'twist in the middle' story telling.

He is the man RIP George
AWESOME SONG BY GEORGE JONES ON THE TONIGHT SHOW WITH JAY LENO.
Legend forever!
This song was and is real life…and death for so many people. Great song and lyrics. The Possum at his best.

the man singing is RON GADIS his bass player
It's not ron Gaddis he hadn't been with george in about 5 or 6 years

Sir George !!!
Everytime he sang it, he sang a little bit differently. I am not sure when Tammy nearly died from the bile duct infection, but I thought it was around the time of this broadcast.
I love Allan Jackson singing this but why the fuck would I not love the GEORGE JONES ORIGINAL there will never be better RIP Georgie
Guys in the band shaking their heads at George jumping around a little.
wow!
The song was a good one
Does anyone know what the mans name is that was singing backup for George?
That is Ron Gaddis, George's right hand man for many years.
He stopped loving her the first time he hit her. 😳
It looks like basketball great Larry Bird is playing the blue guitar behind George Jones, but to his left, shortly after the video begins.
Hank Sr. Is the greatest of all time. But ole Possum in the top 5.
He thought this song was to SAD to sing & no one would buy it.
There's a switch the possum shows up and someone else don't..
he seams sober here? no?
As much as I respect and love what he dose, I would have to say hes not drunk but definitely had a few. I was a alcoholic for many moons, and we veterans of the shine can spot the signs .
Gosh, they both got those close together possum eyes. Their eyes are just too close
Booze killed him
He got clean before he died. Maybe complications from drugs and alcohol he had done before he got clean.
