I am a George Jones fan by the grace of God. How empty my life would have been if it had not been touched by George Jones. I am so grateful that I was alive on this earth when Mr. Jones was. A beautiful man who truly wrote beautiful heart touching and heartbreaking songs. RIP.

I was lucky enough to see George live in Pensacola FL sometime around 2000 or 2001. It was a masterful performance. He was well past his prime, but my God he held the audience in the palm of his hand. But while he was in his 40's and 50's he was at the peak of his power. He is the greatest country music singer of all time, and that will remain so forever.

I was also lucky enough to see him, maybe 4 or 5 years before he passed. He was in his 70's and didn't move around much on stage anymore, but to me his voice still sounded great.
I saw him at a little outdoor venue called Indian Ranch, in Webster, MA. It's a small venue, right on a lake, with probably 1200 or 1500 seats. It's a great place to see a concert, but it kind of saddened me that a legend like Jones was so underappreciated that he was playing to such small crowds, while so many second rate acts fill huge arenas.
I still have a tee shirt I bought that day. IT doesn't fit, but I'll never throw it out.

For me he is the best country music artist and one of the if not the greatest artist of any genre. I mostly appreciate how his soul and experiences are poured through his music. He has a way of making me feel the struggles and the pain associated with heart break mostly associated with addiction. One very important factor that was highlighted in this he book The Grand Tour by Rich Kienzle was that when his father went on his alcoholic benders he would make George perform for him and guests for entertainment. It was described that all of the kids would get whipped if they didn’t comply and the dad liked hearing the youngest George the most so George would often perform to protect his siblings. It is said throughout that George’s gift was also his curse and that he battled with this and substances throughout his life never feeling good enough.

I can't say George is my all-time favorite, but his heartbreak song, "He Stopped Loving Her Today" is a freaking MASTERPIECE! One of the best songs of ANY genre! (And this comes from someone who loves Rock, Soul, R&B, Blues -- just about any type of music).

Being a child of the 60's My Momma loved George, we were prisoners in the car, she listened to Country Loud.. I was ecstatic when I finally got a radio of my own. ,Life has its struggles, I would have to fight my own demons and alcohol. Lots of honky tonk bars, bar fights, missed days of work. The teamsters sent me to rehab. I didn't have a clue what it was or what was coming. I turned back to George and his familiar sound, George just understood and Jimmy Swagget was trying to save me soul. I still listen to George, I cried the day he died, there Wil NEVER be another George Jones.

I worked one of his concerts I told the crew when he sang “He Stopped Loving Her Today “ I would go off by myself. One month before this song came out my husband at the age of 33 had a heartache and passed. Driving down the road loving his music of course I did not know what the song was about just yet. When he sang They Put A Wreath upone his door I jerk the car off the road and cried it seemed like forever. Then all these years later I worked his concert. I just sat in my little spot and again seemed like I cried forever. Can .you even imagine that you would ever come this close to the man who sang this song. Another very great song is “How Can I Help You Say Goodbye “. I had the chorus put on my mom’s headstone. Sang by Pattie Loveless “ it will break your heart if you loved your mom as much as I do. I have never been able to “ Say Goodbye “

And in today's Country Music world, they would have sent him home and told him not to come back when he hit town. The music these days can't even spell Country, much less sound like it. Thank God for RUclips, Sirius XM, Pandora and the like. Murder on Music Row called it right on the barrelhead. They killed Country Music, cut out it's heart and soul. They got away with murder, down on Music Row.

When Johnny Cash was asked who his favorite country singer was, he said “you mean besides George Jones, right?” He was your favorite country singer’s favorite country singer. Jones didn’t write many songs, but he could interpret them better than anyone. In his autobiography he talks about how he imagined himself in the lyrics’ story while singing, which definitely contributed to how much emotion pours through the microphone. He also said 95% of his recordings were done drunk haha but we all knew that 😉

I would have waited, like you. Lucky for me, he showed up on time and ready every time. One time, a short while before show time, two men came out onto the stage carrying a small armchair and table, which they set downstage left, with the chair at a convenient angle to the microphone. A couple of minutes later, one of them came back out with Miss Nancy on his arm. She sat through the entire set, calmly composed. Every once in a while, their eyes met. That interaction added another dimension to the performance.

This is an intelligently presented biographical sketch, beautifully edited and seemingly accurate, and narrated by a nice human voice. I was hoping to have a thorough discussion about how the Possum's voice was used so uniquely to present and interpret song and how others in the industry perceived his voice as instrument, but even though this program doesn't really dig much into that it still serves as a good introductory biography. Jones certainly is one of the important figures in American popular music.

So many great songs. Still doing time, If Drinking don't kill me, The grand tour, the slamming of the door, etc. , etc. Did he have great voice? No. Was his style conventional? No. But it was the fact that he was an original and when he sang these songs it was a gut punch of authenticity. It sounds like he was living it. Even his fun songs like Od King Kong (was just a little monkey compared to my love for you), Yabba dabba doo (the king is gone and so are you), and his duet with Ray Charles, I didn't see a thing were just great entertaining songs. He was the greatest country singer of all time.

He Stopped Loving Her Today is one of the best Country Music Songs of ALL TIME & is one of my Husband’s favorite songs & mine & his favorites is Who’s Gonna Fill Their Shoes & it is also Iconic cause we’re still waiting for someone that’s able to fill George & Conway’s (Hello Darlin) shoes among others. There are some that have come close & those that have left shoes of their own to fill like George Strait, Alan Jackson, Toby Keith, Randy Travis, to name a few. Country, thanks ( no thanks ) to Record Label Execs & Country Radio is changing Country to Pop/Rap/Hip Hop not real COUNTRY, they won’t Sign Real Country Artist, won’t Play them on Radio & say People/Fans don’t want to hear it & that’s not true & most real Country Fans listen to the stations that play the old Country Music & listen to New Real Country Artists on RUclips & TikTok & they are gaining Popularity & Fame & Fans on those outlets. 👏👏👏👏🎶🎵🎶🎤🎶🎵🎶🎤🎶🎵🎶

If George’s talent would have been baseball, he’d have retired with a .700 batting average and 1800 home runs. That’s how good George Jones was! Untouchable!!

I grew up in Beaumont,TX. 70’s & 80’s. It’s not the same town today. 70’s and 80’s were the prime years for the Golden Triangle area. It was kinda nice back then but all the Storms have ravaged this area. George Jones is from Beaumont. Never ran into him but I did run into Johnny & Edgar Winter. They are from there too. They lived about mile from my house, same neighborhood. Caldwood Neighborhood. We would always go to the Winters brothers house on to Trick or Treat on Halloween. They were super cool and gave us a ton of candy. Way more than other people would. Always smiling. Johnny & Edgar were good dudes. Great people. Johnny passed but Edgar lives. George Jones was a hell of a singer but a little bit of a Drunk.

Actually the grand tour tells a story of a man who lost his wife and their child who both pass during childbirth.
“There’s her rings all her things and her clothes in the closet like she left them when she tore my world apart, as you leave you’ll see the nursery, she left me without mercy, taking nothing but our baby and my heart”
