"Attacking him was stupid." Tywin's no bullshit approach to everyone was amazing in this show. Damn that whole scene in the tent with Jamie is top class writing and acting.
i think that twin knew exactly who aria was, but liked the girls balls, he gave her reosability if the mountain (she would report to tywin of the mountains depravaties, if they became an issue, he would take care of iy)
@@hibbidyjibbidyy "i think that twin knew exactly who aria was, but liked the girls balls" Love of girl-balls aside, no way. No way did he know he had Arya Stark in his castle and allow her to hear his plans, and fail to use her as a hostage. When his army movements were "accidentally" sent to the wrong lord, one loyal to the Starks, and he has Arya Stark handling letters and sitting in on strategy meetings, he would probably figure out what happened. He knew she was a northern girl, and suspected she was high born. He did not know exactly who she was.
I love how Tywin actually acknowledged Tyrion's wit and obviously so frustrated when talking to his other kids. He's probably thinking 'Why in seven hells THIS one is the smartest one...'
I like to think Tyrion's wit was a blessing that Tywin rejected - instead of armoring house Lannister with Tyrion's mind Tywin made his son weaponize it and use against house Lannister.
Cersei finally gets a chance to have Tywin listen to her opinion and it’s “let’s get rid of our biggest ally in the war cause joffreys betrothed is manipulating him to not be a horrible human being”
It's hilarious that Maergery manipulating Joffrey to have a better public opinion is something Cersei deems as bad and that her manipulating Joffrey in turn, is also bad. Joffrey would've been absolutely destructive to the the Seven Kingdoms if he was left unchecked. He is bitter, cruel, clueless and childish and if people didn't refuse some of his demands and manipulate him otherwise, it would've been the end. I guess Cersei just couldn't look with a more objective point of view at her son and instead was completely maternal in her idea of letting Joffrey be as he is. Which is a terrible thing because... It's Joffrey. But I can understand.
I think people forget Cercei hated Margaery not only because she was manipulating and way more loved than her, but because of the prophecy "then comes another... younger, more beautiful, to cast you down and take all you hold dear". She thought it was Margaery so of course she wanted to get rid of her, Joffrey being manipulated was just the tip of the iceberg in Cercei's mind. Seeing her with Tommen is what really drove her insane so in the end it was a self fulfilling prophecy
@@TheEtherny I totally forgot about that. That witch's prophecy was completely gone after the scene was done. It was kinda ironic that the "younger, more beautiful" queen was Daenerys, but Cersei put herself in a world of humiliation and trouble, because she was chasing Maergery all this time.
Right. And in the process she turned the Tyrells, probably the most powerful house in Westeros, against her, probably caused the commonfolk of King's Landing to hate her even more than they already did, caused her last remaining son to kill himself, and now sits on the Iron Throne literally without one single ally. Tywin is rolling in his grave at her stupidity and complete lack of foresight.
"Brilliantly solved" my ass. She was EXTREMELY lucky that there was a shit ton of explosive crap exactly where all her enemies in KL were going to be, and that's it. That's not strategy. If that hadn't been the case she would've been fucked without a doubt.
+italkcrab "wanting to ensnare the whole Kingdom using his blind followers and whip me through the streets and lock me up in a dungeon for having premarital sex instead of minding his own goddamn business” Except as the queen in a society that runs on blood based inheritance of authority and power who she has sex with is EVERYONE’S business. For that matter who the King has sex with is everyone’s business. How many people had to die so Cersei could sleep with Jamie and bear his children? One hundred thousand? Two hundred thousand? Half a million? A million? And thats not including people that lost loved ones, property, or their innocence. Is this system a good one? Not really. But it’s the system that they live in and they have to live by it’s rules. And with these rules come privileges and responsibility. I don’t think you’re going to get much sympathy from me for Cersei, who probably lives in more luxury than 99.999% of the planet at that time, when all she had to do was keep her skirt down, or at the very least take steps to ensure she wouldn’t get pregnant.
@@florianhirsch471 should have been 12 or 13 that's what grrm wanted. The last two seasons were about 5 crammed into two. The battle with the night king should have been one season alone instead of an episode. They lose after two episodes at winterfell regroup in the riverlands and lose again only to turn up at the gates of kings landing where Cersei has to fight with them then all the backstabbing like the first two seasons for the last season for the throne.
You could not ask for finer actors to play these roles. These scenes are absolutely brilliant. I could watch the Lannisters just talk to each other all day.
Wolfen443 Well, they're highborn nobility who spend their days making speeches, debating with small councils, whereas people like the Starks are more gruff and honest (though that is not always a good thing)
Except what Tyrion wanted wasn't applause. He wanted *recognition and a genuine place at his father's side.* Tyrion is the main reason the capital didn't fall to Stannis. He ensured it held out under siege, crippled the enemy forces with the Wyldfire attack, and then led a sally that held the enemy army at bay, preventing them from entering the city and killing Joffrey ahead of Tywin's relief force. All while keeping the worst excesses of his psychotic nephew in check. Tyrion did exactly what Tywin sent him to do. It is Tywin who fails to recognise this because he's too blinded by his hatred of his own son.
@@napoleoncomplex2712 He did all he could yet he disobeyed one thing..."family's legacy". Tyrion should've not brought his whore into kings landing considering it will be noticed by tywin later on, and it's also Tyrion's reputation of whoring and drinking is what clearly destroys tywin's main goal. If Tyrion tried to have a legit wedding with anyone before this, tywin would've considered it. Sometimes reputation is still a deciding factor no matter what you did. Hence, even tywin denied not because Tyrion's not capable of ruling casterly rock, it's because he would've turned it into a whore house therefore diminishing the Lannisters reputation from an outside view.
@@napoleoncomplex2712 well kidnapping his sweet pump nephew and threatening to have him raped and killed to save a whores virtue wasn't in Lord Tywin's playbook for the Imp. He did a lot of other idiotic things also but the having tommen held hostage by sellswords was the biggest
He did many times.. Joffrey wanted practically everyone dead, Tywin put him in his place when he told him a King does not have call himself king.. When he wanted Varys dead, Tywin told him to go & rest.. My favourite Joffrey scene was when Tyrion slapped him & he said he was going to tell mummy!
"Say something clever" ".....did you know you can't lick your own elbow?" "my son. A damn fool. Out. GET OUT!" *jamie leaves* *Tywin rolls his sleeve up and tries to lick his elbow*
Reese Paplham you mean if Joanna Lannister was still alive! If Tyrion's mom survived pregnancy, Tywin and Cersei would have been a little bit nicer to Tyrion
Blue Mermaid I don't know why but I think tyrion would be joanna favorite and tywin would still dislike the fact that he is a dwarf but I doubt that she would let hím do half of what he did to him
@@dlugi4198 I don't think he hated his father. When he is talking with Arya in harrenhall he says that his father was a weak man but he was a good man as well and that he loved his children, so I don't think he hated Tytus Lannister
It's interesting how Tywin seems frustrated because all the traits he wants in his kids are instead spread out nearly equally among the three of them: Jaime - Skilled in combat and strategy, and is charismatic. Cersei - Utterly ruthless and puts family first (or her kids at least, in her own way) Tyrion - Brillant and inventive, clever when it comes to politics and scheming All of these traits are embodied in Tywin himself but he can't seem to get them all into just one of his kids, mostly because he himself failed in the parenting arena, something he can't seem to comprehend.
Tywin's strong traits are outshined by his bad ones. Jaime is a skilled, charismatic fighter and Tywin practically chased him off by never respecting his wishes to be a man of his own making. Cersei puts family first, but Tywin disregards that mainly because he believes she is not that smart (which I suppose holds merit). Tyrion is a brilliant strategist and politician, but Tywin can't unsee the monster that killed his beloved wife. All in all if Tywin had been more understanding towards his children and showed some leniency (even a little), the Lannisters could have been an unstoppable dynasty for years to come. Ironically, the way Tywin handled his kids results (or may results) in the very downfall of the family name he swore he'd protect after seeing his own father nearly destroy it. I agree with Samuel Godwin , his linear thinking is his own downfall.
Michel van der Linden So true I couldn't have said it better myself if he actually loved his children & was a better father the Lannisters wouldn't have met the end they are headed for
He blames Tyrion for killing his mother as if someone smuggled a knife into the womb, castigates Jaime as the "Kingslayer" without acknowledging the king in question was a lunatic, and put an incestuous psychopath in charge of King's Landing. Tywin didn't want to be loved, only remembered...well, they're going to remember him NOW...
I like how while he's talking to Cersei and Tyrion, he writes letters. They come to him talking about what they want now that Jaime is gone and probably not coming back, while Tywin writes letters. Letters which i would guess is preparing the events that will take place at a certain wedding.
Its a bartering power move. Cersei attempts to do this with Olenna Tyrell but fails as 1. Shes not really writing and 2. Olenna is someone on equal political footing with Cersei so it seems more like an insult than a flex.
@@shitpost.mp4345 I don't think Tywin cared about doing power moves on his degenerate children, he most likely feels they are not worthy of all his focus at any given moment. Tywin was a very busy man, specially during the war.
@@shitpost.mp4345 its not a 'power move'. Cersei attempts to make it so, and just as Tywyn says, she is not as smart as she thinks. Tywyn is head of a great house, hand of the king (effectively the king) and the main commander of a major war.. he has a lot of shit to do.
at 7:23. You can see the look of admiration on Tyrion's face when Tywin calls him his son. Like he finally noticed Tyrion for who he is for the first time.
I wonder if Tyrion got his act together after this point and stopped visiting the brothels, Tywin would have actually taken better care of him after the Battle of the Blackwater. Or if he just used that as an excuse to abuse his son and would have found another excuse after that.
@@DngrDan No, in the next scene he adamantly refuses to see any of the good that Tyrion did. He hated Tyrion, now and always would, because Joana lannister died giving birth to him. When he says "you are my son" it is a lie he says to manipulate Tyrion who is desperate for recognition from stinky Tywin. Its why his corpse stank up the entire cathedral, he was full of shit. (kidding, but Tywin was a massive hypocrite)
@@cynthiaclark875mo, it was both. He loved Jaime. Jaime was his favorite child. Jaime was handsome. He was a knight. He just wasnt a ruler like tywin wanted.
Tywin succeeded in every role he took on, except for being a parent. He was a great Lord of Casterly Rock, a great Warden of the West, a great Hand of the King, a great battle commander, but a horrible father. The tragedy is that the last role was probably his most important, and his failure in that regard will probably bring about the downfall of his House.
he wanted his children to achieve greatness for the Lannisters, and they all did. Jaime became a Kingsguard and the best swordsman in the land (but now with no hand), Cersei rose to Queen and Tyrion (against expectations) became the hero of Blackwater and a rather good Master of Coin. However he sacrificed any pretense of love for any of his children, choosing instead to love himself and his position. For the twins it didn't matter since they were both narcissistic selfish people but for Tyrion he did not get the love and support a child needed, turning him into the bitter man he is.
@@SantomPh I don't think Tywin loved himself. In the books, it is said that when his wife died, something died in Tywin. I think he hates the world, and only carries on because his pride and duty drive him foward. He doesn't live for himself or his children, but for his legacy. There are few moments where Tywin seems happy, and they all involve Arya. Oner of the only people he met with a cunning like his who he does not have a grudge against (to his knowledge)
And as we can see by his speeches, the legacy of his house was clearly what he cared most about. Really ironic therefore that he was a shitty father. Ned Stark, despite being a terrible politician, humble, and unambitious, he managed to father a whole gang of capable kids who ended up the ultimate victors. They all had some hard lessons to learn on the way, but it's easy to see that Ned left a much greater legacy than Tywin ever could.
Not sure if he was a terrible parent. Tough love yes, but he did everything for his kids. Maybe a little tough in Tyrion, but he was a dwarf in a rough time. He Tyrion had to be strong and raised tough to survive
but even that role and the outcome is mainly based on his (literaly) most fatal flaw he highlights appropriately when he's putting the life verdict on tyrion using his viewpoint on prositition as ultimate "disgust death blow finish move" tyrion eventually reflected back to him via hypocrit-reversal crossbow. a man and all that he stood for - completely and finally undone.
Funny thing is, in the show he’s way better than the books. In the books he gives the impression of a crapseller only adored by his children. In the show he’s a real force to be recon with
@@felipemontero1087 Casting Charles Dance in ANY role: remeber Last Action Hero? First time I was introduced to Charles as an actor, will never forget it.
Of all the talks, I looooove the talking-to that he gave Cersei. He pretty much said to her what I've been thinking: that she over-indulges her son, she doesn't know how to control him, and that she's not good at ruling. Then, Cersei has the nerve to bitch about the Margaery Tyrell, whose family saved her city and fed her people, and can actually have some semblance of control over Joffrey.
I think Tyrion summed her up pretty well in the latest book like this: "Cersei is as gentle as King Maegor, as selfless as Aegon the Unworthy, as wise as Mad Aerys. She never forgets a slight, real or imagined. She takes caution for cowardice and dissent for defiance. And she is greedy. Greedy for power, for honour, for love."
"Alright. Contribute." Love that line. Just the bored tone in his voice. Whatever Cersei, if you must. I suppose I can suffer to listen to you for a few minutes.
+Ben Kulbago I prefer to think of it as calling her bluff. Or calling her on her own shit. As in, "You claim such and such? Very well, prove it." He says a similar thing to Jaime in A Storm of Swords / season 4 of the show, when Jaime refuses his position as heir to Casterly Rock for the umpteenth time. Here's an excerpt from one of Jaime's later chapters in ASOS: " 'I am a knight of the Kingsguard. The Lord Commander of the Kingsguard! And that’s all I mean to be!' Firelight gleamed golden in the stiff whiskers that framed Lord Tywin’s face. A vein pulsed in his neck, but he did not speak. And did not speak. And did not speak. The strained silence went on until it was more than Jaime could endure. 'Father...' he began. 'You are not my son.' Lord Tywin turned his face away. 'You say you are the Lord Commander of the Kingsguard, and only that. Very well, ser. Go do your duty.' " At the same time, this reinforces his line when he disowns Jaime.
I love Tywin turning like "who tf dropped that glass" then tyrion said his first few words and he turned back like "nvm my boy about to spit some bars"
"Your mother's dead, soon I'll be dead, and you, and your brother, and your sister and her children. All of us dead and rotting in the ground." Well. Clearly SOMEBODY has read the books.
2:38 Your mother's dead: check before long I'll be dead: check and you: check and your brother: ... and your sister: check and all of her children: check, check, check
To teach me humility, I’ve been condemn to watch clips on RUclips of Tyrion waddling about, wearing that proud lion that was his father’s sigil and his fathers before him; but no man will ever compelled me to watch this entire series over again.
I love the scene with Tywin and Jamie because it shows the pure hypocrisy and hubris of Tywin. He says “The lion doesn’t concern himself with the opinions of the sheep,” but all he truly cares about is how his family name is perceived and viewed. Such a great and nuanced character
I think he meant Jaimie’s concerns were shallow compared to his. Jaimie’s position, name, and skill should be more than enough in his eyes. On the other hand, an entire military’s reputation matters much more to him.
He's talking about the *_legacy_* of his house and the indomitable mark that they'll all leave behind once they're all dead and gone 2:08- 3:07. He wants to preserve the legacy of his house for the many generations to come. And he knows that his house won't stand the test of time if they're not feared by their enemies. Because optics plays an important part in warfare and he knows that if they're not seen as a formidable house to contend with, then their enemies will think that they are a weak house. So, Tywin knows like all good rulers that politics plays a huge part in winning, and he wants to be feared not out of sheer vanity but out of power.
His father Tytos was known for being "the toothless lion" who let people walk all over him. Young Tywin witnessed his father disgracing and humiliating himself by lending money that was never returned, doing nothing against rebel lords (namely the Reynes of Castamere and the Tarbecks), marrying his daughter Genna to Emmon Frey just to please Lord Walder while this marriage was uneven, letting his mistress steal his late wife's jewel, and so on. House Lannister was no longer feared and was even the Westerlands' laughing stock. It's a safe bet that Tywin didn't want his house to be mocked again.
Cause he was useful in that moment. But Tywin would never actually give Tyrion control over his house. That could hurt his precious legacy. It's hilarious, cause Tyrion was the one who would've brought their house to greatness with Tywin's support.
@@RainAngel111 it’s not ironic. Tyrion was NOT fit to rule over Casterly Rock JUST BECAUSE he was a bit clever. Tywin was right. Just look at what happened with Shae. The audacity of him to demand the seat of Casterly Rock from Tywin simply because it’s his “by right” is astronomically entitled and that’s what set Tywin off.
@@Yvanehtnioj2000 that's the thing though, tywin's just a narcissist and being arrogant. because when Tyrion escapes his execution he finds Shae in Tywin's bed, expecting him. He wouldn’t have asked his father for any praise for doing his job then followed that up with demands for the lordship of Casterly Rock. I loved Tyrion but just because he’s a dwarf whose father is hard on him doesn’t mean I’m going to give him a pass. I can 100% see why Tywin didn’t want him to have the Lordship of Casterly Rock and why he wanted Jaime instead. I see more similarities to Tytos than Tywin in Tyrion. It’s funny because Tywin is very aware of all his children. When he patronizes Cersei people applaud and say he’s 100% right. But when he patronizes Tyrion people say he’s wrong…
Cersei would have left an ideal legacy had Joffrey been a competent ruler. She is what expected from a Westerosi woman from a Great House - beautiful, wealthy and by marrying the King she became the most powerful woman in Westeros. Overtime she assimilated Tywin’s influence, but was not sharp or calculated enough to maintain it. Overall Cersei was a powerful force, but she was very flawed and arrogant and extremely self-serving and destructive.
Jamie's probably been covered in human blood, and brains, and every kind of grossness we can conceive of, I don't think a little residual deer's blood is going to bother him very much.
one of them is always off somewhere else. The only time they were ever around each other was during Tyrion's trial, and Tywin was not talking to them at the time.
I love the Tywin skins his own deer. He of course has people to do that for him, but he WANTS to do it himself. Its a hobby, something he enjoys doing. He was one of the best characters to ever appear on the show.
I suspect he dresses the deer as stress relief and something he can focus on. Otherwise he would be left to brood over his twin children and the rumors about them, and his son who is a disappointment to him in so many ways.
You can’t not love Tywin as a character and Charles Dance was fantastic in the role. He certainly had the measure of all of his children and was disappointed in each one in different ways
The scene with Jaime in retrospect is...heartbreaking. Tywin really loved Jaime, but he was such a shitty, abusive and hateful father, the one person Tywin loved had no real love for him. On a side note, just, damn, I liked Tywin a hell of a lot more than he deserved. But it was so difficult not to respect him when he was as skilled, clever and intimidating as he was.
add to the irony that the child he loves the most is the least useful one. The other two he despises are the one's who are more influential. And they're both smarter than Jamie
Its Charles' charisma. The man brings the character to life. Its why we like Tyrion so much, and hate Ramsey and Joffrey so much. These actors played their characters like Slash plays a guitar.
It’s very easy to like Tywin. Not a damn thing in this 15 minutes they showed, was wrong that he said. Harsh, but blunt tactful and honest about his beliefs. He was right with Jamie, pointing out his insecurities while also saying he would’ve done x y z. (Which, although again is blunt now with other houses, it still comes with a significant understanding of why, given the situation) He was right with cersei, really not much else to say. Calls her a shit mom for not mentoring him into the right direction and commanding respect from her son. Both are accurate And even with Tyrion, even if Tyrion wanted recognition or reward for his actions, Tywin doesn’t agree with that and he gave genuine reasons as to why. Even though Tyrion developed, Tywin doesn’t see it yet; and tyrions rep of being a drunk with Whores genuinely already preceded him. Only real argument to dislike Tywin is that he was obviously more of an ass to Tyrion because his birth killed his mom and he’s a dwarf. Outside of that, it’s kinda hard to disagree with a vast majority of his actions and words. Forgot how great he was, just watched a few scene packs. Never rewatched GOT since 6/7/8 were kinda let downs, forgot how great the show was originally
doesnt matter if he didnt mean to. it doesnt even matter that he should be blameless because he was a baby. at the end of the day, him being born is why his mother is dead.
Ronald Bryan Domingo Because complications at birth is the child's fault. Yup, you should condemn your child for that. On a serious note, I think Tywin hates Tyrion because he is a dwarf, like he told Jon, "All dwarves are like bastards in their father's eyes".
4SidedStar Tywin hates Tyrion because he killed his wife (im assuming youve read the books), the fact that he is a dwarf is just the cherry on top. Joanna was the only thing that made Tywin smile and Tyrion kinda ruined it. imagine a cab, brakes fail (not drivers fault) driver lives, female passenger dies. is it perfectly acceptable for the husband of the female passenger to hate the guts of the cab driver even though he know the driver was not at fault? Yes....
And the fact Tywin was a giant hypocrite the whole time is crazy. When he visits Oberyn in the brothel and he tells the sex workers/"whores" to leave, Tywin stares at one of the girls as she leaves. You'd think the guy known as "the dude who hates whores" wouldn't even bother to look in their direction 🤔
@@jk_d7837 Tywin is a hypocrite, but he does have consistency. Even in the books it's very clear he is just as much of a connoisseur of prostitutes, but unlike Tyrion who is public about it, Tywin makes sure to keep his vices well hidden. It's not so much that Tywin was mad that Tyrion was f- around, it was that it was known that Tyrion was f- around.
Tywin may have been been a poor father. But he was a great leader. A strong man. Someone that everyone who met him wanted him to approve of them. The child that he treated the worst could have been his greatest success. His one blind spot was fore thinking towards his children. He was so clever and could plan for everything except their feelings.
But at least he was the second most powerful person in the country, rather than a glorified bodyguard. Tywin went to his death holding the title of the most powerful man in the history of Westeros who was never officially a king. That's quite an accomplishment.
@@TheStapleGunKidalso, he wasn't that smart. He hated the real brain of the family, Tyrion, and wanted him dead although Tyrion was more valuable to the family alive than dead. Jamie was honourable but impulsive and stupid and didn't care about the family name or Lannister legacy. And Cersei, she was just a power hungry twat. Also, Tywin allowed for his precious son to get captured and with Jamie as prisoner Robb would have won the war if Cat hadn't released him.
Barring his talks to Joffrey, and perhaps the time he made Tyrion hand of the king. This comment is probably the best point he ever made: "I don't distrust you because you're a woman, I distrust you because you're not as smart as you think you are".
Wow. I was letting the video play on its own while reading the comments below. I stumbled across yours during the scene between Cersai and Tywin and I kid you not...as I was reading, I reached the part of the video where Tywin happened to be saying exactly what you quoted, while having just started reading said quotation. Lel
And as we saw in his dealings with Lady Olenna Tyrell, Tywin does respect intelligent and clever women. Makes me think Lady Joanna must've been such a woman.
Meanwhile a golden rose is growing by the pen, and no one notices a viper among the grass (in the TV show the viper is pretty much dead though). Keep the shade throwing going.
1:37 - I love the absolute disdain his voice when he says this. He really does not care what people think about him as long as they fear and respect him.
That second scene between Tywin and Tyrion was amazing, Tywin never shows much in the way of emotion, but in his own reserved way you can feel his HATRED for Tyrion bursting through, who sits there and takes it, and you can sense Tyrions sadness and frustration coming through that despite all his abilities and talents, people still see him as a dwarf first and foremost, that moment at 12:14 where he instantly 'fuck you's Tywins threat really highlighted how nasty the emotional content of the scene truly was.
Tyrion should’ve stuck to Oberyns Martel’s plan. I’m referring to The Red Viper telling Tyrion that he & his Lady wife (Sansa) should come back with him to Dorne after Tyrions trial by combat. Oberyn said that his brother Doran The Prince of Dorne would like to talk to “heir of Casterly Rock” (Tyrion) about the “laws of succession”
Tywin want heir who charismatic, smart, and care about family above anything else. Jaime = charismatic, Tyrion = smart, Cersei = care about family above anything else. its too bad he cant see it, he is too salty because his wife's death
The only one who have all of these qualities is Arya Stark, I suppose that is why he liked her. Btw Cersei don't value family, she only values her children...not even her father or her husband
Very rarely do i find myself impressed with the villain of the story. Tywin Lannister is the best example of what good writing and amazing acting can do. This man commanded every room he was in. I bet the actors and actresses were Star struck with every scene they got to film with Charles dance.
Charles Dance played this character masterfully. You could tell his entire existence revolved around grieving for his wife and thinking about how to make the Lannister family name endure.
"A lion doesn't concern himself with the opinions of sheep" Tywin Lannister Nice Quote, and it's interesting that Tywin is greatly disappointed in his children, but all for different reasons. Also, great acting between Nicolas Waldeau (I think that's how its spelt) and Charles Dance.
It’s a good quote, but as Jamie pointed out, it’s completely hypocritical. He claims he doesn’t care about everyone else’s opinion, and yet he has spent his entire life, trying to make sure that everybody for all of history will. have a certain opinion of his family.
Tywin slapped down that little shit on a few occasions. I'm sure he would have ended up controlling Joffrey eventually, since it was only Tywin's money and army that was keeping Joffrey on the Iron Throne.
@@maragathm We saw it a couple times. In the throne room when he walks up the stairs to him and says he'll be informed "whenever necessary" as well as when he sends him to bed. Joffrey knew not to mess with Tywin so he didn't have to do it too often.
Tywin was always one of my favorite GOT characters. Totally badass. His downfall was his treatment of Tyrion. It as his greatest flaw and one that cost him his life. Of all his children Tyrion was the best son, but he refused to see that.
Tyrion was also the most alike him. Cunning, ruthless, and even a whoremonger… Tywin hated Tyrion especially for “killing” his wife, but also for embodying his vices.
Well, he had twisted reasons to hate Tyrion, it's contextualized willing or not. And if the fan theories are correct, Tyrion could be a bastard, the son of the mad king, etc.. if that's the case, hell, can you really blame Tywin from being so resentful? Tywin had to be a zen master, some kind of a saint to just absorb this kind of drama and move on, lol sometimes people expect these fictional characters to act like caricatures, that's why I enjoy dark fantasy, because it exposes the cynical side of things, humanity are not purely "evil" or "good", these concepts comes from fairy tales (including religion and whatnot)
Tywin is one of my favorite characters for two reasons. 1) Charles Dance did a phenomenal job; he is such a talented actor. 2) Tywin did what had to be done to protect his family & preserve the Lannister name. He was cruel, sometimes without purpose. He had his faults, but I wish he’d made it to the end.
I think the very same. But as close as he was to his own death, he became so low, so opposite to what he have been almost the entire series. He was a very good character, but decreased tremendously at the end
"Jugglers and singers require applause..." That's rather rich coming from the guy who rode into the King's court after the Battle of the Blackwater on a white horse.
I know this was from 2 years ago but that was a political statement. effectively saying "I can ride a horse into the kings court and shit on his floor. what can you do?"
what he meant is that Respect was given not ask. He doesnt concern what other people think even his horse shit on the halls of Kings Landing and doesnt bat an eye.
And brilliant acting with the Lannisters, they're the most interesting characters in the show (and in the books) in my opinion - so complex and all of them are pretty smart (yes, Cersei too). I think it's Tywin's fault, neglecting them at Casterly Rock during their childhood and all, that resulted in Jaime and Cersei's unhealthy relationship ... they possibly lacked the love they were supposed to get from their parents (mommy is dead) so they tried to get it from each other. And of course, Tywin's hate with Tyrion is stupid.
Tywin and Tyrion are both awesome characters and the scenes between them are fucking ace! :D Tywin always acts wisely and for the best of Lannisters but I think that one of his (rare) mistakes is to let his bitter feelings blind him to see the true potential of Tyrion. From the three of Tywins children Tyrion is the one with true mind and skill for ruling.
You know, as much of an asshole that he was, I miss Tywin Lannister. He was an amazing character, both in the books and the show. And Charles Dance captured the spirit of Tywin perfectly.
That Tywin / Jamie talk, is a talk every son needs to hear from their Father at least once in their life. Acknowledgement, Humility, Reality, Love, Fear, and Aspiration.
10:30 - 12:00 beautiful scene, where Tywin gives, probably for the first time, full vent of his loathing for Tyrion. And a key scene where Tyrion finally understands how exposed and helpless he is, as long as Tywin rules.
it's amazing how consistent George RR Martin's writing is when it comes to the characters and their goals and personalities Tywin hates Tyrion but when Jaime is captured he calls Tyrion his son because the Lannister's power, position and legacy is more important than his hatred for Tyrion not only he tries to use Tyrion's intelligence since he knows Joffrey and Cersei are stupid but he calls him his son and treats him with respect knowing that this will give Tyrion the motivation to do his best as Hand of the King.
One thing the show improves on is it gives life to the characters and it shows us what's happening behind the curtains with characters that the book does not show.
Charles Dance put on the greatest performance of the entire show in every scene he was in for sure. Such a powerful character- it was so difficult to watch seeing him go from a redeeming and likeable character with the scene of him pouring tyrions drink and making him hand of the king to him becoming probably the most evil character in the show with everythinf he said to tyrion in the scene where he was denying him casterly rock
Tywin was a dick but man was he a great character. Calm and collected and only gets his nerves riled when the family's pride is at stake. He's an old lion that looks down on the squabbles of cubs (his children). Of course, credit needs to be given to Charles Dance's excellent performance.
Tywin is a walking contradiction. Man who treats his family pragmatically as pawns based on how he can use them to help the family name... yet he choses to alienate the only person who matters in the long run and who's political skills and wits could match his own - all that because of an irrational and selfish hate. You had all the opportunities in the world to harmlessly slip from your inhuman discipline and you picked the wrong one. Well done.
stalk8r This. If Tywin had actually observed Tyrion and seen how incredibly smart he was instead of shunting him to the side--Tyrion would have been his greatest legacy. But because Jaime and Cersei were prettier--he went with them.
Tywin's sister once told him Tyrion is his mini version. Tywin did not speak to her for a long time because of that. Had he been not blinded by his hate of Tyrion...
Tywin has something to admire and something to dislike about each one of his children. Cersei bore grandchildren to continue the family line, however, she has very little political sense and charismatic tact. Jaime is an amazing warrior, but makes brash decisions (something which annoys Tywin greatly). Tyrion is a great politician, but is a lustful dwarf. Tywin also blames him for his wife's death.
Before I ever watched an episode of this series, I watched Just about every character compilation video on RUclips. Finally took the plunge and got caught up to the then current season 4. It was glorious!! 🙂
+MrCAlbert18 Yes, but he was born into his power in a very strict class-based society. None of those people are free; they were born knee-benders. In our society, a man like Tywin would be ignored. I've learned that first-hand. You cannot acquire "power" over others by being a hard-ass that bullies people around, in our world (unless you've already acquired some power and exercise it like a drill sergeant would). You've got to be more like Renly, I find, charming them and being "positive" and all that shit.
Something about cutting an animal, while having a dynasty decision and Lannister does not miss a beat, that itself is a power play and shows greatness from Tywin
fogito21 with him dead, the lannisters have been severely weakened. Cersi has no idea how to rule(and tbh that is tywins fault) tyrion is now a traitor, and Jamie cant do it alone.
One of the few scenes where one sees Tywin working like a base-level worker. He's cleaning & butchering his kill for food, a basic survival skill, even though he's a wealthy lord.
Tywin: Lannisters...don't act like fools. Jaime: Hm. Tywin: You wanna say something clever? Go on, say something clever. Jaime: I was gonna say they do act like dicks, but you've already done that for me.
I think Loras Tyrell put it best: "He was a force." I know that's a show-only quote, but I think it describes Tywin perfectly. Just commanded every room he walked into
I like how Martin writes such characters. People are allowed to be hypocrites or conflicts. Tywin in this scene is preaching about not caring about what others think, yet the family name and legacy is all he cares about.
@@hibbidyjibbidyy how would he know?
@@hibbidyjibbidyy "i think that twin knew exactly who aria was, but liked the girls balls"
Love of girl-balls aside, no way.
And Charles Dance was legitimately butchering a deer in that scene: that wasn't a prop, that was the real thing.
@@DarkParagonReally? It’s just something about him savagely butchering the animal that makes him so more authentic.
He was bitter. Tyrion was most likely his only actual son and he was considered defective.
@@shanchan8247 Considering how his other children love incest so much, I bet they truly are Targaryen.
Problem is, Tyrion is just as smart as he is stupid.
@@zonedutopiaFortunately when Tyrion went to Essos his intelligence turned to stupidity.
She s the ultimate idiot, making her a big villain was stupid,
@darkySp well cersei does fuck her brother. I don't think she's the most mentally stable person who makes rational decisions lol
Charles Dance should have won an Emmy for his performance in this show.
Agreed superb performance
He is always that good.
Yes, he should've. He was absolutely BRILLIANT.
I think most of the cast deserves an Emmy, the acting in this show is really good.
For the scene with when he's gutting the stag surely.
I love when he tells Cersei " you are not as smart as you think you are." That sums up her character perfectly.
Faith militant is proof of such 😂
Only those actions caused her son to kill himself so while she gained power, she also gained nothing.

“Jugglers and singers require applause.” Such an epic line, Charles dance really was the perfect Tywin
It's interesting how Tywin seems frustrated because all the traits he wants in his kids are instead spread out nearly equally among the three of them:
Jaime - Skilled in combat and strategy, and is charismatic.
Cersei - Utterly ruthless and puts family first (or her kids at least, in her own way)
Tyrion - Brillant and inventive, clever when it comes to politics and scheming
All of these traits are embodied in Tywin himself but he can't seem to get them all into just one of his kids, mostly because he himself failed in the parenting arena, something he can't seem to comprehend.
True
He's starting to show some signs of being senile. He's too linear in his thinking.
And thus a perfect analysis of Tywin Lannister was written.
Michel van der Linden So true I couldn't have said it better myself if he actually loved his children & was a better father the Lannisters wouldn't have met the end they are headed for
He gives Tyrion a cabinet position, Jaime an army, and Cersei a husband. What a loving father!
Sometimes wars are won with ravens.

It's really interesting. The adoption and imitation of power play.

Of all the talks, I looooove the talking-to that he gave Cersei.

He says a similar thing to Jaime in A Storm of Swords / season 4 of the show, when Jaime refuses his position as heir to Casterly Rock for the umpteenth time. Here's an excerpt from one of Jaime's later chapters in ASOS:
" 'I am a knight of the Kingsguard. The Lord Commander of the Kingsguard! And that’s all I mean to be!'
Firelight gleamed golden in the stiff whiskers that framed Lord Tywin’s face.
Go do your duty.' "

@@z-man1237thats mainly cause of Cersei’s stupidity had she just bore Robert a true born son none of this wouldve happened

Yet ironically refuses to give him casterly rock
Cause he was useful in that moment. But Tywin would never actually give Tyrion control over his house. That could hurt his precious legacy.
It's hilarious, cause Tyrion was the one who would've brought their house to greatness with Tywin's support.
@@RainAngel111 it’s not ironic. Tyrion was NOT fit to rule over Casterly Rock JUST BECAUSE he was a bit clever. Tywin was right. Just look at what happened with Shae. For as smart as Tyrion claims to be he could not realize she was a gold digging opportunist manipulating and taking advantage of him.
Tyrion is the spitting image of his father, just a bit more accepting of being viewed negatively; but can you blame him? He's looked upon negatively from birth by the peasants as well as most of his own family because of his disability.
@@god2930 how is Tyrion the spitting image of Tywin? He doesn’t have HALF his fathers wit or intelligence. He only seems so smart because everyone around him except for Tywin is so dumb. If he was as smart as he thought he was he would’ve saw Shae for what she was.
Aww cersei is so cute. Thinking she leaves a positive legacy and that shes the son tywin never had
She has no positive legacy to leave, I do, however think she is the son Tywin never had.
She was the most like Tywin. All about family, ambitious , and ruthless. She just had a female and mothers emotion.
The fact that he’s butchering a dead stag- the symbol of the Baratheons- is not lost on me.
Symbolism of hunting his rivals as he also eats his catch.. as a lion hunts his prey
3:58 - see Jaime, I just had deer guts in this hand. Let me touch your face with it, lol.
it was actually a real deer.. the actor said it took 3 days to wash the smell away x)
Vilkku watching tywin skin the deer is so satisfying xD
lmao ikr , he should've touch his shoulder
Eh, he wiped his hands. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Jamie's probably been covered in human blood, and brains, and every kind of grossness we can conceive of, I don't think a little residual deer's blood is going to bother him very much.
ever notice that you never see tywin talk to all 3 at once?
***** well it's just that you see every other combination, tywin and tyrion, tywin and cersei, cersei and tyrion, etc.
Twd is the same (not comparing shows) there are characters on that that have had little interaction with each other for long periods of time
They barely listen to me when I talk to them in private...
one of them is always off somewhere else. The only time they were ever around each other was during Tyrion's trial, and Tywin was not talking to them at the time.
Because most of the show is two people talking, not more
"Jugglers and singers require applause... You're a Lannister."
Tywin always shot down Tyrion with gems
Tyrion: Oh, NOW I’m a Lannister? Make up your mind!
I love the Tywin skins his own deer. He of course has people to do that for him, but he WANTS to do it himself. Its a hobby, something he enjoys doing. He was one of the best characters to ever appear on the show.
He skinned and disemboweled a stag, the symbol of House Baratheon.
He’s very much hands on.
I suspect he dresses the deer as stress relief and something he can focus on.
Otherwise he would be left to brood over his twin children and the rumors about them, and his son who is a disappointment to him in so many ways.
I don't like Tywin much. But I do respect him. I respect the shit out of him.

I think jaime loved him. I think they all loved him to some extent. Maybe not tyrion as much but he did want to love him
I would say they do love their father, albeit its the love for a stern parent.
It’s very easy to like Tywin. Not a damn thing in this 15 minutes they showed, was wrong that he said. Harsh, but blunt tactful and honest about his beliefs. He was right with Jamie, pointing out his insecurities while also saying he would’ve done x y z. (Which, although again is blunt now with other houses, it still comes with a significant understanding of why, given the situation)
He was right with cersei, really not much else to say. Calls her a shit mom for not mentoring him into the right direction and commanding respect from her son. Both are accurate
And even with Tyrion, even if Tyrion wanted recognition or reward for his actions, Tywin doesn’t agree with that and he gave genuine reasons as to why.
Never rewatched GOT since 6/7/8 were kinda let downs, forgot how great the show was originally
it kind of disturbs me that he hates tyrion so much
tyrion killed his wife.
wow i don't think tyrion meant to kill his mother
doesnt matter if he didnt mean to. it doesnt even matter that he should be blameless because he was a baby. at the end of the day, him being born is why his mother is dead.
Yes....
Tywin's look to Tyrion at 8:17 is hilarious. Just a momentary "alright, point taken" because it was true, it wasn't Tywin's bed at the time.
@@jk_d7837 He likes to think he's above the "desires of lesser men" but he is still just a man, who's nobility cannot overcome his lechery
@@jk_d7837 Tywin is a hypocrite, but he does have consistency.
He wasn't a poor father. His children were stupid and never shared his vision.
the portrayal of Tywin in this epic series is by far my favorite of all the characters. It transcends even a writer's perfection.
“A glorified bodyguard. For a mad king“ mate, you were literally the same kings hand for 20 years.
But at least he was the second most powerful person in the country, rather than a glorified bodyguard. Tywin went to his death holding the title of the most powerful man in the history of Westeros who was never officially a king. That's quite an accomplishment.
@@TheStapleGunKidand died on the 🚽 with his knickers around his ankles.

Wow. I was letting the video play on its own while reading the comments below. I stumbled across yours during the scene between Cersai and Tywin and I kid you not...as I was reading, I reached the part of the video where Tywin happened to be saying exactly what you quoted, while having just started reading said quotation. And as we saw in his dealings with Lady Olenna Tyrell, Tywin does respect intelligent and clever women. Makes me think Lady Joanna must've been such a woman.

Jsvlad js what about a dragon?
That moment is one of my favourite fleeting seconds of game of thrones.
Tywin want heir who charismatic, smart, and care about family above anything else. Jaime = charismatic, Tyrion = smart, Cersei = care about family above anything else. its too bad he cant see it, he is too salty because his wife's death
+JoeRingo118 I think Lannister family would be better without Cersei. Than tell men are behind all bad.
He doesnt care about his family per se, he cares about his legacy.
The only one who have all of these qualities is Arya Stark, I suppose that is why he liked her. Btw Cersei don't value family, she only values her children...not even her father or her husband
"Say something clever"
"We're not on a Marvel movie, father, I will try with a normal one-liner, like a normal person".
They could do an entire spin off series with just Tywin talking people down into the boots. Best villain ever.
Tywin and Tyrion discussing Casterly Rock is seriously some of the finest acting ever filmed.
Very rarely do i find myself impressed with the villain of the story. Tywin Lannister is the best example of what good writing and amazing acting can do. This man commanded every room he was in. I bet the actors and actresses were Star struck with every scene they got to film with Charles dance.
I will. That actor is perfect for Tywin.
Everyone it take a moment to appreciate Charles Dance, his deliverance of Tywin is absolutely flawless.
Charles Dance played this character masterfully. You could tell his entire existence revolved around grieving for his wife and thinking about how to make the Lannister family name endure.
"A lion doesn't concern himself with the opinions of sheep"
Tywin Lannister
Nice Quote, and it's interesting that Tywin is greatly disappointed in his children, but all for different reasons. Also, great acting between Nicolas Waldeau (I think that's how its spelt) and Charles Dance.
agree 100%
Nikolaj Coster-Waldau.. But I got who you were talking about lol
that's from the Bible
It’s a good quote, but as Jamie pointed out, it’s completely hypocritical. He claims he doesn’t care about everyone else’s opinion, and yet he has spent his entire life, trying to make sure that everybody for all of history will. have a certain opinion of his family.
"I will."
That was pretty badass
Too bad we didn't see much of it.
Tywin slapped down that little shit on a few occasions. I'm sure he would have ended up controlling Joffrey eventually, since it was only Tywin's money and army that was keeping Joffrey on the Iron Throne.
@@kashattack Agreed. Tywin was playing the long game, and Joffrey was well out of his depth... and mostly not even playing it.
Seriously. How amazing is Charles Dance?
Yes.
Fuckin' love Charles Dance. I wish he'd do more voice acting too. He had a bit in Witcher 3. He's got a strong, unmistakable voice.
I wonder how Tywin wouldve reacted to BOTH of his sons being at Winterfell for THE LONG NIGHT......He wouldve made Cersei marry the Night King.
The series begins to go downhill after he gets shot on the toilet.
"Jugglers and singers require applause..." That's rather rich coming from the guy who rode into the King's court after the Battle of the Blackwater on a white horse.
Mark Fernando Exactly. He's full of shit. Always has been. He just hates Tyrion.
...so he could shit on it.
That horse took a shit foreshadowing Tywin's death.

Well I am going to sit you down three or four hours a day. You may hate me for it, but you WILL finish your essay.
I couldn't imagine any other cast as the Lannisters. They all were PERFECT to their roles. I miss first seasons so fucking much.
They're my favorite House. Then I'd say Martell, then Bolton, Greyjoy and then Baratheon. But anyway! House Lannister FTW!!
Tywin: Alright. Contribute...
Cercei: asfdsafdsaADFSGDFSDFSfdsafds!!! *more gibberish*
Tywin: I don't know what I expected. :/
Charles Dance embodied the formidable Tywin Lannister perfectly. He should have won an Emmy award.
Your children should not fear you. That was Tywin’s biggest downfall.
Twyin shouldn’t taken her wife’s death as a mockery of the Gods but as a test of love for the family that he so much preaches to his sons
10:30 - 12:00 beautiful scene, where Tywin gives, probably for the first time, full vent of his loathing for Tyrion. And a key scene where Tyrion finally understands how exposed and helpless he is, as long as Tywin rules.
14:11 is another good one. Cersei wants recognition, instead she gets a chance to gain it. And her face perfectly says "what else was I expecting?"
"you're still here."😂
it's amazing how consistent George RR Martin's writing is when it comes to the characters and their goals and personalities
Tywin hates Tyrion but when Jaime is captured he calls Tyrion his son because the Lannister's power, position and legacy is more important than his hatred for Tyrion
not only he tries to use Tyrion's intelligence since he knows Joffrey and Cersei are stupid but he calls him his son and treats him with respect knowing that this will give Tyrion the motivation to do his best as Hand of the King.
This is when the show was absolutely untouchable with brilliant acting and writing!
Well done.
Well said. If only Tywin wasn't so blind
stalk8r This. If Tywin had actually observed Tyrion and seen how incredibly smart he was instead of shunting him to the side--Tyrion would have been his greatest legacy. But because Jaime and Cersei were prettier--he went with them.
+sailtheplains And because Tyrion "killed" Joanna, the only person to ever make Tywin smile.
I love that Jamie reads him the letter. Tywin forced Jaime to learn to read in his youth
I love how Tywin can just change his tone from low to high to low so casually
Before I ever watched an episode of this series, I watched Just about every character compilation video on RUclips. Finally took the plunge and got caught up to the then current season 4. It was glorious!! 🙂
Ok but the way Tywin says “waddle about” is hilarious
Like Scar from the Lion King😂
That last "I Will" always makes me wonder if Tywin had a secret hand in orchestrating the Purple Wedding.
+The_Howler Joffrey would of made an unstable and pretty shit king once tywin was gone, tommen on the otherhand....
twiliblade Tommen is a weak king because he has no guidance. I'm sure if the Tyrells hadn't killed Joffrey, Tywin would have.
Tywin is the man. He just oozes power, wisdom, ruthlessness.

Makes you wonder why all of Tywin's family are so messed, it might be because of his own ambitious, prideful stuck up sense of self-importance.
If this family had actually worked together like the Starks, they actually stood a horrifying chance
I think Loras Tyrell put it best: "He was a force."
I know that's a show-only quote, but I think it describes Tywin perfectly. Just commanded every room he walked into
Charles Dance owns every scene he is in. What a talent.
I like how Martin writes such characters. People are allowed to be hypocrites or conflicts. Tywin in this scene is preaching about not caring about what others think, yet the family name and legacy is all he cares about.
It’s so heartbreaking watching Tyrions reactions every time he father says “you’re my son!” To him.
