One thing I'll always say the shield wall was always done better in the last kingdom series... but I'll always love vikings!!
Last Kingdom is probably the worst show with Vikings to date. And that's saying something, considering how poor Vikings was 😂
Early Vikings had some nice shield wall battles.
However, this scene was nuts. Björn shouts "shield wall" which they form but right afterwards they start charging loosely so the wall is gone...
Its a TV Show, not a documentary or what ever. So... besides some nerds, who in cold hell cares?

I agree, a 1000 year old phalanx held elephants and armies away, they can’t even hold 50 men then what’s the point
A further thought on the Phalanx, perhaps maybe because it would have taken such a rigorous amount of training, drill, practice, day in day out. Not ONE man could turn and run or it would fail. They had to be tremendously disciplined and drilled, a very very professional group of soldiers. Maybe it was just so timely to invest that much time, money, food, etc.. into training an Army to be on that level.

@@hawkinatorgamer9725 Greek Hoplite Phalanx's consisted mainly of militias. The Term hoplite is literally Citizen-Soldier. They would only drill during the summer months for a few weeks at a time and possibly go to a few week long campaign before going home. It was a cultural expectation to be that disciplined and to fight in that custom. Ancient warriors were built different.

George B. The battle is wrong. Historically allea beats the Viking force and is captured at York by the danes some time after the battle. Saxons where as hard as nails.

I think this show had the best battle actions scene that would even outclass movie scenes. They were epic.
Most of the battles are jokes. Its just people running at each other. None of the historical tactics they actually used. They call for shield walls which both the english and danes used historically but then they break shield wall formation immediately. The point of a formation is you stay in it.

@@WyWall no point staying in shield wall if you outnumber and the other side isnt attacking. I believe they called it in case the other side took such position also or decided for a ranged attack.

Ready call/mark before the charge and intimidation. Both sides of a tribe in New Zealand would preform a Haka before battle just to intimidate their opponents. "Shield Wall" was basically their call that it's time to mess people up. Or you know, it's a TV show and it looks as hell lol

Normal formation battles in Vikings ended in seasons 2-3. In the 4th season and beyond, these are no longer battles in formations, but simply dumps - and the fact that Bjorn seems to be commanding his warriors "wall of shields" does not affect anything - after all, immediately after that the Vikings simply run forward without any formation. Anglo-Saxons do the same.
It can be seen that the directors of the battles, who knew a lot about this, left the show. Probably - to the Last Kingdom - because the battles there are staged perfectly
thats what happens when the show becomes "popular" , which turns an educational fiction into an enjoyment for the populi.
Yeah, but the series likes to develop the characters, showing the rise of great heroes, and a shield wall battle would be boring and wouldn't give freedom of movement to the actors. Even The Last Kingdom has moments of breaking reality, like when Uhtred alone jumps suicidally in front of a shield wall, breaking through and killing everyone. In Vikings this is just done more often.

The picts/celts were greater than vikings they fought naked no armour no nothing, the vikings could never conquer them the dna of modern day scots prove that.

Read about a berserker who, in real life, stood alone against the english army of 7000 men and defeated his them one by one and defended stamford bridge on his own to give his people a chance to get out before being surrounded. They army only defeated him in the end by a ranged attack because they used a spear to stab him from below the span of the bridge as he couldn’t be taken down in upfront battle.
This is the tale of a warrior. Standing alone against 7000 men and actually being able to defend the bridge so well on his own that a whole army have to find another way to kill him is insane.
I absolutely love Vikings, but I think Spartans would have that title as they would happily die by spartan law in glorious death crushing their enemies and there training and selection was just so effective in its day. A 1000 Spartans against 1000 Vikings or Northman would be no more than a workout for the Spartans in there Prime.
But may I be clear, I love Vikings they are very high in the totem pole of warriors and great people of history, there sea voyages alone deserve respect, best analogy I heard is that the Vikings were like the navy seals of there day striking without warning from the sea or rivers and were also very accomplished traders and travellers as well as warriors, and dispute not really having a written language were very cultured and intelligent for the times because of this.
It's a shame that the Viking Kings converted to Christianity for wealth and power, as I thing Europe and the world lost something special when they changed or die out from the Pegan ways.

When leaders actually went to war and led their troops. Should be done today. Maybe they would think twice about sending our troops to war.
I think that's a wives tale- that notion that leaders wouldn't go into battle if they were the ones swinging the swords. No leader would actually lead a battle- that would be the ultimate definition in micro-managing. And it has nothing to do with act of killing or be killed. Its more about smart battlefield strategic planning. Good leaders never do the dirty work- at any time in any industry- or in any battle.

Two sides fight against eachother inside me when se this. My norse (swedish) side who feel little bit machoproud ewen if it was my danish and norwegian siblings who raided england.
