Things I remember years after watching Vikings: Ragnar sitting on his blackened throne. Floki yelling at the Storm. Athelstan's death at the hand of Floki after his vision from the Gods. Rolo eating ungodly amounts of mushrooms. Lagatha being the pinnacle of badass women. & Torstein dying like the greatest Hero you've never heard of. I felt like I lost a brother. I liked him almost as much as Athelstan & Floki.
He probably knew he was gonna die when he fucked up his arm. In their culture, there's no use in trying to treat injuries because they believed in fate; that the gods would decide if they lived or not. So I guess Torstein knew his time was near and wanted to secure his seat in Valhalla. For those that don't know, Valhalla is where you'd go if you died in battle. Torstein died fighting, so it's not really a suicide.
I hate how they always kill off Ragnar's allies and shit and they always make you feel like hes so alone. right now he can really only trust bjorn, lagertha, and floki somewhat. while back in the day he had so many loyal soldiers. the dude with the eyepatch that rollo killed, Torstein, and a dude with a blonde beard. its honestly depressing

Ragnars reaction to thorstein saying that he will go first is one of the many reasons why nobody else but travis could be ragnar. The way his eyes and subtle smile say "damn right" is the most believable reaction to a brother wanting to give himself to 'god' knowing it is his time. Beautiful acting . Flokis reaction too .

Seeing your Gods descend to greet you as you draw your final breath staring into the blue sky. *VIKING* *& THE ENTIRE VIKING ARMY YELLING IN VENGENCE FOR YOUR DEATH. That's not a Rallying Cry. I don't think that is correct. A standing army, being a professional army paid to be in constant service, would not exist until the 1600's. These would be men who lived on their lords land. The point about armour still stands though. They would be wearing linen and wool underneath mail and their shields would be wooden rather than metal shown here. They also seem to be wearing brigandine which wouldn't come to europe until the 12th century. Their aventail also seems to be made from iron links, like mail, inlaid in fabric. Odd.
