i and 14 but like a year ago a cinema near me had reruns and i was only like halfway through the books and when i saw the ride of the rohirrim is was speachless
Bernard Hill! 🤩 Phenomenal is exactly right. He was excellent throughout, and embodied Theoden perfectly. But his portrayal in RoTK was nothing short of *exceptional!* The Battle of The Pelennor Fields is one of the greatest moments in cinematic history, but it rests on the back of his performance and wouldn't come close to the same heights without it.
Riding off willingly into almost certain death. And then as he lay dying, he was glad that he was now worthy to be buried in the company of his brave ancestors before him. So... powerful...
Bernard Hill as Theoden King was Magnificent; he had come a LONG way since he was the Praetorian guard who named Caligula's goofy uncle Claudius as Emperor in "I, Claudius(1976)! He points to the cringing Claudius, who's hoping to not be killed by the Praetorian Guard who had perforated Caligula moments earlier, "Hey!(in a wonderful, cheesy British accent), He'll make a good emperor...!" What a classic scene, from a classic movie(a remake of ANOTHER classic movie, made pre-WW2), based on a magnificent classic historical novel. How can you go wrong?
Not that the rides of Rohan have 3 major fights and they have to suffer the most casualties a castle defence with a horse charge in pike then they do it again at the galaden field and finally with Aragon at the black gates to to mention they lost there king there kinda following the heir apparent and there full king with Aragon but still Rohanean had to suffer the most
Lord of the Rings trilogy is incomparable. Nothing can ever beat them. Peter Jackson really created not 1 but 3 masterpieces and kept on making them better and more intense. Return of the King had the best reinforcement scenes. not only did we get the Ride of the Rohirrim, but straight after we get an enemy reinforcement with the Haradrim's Mûmakil charge followed by the arrival of Aragorn, Legolas and Gimli with the Dead Men of Dunharrow
@Posstulio I had the same issue with the army of the dead. They entire city could've fallen and all the people there dead, and the army of the dead still washes over Sauron's forces like a wave and kills them all. It dismisses all the valor beforehand, both of the men of Gondor and men and woman of Rohan ... and hobbits ... and Gandalf ... and horses ... ... ... okay, I think that's it.
That battle had so many different plot twists and turning points. I thought Twin Towers was the more emotional movie, especially when Gandolf showed up with the Riders of Rohirrim at the end, but the Battle of Pelennor Fields was a true MasterClass in telling story through huge action set pieces. Marvel's grand scale battles always aspire to be LOTR, but they never quite get there.
The Lotr series is such a classic. No idea why they don't make more high-fantasy movies like that. Don't they know we're burned out on superhero movies T_T
Like The Hobbit and the garbage that is "the rings of power" they rely too much on CGI. Back when the original LOTR was made, there were more real casting, costumes and props for sets. Why? Because CGI requires less effort and money. Sadly, the passion to do masterpiece through hardwork comes very few nowadays. That's why we can't have anything like it anymore.
I sat in the theater during return of the king and the entire theater shook with the horns and the horse charge. I still get goosebumps seeing the scene
The charge and Theoden's speech will never not bring a tear to my eyes, everything about it is absolutely perfect and the fact that everyone of them isn't riding for glory or even victory but to to look into the face of death itself and charge right at it with nothing but triumphant force, it's incredable.
As the Polish Winged Hussars did in 1683 at Vienna in human history for saving the seat of Christianity in Europe, the Ride of Rohirrum enters into legend for filmmaking history for Lord of the Rings.
a LOTR fan once told me the symbolism of the scene. Morgoth put the fear of death into men's hearts. Here, Theoden screams Death because they're letting the children of Morgoth know it has no power over them; scared or not, they're coming.
in my opinion there's only 2 scenes something close to rohirrim epicness: the cliffs fight scene of the last of the Mohicans. No fairy tale fantasy ending, just raw as fuck. No effects, all real, and the music holding the tension high.... And the end of flight club. That's my top 3
He definitely should have been nominated for Return of the King, because that scene was just so phenomenal and epic. It’s definitely one of the greatest movie scenes of all time.

If I remember correctly, the director only let those who read the book be at the front line, because they were the only ones that understood the feeling behind it
One of the things I love most about LOTR and The Hobbit is how the music is done. When they're hyping up the men, readying their weapons, and charging into battle, the music is inspiring and really makes you feel the strength of the army. The second they make contact with the enemy, the music falls silent. All you can hear is screams, metal on metal, and arrows flying. It's feels much more grounded and "personal" than battle music blaring in the background.
One scene i think that should be here, is when Baldwin arrives in Kingdom of Heaven, the line "Jersusalem has come", the shot where you can see them beyond the haze, the soundtrack, and the decisions of both leaders is just so good
@@chucksison9199 theres no need for a battle though, its the execution of dialogue, the atmosphere, the tension between sahladeen and baldwin and their wisdom that prevented a war to break out that would've greatly damaged both sides.
I remember that. I agree, it was just so good. And the way it was played into a talking match- even as a young man I understood how interesting that was
Theoden’s speeches and Rohirrim charge always give me goosebumps no matter how many times I watch the trilogy. The music also accentuates the scenes. LotR is simply timeless.
Battle of helms deep will go down as one of the most epic fights in movie history. Then the mad lad Peter Jackson did it again with the ride of the rohirrim. Absolutely top class cinema.

Endgame has its flaws, but Steve Rodgers standing alone, tired and injured, against an army led by Thanos is such a perfect representation of what makes him a hero
Eomer doesnt get enough cred. He got men so loyal to him that they abandon their king, he is out there doing Good work and then rejoins the king when Rohan needs it.
Fortunately, it wasn't in the book. Eomer fought with Aragorn and Theoden at Helms Deep. Grimbeorn led the relief expedition (with Gandalf) of the reformed men from the battles at the ford of Isen. Oh, and the Huorns surrounded the Orcs, and no orc made it out from under those trees.
The last clip where king Theoden yelling out death always gives me the chills every time I watch this movie. That's why the lord of the rings will always be my favorite trilogy of all time
My sister and I watched the two towers about 15 times - I remember we were standing in line to buy tickets to see it again and finally noticed they had removed it from the lineup…
Saruman mocked him as 'a lesser Kingof greater Sires'..".. Theoden died, on the field of battle, as a féarless Leader, commanding the Rohirrim through the onslaught of Sauron's Orc Legions, and even the Haradrim... to be bested by none less then the King of the Nazgul...who was defeated, along his Nazgul mount, by Eowen! Theoden would be go down in history as one of the greatest Kings of Rohan! Saruman was wrong abotu a great many things, but his greatest error was his misjudgement of Theoden of Rohan!
@@roulek7491 It really is! I grew up in the 90s and remember how hyped I was as a kid seeing them arrive when all hope seemed lost. This just feels like the director looked at that, said "I can do that too," and copied the scene verbatim without putting any real emotion or stakes into it.
LOTR where the roherrim arrive at minas tirith is based on an actual event, when the winged hussars of Poland reinforced a city under Turkish siege, and charged down from the highlands and broke the siege
Reading about the siege of Vienna and the scale of that one charge will just blow your mind, I think it was 20,000 heavy cavalry charging into 100,000 Turks or something like that.

Ride of the Rohirm sound track man.........I can't even explain how there's never been an orchestra arranged in a better way of good vs evil. Makes every scene phenomenal
I have watched it dozens of times and it still brings a tear to the eye. Even Gandalf's expression when he realizes Rohan really did answer the call. That combined with the moment where Theoden weighs his options back when Aragorn says "The Beacons! The beacons are lit!" and Theoden KNOWS that he could live longer if he didn't answer the call, but decides to anyway, because mankind must stand together... that momentary expression from Gandalf says 'There really is hope for this world, when we can count on each other'.
@@JB-xl2jc exactly. Gandalf’s purpose in the books, and to a slightly lesser extent in the movies, is to unite the people’s of middle earth as “The Grey”. Once he becomes the white he’s the head of the order but still maintains his purpose of unification. That look on his face expresses probably the first time in a long while, at least in the books, that nations of men came together under one unifying purpose. Such a great scene
I read 15-20 of the comments down below and all of you talked about LOTR!! It is hard to describe how it feels when you watch your favorite characters from the books come alive on a huge screen! Or just characters (not in the books). Some stories and epic scenes stay with you forever if the Director and Composer did a good job. You watch it again and again and the hunger to see it again only intensifies. The music only adds to the scenes and all the HAIR on the body stands up, saluting for a job well done! Like you guys, I've seen the first 3 LOTR countless times and no matter how many more times I will watch it again, it never get's boring. It took over 4 months for the CGI team to get that battle scene.
I am unsure of how many actually knows that the Rohirrim Charge at the Battle of Pelenor Fields is likely a historical reference to the Siege of Vienna 1683. - At the time, Vienna was considered the gateway to Europe and it was widely recognized that if it was to fall, the turks would have no problem advancing further into Europe. The turks were MANY more than the force defending Vienna, so a call for aid was sent out and Poland (a mighty force at the time) among others responded and arrived at Vienna with almost 20.000 cavalry! - It was the Polish King Sobieski and The Winged Hussars that in 1683 wrote themselves into history books as the largest ever cavalry charge ever recorded! Try reading through both stories once more and you'll see that despite some differences the similarities of The Siege of Vienna 1683 with Tolkien's Battle of Pelenor Field are striking! Of course the Rohirrim Charge at the Battle of Pelenor Fields is THE charge of cinema history! - Everytime I watch it, I just wish I could relive the first time I watched again and again with the emotions attached while at the cinema! - EPIC!
Man, I cannot keep it together every time I see Chadwick walk out of the portal. They couldn't have picked a more perfect first face for Steve to see. Rest in power, King T'Challa.
The Charge of the Rohirrim is no doubt the most powerful movie scene ever made. I cry every time I see it. It's just a fucking masterpiece. Theodes speech and the way they all know they're most likely riding to their deaths but still doing it becomes some things just need to happen and Saurun needs to lose. The way they all scream DEATH and run right into the afterlife with a big "FUCK YOU!" written all over their faces. Just downright flawless.
I am so invested in all of these scenes, especially The Lord of The Rings one’s. You are an amazing person for putting this together! I’m still crying and tearing up everytime! (Yes, I’ve watched several times, and enjoy and shed a tear everytime.) Thank you.

I'm over here outside by myself getting goosebumps watching Theoden just do his thing. Such a phenomenal actor.
Bernard Hill! 🤩
Phenomenal is exactly right.
He was excellent throughout, and embodied Theoden perfectly.
But his portrayal in RoTK was nothing short of *exceptional!*
The Battle of The Pelennor Fields is one of the greatest moments in cinematic history, but it rests on the back of his performance and wouldn't come close to the same heights without it.
He points to the cringing Claudius, who's hoping to not be killed by the Praetorian Guard who had perforated Caligula moments earlier, "Hey!(in a wonderful, cheesy British accent), He'll make a good emperor...!"
What a classic scene, from a classic movie(a remake of ANOTHER classic movie, made pre-WW2), based on a magnificent classic historical novel.

Gr8 point
@Posstulio I had the same issue with the army of the dead. They entire city could've fallen and all the people there dead, and the army of the dead still washes over Sauron's forces like a wave and kills them all. It dismisses all the valor beforehand, both of the men of Gondor and men and woman of Rohan ... and hobbits ... and Gandalf ... and horses ... ... ... okay, I think that's it.
That's why in the books they basically can't interact with the corporeal and are there just to spook the enemy.
@@chendaddy, the Twin Towers were in New York until 9/11. You’re thinking of The Two Towers.
The Lotr series is such a classic. No idea why they don't make more high-fantasy movies like that. Don't they know we're burned out on superhero movies T_T
fr bro
True, Super hero movies have turned out into comedy films.....
We are burned out on mediocre, half-assed products....I don't remember the last that I saw a movie that had real effort put into it
Like The Hobbit and the garbage that is "the rings of power" they rely too much on CGI.

Howard Shore did wonders with and for those films.
The music is onze of the best things of the movies
One scene i think that should be here, is when Baldwin arrives in Kingdom of Heaven, the line "Jersusalem has come", the shot where you can see them beyond the haze, the soundtrack, and the decisions of both leaders is just so good
It is good but there is no battle happens in the end
@@chucksison9199 theres no need for a battle though, its the execution of dialogue, the atmosphere, the tension between sahladeen and baldwin and their wisdom that prevented a war to break out that would've greatly damaged both sides.

Nothing WILL EVER beat the Rohirrim riding out one last time. LOTR was pinnacle cinema.
- EPIC!
Thanks for that history lesson. Truly awesome to show that real life can sometimes be more potent than fantasy!
