In the books, people feared the northerners because they were the most ruthless and wild. And in the north, Ned was probably the calmest northerner. He was calm, civil, orderly, and honorable. But ned often worried that Arya was possessed by the wildness. And here, we see what he meant. Arya is the north. Unfortunately, Robb was too much a Tully, and Sansa had to learn through pain how to be a northerner. Arya was always like this. Vicious, cunning, savage, and wild.
"wild" in the sense of unable to think calmly and clearly that could jeopardize survival for the group. You can see the wildness in the Wildlings in general. All the northern lords think wisely except they have a bad habit of thinking other people will keep their word which was ultimately Ned's and Robb's downfall.

You can really hear Arya's voice in Walder's, especially in the line "cut the throat of a mother of five.." when there's that slight lilt to show the shift in tone, it's really well done, props to the actors
Also, it’s great how she didn’t reveal herself to those that drank the poison, so that the Freys die feeling betrayed and confused just like the Starks did.
This is a great scene, at first we think this is a flashback because we know that Walder Frey is dead. The way the scene plays out is excellent. "When people ask what happened here, tell them the North remembers...tell them that winter came for House Frey." Chills every time. Total badass moment.
I think Maisie Williams deserves an Oscar for the way she played Ayra Stark.. Her cold dark fearless style is perfect, nothing seems to bother her! You can tell she's a West Country gal!!
@@omelett9 Since you're apparently unfamiliar with the show, the reason that Arya didn't bother to slaughter any of the Frey women is because none of the Frey women had the loyalty to the Frey name that Catelyn, Sansa, and Arya had to the Stark name. Walder's wives were chosen mostly as political maneuvers, most of them were barely a third of his age, and were to him very expendable (remember the one that Catelyn tries to use as a hostage during the Red Wedding). They had no real love for him or for the Frey name, and would have had no interest in avenging the Freys after Arya slaughtered the male side of the house. None of his daughters (trueborn or bastard) had the mind for the game, as most had been married off or were not interested in politics. Furthermore, none of them were directly involved in the events of the Red Wedding, whereas virtually all of the Frey males gathered in this scene were. And given that Arya found out about the Frey-Lannister plot that let to the massacre of the Starks, she would have known if any Frey women had been involved and probably would have killed them too.

"It wasn't for murder the gods cursed the Rat Cook, or for serving the King's son in a pie... he killed a guest beneath his roof... that's something the gods can't forgive."
The first throat clearing at 4:35 and the progressive cacophony...masterfully done. I had actually seen part of this before watching the series. My mouth was still on the ground during the red wedding and this.
"Leave One Wolf alive, and the sheep are never safe." -Arya Stark. "A Lion doesn't concern himself with the opinions of the sheep." -Tywin Lannister. The Starks and The Lannisters have been at each other's throats for centuries, one thing they have in common. they both hate sheep.
Wait did you say for centuries? To my knowledge, they didnt really have any issues with each other until this show started. They never really liked each other, but they werent going to war with each other until Bran peeked into the wrong window
This is why Arya was my favorite character. So badass. I particularly love how she made sure that the young servant girl did not drink the wine. She saved those girls.
That was his young wife, not servant girl. A servant would not be sitting and/or rising next to him. He was a pig, as explained many times throughout the series.
As much as I would love to think she wanted to save that girl, I'm sure it was to pass along the message. As the old saying goes, "Dead men tell no tales."
@@Jack-fe7rv Surely it was both. Killing an innocent girl (who was being raped regularly as well, I'm sure) would make Arya a proper villian, not anyone to cheer. She could have chosen the servant girl who was passing out the wine (and who we saw at the end of the scene) to tell the tale.

Each used their skills to maximum effect in the final two seasons and I loved that. Two very different but equally compelling depictions of feminine power.
Walders fate is foreshadowed in the episode after the red wedding. Bran talks about the rat king who is forced to eat his own children after killing guests under his roof (and serving them to their father in the form of pie). After bran finishes the story it cuts to Walders face as well

I have to give my love to this show for giving us moments i only wish we would finally get in the books. It sucks how bad the show ended, but arya killing all of house Frey will never go unappreciated
Too bad the show rushed past this. The political ramifications of the Starks wiping out the Freys would have been sorted out over the course of a few episodes back in the early seasons. They didn’t even mention which house became lords of the Twins smh
Reaction to first time watching this scene. "Oh ok a flashback" Waldor starts speech "Huh this is weird." Waldor keeps going "Wait what?" *Realization sets in* "Oh" People start coughing "OHHHHHHHHHHHHH SHITTTTTTTTT"
It's interesting that before revealing herself, Arya said "My lord" instead of "m'lord", as Tywin had warned her before. Had Walder been a more vigilant man, he'd notice it as Tywin did, and it's also a quick nod to the audience the real identity of the servant.
This is the sort of thing that gets you mythologized. I wouldn't be surprised if someone started a legend, about some spirit of Winter in a long black cloak, who watches over House Stark and avenged their deaths...
Exactly, I always thought there would remain a sense of mysticism to Arya Stark, and that she would be like the story they all tell the stark children, even though she's part of the starks, she is outlined as a lone wolf but still loyal to her fam. They ruined her character when she randomly became a voyager in the end. Now she's like Christopher Columbus with a random assassin history like
@@joehopkins8799 They butchered the story I agree But i dont think sending arya for a voyage was a bad idea by writers She got what she wanted but she never celebrates So instead of living rest of her life as king's sister She left westeros for more adventures And that is something arya would have most likely done if her character was based on real life
Honestly you can kinda hear it when she says she’s not wasting wine on a damn woman. She’s just making a generic sexist thing to say there and you can tell it doesn’t entirely resonate.
I just love back in S3 Walder Frey thought he got rid off the Starks for good ending their line but then Arya comes and actually end his ENTIRE line. Gold
This is undoubtedly the best and most badass scene in the entire show. Rooting for the Starks the entire series, this is the most satisfying revenge scene they could have made. The writing at the end is off the charts. "When people ask you what happened here, tell them the North remembers. Tell them, Winter, came for House Frey" ❤❤
Took a few years, but the Freys finally got what was coming to them. The fact that it was Arya alone made it all the more satisfying. Message was clear, Don't fuck with the North.
Jennifer Brewer I don't think so, don't get me wrong, I love Arya, she is a total badass, but I don't think she would make a good queen. Arya doesn't have much experience as a leader, or poltically savy, she more like a lone wolf, doing things herself and is a fighter not a leader, she also tends to be single minded, for example her desire for revenge regardless of the consequences, she doesn't look a the big picture or cares. She also doesn't have the charisma to inspire people around her or the patience get them to convince them to her. For example Arya even suggested executing the lords who were considering abandoning Jon, unlike Sansa who wanted placate them until Jon returned. Honestly Lyanna Mormont would be more suited as a Queen of the North than Arya, Lyanna has experience being a leader, she has the Charisma to inspire people and rally them arround her and she clearly has the respect of other lords, despite her age, just look at the meetings with the Northern lords.
Okay but imagine actually being one of the people who heard about this. Not anyone important, just random bannermen. Imagine being a random Lannister, some soldier who fights for Cersei but has maybe only seen her once or twice in his life. You're this soldier and all you know is that House Frey has been massacred and everyone is saying "Winter came for House Frey." I don't know about y'all but I'd shit myself.
@@startrek1992 Jon let go and then they attack. Ygritte rightly said he knows nothing. He himself admitted he hates to use sword and kill though he is best at it. Whereas Arya uses her skills with full interest and does justice.
I always loved the little detail at 3:47 where Arya does not start the speech about how they are all pieces of shit who murdered Robb and Talisa in their wedding and how them leaving one Stark alive meant their doom, until she makes sure that every single person in the room except for the women has drank their wine.
Well yeah she has to leave the room alive herself. I do feel like she loses the chance for them all to figure it out since they were already reacting to it right? but maybe that wasn’t the point. Like she already had that moment with wanting to make sure that Walder knew she was Arya Stark before he died.
At the time, I thought this was the best sequence in the entire GOT series. But now, rewatching it in 2024, I've decided it must be the best sequence im television history
I was thinking this was a flashback before the Red Wedding, then I thought it was a flashback shortly after it…or maybe just a late celebration. Then when Walder said “brave men. Butchering a pregnant woman and her baby. Slaughtering guests after inviting them into your house…” and the realization set in. A huge grin crept onto my face once I realized what was really going on.
Arya is our best chance for revenge. Jon is very honerable, and we love him for that. But we want justice and in this world, if you want justice you need to be smart and willing to do anything.
David and Maisie were so amazing in these scenes. His tiny moments and hints that he's not actually Frey, but Arya in disguise. And the look on Arya's face as she's holding his head back, right after slitting his throat...absolutely haunting. One of my all time favorite scenes from this show, and definitely one of the most satisfying.
I love how Arya developed as a character, into a cold, calculated killer. How she returns to the Twins after all she has learned and become. Such delicious justice. What a wonderful scene. And yes, I came here after the red wedding (which I just finished reading in the book so went back to the scene, wow). Arya is my favourite badass.

Rob was a big pussy.😂
Sansa had to learn to be like a Lannister -- a southerner. Robb was too much like Ned who is the stereotyped lord of Winterfell.
Arya was always my favourite Stark_The North Remembers
Ned calls it the wolf blood. Lyanna had a touch of it and his older brother Brandon more than a touch.
"wild" in the sense of unable to think calmly and clearly that could jeopardize survival for the group. You can see the wildness in the Wildlings in general. All the northern lords think wisely except they have a bad habit of thinking other people will keep their word which was ultimately Ned's and Robb's downfall.
Id argue this was the biggest power move by house stark, wiped out a whole great house of over 50 people without even drawing a blade

@@omelett9 She didn't kill any of the Frey women or children, just the men who participated in the Red Wedding.

Arya would make a badass Queen in the North.

My favorite bit is how the Freys die thinking Walder Poisoned them for fun
I love how Arya developed as a character, into a cold, calculated killer. How she returns to the Twins after all she has learned and become. Such delicious justice. What a wonderful scene. And yes, I came here after the red wedding (which I just finished reading in the book so went back to the scene, wow). Arya is my favourite badass.
I love how even after what Tywin told her, she still says,
“My lord.”
