    Clamber, with a heart of steel
    Cold is the ocean's spray
    And your death is on its way

    Ancient nordic poem, as my great grand father Amon Peter Jacob Jessen used to recite in his hardtimes: Upp skal á kjöl klífa,
    köld er sjávar drífa.
    / Kostaðu hug að herða, / hér skaltu lífið verða. /Skafl beygjattu skalli, / þótt skúr á þig falli. / Ást hafðir þú meyja,
    eitt sinn skal hver deyja..
    To fit the scene, it was addapted to : Up onto the overturned keel / Clamber, with a heart of steel
    / Cold is the ocean's spray / And your death is on its way / With maidens you have had your way / EACH MUST DIE SOME DAY!

      @helgi1921 11 месяцев назад

      Actually a better translation (and a more direct one) is something like this:
      Let's climb upon the keel/ the ocean spray is cold/ there's a price to bravery(or "brace yourself" as the meaning)/ you will die here/ a snowy mound will cover your head(this part makea little to no sense)/ though a drissle will fall on you/ you recieved my love maiden/ every man has to die
      Old Norse is awesome when you are Icelandic, since it is perfectly readable to us :)

    What you guys are also forgetting is the Viking culture only focused on a few things in their lives. Mainly the basics of survival; farming/hunting for food and clothing so they don’t freeze in the cold climate of the north, fighting for survival/raiding/conquest, carpentry for houses and boatbuilding (which at the time their longboats were better than any other cultures). They focused heavily on fighting even from a very early age because a lot of them were raiders and adventurers so they had to know how to defend themselves and to me I think they just love to fight. They were very smart and prioritize strategy when it came to warfare. A lot of people think they were just berserk savages but look at how they inventive and successful their shield wall was. They lived to fight to impress their gods. Yes they never really cared for reading or learning in the most common way like going to school or being taught. They really didn’t even have an alphabet and just had runes or what I call chicken scratch lol. That’s one of the reasons we don’t really know everything about their culture like most because a lot of the stuff they left behind we can’t read or decipher. They were also described as giants by many cultures as in they were very big in stature. They were hard laborers so they were also very muscular and fit for fighting. So a handful of Viking raiders could most likely take out a platoon of soldiers with no problem. That’s why the “Great Heathen Army” was so feared among all of England.

      Feared ofcourse for many reasons. But the saxon culture was identical to that of the scandanavians. Only difference being in religion. If a viking army faced off against a Saxon army, there would have been very little difference in appearence.
      There was never a place in the world the vikings had been defeated in battle more than england, for those wars were back and forth for almost a century. The likes of Alfred the Great, king Aethelstan, Edmund Ironside, Hereward the Wake etc . . . Give testamant to the warlike nature of (arguably the greatest foe to the vikings) the Saxons.

    Nice scene, but in real history we know that the anglo-saxons weren't pushovers as they were cousins to the Vikings. The Vikings had the advantage of surprise (coming from the sea), and therefore local advantage in numbers, but they had to get in and out before locals gathered their forces. So it's not at all a sure thing that those few vikings put up against that many armored soldiers would have ever left that beach alive.

    The Vikings were smart like the Romans, forming a shield wall to let their opponents expend themselves on it, and whittling them down. Unlike the Romans, having a berserker or two as a wild card helps make the enemy freak out. Next time the invaders come on a beach, they should just settle for a game of vollyball, or throwing a frisbee. Slightly less bloodshed that way.

    When the vikings arrived to the Spanish coast of the Asturias kingdom at the time of Spanish king Ramiro I, circa year 840, there was a batle in the beach near la Coruña with the customary standard result: Real Madrid 7, Athletic Malmöe 0.
    In other words, out of 3,000 warriors navigating in 150 drakkars, could only leave to continue sailing (may be to America?) 1,500 in 80 drakkars, and with no prey or gold. Lesson: The lion is not that fierce as they depict it.

    I see people asking why the English didn't outflank the Vikings.
    First of all, the Vikings are in a shield wall, straight in the middle, bending backwards from the sides, which makes flanking difficult.
    Secondly, they were being slaughtered too quickly to go around.
    Third, a few fighters, like Floki were behind the shield wall, so anyone who tried to go behind, would be killed too.
    Lastly, the heat of battle is too much to maneuver, and too little people.

      Bruh, the saxons could have just enveloped the vikings. They had far greater numbers than the vikings too, so a pincer move would be perfect! Divide the force in two and send one half to attack the left flank and the other half to attack the right flank. Only have them divide once they’ve gotten close to the enemy formation. Have the saxons maintain a tight formation and lock their shields. Get the archers to hang back and shoot the vikings in their unguarded sides as they attempt to defend their flanks. This would also likely divide the viking army in two. With arrows in their asses and their comrades being cut down left and right, the remaining vikings will now begin to waver against the numerically superior and more disciplined saxons. In this show the vikings also just decided to not wear armor, so I’d say the saxons would win not only this battle, but most battles.

      @@epineda1124 Saxons were around the same height though. Not only that, but they were very muscular as well. People forget that the saxons consisted of groups of warrior peoples. They may have been even better nourished and muscular than the norsemen themselves. Vikings weren’t overpowered and unstoppable like the show portrays them, and they probably couldn’t take out a platoon of trained men-at-arms unless they themselves were well trained men at arms. They were mostly reavers and would flee when any actual resistance shows up. They were only successful because of this combined with their exploration and trading. Vikings traded a lot btw.

      @@REALdavidmiscarriage U know, we have a song here, which says: it's easy to criticise, it's hard to create. So, before you criticise, show us how it's done. And who are you, if I might ask? It's such a pity that such highly intelligent minds like urself cannot grasp the idea that this show was made mainly for entertainment and not so much to educate u historically. But since you know everything, I guess you can't find fun in anything that contradicts ur high knowledge, which we the ordinary people are not endowed with :)

      @@NightWhiteFantasy The historical accuracy is not even the biggest issue here, the fights are extremely unbelievable and unrealistic. the trajectory of the arrows on those bows are incredibly inaccurate, to the point of utter ridiculousness. They are firing arrows at targets which are 30 maybe 40 meters away still they choose to lob them like they are making a 200 meter + shot. the guy holding the camera always manages to film the most uninteresting parts and keeps wobbling the camera like a geriatric 70 year old with spastic seizures and the acting is incredibly stupid, this one guy gets stabbed in the stomach and immediately drops dead from it.
      These people are getting paid ridiculous amounts of money for bringing you substandard entertainment. And yes if they had given me just 0.01% of what the guy who directs these fight scenes earned with this show I would have done a way better job at making it look both more historically accurate, realistic and interesting.
      Nice saying but it's called critical thinking and you oughta try it from time to time. Makes for a more nuanced worldview and overall better life experience, if you don't just swallow every last piece of bullshit you are served. But Oh no, God Forbid someone has his own opinion!

      @@REALdavidmiscarriage Ah, you're a physicist, not a historian, I see. Well, the common citizens like myself cannot care less about the trajectory of the arrows, sorry. Excuse me, but to so heavily criticise & mock the entire show only because of these things, is just absurd. If you don't enjoy the show because of the details, then I think you're missing the forest for the trees. But that's your choice. Critical thinking is my 2nd nature tbh, but I don't criticise something that's 90% good because it's not 100% perfect. If the show was simply bad, I would understand. But it's actually so f*cking good, and you make it sound like it's a total crap & disaster. That's why I told you, make a better one then ;)

    This is the trailer shown on Netflix. Is the entire series this… bad? It looked promising until I saw the trailer. They could easily flank them, like, without effort. They did not need to charge straight ahead like that. I thought it was like an exercise but then people actually died.
    It looks like sn awful series based on this only, like a budget Game of Thrones (season 8 included)

    • @us2Jack
      @us2Jack 3 года назад +7

      I mean if you watch the show and even by this scene alone it's pretty clear that the charging force is much bigger and expected to win easily but struggled against the far more experienced vikings, which is then backed up by quotes. I don't know how you can say it looks promising and then brand it awful based on one small skirmish, maybe watch a few episodes and decide yourself. Personally I think the first few seasons are among the best I've ever seen of any show but it quickly tails off for a few very obvious reasons which I won't spoil

    • @fredrikbermhed2529
      @fredrikbermhed2529 3 года назад

      @@us2Jack I thought it looked interessting but then Netflix decided to show this as a preview. If they had been a more circular formation or stood at a place where flanking would have been more difficult it could be justified. This just make the enemies look like idiots which does not make for a good show for me. I might take a look at it, based on what other's have complimented the show on, but this scene is straight up bad.

It's one of those shows that is fully carried by a few characters who are really really good, I will say that there are many battles in this show and many of them feature flanking manouvers and as realistic combat and as little plot armour as you can get from a tv show
