  • George Glenn Jones (September 12, 1931 - April 26, 2013) was an American country musician, singer, and songwriter. He achieved international fame for his long list of hit records, including his best-known song "He Stopped Loving Her Today", as well as his distinctive voice and phrasing. For the last two decades of his life, Jones was frequently referred to as the greatest living country singer.[1][2] Country music scholar Bill Malone writes, "For the two or three minutes consumed by a song, Jones immerses himself so completely in its lyrics, and in the mood it conveys, that the listener can scarcely avoid becoming similarly involved." The shape of his nose and facial features earned Jones the nickname "The Possum".[3] Jones has been called "The Rolls Royce of Country Music" and had more than 160 chart singles to his name from 1955 until his death in 2013.
Born in Texas, Jones first heard country music when he was seven, and was given a guitar at the age of nine. His earliest influences were Roy Acuff and Bill Monroe, although the artistry of Hank Williams and Lefty Frizzell would crystallize his vocal style. He married his first wife, Dorothy Bonvillion, in 1950, and was divorced in 1951. He served in the United States Marine Corps and was discharged in 1953. He married Shirley Ann Corley in 1954. In 1959, Jones recorded "White Lightning", written by The Big Bopper, which launched his career as a singer. His second marriage ended in divorce in 1968; he married fellow country music singer Tammy Wynette a year later. Years of alcoholism compromised his health and led to his missing many performances, earning him the nickname "No Show Jones".[3] After his divorce from Wynette in 1975, Jones married his fourth wife, Nancy Sepulvado, in 1983 and became sober for good in 1999. Jones died in 2013, aged 81, from hypoxic respiratory failure.

Tammy and George were amazing. I miss both of them sooo much. My husband and I toured with the two of them the whole time they were married. We toured with Geoge before and after Tammy. He was our very best friend for over 20 years. We wrote many songs together and love having him as my brother in law. He was married to my sister Linda when he met Nancy. Linda and George never did get a legal divorce but George married Nancy any way later on And was still living with her when he died. That was such a sad day. We will always love both George and Tammy. She was a lovely lady. Ee had some good times together. Wish they had never separated. They were a perfect couple just couldn't get everything going the way they should have gone. I'm all for both of them. They were good people , but had personal problems with each other. There are so many of the people we were involved with that have passed away. It's certainly sad, but it happens to all of us and we have to go on and accept what ever life dishes out. We just reall miss them

Charlene would be so interesting to talk with you, especially after watching George and Tammy on showcase. Are you on any platform that would facilitate questions and answers, or an email address? I am just a fan with questions. Nothing more nothing less. Thanks for your comments.

My friend's dad either wrote or co wrote "Green Green Grass of Home and He Stopped Loving Her Today". Those 2 songs alone is a career but he wrote lots of songs. Curly Putman Jr. AKA Junior from Paul McCartney's "Junior's Farm". I was a wild ass in my youth too and all my using friends are dead too. I don't know why I'm still here even though my body seems to be failing me. I have nice hair too maybe it's in the hair. lol

I love how George reacts when they talk about his hair. A mixture of pride and slight embarrassment. It’s cute!
