When I was about 5 years old, sometime back in the 80s, I lived near Nashville. We were going down the highway and we came up on a limo with "the possum" written on the side. The windows were tinted except for the front ones. We drove up past it and George Jones was driving it himself, he looked over and waved at me. Awesome thing. RIP No Show

Amen. You said it all right here. I spent my younger years (decades of them) following this man's music ... his style, his overall being George Jones. I reached a point where others tried to talk me into attempting a career of my own. In my opinion tho, there was only room for ONE George Jones, and he was it. Tho duplicity has been attempted, I my opinion no one on earth could have the right to copycat his style and his work. I'm satisfied that many said I had mastered his style and sound. That was good enough for me. It did absolutely nothing for George Jones, but it meant much to me. God Bless and rest George Jones.

It's been almost ten years now since George Jones passed, and I still really miss him. I love how he was always never afraid to speak his mind when it came to the state of country music. It makes me sad to think how upset he'd be about the direction mainstream country has gone in the last ten years, if he was still alive. It's only gotten much worse since he passed, I'm afraid. I really do wish most of the modern "country" singers would just create their own genre, maybe "southern pop," which is a much more accurate label for what they're doing.

It makes me sad as well, the fact that we are still talking about him is great. Music may evolve but most of today’s country is not country at all, I’m so glad we still have Alan Jackson, George Straight and of course Willie, I go see Dwight Yoakam every time he’s near me and he always does a special tribute to Merle, music can evolve forever but traditional classic country is the best, Ray Price was a good one.

    • @thatgirlthatsme
      @thatgirlthatsme 3 года назад +17

I understood what he meant. We can't bring these real country music singers back but we can keep their music alive. We are doing it now because we have RUclips. Radio stations are forgetting about them and the new artists are moving in and changing the way country music is supposed to sound. They are good singers but they don't need to be on the Grand Ole Opry stage or call their music county music. They need their own identity like George said. Call it something else.
I'm thankful for RUclips and for people who are keeping real country music and our legends alive with channels like this one. ❤

These are a new generation of listeners calling themselves country fans when the sound they are listening to shouldn't be called country music as it has changed far too much from its original style. .so yes... Jones is right here. Call it something else.

George is one of a kind. There'll never be another George. But that don't mean there will never be any more country music artist. I mean REAL country that George is talking about. There's no comparison to the real country music he is talking about to the new country music today. We all miss the real country music artist that when you turn the radio on you know who the artist is the minute you hear them sing. The kind of artist that becomes legends and are legends forever. Today it's hard to know who is who when you hear a new song on the radio. There's usually a lot more music than singing. The songs are more about who wrote it than what's it's saying. Some artist wollow their words around in their mouth so much that its a chore to have to listen closely to know what they are saying. I like listening to the words of a song and relating to it. I love the story type songs that leaves you something to think about. All this high pitched picking and singing gets on my nerves. I like some of it and respect all the new artist but I wish there could be both THE REAL AND THE NEW so all of us could enjoy country music as we know it.

Well , he didn't get to see traditional country music come back before he passed away and it still hasn't changed. I agree with him on that . It's not that It's not good music , but it's just not country music . Just like when Elvis 1st started out he was a trendsetter and started out singing rock-n-roll . Which in my opinion Elvis Presley could sing anything. Country rock sounds a lot like what people use to call Rock- a- billy to me. Or maybe it just should come up with it's own name . Anyway...I got to see George Jones twice at Lanier Land in Ga. My step grandmother went one time to see him play and he really didn't show up . That was back when he got the name No Show Jones . LOL! I've grew up listening to his music and loved it and always will . He definitely will be missed . Thanks for sharing this great interview. RIP George

I'm off to listen to Hank's "You Win Again", "Today I Started Loving You Again" by Hag, and Vince Gill's "When I Call Your Name". If they're good enough for George they's good 'nuff for me.

To get back to real country music, we would have to resurrect all the wonderful singers that have passed on, plus, the younger generation of this era want the fast moving type songs, and never being brought up in the country music, that is truth, love, sadness, happiness, they don’t want this, they feel they have heard it all, but, until they come to a point in their lives where they need the lord, they need to listen to the music, And the life stories of the lives these singers sang about, before they made it in music, they sang about their lives and sorrows, until then I am afraid it will take a long time. The best is gone, so hopefully some day their memories will be brought back in others music.

Still blows my mind that he got to meet Hank when he was a kid.
And how Hank couldn't have known that George would go on to become a legend himself, similar to the caliber to what Hank ended up becoming. And he never got to see it.
And George very well had became a legend in part because of that advice Hank gave him.

I was Blessed to take my then girlfriend, my son and daughter-in-law to see him live on his 60th. birthday in Marion, Ohio. At tge time I had some 'inside influence' with the people who ran the event .... Photos were arranged, but George must have been 'celebrating his birthday' on the bus .... It didn't happen! Lol .... We never held it against him tho .... we took our seats and enjoyed the greatest country act ever. Other than having missed the opportunity to meet him, no regrets.

PURE country ! NEVER will be any comparison to George n country. Right with him is ole Waylan. Those two were always country. These screamin kids today are NOT country ! I would be thrilled beyond words for someone to
    Sing a real country song.
Sure there are a few others. But these will always be the best !

It’s hard to go back in time, it’s hard to change history it’s hard to bring back some thing that has evolved into something else, but with some effort it can be sang and honored and immortalized till the end of time ; if only people will embrace musical roots , and the artists that brought them to us 👍👍👍⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️🎶🎵🎵🎵🎶🎵🎶🎶⭐️♥️👍

Did beginners really feel uncomfortable when they "looked (George Jones) in the eye" and did he actually "make them nervous" even though he "didn't mean to"? I get the impression that most anyone would be comforted in the presence of George Jones rather than stressed out.
