The depth leading up to this scene is just so amazing. His reasoning for "wanting to be baptized" so when he dies he can be with Asthelstan, and giving justification for his later request when he "dies" to have a Christian Mass. Then first thing he does when jumping out is kill the bishop, which I think he had 2 reasons for it. 1. To show he is not bluffing, and 2. to prove to his men the baptism didn't mean anything.

There is plenty of similar stories like this that repeat throughout middleges with simalr main point - capturing city/castle by ruse not by force and especially in Norse literary tradition. The reason they include stories like this is probably number 1 reason: They don't have to mention that they sent their soldiers to their deaths for their vain wars, while getting to praise their military successes.

“I am constantly torn between killing myself and killing everyone around me.”
Ragnar is one of the absolute most interesting characters in cinematic history. He is so complex and has such a duality and the constant battle within himself is so beautifully portrayed.
3:55-4:30 The facial expressions of Ragnar give away so much. His constant struggle with his own fate. With who he is, as a man, a father, a king and a living legend. He has just conquered Paris in a brilliant way, and yet there is not a sign of victory on his face.
On the contrary. He looks like a man, who has lost all hope.
Ragnar: I have something to say. I did not become Earl because I aspired to be one. It came about because of other people's actions.
And I did not become king out of ambition, but once again I had no choice as a result of other people's actions. But nonetheless, I am king.
King Ragnar, that is my name.
What does a king do Bjorn?
    Bjorn: He rules.
And so Ragnar ruled. Because fate would have it.

Ragnar still the favourite character even tho he died, as soon as I see him almost dying I was about to cry but I realized that he was still alive because I remember the seer's prophecy and the fact that the fucking coffin is going straight into the kingdom.

two things I especially enjoy in these scene: Ragnar killing the bishop but at the same time letting the Princess go, because he won´t kill a defensless woman and Björn just standing there, without saying anything, lifting his arms as a command... that one was magnificent, giving a good forcast of how powerful Björn would become in the future.

Imagine the guts to do such a feat and imagine how brilliant his mind was, his army going to attack and the king returning with already half of victory, the thought process of cutting the ropes and him being gentle with her to leave her in the mid way so she has ample time to be safe, what a genius and kind man, No wonder his name is “King Ragnar”

I think this was actual Bjorn's move on one of the old Italian cities on 7 hills but they used this story here. There is a story of this but most of them are talking about conquering Rome to make it more dramatic but it was one of the unkown city.

The Viking warlord Harald Hardrada actually did this trick when besieging a city in Sicily. It’s written in his saga. That’s where the show got the idea from. Harald later became King of Norway. He was also Christian, at least formally, and fought for the Greeks as a mercenary for many years
