apparently King Aelle and his "army" leaders never heard of scouts.
In the actual history, Ivar pretended to have small number of army then lured him to a suprise attack.
@@confusedcaveman5678 Yes the writers kinda in a way used that in the battle against Athelwolf and Ecberts army in Wessex.
Yup they seems pretty stupid indeed
The show Vikings are extremely inaccurate its only fiction. I find it funny how many people think it is good as a historical source.
Zid02 many of The characters in The show have been real Vikings. And The events in The show have happened just Not by The Vikings in The show and Not in that short Timeline!
Let's all appreciate how good the actor for King Aelle is.
He made me hate the character so much thats good acting
@@alex360c Ælle did nothing wrong
@@alex360c and he still made me feel bad for him when he said " how much gold and silver u want for sparring my life ? ".
He actually played Ragnar in something else.

Respect to King Aelle for actually being with his army during the war
Back in the day king had to lead army to battle especially since small nation like his could only afford 1 army so couldn't let someone else command it.
@@wattpad3094I think he ment more of he was impressed it seemed like he was fighting on the front lines because usually with the exception of a few most stayed back and acted as more of a stregic general moving troops etc
AElla expected a force of several hundred, at best. It was his arrogance to underestimate the Vikings thát badly. He showed up wit ha sizable force: ~3000? Maybe a bit more?
The Great Heathen Army was ATLEAST 15.000 to 20.0000! Each of the warriors would best a Northumbrian soldier.. 2 to 1, 3 to 1 even? So for Aella to stand a chance against this onslaught, his army had to be atleast 10x as large!!
But being King of Northumbria, he had no choice then to stay ad lead his army ....into its doom! Fleeing would have only angered the Vikings more, as it was an act of cowardice. As it would also completely demoralize his troops on the field there, giving them even less of a chance to atleast dimnish some of the Viking's numbers...
Aella knew, once he saw the real size of the Great Heathen Army, he was done for... all he could do, was maintain his honor, and lead his troops in a less-humiliating defeat, in the hopes that the other Kingdoms of England would have a better chance on facing this vást force...
Later in the show however, you see how Ivar 'strategically toys' with Aethelwulf, and sends/lures him right to where they want him? Wessex had actually mustered almost ALL its militairy, to face the Vikings, yet were lured into an ambush! It was a hard fight, but even Aethelwulf, bringing the strongest of England's armies to face the Vikings, was vastly outnumbered and never stood a chance!
@@thegreenreaper6660 His arronence was his doom, he should have sent out scouts and then he would have knew that he has 0 chance with such a small force against the Vikings. He should have get all the fighting capable man possible, send delegates to Wexes and join forces with them.

good one. very good.
@Matte Matte Its actually not known but speculated how big the army was. Its all speculation. Just thought Id let you know.
@Matte Matte Well not all history. But a lot of it yes. And there are some historians who speculate that there was at least 3000 in the great heathen army. You stated 1000 like it was fact. If that was not your intention then my apologies. Hopefully we find more evidence. Until then all we can do is guesstimate. I really hope we find more evidence. Theres got to be. It was such a crucial time for Englands medieval history.

“I don’t think he can” the wisest words ever said by King Aelle throughout his Reign.
A blasphemous statement nonetheless.
Good thing Aella was fully prepared.
Morten Aass Authen For a Blood Eagle you mean?
Yeah, that... But he couldn't know that, actually. Ragnar had come without warriors or sons, so how was he supposed to imagine they'd come after him with such a force when Ragnar was dead as Ragnar himself hadn't even been able to muster a small force anymore when he was still alive? Also, he knew what a large Viking force looked like from back in Season 2 when they defeated the united army of two jarls and one king and I bet he had prepared for that size. Plus, after Ragnar was dead, he probably thought that it came down to a game of numbers now because he had recognized that the real danger was Ragnar's brain. Well, it did, after all, just not in the way he had thought...
@@Reguwudo Ah, well, you're pointing to the one instance that is totally inexplicable foolish behaviour indeed but that can't actually be blamed on the character but on bad, careless writing because it's completely out of tune with the rest of what we've seen of the King Aelle (and when you reach a point where a character's actions can't be explained within the framework of his personality and profile anymore, then the writer has screwed up). Mr. Hirst must actually have thought the audience are idiots as well as, OF COURSE, Aelle MUST have known about the size of the army from the guy who brought the news of their landing and had SEEN them already - and, OF COURSE, there is no sensible explanation why he wouldn't have sent out scouts if he had any doubts. He had been a king in a very competitive environment for quite a while and it's clear he had fought successful battles way before his alliance with Ecbert as well, so it's completely unthinkable that with all that experience he wouldn't have taken basic measures of warfare that even *I* know, irrespective of the fact that admittedly, he wasn't the greatest strategist ever. That only shows you how the writer actually thought that the audience wouldn't notice how badly this was written and conceptualized (just because he didn't have any interest in the character after he had brought in Ecbert, which is obvious from a lot of hints, in interviews and in the show itself). The point where I disagree is the evaluation of the talk about "the Great Heathen Army" because that could've been rumours spread intentionally as a device of psychological warfare and Aelle was pretty good at perceiving that and would never fall for without further corroboration - yet, I agree that he would've known for long by the time he started marching out. Awful writing - but he always does that when he wants to make characters look smart: he makes others look like idiots in certain scenes, no matter if it fits the general characterization or not.
Yes for death

Caboose fast forward to now ....
@@AlejandroSanchez-pl6jw They have ruined his character.
Matt Nar I had a feeling floki would end up like this because he was too religious since he killed Athelstan
Floki was the greatest character of the show imho. No matter what, he always stayed true to what he loved: to the gods and to Ragnar. He always had faith and good intentions. He wished all the best to his people and did everything to please them. Still, he was betrayed, tortured, and then died finding out that what he dedicated his life to, was a lie. Hail Floki, the true Viking.
Shreyas Misra Also Floki is said to be a reincarnation of Loki. My second time watching the series i noticed a lot of similarities between Floki and Loki. Some people suspect Floki is alive and he will become the seer.
That 'Oh shit' moment when King Ælla saw what was coming.

I feel sorry for Aelle. He was an idiot, but he wasn't the villain in the story. The Vikings attacked his kingdom, murdered, raped or kidnapped his subjects, and killed his brother.
Ragnar and the olde guard are awesome characters, but don't be fooled- they are the bad guys
there are no good guy
Of course they are. I know too many young boys, too green to be called men yet, are admiring the ways of the Vikings and the Mongols and the Huns. They admire their raiding and their raping and pillaging. But it takes a lot more to admire defending your own lands and building a lasting society and culture.
Valentine Radushev survival of the fittest. You can’t defend yourselves or land they will be taken
Flawed logic
Valentine Radushev I mean not really. And the norsemen and the mongols are staples in history they have spread their genes far and wide and have made a huge impact on the world and the course that it went. And what good is your kingdom if you can even defend it. Like i said the weak don’t survive and the strong do it’s the natural order of things.
This has to be one of the most beautiful scenes in the entire show. When Floki and the rest of the vikings comes over the hill and joined, i for one couldn't help smile :-D
Shame we never saw the "battle". Those 6 seconds would have been awesome.
Agree 100%
"Battle"? This was probably thé most one-sided and quickest slaughter in the history of warfare!
Imagine those Northumbrians, shitting their pants, where fár superiorly skilled Viking warriors and Berserkers, pumped with anger and adrenaline, would just cut them down. I imagine the backlines of Aella's army did try to flee... in vain. Only the frontrows: several hundred men would actually try and fight the vástly overwhelming numbers of the Viking army... 20:1? 50:1 in terms of actual people fighting? The rest were just hunted down, and butchered for the cowards they were. Vikings hated cowards: to FLEE from a fight, no matter the odds, was one of thé greatest sins in their beliefs.
Those 6 seconds were awesome, that's what my wife said to me last night.

can agree or not with me but aelle is a victim of everyone in this series, ragnar crushed him and killed his brother, ecberth used him like a pawn and made his daughter his mistress, and got killed defending his kingdom, maybe he was selfish, and stupid but everyone took advantage of him, poor men.
everyone took advantage of him because he was stupid.
He is responsible for his brother's death. If he cared more about his family, instead of money, his brother would be alive
He wanted the recognition of killing Ragnar, he just didn't think of the implications of all the North Men coming at him at once.
@Shreyas Misra Also the power he got from Jarl to King made his life more miserable because of all the responsibility. He lost the love of his life(thats his fault actually) and abandoned his peacefull life in the farm proving that money and power dont bring happiness.Lets also not forget that he willingly died to prove that Gods dont exist and Men decided for their own about their lifes.Pretty sad life if you put aside all the glory and fame he got among his people and counrty.Nonetheless a badass character both in Tv and real life
@Shreyas Misra Thats what makes it even sadder. He basically lost everything in order to stay King .Not that he wanted too but because he was the King his people needed

Floki's exaggerated swagger of a Heathen

Love how Ivar is running the opposite way of everyone else
I found this quite satisfying. I disliked that sanctimonious prig of a king. Karma is a bitch, ain't it King Ælla. Next up King Ecbert.
I never thought Ecbert was that bad. Clearly in it for his own interests but he is a pretty ok guy. Also I think that historically he survived.
Well, the series plays loose and fast with history and heroic myth. Floki recognized that Rollo the Betrayer would eclipse them all in fame and glory - after all, Rollo is the great great great grandfather of William the Conqueror.
but in the show he is the father of William The Conqueror
No, he has a son named William - different William - William the first known as William Longsword
The difference between Aella and Ecert is that Aella just looked like bad ass but Ecbert was really threat to vikings. I still think Ecbert deserves their hatred more than Aella because slaughtering the wessex settlement had a big impact on the vikings nation than anything Aella did. Same with Ragnar's dead, Ecbert decided Ragnar must die but not by him so he handed him to less smart Aella and washed his hands clean while Aella was satisfied to be able to kill him surrounded by 60 soldiers and after one hour of praying that nothing will go wrong. I really enjoy Ecberts character in this show.

What's the song called when Floki came over the hill?
Matt The Worst It's an epic piece called "Not on the Soundtrack" :(
Best people can tell it's a remix of "Vikings Battle Brihtwulf's Army", but that track is far less epic. I don't know if a clean version of this theme exists unless a fan-made surfaces someplace.
This was so satisfying. I watched it last night and I fell asleep during the episode. Last thing I remember was Lagertha killing the Earl. So needless to say when I woke up this morning i watched on my DVR. Fucking awesome!!
The killing of Aella was sickening and grotesque. Simply amazing! And when he saw the army and the vastness of it. Lol
I was pretty disappointed. I expected a battle like in the first seasons and an awesome blood eagle scene like the first one. What did I get instead? Boring love and ritual scenes. The dialogs had no relevance, no connection and everything felt rushed.
I think, they rushed the battle because Aelle was outnumbered so there was no point in showing it. The battle of Wessex, is where they put their money on.It should be the greatest battle of the series!!
Andreas Kerma
They still could have shown it in another way...there are better ways to put this in scene. This was just: cut, next scene, without any explaination.
+Herr Waescheklammer
I agree with u.. i didnt expect such a quick cut,, After all the hype in the promos. At least the final scene partially made up for it!
the reason they didnt show the battle was because of budget.. they can only have ONE great war.. and that we will get when they fight ecberts army.. i personally thought the episode was slow but it had its purpose.. and the last 15 mins were worth it being a slow episode,, they cant all be action packed.. they wanted to show the scale of the great army and they did just that..
