I love how Tywin didn't feel he had to intervene when Tyrion threatened the king. The brat deserved it.
Tywin did intervene to prevent Joffrey from punishing Tyrion. Which was the second time he done this after Tyrion threatened Joffrey "The King" in front of a bunch of people.
So even though Tywin didn't truly love Tyrion he would bail him out alot because he was his son and a Lannister.
I know, everyone was looking for his direction.
He respected tyrion for doing what no one else would.
Tywin didn't intervene to see how Joffrey would handle the situation as King. He wants to see what Joffrey is made of and stays silent when Joffrey immediately turns to him after Tyrion's comments about King's dying. Tywin only breaks his silence after Joffrey fails the test and whines that he is the King
@@stonkshodl9515 @stonkshodl9515 I noticed as well that Joffrey looked at Tywin, an implicit, non-verbal understanding/submission that everybody else thinks that Tywin is ultimately the real dude holding everything together. Joffrey wants it all; he doesn't even want to have to defend his position as King because, as King, "he's so above that", when in reality, that is not how monarchy works at all. I agree that was probably Tywin's main motive, to test Joffrey and see what he would do. He probably also respected Tyrion's comeback in a way but the other reason is more important.
I like how Tyrion literally threatens the life of the king in front of the entire small council and yet the part where the scary, ominous, “oh shit” music plays is when Joffrey insults Tywin.
It shows who's really in charge
@@tushar7891 “do you feel in charge (places open palm on shoulder)”
That's why I thought Tywin had set up Joffrey's death all along, playing 5D Chess to make Tyrion take the fall and manipulate Jaime into quitting the Kingsguard just to spare his brother's life
doubly so since the song is rains of Castamere "so he spoke and so he spoke the lord of Castamere and now the rains weep oar his halls and no ones left the hear"
To be fair, everyone, aside his own mother, were all thinking what Tyrion had said. Joffrey was just stupid enough to piss off the wrong man with real power in Kings Landing.
You cut out the best part....
Tyrion- "You just sent the most powerful man in westeros to bed without supper"
MrSamuel539 You’re a fool if you think he’s the most powerful man in Westeros.

You really think a crown gives you power?
@@MultiCrimsonRain no.... I believe armies give you power.
Joffrey saying everyone is his to torment and Tywin just dropping the paper on the table and slowly rolling his eyes is the perfect representation of how done Tywin is with his whole family
That's why I like tywin. Sure he is a pretty evil man but he is also not a freak. He realises pretty quickly that Joffrey is overtly cruel and shames Cersei for being a bad mother. He is kinda like the lex Luther of thrones.
@@olofacosta3192 I wouldn't necessarily say he is evil. But he's definitely not good either. For the most part his goal is to make the most intelligent decisions that would benefit him and his family. Selfish would be a better word. He was definitely the best King Westeros could possibly have had.
Edit: I forgot he had Oberyn's sister and her children killed. So yeah he's evil I guess. Still not cruel though.
@@rafayg7376 like I said he is like Lex Luther. Quite reasonable and not inherently evil but he has some hardcore crimes and is just an incredibly cruel. Apart from the sacking of kingslanding as you mentioned he also has the famous rains of castamere and the abhorrent treatment of tysha. That and he is a massive hypocrite who as you said is incredibly selfish. I wouldn't hate it if Tywin became king just as I wouldn't hate it if luthor became president. However I believe someone like Ned or even stannis would be far better suited as king
@@olofacosta3192 he has an affair with his sons girlfriend. He's a freak too.

She was really a crofters daughter
You can see the regret and mistake in Joffrey eyes... the acting is superb... Jack Gleeson was a fantastic actor
Agreed. Honestly everyone in this scene is tremendous
Was? Did he die?
@@LeLaidbackLauncher No, however, Jack did quit acting for a long time due to the abuse and vitriol he received from fans for simply being tremendous in his role. 3:01, I honestly just love Tywin's reaction there. Gets me every time. Such an ambiguous expression. Is he amused by Joffrey's remark? Is he annoyed? Threatening him with his eyes?
Why not all three?
He was furious actually. Also at Cersei, because everybody with a brain knew Joffrey turned like that because of her. That's why Tywin immediately secured Tommen for himself, before Cersei would mess him up too.
His initial reaction when he looked at his father after reading the note is impeccable. He instantly figured out it was his father's doing and was like "are you serious?"
@@masterexploder9668 it's heavily implied that Joffrey is the result of the madness that often afflicts children of incest.
That is a perfect summary of Tywin's character. He is very ambiguous and never shows his cards. In the books, Tyrion always tries to read hid expressions but could never do it fully. One scene that I remember is, in a war council The Mountain suggests that they should gauge out eyes of the scout who fail to report and give the eyes to the next one and tell him "now you have four eyes, better use them or the one after you will have six". Tyrion looks at Tywin after that remark and couldn't figure out whether he approved that or got disgusted by that cruelty
I like how literally everyone in the room, despite their feelings towards each other, collectively gave that 'oh shit' look when Joffrey insulted Tywin and then the boss music started playing XD.
The only person Joffrey ever respected and loved dearly was Robert, even after his death he still speaks highly of him.
When he started with "my father..!" i was like, wait Jamie...? Only later I realized he doesnt know 😂
@@soirema 🤣
I wonder if that's part of the reason Joffrey is so out of control. His 'father' was a war hero and leader of a rebellion and became king. That's a lot to live up to for a young man. So Joffrey wants to live up to Robert's reputation and even surpass him. But his insecurities, combined with being spoiled rotten by Cersei, is why he becomes vicious and cruel.
@@TimberlakeTigerGirlno joffrey is just a straight up psychopath and nobody has any reason to dispute that. Ffs as a 6 year old he cut open a pregnant cat to “see if the maid told the truth” then paraded ned starks head, cowered everytime a battle happened, had no positive traits and just straightup was evil
i think joffrey just clings to the one person who could stand to tywin, moreso after his death since he no longer had to worry about what robert would actually do. as a baratheon joffrey's a king, as a lannister he's just tywin's grandson. also even joffrey was grossed out by cersei and jaime being incestuous, so at least he had that going for him
Tywin is the only man in the world to make the king going in his room and think about what he said like the little brat he is.
The faces of everyone at 2:24. So powerful.
when i saw this live, i was like holy shitballs!!! here we go!!! tywin let him off the hook, i wanted fireworks
Yep. They're all: Joffrey, you screwed up royally
You know you done fucked up right
Joffrey’s look of instant regret 😂
My favorite is tyrion. Having lived under tywins cruelty and threats his whole life that slight bit of amusement of it being pointed at someone else. And the infinite more amusement when tyrion realizes, that Geoffry realizes, that EVERYONE in the room is looking at him like he just goofed. All in one second. Grade a acting lol
'I AM NOT TIRED! '
'Any man , who says he isn't tired, is truly tired'
2:41 she jumped on that, i love how even Joffrey saw that he messed up.
This scene clearly shows how GREAT these actors are. Only through their faces we can see all those emotions.
I agree that all the actors are truly great, but to be honest, there was a bit of insulting and yelling too than conveyed their emotions.
The look of pure hatred in Tywin's face after Joffrey's insult is terrifying to behold. Charles Dance's performance as Tywin was pitch-perfect, captured the true spirit of his character better than anyone else in the series.
"Oh, a monster... Perhaps you should speak to me more softly, then. Monsters are dangerous and just now kings are dying like flies".
What a fucking brilliant line.
This scene shows what Game Of Thrones was at its finest. The dialogue, the acting, the looks, the music... Jack Gleeson, Peter Dinklage and Charles Dance are all spectacular here.
2:21 Tywin turns on hardcore mode
The silence in the chambers and then the ominous strings that start playing along with the way Tywin looks at him are just brilliant. Even a part of Joffrey realises “I just fucked up”!
The subtle violence that is in Tywin's voice when he says "The king is tired. See him to his chambers." is all that is needed.
It seems that Joffrey doesn't know the one rule of Westeros, "Do not fuck with Tywin Lannister"
except Tyrion did fuck with him, and Now he's dead
I still love this series but it went down a grade when tywin died
Well, he probably needed to die, but i wish he had lived a little longer
@@ivanmelkovich7698 why would he need to die?
@@grahamturner2640 he was too powerful as a character. you can't have a character in a show named Game of Thrones who is more powerful than the person who sits on the throne
@@mathze tywins death is meant to be a turning point in the story. In the books the war of the five kings had been going on for a while and tywin was firmly leading. However his hypocritical and cruel treatment of his son had caught up to him and after his death house lannister falls apart with tyrion becoming a cruel imp,Cersei getting a psychological breakdown and Jamie wanting nothing to do with his family. Unfortunately the show only touches on of these storylines
glad he's dead fuck Tywin
Notice how Pycelle betrays himself. Disrespects Tyrion by fumbling the message exchange and blaming old fingers, but deftly picks it up as he's leaving.
obviously everyone knew he dropped it on purpose to annoy tyrion
Varys’s facial expressions throughout this entire scene are amazing. He has one of the greatest minds in Westeros but keeps it concealed, great character.
With the subtle haunting music in the background and the sinister look on Tywin’s face, you can’t help but think back to those days at the end of the rebellion, visualizing images of the defenseless capital being needlessly sacked and the queen and her children being raped and butchered, all on Tywin’s orders.
This short scene gives us a rare glimpse into the true visage of the man behind the veil of stoicism and wisdom. A vicious and ruthless psychopath who will do anything and everything to maintain the flawed power structure he has spent his entire life stepping over bones to achieve.
That’s the real Tywin Lannister, and all the pretentious and contradictory speeches about family, legacy, and leadership won’t change the true nature of his actions.
Yea, very haunting indeed. One often question would he ordered many family members killed he found useless if it so suited him in better circumstances. If it meant keeping the family name strong. Would he had Geoffrey die in a freak accident? Cause it very well looks that way.
@@Wolf10media idk. Tywin is many things but I'm not sure he is a kinslayer.
He is all those things but I don’t know where u see it in this scene
@@olofacosta3192 He did admit to Tyrion that he'd cast him into the ocean if he hadn't bared the Lannister name. And note I said if they were useless to him. Family is all that is keeping the useless/incompetent alive.
@@Wolf10media IIRC there's a theory floating around the ASOIAF (book that GOT is based on) community that Tywin knew Tyrion was innocent, but he used the situation to kill two birds with one stone.
Excellent scene. When Joffrey insulted Tywin and the entire room went dead silent was amazing. Everyone, even Joffrey, knew he messed up. The look Cersei gives him, staring daggers, as to say "what Tyrion said about Kings dropping like flies is very real when you try your arrogance with Tywin".
tywin just reminded everyone in the room who's the real king.
The actors for Joffrey and Tywin are amazing. I almost wish we got more of them together but at the same time the little we have is made all the more special
At 02:32 Varys' expression is like "Boy you have no Idea how fucking mich you messed up right now." The other's faces are pure perfection as well.
Any man who must say he is not tired is in fact tired.
Tywin's internal monologue at 1:36: Not bad. Not bad.
There's so many funny moments like Lord Varys reaction to monster and "I am the King!!" and Cersei's gulp after Joffrey outburst against Tywin 🤣🤣🤣
Joffrey was basically king in name only. Everyone in the court knew he was a little shit, but they put up with him because the rules of succession.
Man tywin is awesome here. The king starts to go off on a rant and then when he insults him everyone looks almost expecting him to kill Joffery right then and there lol it was very clear who held the true power.
It reminds me of when Roose and Petyr were discussing the Lannister in season 5 after wedding Sansa. They bring up Tywin’s death then Jaime’s hand, and only then bring up King Tommen. It’s clear Tywin was more important than the king
The casting for the entire Lannister family was so good. EVERY actor and actress portrayed their characters flawlessly. Even the silence between dialogue has so much depth.
This scene is a masterpiece. The actors, the dialog, the music. 10+
I love how after Tyrion says the "kings are dying like flies"-line Joffrey *looks to Tywin* before reacting. And Tywin's like 'let's see - how do you deal with this?"
Tyrion by far had the best face….sitting back just sippin his tea face lmao he was so eager to see that exchange once Joffery crossed the line. He cuts his eyes immediately to his dad to see his reaction. Man what great writing lmao
I especially like tyrions expression after Joffreys outburst. You can tell he is humorously intrigued to see what tywins reply would be, everyone else is like "oh no he didnt*sassy finger wag*"
I love how everyone got serious when Joffery snapped at Tywin, they were ready to see that boy get dragged in that moment.
When Ceresi, Tywin , and Tyrion all agree you really messed up
The tension in that room after Joffrey made that I'll advised statement is legendary.
Lord Varys subtle face expressions are the best things about the small council scenes
2:16 Cersei looking at Jeoffrey like: "Oh no you didn't"
I love how in this scene everyone is like, "This punk yelled at Tywin?"
Yet another classic scene showing why Tywin was the greatest character in the show. He was the *only* player in the game of thrones that cared about the king’s sleep schedule, as he knew a well rested king would make wiser choices. What a nice grandpa!
Honestly Joffrey’s finest moment. He had a great point.
"Becoming the King doesn’t mean people will acknowledge you. But when the people acknowledge you, you can become King."
1:12 Love those moments when Cersei sees Joffrey for the monster he really is.
I always saw it a bit differently, personally. The remark "A joke! Joffrey did not mean it" came off as damage control. I feel like she knew what Joffrey meant, but wanted to tell him that he shouldn't be saying such things in front of his council. Any remotely capable person would have taken the hint and rolled with it, but Joffrey being the idiot he is, doubled down instead.
If anything, I figured Cersei was more so questioning the lack of intelligence her son possessed xD

The funny thing is that even after being a horrendous psychopath for a solid 90 seconds here, Joffrey gets in one piercing dagger of cold hard truth. And everyone knows it, which is why none of them rush to correct Joffrey and instead wait to see what Tywin will do. And Tywin's answer is frankly as lame and cowardly as can be, but delivered with his usual steely arrogance to jolt everyone back to reality and remember who they take orders from.
That’s the best part. Joffrey is completely correct. Tywin has a reputation for being a skilled war strategist but the truth is that he’s mostly just an opportunistic snake. He only declared for Robert immediately prior to the final battle of the war and he was consistently out-matched by Robb during the War of Northern independence, only winning the war by way of assassination.
His response is indeed very cowardly. He can’t refute Joffrey’s assertion and he would only further embarrass himself by trying, so he instead exercises his authority by forcibly ending the conversation.
@@mphylo2296 I didn't even think of that. Tywin even mentions that Robert patted him on the back a lot. Ned once had said "then why is Robert King, and not Tywin Lannister" when Littlefinger tried to get Ned Stark to fear him.
"You just sent the most powerful man in Westeros to bed without his supper. "
Tyrion sums the scene up fairly well in this next line after this cuts off.
"any man who must i am the king is no true king"
*scares the king without saying a word 5 seconds later*
When most people are intimidating with a look, they are looking down on someone. Whenever Tywin does it, he's looks up. Amazing.
the amount of respect and fear joffrey have for robert is amazing. he trully believe thats his real father and the way he killed targarien prince and took the crown is like a wet dream for him. He thinks hes like his "father", but we all can see they have nothing in common.
Like either of them, frankly; guess Joffrey was really a mama's boy.
That's maybe the one positive aspect of Joffrey; his respect for Robert.

Varys’ face at 1:32 is priceless.
Know how this scene is made of Tywin... But when Tyrion delivers his, "Speak softly then, monsters are dangerous beasts and now kings are dying like flies." That was a hard rap on Joffrey.
Not harder than when he slapped him 3 times tho
Underrated moment: Varys rolling his eyes at "I AM........THE KING"
Despite how hated Joffrey was jack played him absolutely phenomenally. Gutted he lost his passion 😢
Well you can thank the fans for that one. Poor guy got death threats because of how well he played Joffrey; a bit too well at times.

The subtle, yet powerful tones of ‘The Rains of Castamere’ in the background represents perfectly how Tywin dominates this scene and in particular the “King”. Joffrey might’ve been the king, but it was Tywin who ruled.
That sudden change in music, atmosphere, and everyones expression at 2:23, when joffery says that is brilliant. Even jofferys face afterwards because what he's been made to believe has been a lie.
I am not.... TIRED! the performances in this scene alone is top notch
I love how in the books, he had Kevan send Joffrey to bed and then roasted Cersei so hard on being a shit mother that even Tyrion came to her defense
The last time he spoke was just to mock him and that look on his face just completed it
The Maester deftly plucking up that note at the end, just to show that yes, he intentionally dropped it in the first place, was a nice touch
2:24

Joffrey: Oh crap!
Cersei: I cannot protect you Joffrey!
