It takes talent to play a character so well people hate you for it. He was amazing at playing the cocky abusive king who abused his power but then later is shown to really be a sniveling coward who begs and pleads for his life.

Earlier in this series King Aella had a general of his, who had lost a battle to the Vikings, tossed into the same pit of vipers.
In real life/the saga he found out it was Ragnar who he had thrown into the pit only after he threw him in and tried to get him out as quickly as possible but Ragnar still died from the poison

The hot knife was to cauterize the big incision that was made down his back. Cauterizing stops that cut from bleeding so he won’t die of blood loss. It was a methodical and cruel way to kill him, which I’m sure was exactly the point. To set him out on a display is meant as both a message to others not to cross them and of their ferocity, aswell as a tribute that their father could see from Valhalla. Revenge for their fathers death is not only about righting a wrong that was done to them. It was also about helping to make sure that Valhalla was the place he went and not hel.
Interesting. I thought it was just done to cut through the flesh easily. Because the king does seem to die from blood loss by the end.

The hacking of the ribs is a much more traumatic/damaging process.

Well, he'd have died out of shock and suffocated as soon as the first rib cracked open. You don't survive an entire ritual, the body will kill itself before that. But it is pretty badass.

I like the subtle brutality detail of heating the knife so the wounds were cauterized (to a degree) and he didn’t lose as much blood, so he would stay alive as long as possible. It’s a subtle but terrifying detail.

Ubbe basked and relished the execution, Hvitserk and Sigurd were happy with the sweet feeling of revenge, Ivar was captivated by the ritual and only Bjørn was slightly shaken as he had the best seat in the house.

Can we appreciate the talent of the actors, more specifically ivan's acting?? all the raw screaming, his expressions, the emotions, plus the scene in general, you could feel the tension, so fuckin real dude. No doubt one of the best scenes in the show.
When I see Bjorn on the show, I always think "my how the district 1 tribute from Hunger Games has grown into a man!"

F. Format The little piggies are Ragnar's children. He has called them little pigs lots of times and when mentioning himself, he would call himself an old boar.
If you remember from one of the first episodes in season one, Ragnar says "it's a fine thing when a little pig teaches an old boar a lesson". Ragnar said this when Bjorn told Ragnar and Lagertha off for fighting.

Floki getting up in the King’s face is probably the scariest thing I’ve seen in this show. It shows truly how ruthless Floki can be when he’s angry
Not just that,... the sheer fascination on Ivar's face, to see such pain expressed. Ivar really wánts to know how painful it is, it intrigues him
What makes this more satisfying is that when Ælla and his men tortured and killed Ragnar, Ragnar didn't cry, beg, break, and didn't fear death. But when the Vikings punished and killed him, he cried, beg and even tried to bribe them, and was very scared, and hopeless.

oldedude51 came close to the moment myself but pulled through. Vehicle crash. Pinned starting to burn. Accepted it and felt no pain. Likely from the shock but still no fear or pain. Was pulled from the wreck before suffering too many burns. Had a very large injury above my left eye to the top of my left ear from the windshield pillar folding downward and pinning me. Anyway mostly wanted to say when you havw determined that the moment has arrived, your body releases enough endorphines to grant you pain free passage. I lived through and the pain of daily burn dressing changes by far excedes any pain that a human should endure

The actor who played the king, Thorbjørn Harr, who portrayed Jarl Borg of Götaland, who received the Blood Eagle, deserves an Academy Award. He had me feeling his pain. Utterly brutal. Well done.

People seem to forget that it was the Vikings who attacked Aellas kingdom. Not the other way around.

He wanted to watch the life leave Aella's eyes.
The thing I enjoy most about the scene is that Aella killed Ragnar, who probably would have taken the offer of gold and silver over having him killed. But his children are a different story altogether and it's beautiful.
Ragnar had it planned, even though he would killed. He knew that once they heard about his death, his sons would come after Aella and avenge him, and that's exactly what happened.
Yea wouldnt have taken the offer of gold and silver if one of his loved ones were killed. Jarl borg threaten to kill his family and he got blood eagled. If a Christian was to kill one of his loved ones he’s getting blood eagled without a doubt

Poor Ælle. When you think about it, all he actually did was try to defend his kingdom and his people from invasion. The TV show made him out to be a complete dick but in real life he could have been a decent and honourable man who was simply doing his duty to his people
We never really got to see things from Aelle’s perspective bar a few occasions. The show chose to present things from the Viking’s perspectives.
History is written by the victors. Unfortunately we can go in circles forever and no matter what, both sides will feel justified in their actions and hurt by the others. An eye for an eye makes the whole world blind

The amount of pain resulting from this kind of damage to the nervous system will probably cause the dude to go into shock and pass out pretty quickly. Not a very quick death for sure, but the suffering is not as drawn out as some of the other types of torture humans are capable of.
Remember though the blood eagle was more of a gruesome display than a means of execution. You'd die long before the got to the lungs. Either from blood loss, shock or asphyxiation
this show is soooooo underrated!!! and bjorns death was so well done that my anger about the character being killed off dissipated.

People just tend to feel more positive thoughts and emotions about someone's death when it's someone you hate or you think deserved it. Ragnar's sons decided that Aella would pay for executing their father by giving him the same fate, according to their customs. Aella was begging, blubbering and just about shitting his pants before they killed him. He realizes that his offer of riches wasn't going to work, and yes, they were going to kill him, and he is absolutely petrified.
Brutal scene. But the actual setting of it is so beautiful. The forest, the rain, how grey and dreary everything looks. God, I hate Summer so much. I want to live where it’s cold and rainy like this all year.

they should've kept to the history and had the first battle fight to a standstill and show Ivar tricking Aelle into giving him York and then show the defeat of Aelle in a second battle.
Perhaps they were already over budget. History Channel's focus seems to have been on recreating authentic Viking culture. There is another show, a BBC production, which may offer a more accurate depiction of historical facts, including this war. Surely they will give Aella more respect than he here receives.
