@maciejl20 it is. After he left, a few of the city guards were sent to apprehend him but Selmy killed all his pursuers and was able to leave the city unharmed.
@maciejl20 i think you don't understand who Barristan Selmy was, the show didnt do much honor to him, but he was just a beast, when he said he could take those 5 guards he wasnt joking. His skills are on par with Arthur Dane, the sword of the morning. If he wanted, he could have killed those guards, the hound and the king
@maciejl20 This might be news to you, but the entire city guard wasn't by this single fucking gate. He was intercepted by 4 guards, it was reasonable to think this is enough for an unarmed men. Well, it wasn't. Did you think they sent thousands of people after him? Get a grip on reality.
The Hound was smart enough to know that someone like Barristan wouldn't talk shit. When he said he could cut through the 5 of them like carving a cake, The Hound reaching for his sword is like an "oh, shit, I know he ain't lying" moment.
Just goes to show how feared/respected Barristan was by the other warriors. I’m certain Selmy in his prime could have carved the Mountain a new asshole.
Best part about this in the books was Tyrion laying into Cersei for humoring Joffery in Barristan's dismissal. Barristan was a living legend among the small folk and any king he serves gains credibility by association. It was one of the only times Cersei actually admits to fucking up.
You get into an XP group with him in a mid-level dungeon, and he's doing double the DPS of anyone else because he has raid gear from three expansions ago.

Barristan Selmy quit his job like a fucking boss man. That sassy walk out. No fucks given. Barristan didn't give a shit about any of those arrogant wankers.
I love how Varys has respect for him and tries to defuse the situation, and how Hound still grabs his sword, despite there being entirety of Kingsguard. Hound knew Barristan wasn't joking when he said he could easily cut through all of them if he wanted.
barristan had so many good lines within the span of 3 minutes “only death relieves us of our sacred trust” “a man who profaned his blade with the blood of the king he swore to defend” “i am a knight, i shall die a knight” “even now, i can cut through the 5 of you like carving a cake” *“here boy. melt it down and add it to the others!”* a shame what d&d did to his character. he doesn’t even die that early on, not to mention he could’ve easily defended himself from the sons of the harpy if it was book accurate 😞
Well in the books he was punished, joffery sent 4 elite guards to kill him but selmy kills them even with being unarmed and unarmored that shows just how badass he really is.
He also says 'Melt it down and add it to the others' the other swords are all the swords of the enemys of aegon during aegons conquest to becoming king of westeros. so by saying this hes basically saying out loud that he is now the enemy of the king. And nobody does shit
He tried and failed in the books. In the show its apparent that no one wants to even come near him. He's possibly the greatest swordsman in their history..

Yeah the hound wasn't one to mess about, and he knew that Barristan Selmy was without a doubt the best swordsman in that room by a long way. If he wanted to he could have killed most of the kingsguard before janos slynt would have had enough time to shit himself.
According to GRRM Barristan fucking Selmy was the only one capable enough of taking on the legendary Arthur Dayne as long as Dayne wasn't using the sword dawn. That just speaks volumes about Selmy's badassness.
If you’ve ever read the books Ser Barristan’s reputation as a knight is unmatched. In his prime he would cut down dozens of men single handedly in combat
Barristan Selmy Draws his sword. The hound, who is, let's be honest, always down to throw down and choose violence and also is behind a layer of fully armoured Kingsguard, *hesitates.* The only other thing that makes him hesitate in the series is fire, his greatest fear. That's really all ya need to know 😅
@@troyjohnson1186 He is likely one of the few people the hound actually respects. Although in truth I don't see the hound truly respecting anyone. Just sees blind loyalty at that point. Can respect him as a swordsman though.
Stannis The Mannis seriously? You ever heard of how he rescued the mad king during the defiance of duskendale? Arthur Dayne was the best swordsman that ever lived, but according to GRRM, Arthur Dayne would tie with Barristan if he does not wield Dawn
Really subtle visual storytelling: The Kingsguard draw their swords just a split second after Barristan, Janos only reacts and puts his hand on his sword hilt after they've already drawn their swords (showing the clear difference in skill), and the Hound just calmly rests his hand on his hilt (he's not being slow, he just doesn't care that much since there's already 5 Kingsguard in front of him, but he still gets ready just in case).
I’m pretty sure the Hound jumped on that sword hilt. He respected and knew of Barristan’s skill enough to know that once Selmy killed everyone else, it would be a 1v1 fight with the Hound.
The fact that the hound gives a reaction at all shows how threatening baristans sword must be. The hound normaly dont gives a hoot about any danger but once selmy draws his sword he gets ready cause he knows damn well that barristan would have cut through the rest of the kingsguard, like cake
Even though he was all the way in the back we can still see the Hound preparing himself, a sign of respect for Ser Barristan's skills. Clegane is probably the only one here who knew that Selmy wasn't bluffing when he said that he could cut through the five of them easily.

Shows how useless Janos Slynt is. He worse than Roberts kingsguard, and none of them have half the skill a knight of the kingsguard ought to.

@@luc7478 i mean he died in the alley ways which was not very dignified.. but if you rewatch the scene he cuts down 20 sons of the harpy. thats a fucking exit right there.
this was also mentioned in the show. in a conversation between cersei and someone.
"The man who profaned his blade with the blood of the king he sworn to defend"
This sentence alone is better than the entire scrip of season 8.
HeHE VaRis nO cOcK
I will profane my sword if is a Targaryen.... sorry not sorry.
To much incest corrupt their blood
That's because it comes directly from the book, soon as they surpassed the books they were fucked
Hardly.
This line hits because Baristan is friendly with Jamie outside this scene, but here you can see how he knows everyone's bullshit
What I love most about this scene is how nervous all those knights get when Selmy draws his sword. That added line that he could cut through them all wasn't needed, because their apprehension is what told us they were screwed.
Even the Hound was ready to drew his sword. That's how you know not to mess with Selmy
Jeoffrey had a lvl 95 paladin on his account. Then he deleted it...
Lvl 80 paladin. This universe look like lich king version.
Naw, he just transferred his character to another realm - in the service of a certain Queen..
true :D
He was a noob so he thought Paladin was nerfed and became weak. Thus, he gave it to an opponent for free.
@zimThuet 120 now
If the Hound grabs the hilt of his sword, with 5 kings guard standing in front of him along with the city watch, you know Selmy is an avengers level threat.
Boi lol
And also he does not respect the skills of the King Guards
The Hound knew that all of the Kingsguard in this scene were complete jokes compared to Barristan.
Incorrect! He’s obviously going to draw his sword if the king is threatened. Whether he be behind 5, 10, 15 guards in front of him! It’s his job to protect. It’s ok to be wrong though and come up with weird scenarios like the one you came up with. Maybe next time!
@@ThePwnasouras Except it’s not in character for the hound. He was ready to draw his sword because Selmy would absolutely cut through all 5 of those fuckers
"A hall to die in" the way he says that sends chills down my spine

Man the quality of writing and dialogue was so good back then... Oh how the mighty have fallen.
@@ctgst9771 For a second I wanted to counter your point, but then I realized that you are most likely an intellectual with a massive brain, so I better not embarrass myself by even trying.
@@ctgst9771 Sure, this scene in particular isn't that deep. But it helps knowing who these people are, who Barristan Selmy is, and why his forced retirement is such a big deal. Other than that, the articulate dialogue is sooo good. I guess I just miss it since the last 2 seasons have been absolute horse shit.
@@ctgst9771
This scene shows how dangerous selmy is without even fighting
He calls the king boy and no one dares to say something not even the king himself
Yes, it's maybe not a perfect scene with perfect dialogues but its very badass scene
@@ctgst9771 im certain you never actually watched the show
@@muzzy492 This scene alone beats season 6 to 8...
In the books Janos Slynt and some gold cloaks are sent after Selmy, Selmy writes his final chapter in the kingsguard book, then evades capture whilst killing 2 gold cloaks without a weapon, escapes the city and then gets BACK into the city so that he can see Ned being beheaded and pay his respects. All whilst being undetected. Selmy is the best fighter alive in westeros. After his famous rescue (single handedly) of king Aerys at Duskendale and also his killing of Maelys the Monstrous in single combat, a man whose size and ferocity is possibly moreso than the mountain as he had killed his cousin by twisting his head off.
" Here boy! Melt it down and add it to the others"
The only disrespect that I accept.
So they replaced a person who didnt protect his king with a person who killed his king
Lannister in a nutshell
@@MossPalone The funny part is, people in the books AND show neglect to remember that the king in question was going batshit and shouting to burn Everybody.
@@SilentZombie I think they mean he didnt protect king Robert...cant save a man from himself tho
@@zenther5862 I have a feeling the whine he guzzled down like water was tampered with to begin with. Yeah I understand the guy gets so damn drunk he stumbles around but I don't think he was THAT drunk to let a dangerous animal gore him like that.
Normally, I would agree with your point about Jamie being the Kingslayer, but everyone knew that Jamie wouldn't kill this king.
I love how Varys looked at Littlefinger, like he's saying "look at what you've done.".
King.
Also Littlefinger's reaction with his fingers in his mouth. He just realised what the fuck he just said and might just get hell out of there soon.
The sound of the unsheathing of the swords echoing in the hall followed by silence was epic. Awesome scene.
I love how Barristan just throws his sword on the ground and storms off. The second the room went silent from him drawing his sword he'd made his point. I'm sure he briefly considered fighting but he would not dishonor himself that way
*I still love how Barristan finally whips out his sword only after seeing Janos Slynt start to laugh at him*
Yeah, Slynt was the most pathetic of those cunts
