The hot knife was to cauterize the big incision that was made down his back. Cauterizing stops that cut from bleeding so he won’t die of blood loss. It was a methodical and cruel way to kill him, which I’m sure was exactly the point. To set him out on a display is meant as both a message to others not to cross them and of their ferocity, aswell as a tribute that their father could see from Valhalla. Revenge for their fathers death is not only about righting a wrong that was done to them. It was also about helping to make sure that Valhalla was the place he went and not hel.

Yeah, Aella was a world class dick. He ordered the murder of norse women and children living in the little villages set up along the English coast while the men were out fighting. It was supposed to demoralize them and make them want to leave. Thank the Gods he got what was coming to him.

The amount of pain resulting from this kind of damage to the nervous system will probably cause the dude to go into shock and pass out pretty quickly. Not a very quick death for sure, but the suffering is not as drawn out as some of the other types of torture humans are capable of.

If someone murdered my father, then offered me gold or silver....it’d be an insult. They’d surely die a brutal death then. My fathers life is worth more than any gold or silver. And if they take me as someone who would treasure that more than my father, that’s a double insult.

People just tend to feel more positive thoughts and emotions about someone's death when it's someone you hate or you think deserved it. Ragnar's sons decided that Aella would pay for executing their father by giving him the same fate, according to their customs. Aella was begging, blubbering and just about shitting his pants before they killed him. He realizes that his offer of riches wasn't going to work, and yes, they were going to kill him, and he is absolutely petrified.

Perhaps they were already over budget. History Channel's focus seems to have been on recreating authentic Viking culture. There is another show, a BBC production, which may offer a more accurate depiction of historical facts, including this war. Surely they will give Aella more respect than he here receives.
